2017 iMac Not Loading Repair - Turning on with forbidden circle sign - https://it-solve.au/repair-cases/2017-imac-not-loading-repair-turning-on-with-forbidden-circle-sign/
iMac Not Loading Repair
2017 iMac Not Loading Repair – Turning on with forbidden circle sign
Interesting case of an 2017 iMac not Loading Repair where the iMac turns on with a forbidden circle sign. These 2017 iMacs are flagship models of Apple and although couple years old their 5K screen and powerful specs brightens up.
21.5 iMac hard drive health indicators shows failing hard drive
Looking at the health indicators of the hard drive, it is clear that the drive is failing. When drive fails, operating system install on it will be unstable
2017 iMac Not Loading Repair Process
21.5 iMac failed hard drive
There is one solution for such failure, and it is a Slow iMac Repair in Adelaide.
Drive with 10k working hours, should not fail so drastically. But looking at the indicators they also show that the system was overheating heavily. This must have caused drive mechanism to fail and cause operating system failing.
2017 iMac loaded with a service system shows internal drive structure damaged.
We want to load a service system and check if we can access customer’s data. Apart than repairing the system we also need to recover the data as customer did not have a recent backup.
iMac file system verify or repair failed
This tells us that the drive is so badly damaged that we cannot even get the data by standard means.
After discussing with the customer they were happy with us to do a data recovery on the drive. As well as repair the iMac.
Although new iMac is already out, and this is 5 year old models, the 2010-2019 iMacs are one of the most resilient models. They do come with an active cooling. Unlike new iMac’s which are essentially a thin screen with Macbook Air motherboard glued at the back. With no upgradable or modular parts.
iMac Not Loading Repair – Taking it Apart
Removing glued in screen on 2017 iMac
Removing the screen on these iMacs is a delicate process. We have seen lots of customers cracking the screen while trying to separate the glue. It is a similar to a iPad or Phone screen which is glued in to the case, with a difference that the screen has about a 4kg of weight to it.
Sliced opened 2017 iMac for an SSD upgrade
Once we sliced through the glue, we can remove the screen and peek inside of the iMac. Immediately we can spot the amount of dust collected within.
21.5 2017 iMac taken apart for SSD upgrade
This is a common issue, due to the thin design of these iMacs. Thinner they get, essentially faster they clog up. Apple introduced fannless design to tackle the issue with the new iMacs, however components still generate enormous amount of heat, and inevitably when a newer operating system comes along it will cause serious overheating problems, which we start seeing with A2337 model Macbook Airs.
Removing a failed drive of 2017 iMac
Following step is to remove the failed drive and replace it with an SSD. Which not only will provide a faster response times, but also will ensure customer data is safe once it is recovered and transferred onto.
Replacing internal drive with an SSD
We trust this brand due to its longevity and reliability. Although we had to choose half of the customer storage size due to the limited budget, most of the of the shelf iMac’s come with 500GB SSD and will be sufficient for customers usage.
Installed SSD on 2017 iMac
With installed SSD and freshly installed Monterey now we can move into recovering the data from the failed Hard Drive
Recovering data from Failed iMac Hard Drive
Recovering iMac Data…
Luckily although with a corrupted file structure, we still be able to access most of the data. Customer was happy for a partial data recovery and we managed to extract the data onto an external drive, which then can be used as a Time Machine backup.
12 hours iMac Data Recovery Sprint
After 12 hours of data recovery we managed to extract over 90% of customer’s data from the failing drive. Poor thing managed to hold itself for so long.
Successful iMac not loading Repair
Successfully Repaired 2017 iMac with not loading fault after a failed hard drive
Within 24 hours we had this gorgeous iMac repaired and ready to be returned to its owner. We collected it and returned it back to the customer in record time with data recovered and fresh Monterey system installed

⚙️ This laptop was saved from obsolescence! [10 mins of read]
Tumblr media
Hello!! i am making this post here to raise awareness for PC and laptop upgrades, and how it should motivate you to do that same thing to preserve yours for longer or to give it the power you need! this will feature my history with mine, as well as the steps i took to be able to make him breathe life better! this is the story of his journey, and how it went to this current day.
his name is samuel, he is an asus fx570u and i bought him back in september of 2018 after i turned 13! he was brand new during that time and priced at 800 euros, offering only 6 gb of memory and an HDD as his specs. however he does have an 8th gen core i5 as his cpu and a geforce 1050 ti for his gpu. for something marketed as a gaming pc, it's pretty low and it wouldn't allow him to run fast enough, especially for highly demanding software and causing some compatibility issues. it wasn't severe, but as i was stuck with an hdd, that meant operating systems would run pretty slow on it, also leading to long software loading times. this is made worse by the fact that its bundled system, windows 10, isn't designed to work efficiently on hdd in the first place, but at least that means i have my hands on a windows key to be able to use some windows exclusive programs..
i mainly used him to be able to use advanced video editing software and customize the games i have on it for my own taste, because back then i loved making youtube videos and it was a passion i've had for years until i've partially retired from it. i rarely bought games on it and instead opted for free-to-plays, and overall had a good time with him.
unfortunately within only 3 months, his HDD broke down and i sent him to technicians for them to replace it with another one. it was a minor accident i've had but it formatted all my data, even though it didn't matter much since i uploaded most of it to the internet. i just had to be gentle with him by trying to not moving him around too much to stop that issue from persisting... but it was still low-end in terms of system performance. i finally used him for 1 year straight before moving on to a tower pc, feeling tired about his slowness and believing i couldn't do much about it.
i used that other (unnamed) pc for almost a year, starting from 2020! they seemed to work better since it had windows 7, but embarrassingly enough that version itself stopped receiving official security updates months before i started using it, even though i was careful while accessing the internet with it. its performances were also low, but didn't really matter much since i didn't take so much advantage from the power of samuel. suddenly, i had the foolish idea of installing windows 8.1 on the latter to try to deal with the performance issues on 10, but it led to even more compatibility issues since the drivers i used were meant to be for 10 only. only by early 2021, i got win10 back on him and started using him again to get more power again.
so the low-end performance persisted for very long. back then i never knew how to upgrade pcs, so i was only used to replacing devices with others which wasn't cost-efficient. after realizing i used windows for well over 10 years, i had the idea of switching to a mac and as a result, for xmas 2021 i got myself a cute yellow silicon imac, who goes by the name of sarah! but switching to macos posed new serious challenges, such as getting used to the lack of windows compatibility and the missing features that i was used to for a long time. most of the creativity i did with her was drawings with firealpaca and krita, and cgi with blender, which wasn't really much. still, she is pretty glossy and also powerful for many of the tasks i'm performing with her. originally i also intended to sell samuel, but that never happened (i low regret that decision so much i swear).
in late 2022, samuel's performance apparently had had a big hit... he now takes approximately 20 seconds to open any program and it seemed to me like something was wrong with him. at that time i also gained interest in linux since it's a libre OS capable of much more flexibility, essentially allowing it to revive old PCs. i finally decided to get linux mint to work on him via a dual boot with win11 (what was i thinking when i "upgraded" him from 10?). the performance seemed a little better from then, but programs still took very long to open. for that reason, he had often been collecting dust as he finally became unusable.
finally we've reached 2023. this is the year i decided to take on tearing down devices to learn how to examine problems inside of them. after checking samuel's performance again, i noticed that his HDD was having extremely low writing and reading speeds compared to my tower, which made me feel disappointed. but that's when i finally decided i could be able to replace his hard disk with an ssd, a new generation which is more durable, faster, quieter and energy-efficient...
