Choices : Heir

A scream echoes through the town a second before Tala takes off at a run. “Hannah,” she had breathed.

“Tala. Wait,” I call fumbling for my shorts. “Wait!”

A wave of adrenaline knocks the wind out of my lungs as it slams into me and I barely make it to the door to catch a glimpse of her black wolf sprinting down the block, a chocolate wolf following seconds later. Their howls muted by the wind rushing past my ears. Closing my eyes against the dizzying sensation of running while standing still I finally find my balance enough to open them to find Pete on the walkway staring after the wolves. “Follow her,” I gasp trying to sound authoritative. “Don’t let her out of your sight.”

The brown bear is charging after them before I finish speaking.

Finally filling my lungs, I roar, “Guards.”

They stumble from their houses wide eyed.

“Tala has taken off. Find her. There was a scream from the plaza. She went that direction.”

Fumbling for my phone, I try to dial Gulak.

“Braun,” Konnor states softly, one hand covering mine after my second attempt at Drew’s number.

“Didn’t I tell you to find Tala? Go.”

“Pete would die before he let anyone hurt Tala. The other two left. They will find her. You need someone here.”

“It’s not enough.” Finally getting my shaking fingers to hit the correct keys, I dial Drew’s number.

“That was Hannah,” Drew pants without preamble. “She’s not in her rooms. The cubs are missing too.”

“Fuck,” I growl. “Konnor, get in the truck. Listen, Trent and Naomi are heading your direction. You and your guards get with them, form a search grid and find my wife and sister. Do not let either of them out of your sight until the threat is contained. Understood?”

“Understood.”

“Braun, let me drive. You’re in no…”

I hold up my hand as a flash of a street sign shoots through my mind. “I don’t know how you’re doing this Princess but keep it up,” I mutter. “In the truck. I know where they are.”

The tires throw gravel as I pull out and speed towards gods know what, jerking the wheel as a pain shoots from my shoulder and down my arm.

“Braun?”

“I’m okay. She’s okay. That’s all that matters. They’re not at the plaza. Tell the others.”

A flash of my sister laying still and bloody on the ground, my heart constricts painfully.

“Tell Drew that Hannah didn’t make it. Come on Tala, show me where you are. Where are the cubs?”

Her heart pounds as the realization hits her too. Too many smells. Suddenly relief fills my body.

“She found the cubs. They’re safe.”

“How do you know all of…”

“She’s telling me. I don’t know how. I can just feel her.”

“Can she…feel you too?”

“I don’t know but we have to hurry. She’s not staying put. She’s looking for whoever did this.”

“Did you seriously expect her to stay put? Have you met your wife,” he smirks.

“Not the time,” I mutter. I jerk the wheel so hard to the side, I’m amazed we don’t flip as we skid to a stop. It feels like my shoulder explodes.

Pete battling a large black bear flashes through my mind.

“Konnor, go,” I growl. “The hedges we used to hide in as kids. Tala is hurt and Pete is outmatched.”

The grizzly disappears in the direction of the large hedges.

“I have got to make this stop so I can think straight,” I mutter, stumbling from the truck. Suddenly all air leaves me, the pain too great. The change burst from me and everything disappears. My other self gloating as we take off at a run. Arriving at the line of hedges, I find my wife struggling beneath the black bear’s massive frame, its paw crushing her windpipe before Pete attacks from the side. The roar rips from me as Tala lays in a heap, eyes barely open as she watches me. Her attacker scrambling from the area. “No, you don’t you son of a bitch.” I meet Pete’s eyes as I give chase and the young bear nods.

“I can’t believe I let that bastard get away,” I think as I watch Tala sleep still half changed. The bear that attacked having wolfsbane coating his claws and fur which inhibited her healing. Regal was amazed that she managed the half change.

“Mark is not going to be happy about this,” he had murmured as he administered the IV to flush everything from her system.

“I’ll worry about the Marrok when I know my wife is going to be ok.”

“You might not get a choice.”

“He doesn’t,” a new voice chimes in. “How is she William?”

“Banged up but she’ll heal,” Regal sighs.

“Marrok,” I sigh.

“How did this happen,” his attention turns me.

“My sister was attacked. Tala ran off into the night to protect her.”

The wolf’s shoulders sag minutely. “She’s just like her mother,” he sighs, his hand passes over my wife and the change completes. “It will get her killed one day.”

