Nostalgic Tamil Song 101: Sivaji Ganesan As The Hardworking Babu & The Beautiful Idho Endhan Deivam 1971
A screengrab from the 1971 Tamil movie, Babu starring the late Nadigar Thilagam, Sivaji Ganesan and a very young Sri Devi. It was pointed out that the first of October was Sivaji Ganesan’s birthday and had he lived, he would have been 94 years old this year. Sivaji Ganesan passed away on 21st July 2001 at an age of 72 and by then had acted in some 288 movies; a majority of it has been in Tamil…

Thiruvilaiyadal - Part 1
As a movie buff, one of my core memory is seeing old classical Tamil films with my Amma. She made sure I saw all of her favorites and some of the 60s/70s classics.
Every summer holiday is filled with stories of old Tamil Puranas from my Appa and asking all the pieces of information and questions. And my interest in the Tamil language grew as I become older and thanks to all my Thamizh teachers who made the class so interesting with all the Tamil literature at school.
Everyone around me used to ask why I am into Puranas and literature when the modern world is thriving outside, but all I know was that my soul wanted more and more.
One such moment which captured my heart throughout was the movie 'Thiruvilaiyadal'.
Thiruvilaiyadal (Leelas in Sanskrit) is viewed to be one of the 18 thalapuranas. It is also revered as one of the Mahapuranas (Periya Puranam – the right eye of Shiva, Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam – the left eye, and Kanda Purana – the third eye). It was authored by Saint Paranjothi, estimated 300 years ago. It narrates the 64 Tiruvilayadals, loosely translated as the "playful miracles of god (Shiva) himself".
One such Thiruvilaiyadal of the god Siva was with Nakkeranar or Nakkerar. Nakkerar was a Post Sangam Tamil poet who wrote Thirumurukāṟṟuppaṭai.
The below poem is part of Kurunthogai, which was written by Irayyanar( God Shiva himself)
Translation: O! Honey bee with beautiful wings, you live drinking nectar from selected flowers, tell me without bias look at my friend who resembles a peacock in beauty have you seen any flower that smells better than her hair?
The story goes as when ShenbagaPandiyan had a doubt regarding the scent of female hair and announced whoever clarify that doubt through poem/the best will be awarded 1000 gold coins. Dharumi was a poor poet who struggles for money went to lord shiva for help, lord Siva came in the guise of a poet and helped him with this poem. The king was happy that it solved his doubt as it says the women have naturally scented hair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scene 1: Siva introduces himself as a Tamil poet. Scene 2: Dharumi doubts him and asks God Siva who is in disguise questions to prove his knowledge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scene 4: Dharumi apologizes for doubting God's knowledge Scene 5: Dharumi gets the poem from god Siva and goes to present it before Pandya king.
When he was about to be awarded the Nakkerar the head poet of the Tamil Sangam stopped him, saying that the poem had a lot of mistakes, and denied the award and asked Dharumi to improve the poem. Dharumi went to lord shiva and told the same, lord shiva got angry that Nakkeerar found fault in his poem and went to an assembly and challenged Nakkeerar. But Nakkerar was not moved. Shiva asked Nakkerar if even the hair of the goddess did not have a natural hair scent?! Nakkerar asserted that it was so.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scene 6: God Siva shows his true form by opening his third eye. Scene 7: Nakkerar, now sees who is in front of him, even then he went on to say that a mistake is a mistake.
Shiva opened the third eye and was furious even then Nakkerar stood his ground, this shows his love for Tamil and shows the poet who he was. As he could not bear the scorching heat emanating from the divine eye he jumped into the water of the Golden Lotus Tank. Then at the request of the other poets, the Lord took Nakkeerar out of the tank and forgave him.
And that is how the story ends. Literally, nobody ever played God Siva more perfectly than Sivaji in Tamil cinema. As his name suggests he lived as God Siva. I wish I could able to translate the dialogue portion that happens at this part. But the sweetness and raw poetic Tamil lines could never be done justified during the transition.
