I started watching SUPERNATURAL in November 2020. I know, I know. My partner and I had been isolating alone since March. The timing felt right. I went though a wild amount of upheaval and trauma over the next year and SPN was there for me through it all. It was THE show at THE time and it kept me afloat when I needed it the most. Since November 2021 I've written just about 110,000 words of SPN fanfic, a number that seems unbelievable to me, and that too has been a real blessing to my creative life, no matter what haters say. (why didn't I write my own novels in that time? Because I have a hobby, Karen, and I love it.) And I've read about 500000x that much fanfic, which has been the biggest blessing of all. (ETA: oh right, if you want to read my fic, you can find my stuff here, I wrote a fic where Dean reads books. Lots of books.)

I know I'm a nobody in this fandom but I thought on this, our #DestielDay, I would submit my own humble rec list. I've curated this very deliberately: every fic here has just about 4000 hits or less (most under 3000) and all were published in 2020 or after. So, sort of a rec list for some lesser known and newer fics, something you maybe haven't stumbled on yet. Especially thank you to @jewishcharliebradbury, her rec lists gave me a place to start back in the day and I have tried to model the depth and quality they brought to their lists. I tried to link to everyone's tumblr, but if I missed one, let me know.

Most of all, thank you to everyone who has EVER created something for this fandom, from 2005 to 2023. I am so thankful and, honestly, honored to be among your number. You're not supposed to be cringe and say a show saved your life...but SUPERNATURAL saved me, it really did. Finale Fix-It & S15 and Beyond

This is hands-down one of the coolest “Dean Rescues Cas from the Empty” fics I have ever read and the concept is brilliantly structured to mirror the literal and metaphorical things Dean needs to give up and let go to get free. Every scenario is very satisfying and they make sense, is there any better feeling? Dean is very open in this, but in a believable way that still has edges. And, oh, the reunion is so good. Plus all the family stuff. Just excellent, exactly what you want in a fic like this: lovely, well-written, smart, fulfilling, all the pieces clicking, the show but better.

I love the use and passage of time in this one, it has some real impact, and I love the way Dean gets into the Empty (so smart, fits just right) and what I REALLY love in this one is the way it lets Dean be really clear-eyed and honest about his relationship with Sam, both the strengths and the weaknesses. And the last line, very clever and moving inverse of one of fandom’s favorite things.

THEEEEE post finale Sam Winchester-Outsider-POV this fandom needs. Sam is absolutely awesome in this, the most believable, loving, realistic mix of “I knew all along” and “I had no idea” versions of Sam, landing somewhere I think that’s really true and in character. It fills in and develops so many gaps and silences in what the show let Sam know in the absolute best way. Best Brother Sam is a weakness of mine and he really shines here, there for Dean in the best ways but also coming into his own, I love it so very much. (this author also has a very great 2022 Big Bang fic, hugely recommend that one too.)

Who doesn’t love a HANDPRINT FIC?!? And boy this is such a good one. It follows Dean and his thoughts on the handprint from the first touch all the way to fixing the finale and it simply buzzes with longing and desire, tenderness and rawness. It’s great insight in lot of ways into Dean’s journey. It’s short but fulfilling and oh that very perfect last line. (this author also has a lot of great Jupernatural content.)  

Somewhere Off in the Dark by magickastiel 

Another awesome fic that traces Dean’s shifting/growing feelings for Cas from when he shows up in his hotel rooms to a HEA fix it after canon. Dean, again, is handled so deftly in this one, his confusion and sorrow at all the times Cas is slipping away from him all the way through the things he won’t let himself know. He feels really true in this one, sharp and tender in the best Dean ways. Also it has an agonizingly romantic end, you love to end up there.

This author has so many freaking good SPN fics, omg it was almost impossible to pick just one to include on this list. Go treat yourself with their entire list because there’s so much good stuff there! But this one, oh I am a sucker for a finale fix-it that lets Dean be this tender. While I LOVE fics where he just jumps right into Cas’s arms (and write them lol) I also feel like this is so true to Dean too: that “maybe I misunderstood, maybe I shouldn’t say anything, maybe he doesn’t still –” And on top of all that, it’s a “they go the beach” fic and it gets the details of it so right, sand in your toes and all. Tender, amazing slow-burn, real, hot, full of heart and longing and everything unspoken and just waiting. Very satisfying!