but i still had a good wait until it was possible. suddenly with my money, i found an ssd which only costed €30, and it made me happy that this would be a quick way of healing up samuel! so i rushed to get it, and finally opened him to prepare everything... unfortunately, his keyboard has to be lifted up in the process, and there are flex cables connected between it and the motherboard. but taking out the hard disk thankfully only requires a few steps; removing some screws, then inserting the SSD inside of it. after that i quickly put linux mint back into him. SO SPLENDID...
for only the price of a high budget indie game, now he can open programs very fast, close to how fast sarah can do, and just about any task works perfectly well on him with way less bugs! thanks to that fast upgrade he's become viable for daily drives again, even though i don't have other desks suitable for pcs which makes me less motivated to use him. really wish id be able to since the architecture he has (x64) means he has a lot more software he's able to handle natively...
but then, i hadn't upgraded his ram. i said before that he only had 6 gb of it, and that meant he could only work with a few programs before becoming bloated. and as i like doing power tasks on him, that obviously causes problems. so one day, i went to a pc part store out of curiosity, and became shocked when i found small ram carts that could be compatible with my laptop. after some talk with the seller, i bought 2 ddr4 carts each containing 8 gb and clocked at 2666 mhz, more than double of what i used to have. after that it was time to take on a challenge to be able to insert them myself.
when the seller asked me if i needed assistance to have the carts inserted into my laptop, i giggled internally because of my past stories with learning how to open devices and trying to troubleshoot or modify them internally. i obviously declined it which saved me money, but also meant i had to do it all myself. after an hour of painful manipulations which required me to take out the entire motherboard from samuel, while that next step was also difficult i was finally able to insert the carts into it, before placing all his components back into place. and after such a long time of waiting...
i've finally done it!
Tumblr media
Samuel is feeling very well right now!! despite his cpu and gpu dating from over 5 years, now he can do even more tasks at a time, while also being able to read them faster, a massive improvement compared to when it was stuck with an hdd and only 6 gb of ram. i'm guessing those low specs were for the purpose of saving manufacturing costs, but until you'd find use for the components that you'd remove, they'd end up becoming waste. and with a free os like linux mint, it adds up to an even more optimized experience than windows 10, which comes with so many unwanted stuff and can't be customized very well.
have you had a similar story to mine? did that pose you challenges? i took over 40 minutes to write this entire piece of text, but it should at least be very well detailed! on the best case scenario i hope it would inspire others to do some research on upgrading PCs to preserve their lives and especially save costs. Thank you for reading the entirety of it, don't hesitate reblogging it if you think it would interest your own audience! peace for all of you 💙

[Addie's relaxed form was lit by the gentle glow of their old iMac's CRT screen, the sky outside slowly darkening and casting long shadows in their little ramshackle home as they slumbered. Their sleep was usually cold and dreamless, but this time they were awash with an unusual warmth; it was a pleasantly weighty, all-encompassing feeling that engulfed them like a cozy blanket - a metaphysical manifestation of the love they had found; for their friends, for their boyfriend… For the newfound sense of purpose their life now had.]
-Addie
[Sonny glanced towards the screen, looking out into the real world. That bitter tension in his chest slowly melted down into a more comfortable feeling. Right... that.. that hadn't been important anymore. He had been in a rather unfortunate place back then, but...]
[Not anymore. Not anymore...]
[He watched their slow breathing, the rising and falling of his partner's chest past the veil. Those soft features of their face illuminated by the light of their screen... each freckle and scale...]
[It made him feel better rather quickly, just... watching.]
[...It's probably best he doesn't mention this to them.]
[He'd... probably sound really creepy, admitting that he was watching them sleep...]

Placements I’d like to call thrifty:
Tumblr media
Venus and Jupiter both seem to represent spending habits. In both unique to their own kind of ways. Jupiter for wealth and Venus for the physical commodity of what that wealth can bring. Saturn however represents the economy as a whole. The one that represents the entirety of what’s driven by Venus and Jupiter. Taking into consideration that Saturn can be restrictive and the respective signs of Capricorn and Aquarius can both represent a more cold wintry energy (henceforth where winter is hard to bear due to the impoverished harvest around that time), it can be safe to assume that Venus and Jupiter in those signs can prove to be thrifty. Being one to work on a budget rather than being a wealthy and born-into-success type deal.
Here’s some of my takes regarding those observations. And remember, these are in my opinion and solely mine. You’re free to disagree but let’s not cause war in the comments. It’s needless banter.
Placements deemed thrifty (MAJOR):
Venus in Aquarius (pretty self explanatory. The thrifty commodity finder. Someone to finds unique stuff at a goodwill or eBay for a good price and makes it either a fashion icon or a trend. The alternatively trendy.)
Venus in Capricorn (also self explanatory. Someone who saves a bunch of money before getting what they want. You’d see them decked out in some luxury stuff but they’d also be quite cheap and insisting on buying a great value box of sparkling water than Bubly or Topo Chico.)
Venus in Sagittarius (may be too wild in buying commodities. Watch for thoughtless/needless spending)
Saturn in Taurus (slow to build wealth but it may also be karma with wealth)
Saturn in Sagittarius (toning it down on the spending naturally or having karma with travel. Travel usually costing a lot of money can be an issue. Last minute spending due to so much karma in benevolence.)
Jupiter in Aquarius (wealth in alternative work routes. You take the interesting way to success and it’s guaranteed. May have had to manage money after you have spent on it. Paychecks may range variously.)
Jupiter in Virgo (I have this. Not everything is just handed to you on a plate. You have to have your x’s crossed and i’s dotted, your plans planned and your seats booked in order for there to be forward motion and a chance to get money. Wealth comes from years of knowledge. And knowledge is king these days.)
Jupiter in Capricorn (like above, you have to work for it. But for y’all power is gained. Alas, if you end up being frugal this is definitely a placement for it.)
Saturn in Cancer (you raise a household from a young age. You may have been sent out on grocery lists and handed a budget at ten. You had to follow it or be punished. If you managed to find cheaper deals and prices, you’d have extra money to spend on yourself. Alas, you only had so much so you had to enjoy one little consumer item all to yourself. Doesn’t matter what that was. Or if you were smart, you saved it for the piggy bank. Either way, another thrifter/frugality placement.)
Saturn in Leo (the debilitated celebrity. Publicity karma. Being a celeb meant money right? With Saturn you may have had to become quite scarce in order to find some sort of karmic release. Your ego had to take a blow so you can find publicity. Without that you’d be probably more frugal than a Canerican Saturn. Prayers to you my love.)
House placements that might signify thriftiness and frugality (MINOR AND VARY):
Saturn in 2nd, 4th, 8th, 9th,
Venus in 9th, 11th
Jupiter in 12th
Tumblr media
Before I continue, I may want to also kinda “add a cherry on top” by saying:
To be a thrifter is to be a future trendsetter’s inspiration. Apple took after the 90’s iMac G3’s for their color for their new mac’s. Same goes for our fashion.
Go out. Thrift for a bit. You never know what might be an inspiration to those in the future.
You can deadass be a trendsetter and not even know it.
