#so far I've seen half the Best Picture noms. looking forward to the rest (despite what I've heard about some (Emilia Pérez))

I strive to watch every Best Picture nominee for each year's Oscars, and I can confirm that The Brutalist is excellent. That's a huge relief, given its imposing runtime. It follows a Holocaust survivor newly arrived to the United States, where his past as a brutalist architect gets the attention and patronage of a wealthy businessman. A project spanning the 1950s finds the architect struggling to maintain his vision in the face of xenophobia, the whims of the rich, and happenstance. Many of us think the American Dream is dead. This story questions whether it ever existed, even in the often idealized 1950s.
Again, it takes a long time to reach the end, but don't worry. There's a 15-minute intermission (with countdown!). And it's about the destination, not the journey - although the journey is great, too.