A set of four short fics that create an entire world of feeling and emotion. These feel like little whispered stories told under the covers, very atmospheric. There’s one very sexy one, a haircutting one (so good) and they’re just intimate. All together a great set and did I mention they’re in the “Cas saves himself” genre which is mmmm an underrated treasure.

A fix-it fic that has a particularly unique and beautiful visual of both how and why Cas comes back. The mechanics behind it are fairly standard but the way this author creates the visual of it, the sheer emotion and force behind it and how it happens, it really stood out to me and stuck with me. It’s Dean being brave enough to really feel and the way that just blossoms – lovely, aching, full-tilt wonderful.

One thing I absolutely cannot get enough of is fic where Cas is hiding out from Dean in heaven. It just hits. And the only thing better is Dean chasing him down and the WAY he does it in this fic, methodically and – well the method (sobs) it is so endearing and OBVIOUS and gives Dean a chance to shout in all the best ways. This one is just real sweet and kind of goofy and if they have to be in heaven, I want them to still be these same two dorks.

This is a post S15x18 from Cas’s POV and I think it’s very true to where he would be in the moment of getting yanked out of the Empty: resigned, hesitant about what he has in front of him, still a little in shock. And then. And then. Sweet and simple and Dean gets a chance to say, say, say it. This author has a good post series AU and a lovely little spate of S15 codas, all good. And then wrote this in real-time in the week after 15x18 Despair and right before 15x19 Inherit the Earth aired (could you just sob over the possibilities?!) and then hasn’t wrote anything since and that’s a shame but, like, yeah I get it.

This goes AU after 14x20 Moriah but it is a truly delightful twist on how Chuck could’ve reacted there and it makes Dean sharp as a knife, which is one really resonant image woven through this fic. Great imagery here and so many clever solutions for the lazy plotting of S15, including simply one of my all-time favorites in any fic ever solutions to Cas’s deal (genius) and getting rid of Chuck. Brilliant like a puzzle box yet still full of so much fucking joy.

The fact that this was written in October 2023 and is so agonizingly good fills my heart with joy and tells me Destiel will never die lol. Cas, in particular, is great in this – he’s having a hard time adjusting to being in a body and with all the fuzz of the world. I love fics where Cas struggles with coming back from the Empty and this uses a really unique approach to it: Cas facing sensory overload and not knowing how to feel but wanting it all. Lovely, hot, Dean is just right in this too.

Many might say I am biased because Renu has beta’ed everything I have written in the SPN fandom and they can read my brain and make everything I write better. But it’s not just that. Renu has done something beautiful and delicate in this fic, which is about Dean and Cas getting trapped in a net together (forced proximity trope, yes please) and weaves a web of its own; pulling you in just as they are pulled together. This is set mostly in early S14 (before fixing the finale in the most heart-healing way) and captures that feeling so well. There’s so much that’s unsaid between them yet still conveyed and Renu absolutely nails that, along with the tender longing that was always there. This is a fic to relish.

You know how the show just sometimes is like “uh so anyway uh then Cas…uh…left.” and it just doesn’t make one lick of sense? FINALLY FINALLY a fic where Dean says “I’ll go with you,” and then goes because he actually would do that. This is a post Tombstone fic so it is exactly where/when he WOULD go and it is tender and hesitant and aching in just all the ways it would be between the two of them at this time. It’s about needing to keep someone in sight, it’s about having another chance to say something so important, it’s slow and soft and just right for the characters in this place. I could read this one about 100 times.

This fic is basically the way you feel when you get all cozy and snug underneath your favorite blanket. This is a domestic-life-in-the Bunker S9 fic where everyone behaves like they are in character and not just like they have to get Cas off screen because the writers panicked. You’ll just want to curl up in this fic and savor it the way you wrap your fingers around a hot beverage on a very cold day, there’s no better way to describe it.