Keep on rocking thrifting community! <3

The difference in using Zorin OS (Linux) vs. MacOS vs. Windows as a daily driver is identical to the feeling of waking up every morning and taking a shower in distilled, lab-sanitized water vs. murky vaguely yellow and egg smelling water vs. pig shit. Using Linux on a daily driver has me feeling so squeaky clean and secure. Anytime I have to go back to my iMac, I’m just like “ugh, why is everything so tiny and slow.” And any time I have to use a Windows VM, I’m forced to question how Microsoft ever managed to convince people that they make useable software.

what do you use to make your gifs?
i own a desktop imac but it’s notoriously slow, so i do most of the work on my ipad. neither of those are strong enough to handle photoshop, sadly, so i tend to rely on photopea for now, and there are certain weaknesses with that, but i’ve worked with photoshop a lot (i studied graphic design for a bit) and i think photopea gets the job done for the most part.
mostly i download the clips, but if i can find a source that has decent quality, often i’ll also screenrecord since i’m on my ipad since it’s a very quick process.
if you don’t have a lot of RAM, which my ipad doesn’t, sites like like ezgif can be useful for *some* things. i wouldn’t use their sharpening, or coloring or anything because it’s not great and you don’t have a lot of control, but sometimes i use it only to convert the clips into a gif in the first place, which means that you have the frames in the right order, in the right size, leaving less work for my ipad and photopea which makes it less likely to crash.
this is straight out of ezgif (except the speed which has been changed to 90% to match the finished product.) vs sharpened and colored (w. roughly 10 layers if i remember correctly) in photopea/photoshop.
Tumblr media
for any “designs” or “overlays” you can assume that i’ve used procreate. a lot of them absolutely can be done in photoshop/photopea but since photopea has a huge tendency to crash, i usually want to spend as little time as possible in there. for example, i used procreate for this set, and for this set!

Ch.128 - Dipshits.
Previous Chapter - Masterlist 1; Masterlist 2 - Next Chapter
Tumblr media
Kiera discusses her next strategy with Rob; Simon catches Baler falling in with the wrong crowd by playing Cowboy Poker.
“It’s about time you showed up for lunch!” Robert chuckled while he joined her in her office, sitting down at the small table that was close to the window, looking out towards the vague frame of the Tetons in the far distance, only knowing the mountain range due to its shape alone. “I got you a chicken wrap from the café. Hope you weren’t craving anything else.”
“That’s fine, Rob. Thank you.” Kiera shook her head, kindly accepting the fresh chicken Caesar wrap he had brought her as a kind gesture.
As well as a reward for helping him make a fuck ton of money within the last few months.
“So, are you excited to finally be taking full control of this office?”
“Terrified, but it’s how I learn.” She shrugged.
“Well, what’s your first move?”
“For one, I’m going to take down Jenkins. Any fucking way I can,” She scoffed, eagerly curling her index finger under the tab of her can of Dr. Pepper. “You get these land developers like him who find pristine recreational property, build whatever they desire and sell the dream – no major problems arise unless you have cocksuckers like Jenkins who desire to take it further: building hotels and casinos. They all end up leaving because they can’t generate enough cash flow after trying to turn it into New York City.”
“That’s right. You can’t make a big business out of raw land with real estate.” Rob nodded.
“Exactly.”
“What’re you going to do?”
“We set up a fund – a fund that buys land and puts it into a conservation easement which cuts the property tax by 2/3’s by the end of the year. Then we go to the Department of Agriculture and enroll the land in a CRP.”
“What’s a CRP?”
“It’s the federal government paying us not to farm it.”
Rob scoffed, “Now why would the federal government willingly pay its citizens not to do something that brings in revenue? That just doesn’t make sense to me.”
“To control the supply. They won’t have to worry about local farmers – or people like Jenkins – diluting the market. It’s shit, but it’s a benefit for us.”
“What’s the turnaround look like?”
Kiera shrugged, “A government pay per acre, per year depending on land. The last I checked in Wyoming, it’s between $200-$300 an acre. That also goes for Montana, Utah, and Colorado – except Colorado is more stingy with where its money goes.”
“So the government will pay the land off for us in seven years?”
“We’ll pretty much become landlords who are paid not to rent.”
“Hm. Sounds like a pyramid scheme.”
“With the government at the bottom for once, then yeah. Let’s start with a $100,000,000 investment in land, then we funnel the CRP funds into more land purchases and buy probably up to 30,000 acres per year without spending a dime. We make a profit by year two with a net revenue of $45,000,000 per year.”
“The more we buy, the more the number increases?”
“Sound like a good retirement plan for you?”
“Of course it does, but why hasn’t anyone does this before?”
“They can’t afford it, but we can.”
“What’s in it for you, Kiera?”
“What makes you say that?”
“Something is buried within you.”
“I’m just doing my job,” She assured him. “And I’m doing the best I can to protect my father’s ranch and legacy for as long as I can.”
“I understand,” Rob nodded. “We’ll put the land into the hedge fund and use the brokers to buy up the land. Don’t haggle on price, Kiera. You know what to do.”
“Otherwise, you wouldn’t have given me the reins.”
*
Kiera’s fingers ached with as much as she had been typing on her computer, silently thankful that she had forced herself to upgrade from the slow HP desktop to an iMac, which hit the spot on her aesthetic, finding herself to be slightly more organized than she thought. Impressive, she mused.
Breaking her gaze from her computer, her head throbbed once she broke her focus to look for the source of the vibrations from her phone. Shit, already 5:00? “Hey.”
“What’re you up to, love?” Simon asked softly on the other end of the phone.
“Getting ready to have a meeting with a realtor who’s selling land around the ranch. Going to make an offer on it.”
“Rolling in the bread, yeah?”
She scoffed, “If only it was our money…”
“I’m sure I’d see signs,” He chuckled. “Coming home after?”
“Most definitely. My eyes have been so strained and my head has been hurting since I came in this morning. I ran into our buddy this morning.”
“Who?”
“Jenkins. I stopped at the diner for breakfast because I was craving strawberry banana pancakes and knew Ruby was there. That fucker was there, too. Me and him had a little word.”
“I bet that went well.”
“About like you could imagine. Couldn’t keep my big mouth shut.”
“That doesn’t surprise me,” He poked. “So… Cravings, huh?”
She swore she had heard him smile at the thought.
“It’s been a few weeks now… I need to check and see if we have another one on the way,” She giggled. “Guess I have a stop to make on my way home, huh?”
“I’d love to see that. Your daughter has been babbling dada all day and I’ve been on a Cloud 9. If only I can get Jacob to finally talk without saying gibberish.”
“That’s because they’re babies, Simon,” She scoffed playfully. “The realtor’s coming in. This shouldn’t take long. Want me to call you back?”
“You can call me back or I can mute myself, love. I’m just sitting on the couch watching Evie and Jacob sleep.”
“Where’s Baler?”
“Bunkhouse. He and Johnny have been bullying each other about playing poker and Teeter kept instigating it, so that’s what he’s been doing since he’s been home from school.”
“Christ, that boy,” Kiera shook her head, glancing up at the realtor who had walked in, setting his briefcase down next to him in the chair while he sat in front of Kiera’s desk.
“Did I come in at a wrong time?” He asked, his tone nearly irritated at not only the fact that he had to deal with a woman, but being a man of strict order when it came to appointments. When you say to be here at 5:00, I expect you to be ready, not talking on the phone. Fucking women.
