RoseBush (Sniper x E) Headcanons
I’m writing this out because...I need to get them out so I can focus on my final term paper. So there’s more under the cut!
How they realized they liked each other:
Sniper - During the first day they met, he really enjoyed their professionalism and was surprised by someone so small and young could be so informed about battle tactics. He kept an eye on her and her body language during the first few weeks she was there, even on the battle field. He started having dreams at night about them and was very confused, thinking it was just a case of “oh it’s the new female on the group.” But it quickly turned into “wait shit, oh god, I really like them”, with a lot of screaming inside. He tried being calm, cool and collected, not wanting to be unprofessional and only gave small hints of a crush on the tiny alien.
E - E’s kinda a huge dumbass when it comes to understanding people and if somebody actually likes her. She was unaware of Sniper keeping an eye on her, and usually just listened and kept her head in her sketchbook. She started getting flustered when Sniper started giving her compliments about her work on the field, and ruffled her beanie. It nearly killed her one day when he was talking to her about her artwork, and when she handed off her sketchbook to him, they touched hands. Needless to say, she went to Miss Pauling as a fluster blushing middle school girl that night.
Things they like about each other:
Sniper - “What Oi loike about the Shiela? Well, despite what many blokes think of ‘er, she’s actually quite a sweetheart. She stops what she’s doing to listen to someone’s problems, even if they aren’t sure if they wanna talk about it. I’ve seen ‘er completely put away all her painting stuff, and run down the hall way to the common room because she heard Scout was having some..issue. While ‘er volume can get out of control when she’s around her mates, she only wants to show she cares. And when she gets talking about something she’s really into, like her art, it’s amazing to see how passionate it the little Shiela is. Oi, and ‘er art! It’s bloody amazing to see someone create something like she does. She’s...something.”
E - “Oh god, honestly, it’s hard to explain what I really like about Sniper. I guess it’s because I see a lot of what I want to be. Calm, cool, collected...professional. He really understands and gets me when it comes to talking about my past, and unlike a lot of those around me, he doesn’t judge me for it. He doesn’t see me as an alien, he sees me as...an equal. Which is something I don’t get a lot, even around here. He listens. He cares. We may like a lot of different things, but..we get each other.”
What they like to do together:
They LOVE doing things together, despite being two semi-different people. They love camping, getting away and just having time between the two of them. Anything they can do where it can just be the two of them: cuddling in Sniper’s camper, laying on a couch/bed watching a black and white movie, or reading a book together. They also love sitting together with a hot drink and talk about so many things (their past, things they love, childhood memories). Sniper likes hanging out at E’s studio, just watching her work on a new painting and seeing her enjoy herself. While E enjoys sitting up at Sniper’s bird’s nest and watching him train with his snipin’. This doesn’t mean they don’t do things separately: Sniper really likes hunting and fishing, while E goes to a lot of gallery shows. They have enough trust and understanding so they don’t have to do everything together, but support and love the other when it comes to what they love. E doesn’t find a lot of enjoyment in hunting, and Sniper doesn’t fully understand the art world, but they will support each other either way!

Random headcanons: snipin’s a good job, mate. (extended 18/07/2018)
(don’t reblog)
- Mundy never trained in the military, being mostly self-taught when it comes to rifles. His keen eye and natural disposition for self-control would have made him an excellent candidate for the army, had he not opted for a life as an assassin. He did, however, work with a few former snipers who taught him a few pointers, which he then adapted to his own sniping style.
- One of the main ‘tricks’ he learnt from a former soldier is when to take the shot. Sniper had instinctively worked out that his aim is more accurate when his lungs are empty, but one piece of advice pushed him to take it further: shooting between heartbeats. Similarly to professionally trained snipers, he trained his own heartbeat to slow down, so that the blood flow in his fingers would not disturb his shooting.
- Sniper trains on a daily basis. Contrary to what his teammates may think, he’s not overdoing it: daily practice is an absolute necessity when it comes to sniping, as it is a perishable skill. If he didn’t practice for a while, he would lose his skills - and consequently his job. Sniping is not like riding a bicycle, it’s not a skill you learn and then never forget, and Mundy knows it.