“She never talks about her mother,” I whisper.

“Tala was young when she passed. Did you find the bastard?”

“No. Tala and my sister’s guards are looking for him.”

“Your sister’s guards have been arrested,” Father states, entering the room.

“Where are my grandchildren.”

“Sleeping,” I nod towards the far bed. “What do you mean Hannah’s guards have been arrested?”

“It is a simple sentence, Son,” he grumbles, motioning Kevin forward.

“You don’t touch my niece and nephew,” I growl. “Marrok, I would like to request wolves to help in the search.”

Pulling out his phone he types a few short words. “Done,” he states. “I believe your Ursavus told you not to touch them.”

“I take my orders from my Ursinus.”

“Seeing as your own people do not trust you, Boy,” Marrok snarls. “I will not trust you near my wolves.” Pointing towards Bayley sleeping in a chair between the cubs and Pete.

“You don’t speak to my bears,” Father snaps.

“Father. Leave them. They are sleeping.”

“The heirs are not your concern anymore, Deserter,” Kevin scoffs. “Worry about your wolf whore.”

“Shut up Kevin,” I snap.

“What is he talking about?”

“Father,” I sigh. “I was planning to have this conversation with you tomorrow.”

“What is it?”

“I’m stepping away from the throne. I am going…was going to relinquish my position in line to Hannah. Now that will go to Ursula.”

“I am not having this conversation now,” his eyes immediately go to the Marrok. “Kevin, the cubs.”

“No.”

“Shut up,” Father snaps. “I don’t want to hear another word from you.”

I watch as Kevin gather’s the cubs in his arms.

“Kevin, don’t…”

“I said shut up.”

Ursula stirs in her sleep.

“Don’t cause a scene Baby Girl,” I think as I watch her eyes pop open

“Wha…” she mumbles, looking around. “Where are we going?”

“I’m taking you back to the royal housing.”

“No,” she states wiggling loose.

“Do not start with the attitude,” Father warns.

“Aunt Tala and Ms. Bayley saved us. I am not leaving!”

“Ursula, please. Listen…”

“You are coming this instant.”

“No,” she growls stomping over to Bayley and crawling straight in the wolf’s lap. Bayley’s arms wrapping around the girl as she watches us through half lidded eyes.

“I don’t have time for this. Kevin…”

A growl rumbles through both Bayley and a sleeping Tala. “Even injured and knocked out she protects,”I think.

“You will not touch my wolf in my presence,” Marrok states calmly.

“You will not touch the wolves period,” Pete snarls, pulling himself to his feet. “You heard Ursus Ursula,” he growls. “She is not leaving. Go.”

“You think you are in any shape to go against me.”

“I don’t need to be at full strength to take you…Sun bear.”

“You want to do this, lupus puer” “Pete don’t,” I order as the younger man lunges.

“See the insolence your wolf has spread. The Kings Guard should have the highest respect.”

“And the Wolfs Guard deserve no respect because they chose to protect my wife? If Tala was any other Ursus they would have just as much respect and esteem. Peter has proven he deserves both,” I snap. “You want to be disappointed in me, fine. But do not ever disrespect my wife. That applies to your guards too. I have a bear to find. Everyone who is not helpful in that task is free to leave.”

I wait for my father and Kevin to disappear.

“Bayley if you don’t mind…”

“I will watch Ursula,” she smiles. “And Tala.”

“Ursavus, I…”

“You are going to stay here and heal, Pete. Take it easy. You’ve earned it.”

“Braun…”

“Stay. Tala will need another familiar face if she wakes up. Stay with my wife…and your girl.”

“I have my best trackers on their way,” the Marrok states as we head outside.

“Good. Guards,” I roar. “They should be about fifteen minutes before they get back. Last update had them doing a grid search not that far off. Of course, the last update I had, Hannah’s guards were still out there.”

“Your father is right about one thing. Tala has influenced that girl. She is going to make a wonderful Ursa with you and Tala guiding her.

“I hope so.”

“Uncle Braun.”

“Yes, Orsin.”

“Is Aunt Tala ever going to wake up?”

“Yeah,” I chuckle. “She’s been awake some. It just takes a lot of energy for her to heal.”

“Really?”

“Look at all that food she ate at lunch,” I nod. “She’s healing.”