Oh, but he had no idea what he was up against…
And she noticed this, making it a point to piss him off even more for her own benefit. “Just mute yourself, Simon.” She advised, also sending him a quick text to inform him that he wanted to hear the rest of the conversation.
“What’ve you got for me, David?” She asked, watching him huff before stacking a file on her desk with the plot of land that he was able to provide for her that was for sale.
“Hope this best suits your needs.” He commented.
She arched her brow as she looked over the file as well as the photos that he had taken for the marketing on his iPad. “How many acres?”
“418. Asking price is $6,000.000. Has a water source, two houses, a separate garage, horse barn, indoor arena that’s air-conditioned and heated. The whole nine yards.”
“How motivated are the sellers?”
David scoffed, “Well, they thought spending the winter here was better than being in South Carolina. You tell me.”
You cocky motherfucker, she scoffed to herself. I’m going to ruin your ego in a few minutes. “Offer $4,000,000. No escrow – cash. One week close.”
“Wouldn’t you want to see it first?”
“Seeing it now.”
“Okay… You didn’t strike me as the type that would just buy something without seeing it.”
“You’d be surprised, buddy,” She retorted. “No negotiations. Offer the four and a week close. Surely they’d be eager to move back east for a mild winter.”
“Care to see one more that might better suit your interest?”
“Why not.”
David nodded, removing another file from his briefcase before setting it on her desk, taking the iPad and opening the other folder for his next proposal. “800 acres that ties into the national forest on the west, view of the Grand Tetons from the back patio, nothing but hunting land. It’s not available, but I know the people—”
“Then why are you showing it to me?”
“You… Wanted to see every large plot in the northwest part of Wyoming?”
“For sale.”
A brief moment of silence fell between the two, making dominant eye contact as if they were challenging each other. “It’s called Wren Acres.”
“Why’s it named after a wren?” She questioned curiously, truly wondering why a plot of land would be called something opposite to what species resided there.
“Who the fuck knows,” David scoffed. “Maybe it’s because they’re from South Carolina?”
“What’s with the wit, David?” Kiera asked softly, her adrenaline pumping as she was eager to make another man mad that she would be questioning his dominance. “Quick math for your commission making you feel eager? Damn, you’re showing us properties that aren’t even for sale. Man, you’re on a roll. Might go home and lay some pipe to the ole’ lady.”
He scoffed in astonishment as well as surprise. It’s kinda hot when a woman thinks she can be more assertive than me… “Wha-?”
“Get out of my office.”
“Kiera, I don’t—”
“Get the fuck out of my office. When you make a proposal, fax it to me so I don’t have to look at you again.”
“Maybe I won’t.”
“You won’t or I will,” She shrugged. “You can lose your commission and I’ll go and lay pipe to your ole lady. Your choice.”
He scoffed, gathering his files and iPad before stuffing them back into his briefcase. “I’d like to see that.”
“I bet you would. Go write up the offer so I don’t have to. When you get your commission I want you to shove it so far up your waxed ass,” She scoffed, glaring at him while she watched him storm out of her office before mumbling, “Fuck, I hate real estate agents.” To Simon once she directed her conversation back at him, hearing him chuckling at her conversation while patiently waiting for it to end, although a part of him hoped it wouldn’t end, he quite thoroughly enjoyed watching Kiera be assertive to people, including him. It’s so bloody sexy when she tells me like it is, he mused to himself. “You remind me every day why I’m glad to be on your good side, love.”
“Did I forget to mute you?”
“Sure did, but I don’t mind. At least I was assured that you didn’t have another man in your office for another type of meeting…” He poked.
“That’s tomorrow,” She scoffed back, her tone nearly assertive, even though sarcasm was a thick underlier. “I’m finishing up and heading home. What do you want for dinner?”
“Remember, it’s Friday. Your mum was going to cook dinner and we go over there.”
“That’s right. I forgot to call her earlier—”
“Don’t stress about it. She called me and I took the kids over there around noon. She asked me to help her hang a few frames around the house that the poor lass couldn’t reach.”
“Awe, look at you being a house-husband.”
“Gotta do something while I’m on time off from work. Feels nice to do nothing with something on occasion.”
“I’m sure, babe. I’m heading to the truck now. I’ll see you in a bit.”
“Be safe. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
*
“Got a whole hand of ‘em, boys!” Frankie taunted the others, his free hand full of cards while the other clutched a bottle of beer.
“Easy to say when you’re not in it.” Dirk teased from across the table.
“What’s eatin’ you, Baler? I know that’s not your poker face!” Lawson snickered, nudging the teen with his elbow.
“Yeah, you look like you’re about to take a shite!” Johnny laughed, tossing into the blind that sat piled in the middle of the table.
“Maybe I am…” Baler sighed, the corner of his mouth raising into a smirk before tossing the winning draw onto the table, watching the rest of the playing wranglers sigh in defeat.
“You son of a bitch!” Frankie sighed, folding his hand before twining his fingers behind his head while Lawson tossed his ballcap to the floor.
“Is this all we’re gonna do?” Teeter groaned impatiently.
“It’s what we always do?...” Frankie answered, his brows furrowed.
“Is it just one set of nuts y’all share?” She taunted, making Dirk laugh.
“Aside from the ones I’m wearing, I think your lady has the only ones in this room.”
“You’re probably right, mate.” Johnny huffed, his face flushed.
“When I was your age, we were out in the arena playing real poker… Cowboy Poker.”
“Now that sounds fun!” Teeter chimed.
“Wh-What is that?” Johnny asked.
“Oh, it’s real fun, baby. Involves a lot of whiskey and gettin’ a lil dirty!” She mused, leaning down from behind him to kiss his cheek.
“What exactly is it?” Baler asked, his expression just as confused as Johnny’s.
“We’re not playing it, so it doesn’t matter.” Frankie answered abruptly, shaking his head and beginning to shuffle a deck of cards.
“Bock… Bock, bock…” Dirk trailed off, chewing on the end of his cigar.
“That old fart is taunting me!” Baler scoffed. “Let’s do it.”
“Boy, your balls haven’t even dropped yet and you’re wanting to risk not ever growing them!” Lawson sighed.
“And your dad will kill us.” Johnny reminded, arching his brow. “Especially me for letting you do it.”
“Afraid you all will lose? It’s a damn shame mine haven’t even dropped and I have more balls than all of you combined.” Baler shrugged.
“Goddammit,” Frankie sighed. “Let’s go.”
All members of the table stood to their feet, anxious and ready for whatever this so-called game was. Knowing that it was taking place in an arena, it was about to get messier than what Teeter had explained.
*
“Don’t worry, baby! Ye be alright! I’m gonna stay behind the fence here!” Teeter snickered, clasping her hands over Johnny’s shoulders as she stood behind him once he sat down in the plastic chair, setting an open bottle of whiskey in his lap before her lips rested on his temple. “Drink up. Ye gonna need some liquid courage!”
Johnny nodded, never hesitating before taking a large sip of the liquor before passing it to Frankie, watching him repeat the motion before he passed it to Lawson, watching him take a small swig before passing it to Baler, shocked to see him take a drink just like Simon would as well as never making a sour face after he swallowed.
“Goddamn, kid, you stealin’ whiskey when your dad ain’t home?” Dirk commented, surprised.
“Nah, I just had a rough life before this place, old man,” He retorted. “More liquid courage, Frankie? You look like a puss right now.”
“Fuck you. You sound just like my sister.” He retorted, referring to Kiera as she was his sibling.