I think I’ve read this about 100 times and it still gets me everytime? It’s a five things fic about Dean and Cas hooking up and it’s all you’ve ever wished for. This is set in an amorphous S8 and it is not just agonizingly hot but also romantic and very funny. It feels really in character! Sam is hilarious, Dean is clueless but bowled over and letting himself be swept up, Cas is delighting in every second and smarter than he lets on and it ALL feels fated and lovely and sexy and just splendid. (this author only has 3 SPN fics but they are all so good and if you try sometimes, well you just might find is an absolutely brilliant deconstruction of Dean learning the differences between “needing” and “wanting.”)

Romance at the Motel 6 by shelia_amour 

This fic makes me feel like Stefon from SNL. This fic has everything: Cas and Sam pretending to be married, just the right amount of jealous Dean, Dean randomly pretending to be married to Cas, Dean realizing maybe this isn’t so fake after all, motel vibes, Cas in Dean’s clothes, Cas getting bee slippers. If you are not sold on this already, we are very different people. So good, aches just right. (set in a kind of “whenever” of canon, but I like to put it somewhere in S8.)

The epitome of how fanfic unfolds for us all the things that COULD happen. You can’t PROVE to me Dean and Cas never snuck off to snuggle and feed Dean’s touch-starvation early in S13. I had to check when I finished because I just couldn’t believe this fic was under 4000 words because it feels so full of touch, longing, the things unspoken, and all the ways Dean was reaching, reaching, reaching. The best kind of ache, and everything by this author is lovely.

This is some S10 Demon!Dean that made my stomach hurt and my heart ache and I absolutely loved it and I absolutely hated it and it all felt so REAL with who Demon!Dean was and could have been. There’s a TW for mildly dubious consent in this, but to me, Cas was so agonizingly true to who he was/where he was at this point in canon too. This fic is gloriously, claustrophobically intimate. I say unbearable because as a reader you know that this closeness, this intimacy, is what Dean wants/craves/deserves but can only give himself as a demon and the author does an exquisite job at getting all that across. Hurts so good!

Dean and Cas bake bread and in the soft space of creating something with their own hands, get so close to the words Cas said. It’s about healing and anger and making something just because you are so tired of everything breaking. If that alone isn’t enough to convince you, let me also throw in this is another one of those “possible off-screen moments in canon” that gives them something honest and tender and raw and it feels so very possible.

I knew, it called, I knew, everytime Steven Moffat writes under RTD I will a) get scared b) cry c) love the episode. And in this case, all three happened! Bingo!

The concept, the really 1-place centered episode, the emotion, it was beautiful, and most of all, as always, I need to give some credit for my man Ncuti Gatwa KILLING it in all ways possible. This drama deity has graced us with his presence and I am about to become religious!

Love to see the Anglicans back, but I have to talk about my favourite bit of the episode: the Doctor's monologue. Fucking brilliant. Amazing, smart, very fitting to the concept, made me tear up, actually just shove me in a sock and fling me around, it was just so good.

Anytime the Doctor talks about war it's a good day because he will serve that speech till the end of his days.

Now, there's this theory I've written about by @ jeopardyfriendly on TikTok, which essentially argues that Ruby is the Doctor's daughter.

If you're someone who's interested in collecting physical media, especially DVDs and blu-rays, I cannot overstate how good an investment a blu-ray drive for your computer is.

There are copious free resources that will allow you to digitize your collection for additional preservation and convenience... and I've placed them beneath this break!

MakeMKV: https://www.makemkv.com/

MakeMKV is the program I use for backing up blu-rays and DVD. It’s “free while in beta”, and as far as I can tell it’s going to continue to be in beta forever. You just need to register the program with the beta code, which can be found here: https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1053. If your registration ever expires, you can just go to that post and they’ll have it updated with a new one.

“MKV” is “Matroska Video”, which is a container format (named after the Russian nesting doll) that collects the video track, audio track(s), and subtitle track(s) all into one file, which is super convenient for anime, because that means you don’t need to worry about making separate files for different combinations of dubs and subs. My understanding is that this is, essentially, a lossless video copy, and I’ve done comparisons comparing screenshots taken from video playing off the disc and from the .mkv, and I haven’t been able to notice a difference. As for playing .mkv files…

VLC is my media player of choice for watching back the stuff I back up. I’m not 100% sure if you need to download the CCCP for this- my backups play fine on my tablet just using the VLC app, and I recently found out they even work off a USB stick plugged into a Samsung Smart TV- but it doesn’t hurt to have.