“She is healing really well,” Chad smiles as he checks the machines attached to my wife. “Another day or two and she will be out of here.

“Can I wake her up?”

“Not for too long, okay?”

The cub nods, patting Tala’s arm gently. “Aunt Tala?”

“Hey, Orsin,” she mumbles groggily, her arm tightening around the sleeping Ursula at her side. “How are you feeling Bud?”

“I’m okay. Are you…”

“I’m good, Bud,” she smiles. “How’s your uncle doing,” she whispers.”

“Worried about his wife,” I state.

“I’m fine.”

“So, you keep saying.”

“I also keep saying you worry too much,” she yawns. “Seems to be a family trait. Come here, Orsin,” she smiles, patting her side. “I promise you I’m okay, Little Bear.”

I choke back emotions at Hannah’s endearment swells in my chest. “We worry because we love you. The same reason you ran off into the night to get into a fight.”

“Don’t start,” she sighs. Squeezing the cubs closer. “I would do it again in a heartbeat. I should have been faster,” she grumbles. “Maybe I could have…”

“Don’t think like that. You both would have been dead.”

“Or maybe the important one would be here instead of me.”

“The important one is,” I sigh, taking her hand. “I love my sister but I would never trade you for her, Princess.”

Her grip tightens around the cubs. “But their…”

“They have you. I couldn’t think of a better replacement.”

“Aunt Tala,” Orsin squeaks. “I can’t breathe.”

“I’m sorry, Bub,” she sniffs, wiping at her eyes.

“Are you hurt,” he asks sitting up.

“Just a little bit,” she smiles.

I have a meeting to get to and you two have classes to get to,” I state shaking Ursula awake. “We need to get going and let Aunt Tala get some more rest. I will be back tonight, Princess.”

“Okay,” she sighs accepting the hugs from the cubs as they climb out of the hospital bed. “Have a good day.”

“Don’t miss me too much,” I grin, leaning down to press a kiss to her lips.

“Impossible,” she smiles. “I love you.”

“I love you.”

“Pete, you need to be at home,” Bayley states as I enter the hallway, standing in front of the young bear. “Please.”

“Tala…”

“Pete, you are not completely healed.”

“It is my job…”

“You will be no good to my wife if you aren’t fully recovered. Go home.”

“Braun, I…”

“She needs her guards at one hundred percent. The other three can handle her while she’s recovering. You can take today and tomorrow off. You’ve earned it.”

The younger bear opens his mouth to argue and the wolf presses herself against him.

“Listen to your prince, Peter,” she sighs pulling his mouth down towards hers. “Heal so you can be there for Tala…” she closes the distance between their lips. “And me.”

“In my experience, you can’t argue with an Omega wolf,” I chuckle, stepping around the couple. “Don’t even try. Congratulations, both of you. Take good care of him, Bayley.”

“Yes, sir,” she grins, diving for another kiss.

“Good luck, Pete.”

“It has been a really long day. I just want to get the cubs and go home to my wife. Can this wait?”

“What is this about,” I sigh. It would actually be easier to get everything straightened out tonight.

“Not a clue,” she smiles, motioning towards the meeting hall.

“Because you don’t have to wake them up in the morning. What do you need? I can get them to bed.”

“The cubs are no longer you’re concern,” he states, leaning onto his elbows. “I am taking guardianship of them.”

“I don’t think so. I am not subjecting them to you.”

“You don’t have a choice, Son.”

“Your daughter wanted them with me,” I growl, slamming the paperwork from earlier.

“I will not have your wolf’s insolence rubbing off on them. And it has come to my attention that I am in need of an heir. So, I will start to groom my grandson for the position.”

“Your granddaughter is the next in line for the throne.”

“Ursula is too far influenced by the wolf.”

“It is a moot point because I have guardianship papers. Legally they are my children now.”

“Who will enforce the legality of those,” he smirks pushing the papers back my directions. “Who is going to enforce your rights against the Ursinus? You want to run off and ignore your duties to play house with the barren wolf, I will remove you from succession. Orsin will be my heir. The girl will be sent to your grandfather to be retaught how to be a proper lady.”

My heart stops. “You can’t send Ursula away.”

“Of course, I can.”

“I won’t allow it.”

“I’m not stepping down from the throne,” I rush. “I’ll convinced Tala to breed.”

