solaris spoilers and dark themes also
solaris is so crazy it has you feeling sad for a PLANET (the planet's ocean).... although the whole thing is that its a bit silly to anthropomorphise an utterly alien creature (the ocean) by assigning it human characteristics, or by inferring human characteristics from its behaviours. bc we just dont know whether anything it does means anything and everything trying to found out its personality is inconclusive.
but the repetition of the idea that the planet is sad and/or wants to die is so... its so. what the.......... rheya (visitor)'s suicidal behaviour might be an echo of the original rheya's suicide but it also comes from the existential terror unique to her situation.... but theres also kelvin's mentioned thesis that like, observed similarities in strong human emotions (such as despair) in some characteristic of the ocean (I FORGOT.. IDK THIS SCIENCEY STUFF okay.)... and i think something snow said echoes this as well as just other bits in the book WHAT. WHY IS THE PLANET SAD
idk if this points to any condition of the planet or if it's just kelvin's perception of the planet, but his creepy dreams of being this disembodied force and being terrified were so interesting... i love dream scenes yay <3 and i kind of wonder if this is a twist of the role in which the ocean seems to read people's memories in their sleep, maybe these dreams are from the planet too and its like trying to make people understand its own situation instead of it trying to understand people by replicating them.