MakeMKV can also be directly integrated with VLC Media Player to play blu-rays right from the drive, which is tremendously valuable if you're not interest in/don't have the hard drive space for digitization. I think I’ve encountered maybe one thing that couldn’t be played off the disc with this solution, and that was fixed in a subsequent update to MakeMKV. Different companies author discs differently, and I like to keep my stuff organized the same way, which is where this tool comes in. I won’t go into too much detail on this here, but if you ever need to split one large file into smaller files (for example, a disc has 9 episodes of a show to a single title/file, and you want to split them into individual episodes), edit or remove chapter information, or rename audio/subtitle tracks, this is the tool to do it. There's a lot to this, so I would suggest reading the official documentation, but I could also whip up a guide if people are interested.

The video encoder for shrinking those backups down to size- my favorite example was getting all 49 episodes of G Gundam down from almost 300gb off-the-discs to just under 50gb. This is also going to be heavily dependent on how powerful your computer is, because encoding takes up a lot of resources. On my computer, which is by no means top-of-the-line, I’d say on average it takes about 50 minutes to encode a 24 minute episode of anime, and that increases exponentially the longer the source material is.

There's a lot of information there, too, but it also provides generic settings to plug in to HandBrake if you don't care to manually adjust the settings for each project you're doing.

And that’s everything I use for my process! A lot of this was trial and error with other programs that cost money, performed worse, and were generally aggravating to use. It's a bit of elbow grease, but the reward is that once something is digitized, you have it forever, exactly the way you want it.

Burke’s fingers itched.

He busied them with a captured pawn from his side of the chess board, twirling it back and forth as he tried to contemplate his next move. But he could barely hear himself think for the detonator sat only feet away, practically humming with the energy it was poised to release. He had waited several hours before leaving Megaton to ensure his chosen mark got to work, and several more since arriving himself at Tenpenny Tower. It was hopeful to think someone fresh out of a vault would make such good time on the journey, and yet it wasn’t rocket science was it? You could see the tower from the edge of that pit on a clear day.

He glanced north over the edge of the balcony, at the grey mass on the horizon. The rotting hulk that broke up an otherwise blank slate. To think he had spent so long waiting amongst that pile of rust and its wretched inhabitants. Time he would never get back! And to what end? To what end indeed! Oh, it only pained him to know that they wouldn’t know their fate. To show the self proclaimed Sheriff how this had happened right under his nose... But little joy that would be, that fool was too easy. The bar keeper, now there was an interesting fellow. Burke could have worked with someone as unscrupulous as that. Unfortunately he was wed to the pit. Just like everyone else in that place, he had no vision. Caps was all he could see. He had his methods of making them but what use was that if you were required to live forever in a place like Megaton? Worse, he perpetuated such an offensive attempt at society by contributing business, services, and reasons to visit or stay, however sordid they may be. Yes, it would have been satisfying to let Moriarty know his petty empire was ended by the customer who suddenly left town, who could have offered him so much more if he had been smarter.

“I say, Mr. Burke! Make a move already. I haven’t got all millennium.” Tenpenny rapped on the table with his walking stick, jarring Burke back to the present moment.

“Hm? Oh, of course.” Without flourish he shifted a piece across the board.

“Ha! You’ve really stepped in it now, my boy. Not smart, not smart at all.”

A speck of irritation flared through Burke’s jaw. He was sure he could beat the old man any day of the week, but today there were bigger things on his mind. “Oh, I’ve lost interest, sir. What say we detonate the bomb now?”

Tenpenny frowned. “No, no, nonsense! You’re just a sore loser, Burke. Always were. You keep playing now, and don’t go easy on me. I may be getting old but I’m not stupid. Stay focussed!”

Burke checked his watch. “I’ve given her ample time to get here. To be honest, I think her hired help will have taken her money and left her in a ditch. We’ll be waiting forever. In any case, I don’t want the Sheriff or those religious nutjobs tampering with the device while we sit around wondering. We won’t get another shot like this.”

