BJ is the only character spared from the usual MASH continuity errors because they just never gave him an extended family

I don’t spend much time thinking about BJ Hunnicutt, but I’m wondering: what’s the story with his extended family? I know we hear about a father-in-law, but a young man with a beautiful family - we should be getting references to his parents, aunts and uncles - all sorts of people stepping in to help Peg. Of course, maybe they are deceased or his parents didn’t have siblings. Maybe they live far away or there’s some kind of rift. But I could have gone for another “Dear” episode with other Hunnicutt relatives.

#mash #bj hunnicutt #funny hahas aside I think about this a lot #BJ simply does not talk about his family like. at all. which is very interesting to me #another piece of it is that he's a very unreliable narrator like the man loves to lie #for absolutely no reason #it's fucking hysterical #so like. the only family member he's ever mentioned that I believe in is his father-in-law #and thats because we see BJ talk to him on the phone #other than that he mentions his parents and says their names are Bea and Jay #when Hawkeye's hassling him about his name #so im inclined to believe that that was just a complete lie #and he's mentioned a grandmother #who he told Hawkeye was dead and swore on her grave. only to reveal that as a lie #so besides Peg Erin and Peg's father we know NOTHING about BJ's family #which is really interesting cause we know at least some basics about everyone else's families #my personal HC is that it's BJ's way of trying to avoid attachment #see his line about how he's only living for the day he can go home and he has nothing today to live for #so he talks about Peg and Erin cause that's who he's living for they're why he wakes up in the morning and keeps going #but it's not necessary to go into anybody else so he doesnt #in his head he's distancing himself by not being as familiar as everyone else is #which uh. I dont personally think he succeeds at #BJ was doomed to attachment when he took Hawkeye's hand and got up out of the mud #but I personally interpret the lack of info as his defence mechanism against getting too attached to the people in the war #the lying is just really fucking funny #reminds me of Columbo
