Do the Nightmares just produce and eat people’s fears/nightmares or have they actually killed through these nightmares?

They actually sort of "eat" people's fears / nightmares in the sense that they are gaining power and getting closer to corporeality. I've never mentioned this before, but I've dubbed the species name "Potentimares" [sort of combined the words "potential" and "nightmare" together].

As any other species, temperaments may vary -- but most of them are highly reactive and short-tempered, often lacking the dopamine / serotonin [not literally, let's call this "invisible" dopamine] necessary for impulse control.

They cannot kill you while they're in their nightmare forms.... but when they become corporeal, you'd better run. This heavily applies to Potentimare Ingo, who is vicious enough to abuse his shapeshifting powers to the fullest extent. He wants to see his victims suffer.

And by making his host, human Ingo, suffer, he in turn causes suffering in the people around him as well [mainly Emmet and Elesa] -- and that is exactly what he wants.
