Summary: For Levi, life hasn’t turned out the way he thought it would.

Perpetually single, living alone and trapped in an endlessly demanding job, he has resigned himself to a consistent, if dull existence. And yet, it is becoming harder to ignore the encroaching signs of middle age, from his grey hairs to the deepening circles impressed around his eyes. Scrutinising his tired face in the mirror, the realisation begins to sink in for Levi, that each day is taking him further from the young man he once was and leading him to become a person he no longer recognises.

All it takes is one song. One bar of melody. One lyrical phrase. That’s when time stops dragging its feet to listen. 

“Is this the place we used to love, is this the place I’ve been dreaming of?”

In that moment, as Levi closes his eyes, he feels the bland walls of his apartment fade away. In their place comes the sensation of cool air and damp grass beneath his feet. Without a glance he knows that the wooden bench stands where it always had, and that narrow river still winds beneath the bridge. He can see the clumps of trees and sculpted hedges all as they had once been…

…and Hange’s hand is cold from the breeze, their knuckles half hidden beneath their sleeve. Close enough for him to reach out and-

That’s when he understands, perhaps the past is not so distant.

That night Levi takes a walk along a familiar path, wondering whether it might yet lead him back to the road he should have taken all those years ago…