- Contrary to popular belief, Sniper is somewhat an exception in his profession by working alone. Most snipers work in tandem with what they call a spotter, someone who helps them calibrate the shot. Sniper decided to go solo out of personal preference, but if Mann Co sends him out on a mission he knows will be particularly tricky, he’ll consider enrolling one of his teammates as his spotter, but such occurences will be rare.
- Like most snipers, Mundy may have to stay still for hours before taking his shot - and like a lot of his colleagues, he keeps his mind alert by playing mental games. The most popular one is Kim’s game: Sniper looks around and memorises all the items he sees, and tries to recall them later on while sitting in his sniping nest. Over the years, such games have trained him to develop a freakishly good memory for details, and a sense of observation that would make Sherlock Holmes jealous. And sometimes takes his teammates aback.
- Most snipers don’t go for a headshot, as the head represents a smaller target that’s easier to miss than aiming for vital organs such as the heart or lungs. Mundy goes for the headshot purely out of vanity, because he knows he’s that good of a sniper.
- Think Spy is an expert in camouflage? Please. If Sniper targets you outside the battlefield on Mann Co premices, you will never see him coming. When it comes to sniping, hiding is just as crucial as shooting.
ADDITIONS:
- Mundy’s rifle is a Remington 700, one of the original models from 1962 - before that he was a sworn Winchester man, but as far as sniping goes, he’ll argue that nothing beat the comfort and accuracy of a good tactical Remington.
- He only started using sniper rifles when he became a tracker of dangerous game, at times having to ditch his good old hunting rifles for something deadlier. He performed his training once he became an assassin, but he’ll often joke that he learnt the tough way. Since he never received any military or ‘proper’ training, he had to figure out most of it on his own, and a good number of injuries occurred along the way.
- One of his best but most painful learning experiences was to learn to shoot a sniper rifle without a stand. A sniper rifle is a particularly heavy weapon, and the recoil, particularly powerful - most shooters cannot shoot accurately without a stand because the recoil would completely throw off the shot. Sniper first worked with a stand, but decided he wanted to be a lot more mobile and dedicated hundreds of hours figuring out how to shoot his rifle from his shoulder without losing his targets. Any colleague he would mention it to laughed in his face - only to discover years later that holy shit, he did it. Mundy is probably one of the only snipers in the world to have found a way to fire a sniper rifle without leaning against anything, and it’s a secret he will proudly take to his grave.
- With that being said, he’s not a complete lunatic and knows all too well the risks he takes in doing it, even with years of experience behind him. Whenever he has the option to rest the rifle on something (floor, window, windowsill, pillar, tree etc), he takes it to stabilize and optimize his shot. He discards support either when he has no other choice, when he has no time to prepare, or when he’s very confident he’ll hit his target (which, admittedly, is very often). As such, Sniper has become excellent at using his environment to his advantage and takes this into consideration when choosing his nests.
- He has stopped counting how many times he hurt his shoulder, arm and collarbone (and even his face) in the process of teaching himself how to shoot a sniper rifle (it’s the price to pay for excellence, as he would argue). To this day, there is a constant bruising right under his collarbone, where the butt of the rifle would be placed during a fight. A physical proof of his job, as much as the black nail on his right thumb due to sometimes catching it in the bolt action while unloading-reloading too quickly.
- A sniper rifle is much heavier than your standard rifle. In order to hold it up, often without a stand, and be able to shoot accurately, Mundy had to develop a ridiculous core strength to be able to: hold up the gun, stabilize it, and absorb the recoil while keeping the weapon absolutely steady and land his shot with precision. He may not look the part as one of the slimmer men on the team, but the muscles in his arms and upper torso are made of steel. Him breaking down a door in a single try to rescue Spy while bleeding out comes less as a surprise with this fact in mind.
- Additionally, if you need someone with no shaky hands to perform a particularly delicate task, Sniper is your man. His hands are the steadiest in human memory. Or close enough.
