Time to introduce my other OC, I suppose...
Chyanne Drake was born in 1998 to two small business owners who had no idea about the war that was surrounding them, but received a quick education in the world of witchcraft and wizardry when their bright, intense daughter received her Hogwarts letter.
She’s smart, independent, and went through a dragon phase from ages six to twelve. She learned all the lore she could get her Muggle hands on, and then was delighted to find that the Ravenclaw common room had near a hundred volumes on more detailed, concrete dragon lore written by real live witches and wizards. The obsession faded into the background of her personality, but could be easily accessed during a particularly interesting Care of Magical Creatures lesson or when a new novel featuring a dragon character or plot makes it runs through the Hogwarts collective consciousness.
When she meets Teddy Lupin, in their collective first Divination class their fifth year, where they share a table and tea leaves, she learns that the only other person her year who had to start an elective two years late happens to have an uncle with a whole ranch dedicated to dragons, and immediately decides that she has to see it. She implores her favorite teacher - Professor Grubby-Plank - to get her an appointment for a tour, and asks Teddy to back up her request with his personal connection to the place.
Charlie Weasley and Hagrid - who, legend has it, used to have Professor Grubby-Plank’s job at Hogwarts - are delightful company, homey and serene, and she falls as much in love with them and their home on the ranch as she does with their assortment of dragons. Her particular favorites are the newer hatchlings, but she likes the older dragons, too. The wise ones, who are too far along in their lives to be aggressive anymore, who look like part of the earth they sunbathe on. She finds she could spend an entire day with one of them, if Charlie wouldn’t stop calling her in for dinner.
At the end of her blissful day on the ranch, he promises her an internship with the ranch as soon as she’s done with school, if she still wants it. Hagrid winks at her from across the table, and starts to tell her all about their routine on the ranch, with his rough accent and too-large gesticulations. Charlie just sips coffee and listens, and Chyanne can feel herself getting more and more excited for the life she can see herself in more clearly than she’s ever been able to see herself in anything before.
She goes back to Hogwarts with a purpose. Where before, she had felt completely out of place at a school that taught skills she didn’t know how to apply to her life, and nothing she’d grown up thinking was important, she now felt as if she was no longer simply “learning to control her own power” but working towards a career with the thing she’d loved the most in her life. Hogwarts, and life away from her parents, friends, and smartphone, had never seemed like her own choice. But now it could be something magical.
Chyanne’s parents got to see her graduate before she broke the news to them that she was going to be spending at least the next year on a secluded ranch with two much-older men, two other interns - one from Hogwarts and one from Durmstrang - and thirty four dragons. They’re understandably concerned, but somehow recognize that this is the only thing she’s wanted, and the only place that a girl born in Galway and educated as a witch could possible mold herself into belonging.
Working on the ranch is wonderful - she finds that after learning the job, there are days when she doesn’t speak to anyone except the dragons, and likes it that way. Charlie asks her if she wants to stay after her internship is over, and she answers that there’s nowhere else on Earth she’d rather be. Dragons, no expectations upon her, and space for a wifi router to boot? What else could a young witch ask for?
#harry potter headcanons#my oc chyanne#charlie weasley#teddy lupin#hagrid#dragon ranch#ranch verse#i think this is a very under explored issue muggleborn meta - not every muggleborn is going to want to go to hogwarts#it's going to be more or less required so that they can learn to control their magic right#but they don't necassarily have the history or the culture to want to stay#so i think the ones that don't have passion like chyanne does end up really really lost#because they effectively lost seven years of their normal lives - and have a big secret now to boot#but the world they entered not only doesn't want them but they might not have an understanding of it#deep enough to want to stay or to understand why it's important#rant of the night#muggleobrn culture#also she's al potter's first crush lol#and everyone teases him about it for ~~~years~~~