I have to thank @themorguepoet for reminding me or taking me back to my memory where I cherish this classic with your post before.

Or if anyone else in the fandom feels they can tackle this, be my guest. But i do know when something is too out of my abilities and this is very much more than I can do.
I hope someone is able to write this for you friend, but unfortunately that's not going to be me anything soon 😅
Thanks for understanding 🙏❤️

Kannan Sundaram presented with Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite
Tumblr media
Kannan Sundaram, managing director and editor of Tamil Nadu’s Kalachuvadu Publications, was presented with the Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite – a French order of merit with membership decided by the President of France – by Thierry Mathou, ambassador of France to India, at the French Embassy in New Delhi on 5 June 2023. The award was conferred in recognition of Kalachuvadu’s work to improve the relationship between the French and Indian publishing sectors.
Presenting the award, Thierry Mathou, ambassador of France to India, said, “Under Kannan Sundaram's guidance and commitment, Kalachuvadu Publications has published numerous titles from women, marginalized communities as well as foreign writers. He has published the work of acclaimed authors in Tamil literature such as Perumal Murugan (who has won over the hearts of French readers), Sundara Ramaswamy (whose work often explores social and political themes), Ambai (a prominent feminist writer) and Salma (an acclaimed poet and writer with works that focus on women’s experiences and societal issues). In doing so, Kalachuvadu has played a crucial role in bringing their voices to a wider audience.”
Kalachuvadu is a leading publishing house in south India, known for its commitment to literary excellence. Sundaram is a well-known Indian publisher in the French publishing circles and a point of reference for the French Institute in India in terms of publishing strategies, he said. The French institute in India recently invited Sundaram to Delhi for a seminar on the Tamil publishing market addressed to a delegation of French publishers and the International Bureau of French Publishing (BIEF).
Since 2011, Kannan Sundaram has curated and published various genres, including fiction and non-fiction, from classical masterpieces to contemporary works by French authors. He succeeded in introducing Tamil readers to French best-sellers or iconic books, Mathou said.
“He transported them into the mind of a teenager vacationing on the French Riviera with Bonjour Tristesse by Françoise Sagan; he made them discover rural France and the French working class throughout the 20th century with the work of the Nobel Prize for Literature Annie Ernaux and he will soon immerse the Tamil readers in a story of love, identity and existential philosophy as he is about to publish the Tamil translation of L’Insoutenable Légèreté de l’être by Milan Kundera,” he added.
“Translation is vital because it bridges our cultural and linguistic divides, enabling readers to appreciate the richness of global literature. Translating works from one language to another preserves the literary heritage of diverse cultures and enriches the intellectual landscape too,” Mathou added.
Sundaram expressed his thoughts on receiving the award. “I am deeply honored by the insignia of Chevalier conferred on me today. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Kalachuvadu Publications. In all these 30 years, I have worked with joy, passion, commitment, and fulfillment. This honor conferred today was an opportunity for me to recall with gratitude what a terrific ride it has been for me. The opportunity to work with great publishers from India and internationally, with authors from across the world, to work with a committed team of colleagues, the joy of putting together many great manuscripts and seeing them published, the adventure of traveling to new places, meeting people of different nations, races, tongues, to talk to them, understand their perspective and read their literature.”
More than any other state of India, the Chevalier insignia is most popular in Tamil Nadu. “When the folks of Tamil Nadu congratulated me on being conferred this honor, they also wished me for winning the Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan award,” he added.