“I am monogamous for my wolf.”

“Father, please, this will kill Tala.”

I glance over at the cub seated at the opposite end of the table. “Orsin is my heir. Any cubs Tala bears will be next in line after him. Ursula is free from any royal duties. And Tala never hears the word bastard from your lips.”

“The girl still takes lessons. She will be married to a bear of my choosing.”

“At eighteen.”

“You are in no position to bargain.”

“You are in no position to break the treaty with the wolves. Tala finds out about this and she will have the packs ripping through all of the Ursidae.”

“You live in the royal housing so I can ensure that the rules are followed.”

“Deal.”

“I will have a list for you to look over. Choose four or I will choose for you.”

“Let’s go cubs. Alexa, we will discuss your disregard for the cub’s bedtime later.”

“Also, I wouldn’t let the wolf touch, Ms. Bliss again. She is a candidate for your future bastard’s mother.”

“Why would you do that if it is going to hurt Aunt Tala,” Ursula asks as we exit the building.

“Your great-grandfather is not a good person. I couldn’t let you go live with him.”

“But Aunt Tala…”

“Doesn’t need to know anything about what was talked about tonight.” Glancing down, I find her staring at me. “She wouldn’t understand, Ursula. This is the only way to get you away from your grandfather.”

“What if Aunt Tala doesn’t want us.”

“What?”

“Wolves don’t like strangers in their space.”

“You are not a stranger. You are her cub. And a wolf’s child is the most sacred,” I smile hoisting her into the truck. “You are always welcome around your Aunt Tala.” I hand her brother up. “She will tell you the same thing.

The Origins for my ideas.

I’ll admit the lectures provided during the studios HAVE influenced the roots of my web as the beginning of each path stemmed from these ideas. 

Newton’s laws of motion, Political & Social Movements, Sensory, Entanglement and Spiritual.

Newton’s Law of Motion

I firstly began to separate the basic laws of motion to the first, second and third. By examining the sort of technologies and phenomenons possible by each corresponding law did I begin to expand my area of perception.

Newton’s Third law of motion brought about the most obvious sidetrack which was rockets and space related propulsion. I am fascinated towards this field because of my all time favorite video game; Kerbal Space Program. Rocket propulsion, to archaically look at it in terms of the concept of movement/motion is a transportation method that moves forward by moving things backwards. This ‘opposites’ steadily got me to think of other moving objects that resist further movement which is linked with the sensory department of sidetracking. From Rockets I went to Jet engines because Rockets and Jet engines used to be categorized under the same type of propulsion regarding research and development. I also have a fascination with history and so my brain suddenly skipped possible connections and went to pulse jet to V1 bomb to V2 missile to The Blitz, which was sort of a psychological terror device used against the British. 

Newton’s Second Law of motion I staggered a little bit because the principles can be somewhat similar to the First Law of motion when trying to explore and interrogate the concept of movement/motion. I feel like my biases here stood out too much and prominently as I immediately moved towards satellites and orbital mechanics influenced by Kerbal Space Program. Orbital mechanics in a way can be the study of how Movement can be choreographed by the arrangement of other planetary bodies. Gravity assist is the form that I derived from orbital mechanics and this particular subject really interested me because of path related movements. Through gravity assist I remembered the most well known satellite that moved the fastest through the use of gravity assists; Voyager 1 and 2. Among these two, Voyager 1 made a historical Jupiter flyby and made groundbreaking observations. Thinking about Jupiter I realized that time I saw a video about Jupiter’s red spot and the Coriolis effect which was brilliantly spoken about by Neil Degrasse Tyson.

Political and Social Movements

With this branch I feel like I struggled to expand on. Starting with movements that actually matters in the twenty first and twentieth century; civil rights movement, gay movement and specifically first and second wave feminism. None of these movements really interest me despite the social momentum that it sparked because for these movements to create a paradigm shift within society requires a genuine and most often than not obvious problems to progress from. The political branch of the grand web gradually steered towards the historical impact certain movement/events have had to our modern world such as the cold war, Vietnam war and among other many coups. However, perhaps (and not that surprisingly) the most captivating political goal was to win the space race, even though I know yes it is part of the cold war in terms of technological armaments.

The Space race captures so much more than what most people may think about not just in terms of political motives but also though technological, scientific and most importantly cultural shift.