“Taught me well, didn’t she?”
“Now, what’s the rules?”
“Last one at the table keeps the pot,” Lawson answered, his form visibly trembling from adrenaline and fear. “Pass me some more of that.”
“Drink up, dipshits,” Dirk laughed. “You’re going to need it.”
“You two are getting horse traded by this old bastard and he isn’t even drinking anything.” Baler taunted.
“This is fucking nuts!” Lawson shouted, desperate to pump himself up to hide his fear.
“Quit crying!” Baler scoffed. “We’re ready!”
“Yeah, there’s not a lot smart about this…” Frankie sighed.
“Here we go, ladies,” Baler continued, taking a final long swig of the burning whiskey before shouting, “Ready!”
Johnny took a deep breath when he heard the gate open, a set of thunderous hooves colliding with the sand while Teeter shouted at the bovine, the radio that was perched on the ground to provide as background music blared Mud by Whiskey Myers as the bull charged into the arena, looking around frantically before setting its sights on the table in the middle of the arena, each player sitting as still as they possibly could as the bull charged closer, bowing its head for its desired impact, Baler sitting on the other end of the table and physically watched the bull charge as if it were charging at just him.
With a sharp thud and the air kicked from his lungs, Baler steadily stood on his feet to flee to the nearest fence, watching as he was the last one in the arena, unaware that the other players had fled with adrenaline after being rammed by the bull, Johnny and Teeter both encouraging Baler to run with adrenaline still coursing through their veins, Dirk’s aching limbs helping the teenager over the top of the fence rail with a laugh while he did his best to dust him off. “That’s some cowboy shit, boy!” He shouted with excitement.
“That’s… That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever done!” He laughed. “But that was fucking awesome!”
“Ye okay baby, no missin’ teeth?! Your pecker still on right? I ain’t need no limp’n!” Teeter questioned Johnny, looking him over while he gasped for air and clutched his ribs.
“I’m fine, bonnie. Bastard hit me right in the ribs.” He groaned.
“Balls of steel!” Frankie laughed, patting Baler on the shoulder as he limped towards the barn, regrouping with the rest of the wranglers as they all gasped for air.
“Are you alright?”
“Fuckin’ peachy.” Baler groaned, wiping the blood from his nose.
“You might need this.” Lawson said, reaching the bottle of leftover whiskey to the teen as he took it eagerly, finishing it off without a second thought, even if Simon had just walked towards the arena to investigate the commotion, the wranglers unaware that the blaring music had caught his attention as it was very rare of the wranglers to throw a “party.”
“He lost his hat, so he owes us a six pack and a new radio.” Frankie teased, the players still unaware of Simon’s deathly gaze as he was storming towards them.
“The fuck I do!” Baler scoffed. “Give me my money!”
“Fine!” He scoffed, slapping the fifty-dollar bill into the teen’s palm, watching with a scowl as he had eagerly fisted it into his back pocket.
“What the fuck are you bastards doing?” Simon shouted.
The wranglers were wide-eyed, looking like a bunch of deer in oncoming headlights, nearly scared out of their wits and suddenly wishing they were caught slacking on the job instead of what they had just done, the worst of it willingly letting a teenager drink whiskey like an old man.
“Uhm… It’s Friday.” Baler answered for them, hoping that the day of the week would at least help him and the wranglers out of this situation.
“I know what bloody day it is, lad!” He shouted. “Why were you in the arena with that bull and why are you bloody?!”
“We were tryin’ to milk him!” Teeter snickered, knowing that Simon wouldn’t be as inclined to scold her in front of Johnny.
Boy, what she wrong.
“Not the fucking time,” He glared, more irritated that his son was battered and bloody – something that always drove under his skin as he always felt he needed to be the one to protect him, even in his wrong decisions. But Simon wouldn’t admit that he was impressed with the kid. You just took a beating by a two-thousand pound bull and still got up. You have some serious guts, kid. “Lad, go to the house and tell your mum what you just did.”
“N-No, I—”
“I’m not going to tell you again.”
Then, the teen did something that truly caught Simon off guard. He scoffed at him.
Simon arched his brow – a warning. “Get the furball out, then go to the house and tell your mum what you just did.”
Baler scoffed again.
“If you *scoffing sound* one more time, I’ll choke you for real.”
The rest of the wranglers laughed as Baler limped away in defeat.
“Balls of steel when it comes to a bull, but going home like a kitten when he’s in trouble.” Lawson teased.
“I’d be more afraid of going home if I were him,” Dirk shrugged. “That bull is the least of my worries if it comes down to dealing with Kiera as mad as a wet hen.”
“Yeah, you’re right. I forgot she beat the shit out of Frankie a couple of years ago.” Lawson snickered, nudging Frankie with his elbow before Simon quickly took control of the situation and grasped their coats, knocking them off balance before shoving them back towards the bunkhouse.
“You all get out of here and get yourselves cleaned up. Four a.m. comes early!”
“We never get up at four on Saturday—” Dirk pleaded.
“You all will tomorrow,” He glared. “Maybe you all will learn once you decide to not mess with a bloody rabid bull.”
“Yes, sir.” Dirk nodded, respecting Simon’s leadership as well as understanding his reason for being upset, joining the rest of the wranglers to the bunkhouse, Teeter helping the old man walk as Johnny stayed behind in an attempt to stay on Simon’s good side.
Like a dog who had just been punished.
“You, especially.” He scoffed, arching his brow at Johnny.
“I’m sorry, Simon. It was all just fun—”
“Yeah? How’d that work out for you?”
“Pretty fuckin’ rough,” He breathed a laugh, stuffing his freezing hands into his jacket pockets. “What’re you wanting us to do in the morning?”
“In case you forgot, you said you were coming hunting with me and the boy tomorrow.”
“I’d rather work,” Johnny sighed. “Hunting with you is like a recon mission. After being with Teeter for so long, I don’t know how to keep my mouth shut for longer than an hour.”
“You’ve never been able to keep your mouth shut,” Simon retorted. “Who won?”
“Your kid. Little bastard never moved.” Johnny huffed, relieved once he saw a prideful smile spread across Simon’s face at his answer.
“Is that right?”
“The kid is a walking stick of dynamite. He’s a perfect mix of you and Kiera and he isn’t even blood-related to you. Makes me wonder how your actual kids will turn out.” He poked.
“I can assure you, if my daughter grows up with Kiera’s attitude and my stubbornness and I catch her out here playing this stupid game like you all were playing tonight, every one of you would be dead and she’d be locked up in the house until she was an adult.”
“Don’t lie, you wouldn’t even let her out of the house when she was an adult!”
“You’re probably right.”

