Snake In The Grass

"Seriously! We all know that there was no way the official story adds up." You laughed whole heartily. You had been sitting at the restaurant for hours, loosing yourself in conversation with Bucky. The food had come and gone and true to Bucky's word, it had to have been the best Italian place you had been to since you left Italy.

"I'm telling you, that's exactly how that went down." He replied, leaning back in his chair.

"Everyone, the whole world knows, that the us government found an alien space craft." You leaned back looking at him, grinning like an idiot. "Whether or not you believe it, it was a whole cover up. One day in the local papers the next day nothing."

"Doll, it was a weather ballon." Bucky smiled as he stood. "You about ready? Mama's is going to close soon."

"What?" You looked down at your watch and that it was already midnight. "Holy crap! We've been here that long?"

"Time goes by faster when you are with good company." He smiled down to you. "I'm going pay, be right back."

You watched as Bucky walked over to the register, feeling guilty that you would have to finish the job you were being paid to do. You had looked into the people that wanted him dead, and there was no way you were going to double cross them. They had the money and resources to hunt you down if you backed out. Slowly you stood from your seat as Angelina came over to you.

"The food was amazing." You smiled as the woman hugged you again.

"You know, he's never brought a girl here." She smiled up at you, her eyes twinkling a bit. "He's had a rough time, just don't hurt him."

   "I won't Angelina." You lied with a smile, well it wasn't a full lie, you were just going to kill him after all. Bucky walked back up to you, gently he grasped your hand, almost unsure whether or not you would bulk at the idea and he led you out of the restaurant.

   "How about I give you a ride to your apartment, it's late and I would feel better then if I dropped you off at the coffee place." Bucky stated walking toward the motorcycle as he handed you the helmet.

   "I guess that's fine, but you're not allowed to come up, drop me off at the street." You replied, last thing you needed was for him to get a wild hair up his rear and drop by unannounced.

However Bucky was ever the gentlemen, he took you back to your apartment, and waited curbside while you let yourself into the building. Bucky had given you his number, saying if you were free the next day to drop him a line. Fishing out your phone you texted Fernando as you climbed the stairs to your apartment.

You: this is not going the way I intended it.

Fern: what? You expected the winter soldier to die over a little poison?

You: dude, I used enough to take out four sumo wrestlers!

Fern: got to think of something better chicka.

You: still have that cobra?

You woke up the next morning with a pretty clear plan in your head. You dressed casually as you headed over to Fernando's tiny apartment. You let yourself in without knocking, the place looked as spotless as it always did, everything perfectly placed, nothing out of disarray. Hard to believe this man ever got his own hands dirty but he did.

"Alright, y/n, what's this plan of yours?" He asked, stepping out from the bedroom, a snake draped over his shoulders. The reptile flicked its tongue out, head arching up, hood flared out. Its focus was solely on you, and it caused your heart to skip a single beat. The snake was massive for a cobra, and it was as beautiful as it was deadly.

    You ran the plan past Fernando again as you shoved him out the door after he set the snake down on the floor. Your eyes glued to the venomous creature as it slithered out of sight.

   "Promise he won't hurt flower?" Fernando asked at the door, you rolled your eyes taking a deep breath.

    "Hey, Bucky, it's me." You breathed into the phone just as the snake finally slithered under the couch.

"Hey Doll, hows your morning going?" He greeted you cheerfully.

"Uh, interesting." You replied, biting your bottom lip hoping this plan didn't backfire.

"How so?" He questioned, you could hear muffled words on the other end.

"Well, I promised to stop by and feed my friends snake while he was out of town and I might have forgotten to close the lid and Flower got out." You lied, taking a deep breath and slowly walking over to the kitchen counter and hopped up on to it, keeping an eye out for the deadly reptile.

    "Did you need some help catching it?" You could hear him chuckle on the other side of the phone, you rolled your eyes at the thought of being a damsel in distress but you had to try something other then poison this time.

    "It's not a huge deal or anything, if your busy that is but I wouldn't argue if you wanted to help." You stated, watching as the cobra slithered out from under the couch and under the tv stand.

    "Text me the address and I'll be on my way." He replied before he hung up, you did as instructed and waited. You kept an eye out for the cold blood creature, not wanting your plan to backfire.

    He did have a really nice laugh, you thought to yourself as you waited. You shook your head and reminded yourself he was a target nothing more, even if you could humor the idea of a romp in the proverbial hay with him, the longer your dragged this on the sooner he would find out that you had been sent to kill him. Plus you had no idea if your client was keeping tabs of you either.

   A crisp knock at the door interrupted your thoughts, must have been closer then you originally thought. You looked around before carefully sliding off of the counter top.

    "Coming." You called out, keeping your eyes trained to the floor, just incase Flower had decided to make a move from under the tv stand. Pulling the door open you were greeted by bright blue eyes, and a lopsided grin.

   "Hey doll." Bucky said as you stepped to the side and allowed him entry. "So what kind of snake is it?"

    "Uh," You responded just as Flower slid out from under the tv stand. "That kind."

   You watched as Bucky walked over toward the reptile, the Cobra reared up, it's hood slowly puffing up around it’s head. The snake flicked it’s tongue out at the man, you stood in your place, heart beating wildly, as you watched on.

    "Beautiful cobra." He remarked kneeling down, he was well within striking distance, your nerves were on end as he slowly reached out keeping his left hand level with it. The snake struck with lighting speed and Bucky instinctively pulled his hand back. The snake snapped forward again, sinking its teeth into the man's knee.

    "Bucky!" You called out as he reached down and grasped the animal by the back of the head, pulling it free from him. He stood and turned to look at you.

   "Where is the enclosure?" He asked calmly as the reptile curled around his arm.

    "Bucky, who cares about the enclosure it just bit you!" You stated, wide eyed, watching him carefully.

    "I'm immune to snake venom, same with poison, about the only perk from Hydra." He chuckled, you pointed back toward the back bedroom, Bucky walking in that direction. Of course, Hydra would think of making sure he was immune, why didn't you think of that. No wonder nothing was working, you took a deep breath as he remerged.

   "That's good, hate for Flower to have killed you." You told him with a smile as you both walked back to the door. You held it open as he stepped out, and followed behind him.

   "So what else you got going on today?"