The Space race allowed for some of historical highest budgets for technological and scientific researches and in accordance has made countless breakthroughs in all fields of science. When NASA’s funding was not adequate enough Wernher Von Braun began to publicly appear on national television through Disney’s network and capture the American peoples imagination and fascination with space and deep space exploration. So space exploration caused many movements and despite its correlation with Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles and Nuclear weapons its purpose certainly was for the better of mankind.

When thinking of social movements I began to think of the physical spread of its ideologies and what other ways physical movements can resemble similarities with this sort of social movement and I began to think about the sound waves. From sound waves I diverged towards what James discussed in one of his lectures regarding wave - particle duality and how in quantum physics nothing behaves like you think it would. Quantum physics to its promising brother; quantum computers and Q bits leading to infinity, nothing is truly infinite so I thought about the heat death and the second law of thermodynamics of how billions of years in the future everywhere in the universe will be the same temperature. Did I side track too far? I don’t think so, I could easily back track and continue on another branch of ideas and that’s what I find so helpful about the process of making a grand web.

The branch that ends in Weightlessness and Hypoxia I didn’t really feel enthusiastic about when writing about it and was kind of just a filler while hoping that if I continued to sidetrack like this I would eventually get to something interesting... The other branch rooting from social movements that end in EM drives and Alcubierre drives however was interesting. To stem from type 3 civilizations I began to think about how type 3 civilizations would travel such vast distances as the speed of light would be too slow. I once heard about this theoretical transportation method which moves the vehicle by... get this... NOT moving AT ALL... The vehicle collapses space in front of it and expands space behind it and thus moving the plane towards the vehicle. This movement with not moving again relates back to what I have been considering to explore further recently.

Entanglement

For some reason I linked ‘imprints of change/discord’ with the feel aspect of sensory along with Entanglement. Through imprints we were once tasked to investigate historical evidences of movement rather than witnessing the movements live. Recently I have noticed the rain skid marks left by the ‘berries’? that fell from a tree nearby my house.

This reminded me of the Recurring Slope Lineae on Mars that made headlines in 2016. These movements happen cyclic and not constantly which is also something I found interesting and possible to explore.

Sensory

The sensory department of my grand web perhaps had the greatest and most surprising outcome that most influenced my final focus and extension of this concept sorting. Separating the most familiar senses of sight, hearing and feel I staggered the topics toward forms of static art such as sculptures and toys such as the putty toy which behaves strangely regarding movement. Through these diversions I began to think about a mixture of the two to looking up kinetic sculptures and other sorts of non Newtonian fluids.

Non Newtonian Fluids defy the conventional laws of physics and can behave both like a fluid and a solid. Examples of Non Newtonian Fluids can be things like Putty toys, Corn starch with water and fire and mounds. These properties the materials share I felt was interesting because they can flow and show properties of clear and obvious motion as well as also showing the resistance to movement and motion. I had a really cool idea where I could possibly combine the aesthetics of kinetic sculptures with Non Newtonian Fluids to show a movement that is stuck in time through the use of strange fluids.

Towards the hearing aspect of sensory I began to think “How does one HEAR movement?” I eventually settled on sirens and the Doppler effect of when the siren is in motion. From Doppler effect I also considered the light version of sound movement through the influence of wave - particle duality thus getting red shifting and blue shifting. From Red shifting to Blue shifting I knew that incredibly sensitive telescopes out in space use this phenomenon to detect exoplanets in other stars. In a way that is still movement because they use motion of planetary giants to verify its existence. The Doppler effect has compression waves in the front which was also another idea that led me towards the Alcubierre drive in the Social branch of the grand web.

The Feeling aspect of the sensory branch I somehow linked it my train of thought from the Newton’s Laws of Motion branch in Psychological warfare I oddly linked that with phantom nerves because soldiers in war lose limbs. From phantom nerves I went to phantom limbs and phantom vibrations with is sort of a tactile illusion and I had random ideas where you could create the sense of movement without actually moving anything.

This was eye opening.

Ritual

The incident with Randy on Tuesday had left most of the family feeling a bit better than they had been since the fire. They felt like their message had been sent. They felt like the man who had come to their home and violated the sanctity of Abigail’s gravesite had come to realize just who he had messed with. They believed that Bray would go to war for them, and carry the family into greater glory and strength than ever before.