Tenpenny groaned. “Ugh, you really are quite a bore sometimes, you know? Alright, since you can’t concentrate on our game anyway. Er, fetch me my sunglasses would you. It’s going to be quite the show, isn’t it!”

Burke hopped from his seat and did as asked, anticipation coiled in every one of his muscles. “The show of a lifetime, sir.”

“Quite! And you’re sure it isn’t going to damage this tower, at all?

“Certain,” Burke called back as he approached the metal case containing the detonator. “The experts calculated with the size of that bomb, the blast won’t reach halfway to here. She’ll remaining standing, as she did through the war!”

“Quite so! Alright-- oh, what do you want?”

Burke turned, followed Tenpenny’s gaze to the door, where stood a security guard- Chief Gustavo’s runner, to be precise.

“Sir,” the young man nodded to Tenpenny. “Mr. Burke, sir, there’s a girl at the gate. Says she has business with you.”

Burke rolled his fingers in the air to hurry the boy along. “Name, man, does she have a name?”

“Talia, sir.”

What timing! “Good! Send her up, I’m expecting her.”

“Yes sir. Er- there’s also a man, looks like a merc. Doesn’t look like our sort, sir, but she’s very insistent he comes in too.”

“Oh, of course… Yes, yes, let him in. Keep an eye on him, but he’s nothing we can’t handle.” He sent the runner away and paced the balcony.

“What’s this, Burke?” Tenpenny yelled, turning his head to hear better.

“Oh, nothing to worry about, sir. Now-- oh, I suppose I should collect them and then we can prep the system. Yes.” He pulled himself away from the case containing the key to Megaton’s end, the link to his device which he could assume was now within the casing of the unexploded bomb that rested in the very centre of town. He kept his eyes on it until it disappeared from view as he slipped indoors.

The moment was nigh! He waited in front of the elevators, watching the floor indicator climb to penthouse level, rubbing his hands in excitement. The doors parted, revealing inside the girl from the vault with whom he had spoken in Megaton. The outsider who had crossed his path at just the right time for both of them. Someone with no ties to the town, someone with perspective; From their conversation, he’d surmised that her vault was in its dying days, at least as a society in the form Vault-Tec had imagined. But it had been built by pre-war civilisation, filled its rooms with people from those streets, and that knowledge, those ideals had survived to migrate back out into the surface world. Who more fitting to fulfil this task for Tenpenny and he, than someone who could understand their vision for the future of civilisation?

Beside the girl stood quite a contrasting figure. Wasteland through and through, a rough and capable brute named Jericho whom Burke had seen around Megaton, but who mostly seemed to be mothballing himself in the dank saloon for some unspoken reason. Burke had fully expected him to pose more of a danger to Talia than anything en route to the tower, but apparently here he stood corrected. If it had sped up her arrival then it didn’t matter to him.

“Talia, you made it,” he said without a hint of the surprise he felt, extending a hand. “And so soon.”

Her hand was clammy. “Well, you know, nothing like the great outdoors to make you want to get back indoors real quick, nowadays.”

He smiled at her joke and brusquely addressed Jericho. “I believe we may have met in town.”

“Yeah, think so. Wanted to see if you was for real.” The man only nodded in greeting, which was fine by Burke given he did not seem to have been acquainted with a bar of soap recently, or perhaps ever.

“But of course. A pleasant journey, I trust?” Burke asked generally.

“Oh, just swell,” Talia answered gruffly. “And your people-- real friendly welcome, huh? But, er... I’m sure you aren’t really interested in small talk, are you?”

Burke hummed in appreciation. “The more I talk to you, the more I like you. So tell me- is it done?”

She nodded.

Burke almost leapt into the air such was the release of tension at the news. “Excellent! Then let’s get to business. Come! This way.” He beckoned the pair to follow him out to the balcony.

Talia elaborated as she scurried to keep up. “I did exactly what you said, so if nothing happens it’s down to the parts- and that could be either bit. Trust me, it’s hard to get new things to work with old things, and the age difference in this case is even bigger. And this is custom work, never done before, so. Just so you know. If nothing happens that it could be down to loads of reasons. Because it was simple to install like you said, and I’ve worked on trickier things before. You know, if you ignore the, uh, atomic bomb.”