hi friends 💖
just checking in! i know i've been a little inactive lately, besides my queue and me occasionally reblogging old sets that have hit milestones, i haven't really been here. don't worry, i'm not leaving or taking a hiatus... there will be a TL;DR at the end bc i know not everyone cares about these posts, which is totally okay!
there is a reason for my inactiveness, i've been a little distracted lately but mostly distracted this week. i had planned to make more gifsets, but my laptop keeps disconnecting from the internet randomly (a fairly new issue) and the internal fan keeps turning on (an ongoing issue); it's on rn and the only thing i have open is chrome to make this post, which is making my laptop overheat; making it run a lot slower.
since this has been happening, i asked my parents if i could possibly replace my laptop with a desktop computer. i am an apple kid (there is no right between macs or pcs; it's all personal opinion!), so i do want to get an imac. i've actually wanted an imac for a while now, but i didn't get one when my parents offered to buy me my laptop back in 2016, when i was let go from my previous job, that treated me terribly. the stipulation for my parents actually buying my laptop was it HAD to be a laptop. their thinking was that i would need a laptop if i got another graphic design job... which i never did. if i had gotten a desktop back then, i would've had to pay for it, which i didn't have the money for. so i took the generosity of my parents and i got my current laptop, which i do love and will forever be grateful for. but my laptop is approaching 8 years old, which is pretty old for a macbook pro. it is still up to date with the latest software, but it just runs so slow due to age. another reason i want an imac, i can't keep sitting in my bed on a laptop, i need to sit at a desk. my chronic back pain has been getting worse and i know it's partly due to how i sit in my bed all the time on my laptop.
but a lot of things need to happen before i can even get the new computer, i need to get a new desk that will accommodate the new computer, i need a new chair; the one i currently have has zero back support which i need, and i really want a nice customized mechanical keyboard. so i've been busy this week looking at keyboards, desks, and computer chairs. my parents agreed to pay for half of the imac as a hanukkah gift! so i have time to get everything together. and of course not all of these are things that i need to have to get the new computer, but they are things i want.
i've wanted a nice mechanical keyboard for a while and i do love my current mechanical keyboard, RK84. i use it for work and everyone loves the RGB effects on it! but i want one that i have completely customized. the board, switches, and keycaps. ironically, the keyboard i've been looking at is the same keyboard that felix customized and showed off recently, the GMMK Pro, which for some reason is really hated OR really loved in the mechanical keyboard community... but i really just want the board part. i want a heavy metal keyboard, but i don't know what switches i want yet or what keycaps i want. it's funny though bc the current switches i'm used to are glorious switches, they're the purple kailh pros. i love them, but i don't know if they're what want i want for my at-home typing and gifmaking. i'm using them right now to type this post. they are really good for quick typing but still have a little bump to let you know that you've hit the key hard enough. so they're great for work where i type emails daily.
the keycaps i'm also interested in, akko black translucent w/ green print, may need to have a special switch so that the RGB on the keyboard shines through better. i brought my RK84 home to actually change the keycaps so i can test out the ASA profile of the keys for a while before i actually decide on the keycaps. but the only type available is linear switches, which in the past, were too sensitive for me. i would always knock into incorrect keys when typing and make a lot of mistakes. but i'm really used to typing on a mechanical keyboard now (so used to it that i hate flat mac keyboards now lol), so the linear switches may not be an issue now.
anyway, i know that was a lot and again, it's okay if you didn't read any of it and just scrolled down here to see the cliff notes version:
TL;DR: i know i've been a little inactive lately, but i've been distracted with trying to update my desk setup. and my laptop keeps disconnecting from the internet making it harder for me to actually upload gifsets. but i'm going to try to at least make gifs this weekend. i may or may not be able to actually have them drafted.
i hope you're all doing well. if no one's told you recently, i'm proud of you and you're doing great! 💖 please stay safe out there and stay hydrated my friends! 💖

How to Save Time and Money on Mac Repairs in Oakleigh
MacBooks and iMacs are reliable, high-performance devices known for their durability and efficiency. However, even the best technology isn’t immune to issues. Whether you’re dealing with a cracked screen, slow performance, or a battery that won’t hold a charge, addressing these problems efficiently can save both time and money. If you’re in Oakleigh and searching for tips to minimize costs without compromising on quality for Mac repairs Oakleigh, this guide is for you. In this blog, we’ll cover actionable advice to streamline the repair process and maximize the value of your investment.
Common Issues That Require Mac Repairs
Before diving into cost-saving strategies, let’s take a look at some of the most common problems that Mac users face:
1. Screen Damage
Accidental drops can result in cracked or shattered screens, one of the most frequent reasons people seek Mac repairs in Oakleigh.
2. Battery Problems
Over time, MacBook batteries lose their efficiency, leading to faster drain times and unreliable performance.
3. Software Malfunctions
Software glitches, outdated operating systems, and compatibility issues with applications can slow down your Mac and disrupt your workflow.
4. Overheating
Dust accumulation or faulty cooling systems can cause your Mac to overheat, leading to poor performance and potential hardware damage.
5. Data Recovery
Accidental deletions or hardware failures often lead to data loss, a problem that requires immediate attention from professional technicians.
6. Liquid Damage
Spills can damage internal components and require urgent repairs to avoid further complications.
Tips to Save Time on Mac Repairs in Oakleigh
Efficiently addressing Mac issues doesn’t just save time—it also prevents minor problems from escalating into major ones. Here’s how you can expedite the repair process:
1. Choose a Trusted Local Repair Service
Opting for a local provider specializing in Mac repairs in Oakleigh ensures faster turnaround times. Local technicians are accessible and can diagnose and repair your Mac more quickly compared to sending it to a distant service center.
2. Describe the Problem Clearly
When you take your Mac in for repairs, provide a detailed description of the issue. Mention symptoms such as error messages, unusual noises, or specific conditions under which the problem occurs. This information helps the technician diagnose the issue faster.
3. Ask About Part Availability
If your Mac requires replacement parts, ask the repair service if they have the necessary components in stock. Delays in sourcing parts can significantly extend repair times.
4. Back Up Your Data Beforehand
Backing up your data not only protects your files but also speeds up the repair process. Technicians can work on your Mac without worrying about accidental data loss.
5. Opt for On-Site Repairs When Possible
Some local services offering Mac repairs in Oakleigh provide on-site repair options. This eliminates the need to transport your Mac, saving time and effort.
Tips to Save Money on Mac Repairs
Mac repairs can be costly, but with the right approach, you can significantly reduce expenses. Here are some practical ways to save money:
1. Compare Repair Quotes
Get quotes from multiple repair providers in Oakleigh. Look for transparent pricing and ensure there are no hidden fees. While affordability is important, don’t compromise on quality—cheaper isn’t always better.
2. Address Problems Early
Delaying repairs can often make the issue worse, leading to more expensive fixes. For instance, ignoring a minor battery issue could eventually damage internal components.
3. Choose Third-Party Repair Services
Independent repair providers specializing in Mac repairs in Oakleigh often offer competitive pricing compared to Apple’s official repair services. Many of these providers use high-quality parts and offer warranties, making them a cost-effective option.
4. Check Warranty Coverage
If your Mac is still under warranty or covered by AppleCare, check whether the repair is eligible for free or discounted service. However, be aware that warranty coverage doesn’t extend to accidental damage or unauthorized modifications.
5. Replace Only What’s Necessary
Reputable repair providers will focus on fixing only the parts that need attention. Beware of services that try to upsell unnecessary replacements.
6. Learn Basic Maintenance
Simple habits like cleaning your Mac regularly, updating software, and using protective accessories can reduce wear and tear, minimizing the need for costly repairs.

Preventative Measures to Avoid Repairs
Prevention is always better—and cheaper—than cure. Here are some tips to maintain your Mac and avoid frequent visits to repair shops:
1. Invest in Protective Accessories
Using a sturdy case, keyboard cover, and screen protector can safeguard your Mac from physical damage and spills.
2. Keep Your Mac Clean
Regularly clean your Mac’s vents and keyboard to prevent dust buildup, which can lead to overheating and hardware malfunctions.