Isabella though, noticed that not everything was totally well. Bray’s mental state was still on the unhinged side. And the new….thing he was carrying around had people worried. Erick and Catrina had been exchanging more and more nervous glances between them. The appearance of it had made Isaac visibly uncomfortable, though he hadn’t really spoken as to why. Isabella had tried to ask Bray what it was, but even she hadn’t been able to get a good answer out of him. He had just said she could think of it as his scepter and then walked away, humming under his breath.

It was with these things weighing on her that she found herself following him and Elijah out to the burned remains of the shack resting over Abigail’s grave. Bray hadn’t wanted to be around Isaac for some reason (it had to do with a fight he had with Luke before Smackdown, but that was all she had been able to hear before Cat realized she was eavesdropping and told Erick they would talk about it later), and Elijah had said he would help out in his place. She felt fairly certain Erick and Cat didn’t know that this was part of his “helping”, because they surely wouldn’t have allowed it. Especially not Cat. She didn’t like it when Bray tried to go anywhere near the grave. She had been heard telling Erick that she thought it made him worse, and Isabella was pretty sure she agreed.

She had nearly caught up to them when she realized she wasn’t the only one following them. Braun was on their trail as well, and when they both saw each other, they paused and glared, each one trying to get the other to go away without saying a word. Braun didn’t think she should be anywhere near there because she was a kid, and Erick had told him to help keep her away. She meanwhile, thought she had more of a reason than anyone to know what was going on because Bray was her daddy. She was tired of always being kept in the dark. She loved Bray just as much as any of them. She loved him even more than all of them. She was going to know what was going on whether they liked it or not.

The sound of thunder rumbling brought their staredown to a screeching halt. They looked up at the sky, which had been perfectly clear up until now. Now heavy clouds had formed, blocking out the sun and making it look like it was about to start storming heavily. They looked back at each other, the confusion on their faces completely mutual.

Bray’s voice carried out, his words ones that Isabella was sure weren’t real. The sound of them made her and Braun’s decision for them, and they went into the remains of the shed together, finding Bray on his knees, one hand braced in the dirt while the other held his scepter thing in his other. He had his back to where the door once stood, so he didn’t see Isabella and Braun approaching. Elijah however, who was standing not very far from where the door to the shed once stood, did. He glared at the both of them, the look in his eyes clearly meaning for them to get out. Braun merely glared back at him, while Isabella walked up to him, tugging on his pant leg until he looked down at her.

“What’s Daddy doing?” she whispered the question, taking a glance over at Bray to see if she was disturbing him. He hadn’t so much as paused his muttering in the slightest bit.

“Ritual,” Elijah replied, his voice gruff even as he whispered.

“What kind of ritual?”

For a moment, it didn’t seem like Elijah was going to answer. It wasn’t until Braun stepped closer to him, the threat on his face going unspoken that the other man sighed and relented. “Saw Abigail do this a couple times. Only when she needed it. Needed….power. Reinforcement. Before war.”

“War?” Braun’s voice was nowhere near a whisper, and Isabella turned around and smacked him in the gut. If Bray had noticed all this going on, he sure as hell wasn’t acting like it. He was still on his knees, muttering faster in tongues than he had been before.

“Last time it was when a law man coming for us. He was relentless. Corrupt even for them. She did this before we went to his house–her, me, Isaac, Bray….he wasn’t ever a problem for us ever again after that.”

“….So it’s gonna make him stronger?” Isabella frowned, not fully understanding all this.

“Or it’s summoning something that will.” Elijah shrugged at the looks they gave him. “I know she found it before the family existed. I know she felt a reason to keep it locked away, and I know he ain’t ever busted it out himself until now. I don’t pretend to understand what the hell this thing even is, because I don’t want to know. That’s for him to worry about, not me.”

That was all very far away from reassuring. Isabella moved so she could go stand in front of Bray, ignoring Elijah and Braun’s words for her to stay back. She didn’t want to stay back. This was her daddy. She wanted to be right there. She shivered as she stared at him. His eyes were closed, his words falling down to a hoarse whisper. She still didn’t understand a single one he was saying. She really didn’t like that. “Daddy?” She swallowed hard and started to reach a hand out to touch him.