Burke paused at the door. “You sound very defensive. The pulse charge is rigged, no?”

“Yes, it’s rigged,” his charge assured. “I did all the switches like you said, and it’s connected.”

“Good. That’s all I need to know.” He opened the door and ushered them through. “You had me worried for a second there, Talia.”

“No, no need to worry,” she reiterated quite cheerily.

“He don’t really mean that he is worried, princess,” Jericho muttered over her shoulder, quite wickedly.

“I know, can you just go back to worrying about your money, please?” she hissed back.

Burke closed the door behind him and joined them outside. “People, please, relax. Enjoy yourselves. You are about to witness something incredible: The atom bomb. Power. Raw energy. Perhaps we’ll even understand what it is that turns those Children of Atom into believers. But most importantly, that mass you see jutting up from an otherwise unblemished horizon, ragged and coarse just like the people who founded it and dared to call it civilisation- bah! The gall! Well, for the good of the future of mankind, you are about to see it obliterated.”

He passed around his guests to the detonator case, opened it with care, and began setting the switches to prime it for action.

“I’ll believe it when I see it,” drawled Jericho behind him.

Burke smirked to himself. If this knuckle dragger wanted to doubt him, all the more fun when he was proven wrong. These people could never stretch their imagination to bigger things. “Do either of you play chess?”

“The fuck is chess?”

“That’s the one with the horses, right?”

Burke sighed while flipping a few more switches. “Chess is a game as old as civilisation itself. And yet in two generations this ‘town’ had lost all knowledge of it.”

“You’re nukin’ this town over some fuckin’ game?” Jericho interjected.

Burke pinched the bridge of his nose. He thought he’d earned a break from the rabble for a while. “A myriad of reasons, Mr…?”

“Jericho.”

“Well. Jericho, you can count yourself the luckiest person in Megaton today.”

“Right. I still say I’ll believe it when I see it.”

“Oh, you’ll see it. Almost ready.”

Burke finished the prep and gestured for the girl to come closer. “Talia, since we are here because of your work, perhaps you should kick this off.” He urged her another step closer with a hand on her shoulder and rather redundantly pointed out the big red button. “When you have finished savouring the moment, just push the button- and then mind your eyes.”

Talia tried to back away. “Oh, no, this is your thing. You should be the one to hit the switch. I mean look at it, it’s practically got your name written all over it. Don’t let me take that moment.”

Burke wafted the idea away. “Nonsense. You rigged the thing, you should have the honours. It’s really very simple.” He steered her back toward the console with firmer hands than before. “It’s perfectly safe for us at our location. Look, there’s no way to mess it up. What are you afraid of?”

She looked round at him, almost a perfect poker face, eyes flitting between Jericho, the ground, the horizon, something in the back of her mind. “Spiders,” she said, turning her face to one side and slamming her hand upon the button.

Burke froze, staring at her white knuckles atop the switch. She gave him no warning! He jerked his gaze up to the north, eager not to miss a moment. His heart leapt to his mouth as silent seconds went by- nothing!

But then- everything. An intense light enveloped the world, emanating from a single point on the horizon and expanding out, only happening in an instant. Instinctively he scrunched his eyes shut and shielded his face with an arm, but it was of little use. Bony shadows danced in the light that still seared his vision behind closed eyelids.

The flash faded just as quickly, though his vision took much longer to settle down. He braced himself for the next stages. There would be a shockwave, a heatwave, noise and wind. He faced it all, soaking up every sensation. It was stranger, more intense than he could have imagined. The immensity of it, even all these miles away and it sounded like the fabric of reality was under strain from the forces involved.

All through this the fireball churned and roiled its way upward, rising on a tower of smoke that billowed out the higher it grew, until finally amid the ensuing silence the infamous mushroom cloud seemed to hang over them even from where they stood .

“My God… What beauty… What purifying light...” It had been brighter than bright. The whole process left no uncertainty. Megaton was annihilated. Such awesome, absolute firepower, it was almost as if unleashing a sentient force. “That, my friend, is beautiful,” he pondered to his right.