3. Update Software Regularly
Keep macOS and all applications updated to ensure compatibility, improve performance, and reduce the risk of software glitches.
4. Monitor Battery Health
Avoid overcharging your MacBook or letting the battery drain completely. Use energy-saving settings to prolong battery life.
5. Back Up Your Data
Frequent backups using Time Machine or cloud services protect your data in case of unexpected hardware failures.
Choosing the Right Mac Repair Service in Oakleigh
When it comes to Mac repairs in Oakleigh, not all service providers are created equal. Here’s how to select the best one for your needs:
1. Check Reviews and Testimonials
Look for reviews from other customers to gauge the reliability and quality of the repair service. Positive feedback is a strong indicator of a trustworthy provider.
2. Look for Certified Technicians
Certified technicians have specialized training in handling Apple devices, ensuring your Mac is in capable hands.
3. Inquire About Warranty Policies
A reputable repair service will offer warranties on both parts and labor, giving you peace of mind about the quality of their work.
4. Assess Their Experience
Choose a repair provider with extensive experience in diagnosing and fixing a wide range of Mac issues.
5. Compare Turnaround Times
Ask about the expected repair duration. Reliable services aim to fix common issues like screen or battery replacements within a day or two.
The Benefits of Local Mac Repairs in Oakleigh
Opting for a local repair provider comes with several advantages:
1. Convenience
Local repair shops are easily accessible, saving you time and effort.
2. Personalized Service
Unlike larger chains, local providers often deliver more personalized service tailored to your specific needs.
3. Competitive Pricing
Independent repair shops in Oakleigh typically offer more affordable rates compared to Apple Stores.
4. Faster Repairs
Local services often have shorter wait times, allowing you to get your Mac back sooner.
FAQ:
1. How Much Do Mac Repairs Cost?
The cost of Mac repairs depends on the issue and the model of your Mac. Screen replacements typically range from $150–$400, while battery replacements cost around $100–$200.
2. How Long Do Repairs Take?
Simple repairs like battery or screen replacements can often be completed within a day. More complex issues, like motherboard repairs, may take several days.
3. Is It Better to Repair or Replace My Mac?
If repair costs are significantly less than buying a new Mac and your current device meets your needs, it’s better to repair.
4. Can I Fix My Mac Myself?
While DIY repairs are possible, they can void warranties and risk further damage. It’s always safer to consult professionals for Mac repairs in Oakleigh.
5. What Should I Do If My Mac Suffers Liquid Damage?
Power it off immediately, avoid turning it back on, and contact a professional repair service as soon as possible.

2013 Slow Mac Mini Repair - SSD Upgrade - https://it-solve.au/repair-cases/2013-slow-mac-mini-repair-ssd-upgrade/
This week we got a 2013 Slow Mac Mini Repair in our Adelaide workshop. This is the last generation Mac Mini with an upgradable RAM and HDD. These Mac Minis run on a regular mechanical hard drive, which tends to deteriorate over time and requires a replacement.
2013 Mac Mini Repair – Deteriorating Hard Drive Health, causing slow system
Luckily, this is a repairable Mac Mini, and the customer is not bound to purchase a new one every time it fails.
2013 Slow Mac Mini Repair Process
Disassembling 2013 Mac Mini for a Repair
The first step, of course, is to take it apart. These devices are small, and everything is jam-packed inside.
With some patience, we can get into the motherboard by removing the fan and the wifi antenna shield.
Sliding and removing motherboard on 2013 Mac Mini Repair
Servicing 2013 Slow Mac Mini while for a Repair
Once all cables are detached, we can slide out the board carefully. This way, we can service the system. This Mac Mini runs CAD Architect software, one can imagine the heat it generates regularly. No wonder why the hard drive is failing and causing the system to lag and work slow.
2013 Mac Mini Logic Board
As we can see, the logic board of the Mac is very dusty. But most importantly, the thermal paste must have completely dry through the years.
Dried up thermal compound overheating 2013 Mac Mini Repair
Therefore, servicing these great machines is of paramount importance. Undoubtedly, any device with limited airflow due to the thin design should go for service annually.
Cleaning and reapplying thermal compound on a 2013 Mac Mini
Repairing Slow 2013 Mac Mini
The cause for the slow and laggy response from this Mac Mini is its mechanical drive. Over the years, it reaches the end of its lifespan and reduces its read/write speed. As a result, this affects each program that runs on it. Causing them to respond extremely slow.
2013 Mac Mini Repair – Slow System upgrade to SSD
Most importantly, it inevitably bounds a permanent failure, which, if not watched on time, may cause the drive to seize functionality and loss of data.
Imaging existing Software and Data on a slow 2013 Mac Mini Repair
Successful 2013 Slow Mac Mini Repair
Running extensive tests on a 2013 Mac Mini
It was crucial that the customer brought this Mac Mini for repair before it ultimately failed the hard drive. This way, we can now image the existing Operating System, Software and Data onto the replaced SSD.
Imaged Software and Data on a Slow Mac Mini with upgraded SSD
Imagine the agony customer would have to go through to replace and reinstall all that software accumulated since 2013. Most notably, all those licenses distributed as one-off purchases cost him thousands back then. Now, all that software is on subscription bases, which does not allow you to own them. And in the long run, costs are tens of times more than one-off purchases.

[Addie hummed softly in acknowledgement, but took an extra moment before finally pulling away. Their heart panged, but didn't look too disheartened, fortunately; they know they've had Sonny to themselves for far too long, by now. Besides, they still had their whole future together to look forward to.]
"That's fair... You do still have a lot of work ahead of you, Mr. Chamberlain."
[They mused, their tone lighthearted as they turned to face their whirring iMac with their hands on their hips. They thought about the strained relationships it contained - fixing things with everyone was now their new personal long-term goal.]
"I guess everyone does, now that I think about it... It's gonna take a lot of cooperation from everyone to build their new lives, after all."
[They crouched in the vicinity the machine, their tail's gentle movements stirring dust on the ground as they prepared for Sonny's departure.]
-Addie
"I..... I suppose I do, don't I...?"
[He followed suit, taking a sitting position next down to Addie as they crouched down to that dusty device.]
"I.... I hope I've been doing... well uh... enough.. But its.... gonna be slow work combing through all this manually... Usually, or er... back in the day... the servers would get combed through with an automatic scanner to get rid of old files, clear caches, let me know when there was an update needed..."
[He runs a hand through his greasy, mangled hair.]
"With just one it'll be.... Ah.. Uh... Anyway... I will definitely still talk to you through the... through the screen. Never hesitate to speak to me, for any reason, alright...?"

Okay, I finally finished Nancy Drew: Midnight in Salem, and thus the entire franchise (as of yet). The OG fandom hyped this game up to be the worst of the worst. However, in my opinion, it placed 15/34 in my ranking spreadsheets, below Secret of Shadow Ranch, and above Secrets Can Kill (OG Version).
The game's graphics are abysmal. I mean, I genuinely, unironically, think that Stay Tuned for Danger (the first 3D Nancy Drew game) had better graphics than this. In that game, all the character's looked like plastic mannequins... but at least they had some charm/character to them. The character models in Midnight in Salem felt like The Sims 3 graphics. As in, the character's faces were only barely different from one another, and the hair... oh the hair... it was so bad. No to mention, the world just wasn't that pretty either. It's crazy just how barren and sterile Salem felt compared to Skipbrot from Sea of Darkness.
