Cats Vienna Revival 13.03.2022

Went today because I felt like it. There were multiple suprises:

No Carbucketty, no Electra and Tantomile and Coricopat were both played by male actors (Riccardo Sinisi and Tommie Luyben). Nobody in the booth. Gerben Grimmius who usually plays Skimble played Old Deuteronimus (I enjoyed his performance very much). I was also suprised that Andrea Luca Cotti played Mungojerrie because I thought he already had his last performance. My guess is that some of the cast may have Covid because we have a lot of new cases now in Austria, but I don’t know for sure.

I was also happy to see Birgit Arquin as Bombalurina, Hannah Kenna Thomas as Victoria and Anneka Dacres as Cassandra. I’ve never seen anybody else play these three roles.

Some things I noticed during the performance:

Due to Electra and Carbucketty missing some other cats got some of their parts. Plato played some of it, Jemima had a bigger role and one of the twins played also parts of Carbucketty’s routine. He also played the pollicle, a role which usually goes to Carbucketty or Bill Baily.

Most interesting was the ball to me: Cassandra danced with Demeter (yay) and usually Carbucketty dances with Misto, but this time one of the twins danced with him and Misto did some steps alone. There were also some changes during the Bomba section: Jemima was paired with one of the twins, because Tantomile was played by a male dancer. Some of the sections where only the women are dancing seemed a little bit empty to me (only because I know what it should look like).

Usually during the Rum Tum Tugger number Mugnojerrie and Rumpleteazer are sitting in the background, but today Rumpleteazer (Jo Lucy Rackham) had to dance during the number so Mungojerrie was alone. Usually there is a small interaction between M&R and Tugger but this time Mungojerrie and Tugger were just playing air guitars together.

Loved Alonzo plaeyd by George Maniadis today. He is my fave Alonzo. He plays him very proud but also very scared (and he is an absolute amazing dancer). I focused on him quite a lot and noticed some things I’ve never noticed before: In the first half of the Tugger number he is cuddeling with Munkustrap but Munkustrap sends him away to dance with the others (?). Also during Skimbeshanks: He always sits with Jenny and plays cards in the background. Today he also tried to flirt with her (?) but she was not having it.

Also Alex Snova played Tugger and I love how after dancing with Misto he always goes to Bombalurina, sits next to her and flirts with her. It’s such a cute interaction.

Birgit Arquin who plays Bombalurina plays her very proud but she is always very fun during the Gumbie Cat and the Rum Tum Tugger.

I also know now that the musical which will replace Cats next season is Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame and yeah ... not really my cup of tea. But the other musical theatre will play Rebecca which I quite enjoyed as teenager so I’m looking forward to that.

Cryptid Exotica headcanons

She is a eldritch being of darkness from an alternate dimension who is utterly fascinated by Jellicle cats and and is experimenting in presenting as one. The tribe accepts her even if her powers make her hard to perceive at times.

She gets along best with Skimbeshanks who is more then happy in being her guide in How To Be A Cat. He is the only cat who can see her in all forms. She is also fond of Tumblebrutus and Plato and feels a bit protective of them.

Her black cat outfit is her more cryptid form. she is a being of living shadow and darkness. In this form she is basically just solid shadows in the shape of a cat. Her tabby form is her true cat form and she can be perceived by all in his form.

She is technically genderless in her cryptid form but as a cat she chose to be female and uses She/Her pronouns.

Invisibility

Imperceptible in cryptid form except to chosen beings.

Shape-shifting

Dimensional travel

Isn't the rumour that Fuckwad *clear throat* sorry -Farquaad was based off of a Disney CEO or something and the fact that the whole kingdom is rumoured to be Disney itself?

People thought Ocarina of Time was breathtaking (and it was), just because times and our expectations have changed doesn't mean the feelings or the milestones of that time's changed.

Going off on the first part of this post. Swift's opinion doesn't mean jack. Modern movies rely so much on digital effects that movies are just dead, boring, emotionless films.

What separates the 98 film from this film was the added effects that were simply lightning bolts or rainbow glitter. The whole 98 film was practical effects, there's a reason why the TRex from the original Jurassic still holds up.

Special effects have to be used beside practical effects and so many films focus on specials which leaves the audience disconnected from the works because it doesn't hit the same, it can come off as robotic or lazy.

Also she played my all time favorite Cats character and the fact she's an artificial greedy woman ruins the whole character. Not to mention they completely disregard the breed Bomba is in favor of a marmalade tabby Shorthair because it's more recognizable than a Somali. Therefore removing the character's individuality compared to all the others given that Skimbeshanks is a marmalade tabby as well and the 98 film new how to make each cat distinguishable from the others.
