basically jack was mean to davey in high school because he had a lot of unresolved shit going on and was fighting for his life inside his own head and didn't have a good relationship with himself and wasn't ready to do any of the introspection necessary to deal with everything he was feeling, and once he gets older and has a better relationship with himself and has unpacked a lot of those things, he makes the effort to reach out and be like hey, I'm sorry for how I acted back then and I hope we can move past it, but even if we can't I know I sucked back then and I'm sorry for lashing out at you when you did nothing wrong. and davey is like wow that was unexpected but appreciated and so they talk things out and move forward.

and spot was mean to everyone in high school for similar reasons because he and jack are parallels and foils, but also because he's kind of prickly and assholish in general, and race was one of the only people who was never intimidated by this and threw it right back which resulted in a very "you're both terrible for each other but it's better that you're inflicting this on each other than other people" type of relationship. was this healthy? no, but they got there eventually when they both grew up and the bitchyness started to be way more for fun than for any actual malice.

jack and spot are both guilty of the type of gay crushes like that one poster who wrote a note telling somebody to get out of their school but while jack grows out of it spot just ends up with race, who's just as bitchy back, and they both feel like it's their love language

#spot and race Must be wildly codependent in an unhinged way that eventually fades into domestic bliss for their relationship to appeal to me #i think they are both jealous assholes who enjoy arguing and bickering and until they settle into things #this makes their relationship very hot and cold all over the place for a good while #but once they get there and are secure in the knowledge that they've chosen each other and this is allowed to be permanent #they quickly turn into the kind of couple that's like sorry can't go out tonight monday night is date night #sorry i've blocked off my sunday afternoon to go for a walk in the park with the dogs and then watch a movie with my partner #grocery shopping together doing things for each other generally very settled and routine #while still poking fun and getting into arguments but also now very aware of where the boundaries lie and what crossing the line could do #also i think race is a generally nice person but because he tries hard to be not because it comes naturally #he's bright and cheerful but in a very sarcastic way so if you pay attention he's actually pretty pessimistic and often disguising an insul #as a haha silly fun joke #so he's Extremely capable of stooping to spot's level (haha height joke) and takes immense pleasure in being the one to break spot's compos #*composure #especially when they're younger and less willing to work together or compromise