Explaining the context, Sundaram said, “For Tamils, Sivaji Ganesan, the thespian movie star, was the epitome of acting. Yet after 40 years of a very robust acting career, Shivaji Ganesan was not honored nationally with the best actor award. He was aggrieved and the Tamils felt a deep sense of solidarity with him. As if to rub salt in this wound, he was given a national award for the best supporting actor in 1993,”
“It was in this context that the Chevalier knighthood was announced for Sivaji Ganesan, probably the first to an Indian actor, in 1995. And he flaunted it up to the hilt. Till then, in the public space, he was always referred to by the honorific Nadikal Thilakam, meaning the crowning glory of actors. He gave that up in favor of the Chevalier. Now the best actor award given in his name is called the Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan Best Actor Award. A street named after him is the Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan Street. Since then, many Tamils have been honored with the Chevalier, including megastar Kamal Hassan. But interestingly, the Chevalier is indelibly identified in the public space with Sivaji Ganesan alone,” he added.
The basic principles of the French Republic – Liberty, Equality, Fraternity – are more relevant for us than ever before, he said.
In an exclusive interaction with Indian Printer & Publisher later, Sundaram said, “I am delighted to receive the Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite. I have worked with the French publishing industry for nearly 15 years now. This award is a recognition of the many books we have published from French into Tamil and the authors that we have promoted from France and worked with the French publishing industry in many other ways. For publishers, there are not many awards and recognition, mostly for authors and publishing houses. This is one of the rare occasions where the publisher gets recognized. It came completely out of the blue – there was no expectation or anticipation. I was not even aware that this award is given to publishers. I was pleasantly surprised and shocked when this email came announcing this award.”
Kalachuvadu Publications won the Publisher of the Year 2023 at the recent Publishing Next Industry Awards. About the recognition, he said, “Kalachuvadu Publications first won the award in 2018 and received the award for the second time in 2023. We are happy because most of the years, the award has gone to English publishers and apart from Kalachuvadu, no other Indian language publishers have received the award so far. It's a distinction and we are very happy to have received it twice.”

Experiencing the Dynamics of New Tamil Movies
Tumblr media
An important part of Indian filmmaking is Tamil cinema, a vibrant and prolific industry. The continuous release of Tamil movies not only caters to the diverse tastes of local audiences but also captures viewers around the world. This article explores the trends, themes, and impacts that characterize Tamil movie releases, exploring the dynamic nature of this film industry through the lens of new releases.
Tamil Cinema's Evolution:
Tamil cinema has undergone a transformative journey from the early days of silent films until the introduction of talkies. Prior to delving into the contemporary landscape of new releases, it is imperative to acknowledge its historical evolution. The golden age of the 1950s and 60s, marked by iconic figures like M.G. Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan, laid the foundation for the industry's artistic and commercial success.
What's New in New Releases:
A variety of genres has emerged in Tamil cinema in the present era, catering to a wide range of audience tastes. New release tamil movies are a blend of blockbusters, experimental narratives, and socially relevant stories. With its high-octane action films, soul-stirring dramas, and thought-provoking thrillers, the industry has successfully blurred the lines between entertainment and art.
Streaming platforms' impact:
The rise of digital platforms has revolutionized the distribution and consumption of Tamil cinema. With streaming giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hotstar actively acquiring new release Tamil movies, audiences worldwide have gained unprecedented access to new content. As a result of this digital transition, the industry has widened its global reach while also allowing for diverse narratives that may not adhere to traditional commercial norms.
Young filmmakers' emergence:
Tamil movie releases are characterized by a growing number of young, dynamic filmmakers who use innovative storytelling techniques and fresh perspectives. With their ability to weave compelling narratives that resonate with contemporary audiences, directors like Lokesh Kanagaraj ("Master"), Karthik Subbaraj ("Jagame Thandhiram"), and Mari Selvaraj ("Karnan") have gained acclaim. A new wave of talent injects vitality into the industry, pushing boundaries and challenging established norms.
Narratives with social relevance:
New Tamil releases have increasingly incorporated socially relevant narratives beyond the realm of entertainment. "Super Deluxe," "Peranbu," and "Asuran" cover a variety of social issues, such as parental challenges, caste discrimination, and rural empowerment, among others. As filmmakers become increasingly aware of the power of cinema to inspire meaningful conversations and change society, they are shifting toward socially conscious storytelling.