I honestly wouldn't even be that mad at the live-rendered graphics... if the game wasn't so fucking inefficient. A game that looks like that shouldn't be able to make my M1 iMac sweat like that, but it did. I even had to turn Anti-Aliasing down and set the Resolution to 1080p just to play without lag. Not to mention, the Mac version seems to have a lot of graphical glitches (that admittedly might be caused by running the game through Rosetta 2 on an ARM Machine, but I don't know). Specifically, the worst was in the final cutscene, where a bright white light was rapidly flashing across the entire scene until the camera finally moved. It then returned once the camera return to Nancy's perspective. It was genuinely awful. For a game that took 5 years to make, and that is running the latest and greatest gaming engine, this game's graphics are hot garbage, especially compared to the previous game which was the most beautiful in the entire series. It honestly felt like I was playing one of those Unity Asset store games like House Flipper or House Party.
The animations were choppy, characters didn't stay planted on the ground and would slide around, the textures looked crusty and blurry, while simultaneously overly-sharp. In fact, the animations also felt like Unity default assets. Character's rarely, if ever, made specific motions for their words. They just stood there and played idle animations over and over. It made it feel like they weren't even talking to Nancy. Also, I noticed (at least once or twice, idk about the whole game) that the characters don't blink. Not to mention their awful, uncanny at times, mouth movements when speaking.
The plant textures were FLAT. There was no 3D effect to them at all. You could walk up to any plant, and it was as flat as a JPEG. It's crazy to me how resource inefficient this game is. A game with that graphic quality shouldn't be hard to run on a computer that can run BeamNG Drive at medium graphics through Wine and Rosetta translations layers with decent performance. I mean, I honestly think Yandere Simulator might perform better than this game.
The navigation was also horrible. You can really tell that this game was last minute switched from being free-roam to point-and-click. In perhaps a controversial opinion, I kinda wish this game would've just been free roam. It was clear that the point-and-click thing was an afterthought, and it made it so difficult to navigate around the world. Not to mention, the hit-boxes for the point-and-click system were majorly regressed. One of my biggest complaints with the early Nancy Drew games was that the hit-boxes for the click-points were small, and there was often just a bunch of dead space that made it difficult to navigate rapidly and reliably. This was fixed somewhere along the line, but in this game, the issue returns once more. The slow hover animation combined with horrible click-point hit-boxes made this a tediously slow game to navigate.
And don't even get me started on the cars. It's difficult to make good, realistic-looking 3D car models because they require more detail than most people think, but the car models in this game were awful. Hell, one of them was literally a BMW stock model without its badge.
This graphical quality of this game is just shocking, given it took 5 years to make this game (4 after the engine switch), and previous games were made in a fraction of that. Not to mention, this doesn't feel like a game that was made by a dev-team by a game studio. It feels like an Indie game that was made by one person using Unity Store assets. The visual quality is insanely bad.
My final critique is about Nancy's voice actor. Now, I'm not here to rag on Brittany Cox. Nancy's previous voice actor was icon because she literally voices her in 33 (34 counting SCK Remaster) previous games. I just got used to her. However, knowing now what I know about Lani, I can't say I'm upset that she's gone. Brittany sounds like she has a lot of potential, and if I'm being honest, my problems with how she voiced Nancy probably aren't her fault. She sounded pretty monotonous and unemotional compared to prior renditions. However, we also know HeR laid off a lot of people between this game, and its predecessor. As a result, I think it's safe to say whoever directed Lani did not direct Brittany. Brittany's portrayal honestly sounded like the voice you hear at the supermarket over the income trying to sell you rotisserie chickens at 20% off. I think Brittany has a lot of potential, and I hope her director does a better job in Mystery of the Seven Keys, but for now, I just didn't like her portrayal. It is her first game, however! If you go back and listen to Lani in Secrets Can Kill (OG) and Stay Tuned for Danger, she too sounds very different to what she eventually settled into. I hope Brittany finds a better groove with Nancy, and I'm hoping the series lives long enough for her to do so.
Now onto the positive. After all the aforementioned bullshit, what on Earth could sway me to giving this game a 19/34? The plot. I honestly feel like this is one of, if not THE best plots we've ever gotten in a Nancy Drew game. The drama was so juicy, and the foreshadowing was off the charts. I was concocting crack conspiracy theories before I even met half the cast. It was amazing to follow and so rewarding to watch play out. The Deirdre redemption arc was crazy, and I loved every minute of it.
However, I do have two notes when it comes to the Plot:
1: What tf did they do to Ned in this game?? Sea of Darkness was incredible. It honestly felt like a series finale because of how emotionally and solidly Nancy and Ned were wrapping things up. I'd never understood the Ned haters in the fandom, and by the end of Sea of Darkness I was at the peak of Ned Nickerson Apologist Mountain. However, in this game, everything is just uprooted. All the drama that is built through Ned's phone calls is never properly resolved. It was so unsatisfying watching Nancy brush it off in the end scene. Not to mention (maybe this was another Mac-only bug, but I doubt it), they didn't even bother giving Ned voiced lines in the end. It almost felt like they kept building all this relationship tension, finished up the game, and then realized that "OH SHIT! We forgot to wrap up the Ned drama" and slapped it in, last minute. It was genuinely awful. Some people often call Sea of Darkness the conclusion of the original game series and Midnight in Salem the rebooted series. This is obviously wrong because Salem was teased in the end of Darkness... but tbh, for the Ned storyline alone, I'm willing to headcanon that and believe it.
2: The ending was kinda weird. If Alicia had kept her mouth shut (which she was doing a very good job of doing), she probably could've gotten away with it. Hathorne House wouldn't have been hers, but there really wasn't any hard evidence against her for anything else. She had an excuse and alibi for everything, and she genuinely had covered all of her tracks. Maybe Jason could've gotten a plea deal and testified against her; or with Nancy, Frank, Joe, Deirdre, and Mei all knowing what they knew, she could've been successfully convicted in a court... but by the ending scene, I was fully convinced she was going to get away with it and get Nancy in trouble for breaking and entering... but then all of a sudden... out of nowhere, she just starts blabbering about everything... IN FRONT OF A FUCKING JUDGE. It felt really out of character, given how intelligent she previously was when it came to the law, and, just like the Ned wrap-up situation, this felt like an "OH SHIT!" moment where the team realized they'd gotten themselves into a corner and needed to get out of it, but didn't have time to go back and redo major story aspects, so they settled on this.
Overall, the plot is a very rewarding plot to experience, but would I play this game again? No. The graphics are awful, and even getting the game to run stably was a chore. It crashed multiple times (literally any time I took my wireless headphones out to go to the bathroom). Sometimes it even crashed at random, without warning. (Thank god this game introduced an auto-save feature.) The navigation controls were also just plain awful. While a lot of the early games were just as tedious to click on, their navigation scenes were much more predictable. In addition, those games have neo-nostalgic flare that this game just doesn't. As a result, it ranked slightly above average in my spreadsheet, but that's mainly for the plot. I, honestly, think this is the first Nancy Drew game with zero replay value because of how plot-reliant the enjoyability is. Maybe I'll come to love it. The characters were fun, but I don't know. My feelings about Nancy Drew games change as they age within my head, so maybe I'll slowly want to play this game again. For now, though, I'm glad I played it, but I'm also glad it's over, and I never have to play it again.