When he received no response he turned. Talia was heaving herself up from the ground, bewilderment striking her somewhat doe-eyed. Jericho was looking equally dumbfounded just behind her.

“Holy shit,” she breathed when she’d got her balance.

“Ho-ly shit. He really did it!” exclaimed Jericho.

“Bravo Mr. Burke! What a grand display of fireworks!” Tenpenny cheered from his seat behind them all.

Burke took a deep breath and another lingering look at the result of his efforts of the past months. A beautiful way to wipe the slate clean if there ever was one. Behind him, the avatars of the old and new world stood bonded by the dust and dirt that covered them both, by the shock that had them looking back and forth for some assurance.

“So?” he asked them. He didn’t need to add anything more.

“I, uh, I didn’t really think he was gonna do it,” Jericho reflected.

Talia shot him a concerned look. “Don’t tell me you’re gonna be mad about losing Megaton now? I told you what was up.”

“My friends,” Burke interrupted. “We have not ��lost’ anything. The Capital Wasteland is a better place now. This is one part of a new future. This very tower is a symbol of the progress we aim to make here. We will rebuild the world the way it was meant to be, not filled with knuckle-draggers like Megaton. You’ve both been a part of that today. You should be proud.”

“Well said, Mr Burke!” Tenpenny called. “I almost wish we had a few more nukes to detonate. You don’t see that very often. It really was quite a show, well done.”

“Thank you, sir. I had help, of course. Speaking of which, I should conclude business with our guests here.”

“Ah, quite right! And, send out some more scotch while you’re at it, would you.”

“Of course. If you’ll come this way...” Burke ushered Talia and Jericho back indoors to arrange her remaining payment.

Tenpenny’s voiced followed as far as the door. “Oh, damn! The bloody shockwave blew the chessboard over. I was winning that game!”

Burke closed the door behind Jericho as he left the empty suite, pockets jingling with Talia’s caps. “I’ve never seen someone spend their pay quite so quickly, you know.”

Talia shrugged. “He gets me here, he gets the caps. That was the deal. May as well get it over with.”

“Not the most astute deal,” Burke commented. He noticed she was breathing easier now the unofficial mercenary was somewhere else.

“He’ll probably spend it all here anyway. Then get bored and move on, with any luck.”

“Yes, but you could have spent it all here.”

The girl rolled her eyes a little and began to saunter around the vacant penthouse apartment. “Jeez, you sound just like my old teacher. Look, I had a problem and I solved it. I’m not interested in looking back at problems that don’t exist anymore. My new problem is that I’m broke. I’m hoping you’ve got a few more jobs since we last spoke about work, ‘cause I’m available. Maybe some maintenance around this place? Trust me, a place this big and old needs constant work. The vault did.”

Burke considered her optimism for a moment, then smiled and opened his arms. “Well, then, I suppose it all worked out perfectly.”

Perfect indeed. It wasn’t ideal that Jericho had his money, but she was likely correct that it would all make its way back into the tower coffers. Then if he didn’t move on of his own accord there were ways to remove him from their midst. No matter right now. She had done the job, was already asking for more, and she’d proven herself to be resourceful and forward thinking. Burke could certainly use someone like that. All the better then that Tenpenny wanted to do something with this vacant suite.

“Oh my god!” Talia screamed from somewhere unseen, before poking her head out of the bathroom door. “You have hot running water here?!”

Burke nodded and allowed her to freshen up, waiting by the door until she re-emerged. When she did, her face was freshly washed clean of the blood, dirt and grime collected during her journey to him. “That’s your hot running water, if you’ll accept the deed to this suite. As reward for a job very well done.”

She gawped at him. “Deed? You’re kidding? I… I can live here?”

Burke made a face to say that was correct. “Mr. Tenpenny requested himself that I offer it to you. No one else has done him such a service. So, what do you say?”

She gawped at him a few moments longer, and he thought he saw a slight glistening of moisture in her eyes before she broke the silence. “Is a deathclaw as terrifying as it sounds? Yes, of course I’d like to live here… Wow, fuck… Thank you.”

Burke took her hand and shook on the deal, patting her warmly on the shoulder. “It’s my pleasure. Welcome to civilisation.”