Spectacle in Commercials:
However, Tamil cinema remains rooted in the commercial spectacle, even as socially conscious cinema gains prominence. Featuring grand visuals, catchy music, and larger-than-life storytelling, big-budget films with A-list stars continue to dominate the box office. The enduring appeal of commercial cinema in Tamil Nadu and beyond can be seen in blockbusters like "Kaithi," "Master," and "Valimai."
Collaborations with international partners:
By collaborating with international companies and crossovering with other media, Tamil cinema is further strengthening its global appeal. The Tamil film industry is increasingly engaging with international markets, leading to coproductions, collaborations, and awards at prestigious festivals. As a result of this cross-cultural exchange, Tamil cinema's unique storytelling prowess is not only enhanced, but also appreciated globally.
Advances in technology:
New Tamil movies have been significantly enhanced in production quality due to the advent of cutting-edge technology. Filmmakers are using technological advancements to enhance the cinematic experience from advanced visual effects to state-of-the-art sound design. In addition to attracting attention within the Indian film community, this commitment to technical excellence has gained attention internationally.
Future prospects and challenges:
Tumblr media
Despite its successes, Tamil cinema faces its share of challenges. Filmmakers face challenges such as piracy, economic constraints, and the COVID-19 pandemic, but they are resilient and adaptable in the face of these obstacles. As Tamil cinema continues to evolve, its future holds promise, as filmmakers explore new narratives, genres, and storytelling formats.
In conclusion:
With its historical roots and present-day global impact, indian movies continues to push boundaries and redefine storytelling standards. New Tamil films are rich and diverse because they combine traditional commercial elements with socially relevant narratives, are influenced by young and innovative filmmakers, and incorporate international collaborations. Tamil cinema's journey into uncharted territory promises to be exciting and compelling as audiences eagerly await the next cinematic masterpiece.

When I recently watched a video featuring Sivaji sir and R Sethuraman sir, among other famous actors, from the Tamil movie Pazhani 🔗 https://www.facebook.com/reel/214565721436356?sfnsn=wiwspwa&mibextid=LYESl6 it highlighted an ongoing issue in India: farmers are leaving their profession due to poverty, unfair debts, unfair pricing, lack of recognition, and lack of access to grants passed for them in the budget. This brings up an important question: what will happen when there is a food crisis in a country? The answer is that we will be dependent on other countries for food, leading to inflation and unrest. Farmers, good scientists, and genuine priests are divine professions — "As you sow, so shall you reap". Without these people, any country will plunge into deep darkness. I hope the governments will do the needful to encourage & protect their interest's!! #respectfarmers #savefarmers #sustenance #fairprice #sacredtrinitydigiagency

INDIES TOP 36 SOUTH INDIAN (COMBINED TAMIL-TELUGU-MALAYALAM-KANNADA) ACTORS & ACTRESSES (COMBINED LIST) OF ALL TIME !
Seeing the increased popularity of (dubbed, not remade) South Indian cinema in North India these past couple of yrs in particular, we at Indies got a bit curious to know more about the history of South Indian cinema! (We may even do a Indies All-time South Indian Movies project at some later date, but not near future given it's very highly laborious nature). So next best & satisfactorily swift idea came across : To prepare an All-Time South Indian (Combined) Actors & Actresses (Combined) List! We fully understand South Indian cinema comprise of 4 different & each very heavily thriving, age-old, traditionally successful & famous industries on their own, yet given that many artists of South India work many if not all of these industries together, & have been doing so historically for a while, this from an artistic standpoint seemed the most logical & comprehensive at the same time. Now y'all very well know the very high stds we at Indies are world-famous for keeping in our assessments, & in keeping with that natural tradition, present our rather short All-Time Actors-Actresses Combined List, the lot behind the below-mentioned legends being just too too far behind, & uncountably so (nearly a lakh spots at the least & furthermore!) in most cases, for Indies to continue with any sincerity & integrity & expand it further, beyond the THIRTY-SIX number arrived at.