“Isabella.” Braun came around to stand next to her, shaking his head. “Leave him. We’re going back to the house.”

Isabella ignored him, instead putting her hand on Bray’s shoulder. “Daddy?”

Bray finally opened his eyes, and the sight of large, black orbs staring back at her instead of his normal blue ones made her scream and jump back. Even Braun, who wasn’t a man who scared easily at all, let out a startled string of curse words. There was still a complete lack of awareness from Bray though. He was staring right at them, but it was like he wasn’t seeing them at all. He stuck his stick thing in the ground and stripped himself of his shirt, his movements almost robotic like. His hand was going in his pocket now, pulling out  his switchblade.

“Daddy?” Isabella shook her head, already trying to move towards him. She was barely aware of Elijah grabbing her while also trying to hold back Braun, his plea for them to not go too close when he was like this on deaf ears. “Daddy? Da–DADDY!”

Bray dragged the blade against his chest, creating a deep cut over where his heart was. Blood poured from the wound, though he hardly seemed to notice. He grabbed the stupid stick of his–the stick Isabella hated now because it was making him be scary like this. This wasn’t like her daddy. She wanted to shake him and make him stop this right now. She tried to fight off Elijah, but he wasn’t letting her go. All she could do was watch as Bray grabbed his thing again, his chanting getting louder again. He pressed the symbol on it–she still didn’t know if it was an X or a cross because it looked like both depending on which way he held it–against his bloody chest. It wasn’t an action Isabella thought much of at first. It wasn’t until a moment later, when she heard a sizzling sound that she took another look. The thing was turning a brighter and brighter red the longer he held it against him, and now she could smell burning flesh–it was burning him, he was burning himself.

“What the FUCK?” Braun’s voice boomed loudly, startling Isabella. She barely had time to turn to face him before he was shoving Elijah completely off to the side, and nearly trampling her as he went to Bray. His instinctive actions were one of violence, backhanding Bray so hard he toppled over, the stick dropping from his hands in the process.

“Daddy!” Isabella scrambled over to Bray, skidding to a stop by him on her knees, leaning over him protectively as she glared at Braun. “You IDIOT! Don’t you ever hit my daddy again!”

“It made him stop, didn’t it?” Braun snapped back.

“But you hurt him!”

“He was already hurting himself!”

Well there was no arguing that point. Isabella looked down at Bray, who was blinking rapidly, his eyes slowly returning to their normal color. The burn mark of the symbol on his chest was already fading, becoming just another scar on his skin. The bleeding of his cut was slowing down, the wound cauterized by his last actions. How that thing got hot enough to do that without any presence of a flame she didn’t know. She didn’t want to know. She suddenly understood Luke and Braun’s aversion to this kind of thing a lot better now. “Daddy?”

Bray’s blinking stopped as he looked at her, a lazy smile crossing his face.

“Daddy are you okay?”

There wasn’t an immediate answer that. He pushed himself back up to his knees, taking a minute to trace his fingers over his chest–and then he was lurching forward, his hands going into the dirt, heaving and gagging wildly.

“DADDY!”

“Jesus fuck–go get Isaac!” Braun was all but hurling Elijah again, panic making his anger more pronounced.

“Daddy it’s okay.” Isabella rubbed Bray’s back, unable to hide the fact that she was crying. “It’s okay, it’s–” Her words halted as what he was trying to puke up started to come out. It wasn’t vomit like she expected. No. She had to blink several times to even believe what she was seeing, but no matter how many times she did it, the vision didn’t change.

Snake. It was a god damn snake.

It came out head first, its eyes as black as his had been just a little bit ago. It was just over a half a foot in length, the scales shiny even in the dimly lit area they were in. When it was finally free it slithered away, leaving Bray to collapse face first in the dirt, unable to hold himself up anymore. Isabella tried to turn him over, only succeeding when Braun knelt down to help her.

“What the shit god damn fuck was that shit?” Braun slapped Bray’s face repeatedly, trying to get him to come to. “Bray? BRAY!”

Bray didn’t respond. His chest was rising and falling, indicating life, but he was completely unconscious. Isabella wrapped her arms around him and buried her face into his chest, her sobs coming out uncontrollably.

“Fucking getting rid of that goddamn devil stick,” Braun growled. “Don’t care what he says.

Isabella couldn’t have agreed more if she tried.
