I legit miss times when fandoms were just, less popular and seen as 'freaks hobby'. Ik it sounds hypocritical, but nowadays more and more popular fandoms are getting way and way more sanitized and catering to 'family friendly' content. I'm not saying every piece if headcanon or fan work has to have something 'dark' in it, far from that. But I lost count how many times I've seen characters in fics talking like they have degree in therapy or general fluffy-sation of canonically problematic content and complexity of human beings. That's why I avoid big popular fandoms nowadays because they're gradually becoming oppressive, no better than your average conservative puritan household. If you don't fit fandom's popular narrow definitions of how characters should behave, how ships should be like and what should and should not be shipped - you get called out
People here in fandom spaces always being like, "Why can't all the freaks and weirdos just go away!!??" as if history's most influential literature wasn't written by the "freaks" and "weirdos" of the world. You think a "normal" "pure" "unproblematique™" author could have written Catcher in the Rye? Or The Tell-Tale Heart? Or Macbeth? Get outta here with that shit.
#ofc not all fandoms and not all fandom people in such fandoms#but for example today i saw person with 'proship freaks DNI i ship only legal ships :D' whilst their blog was full of ship that are war#criminals on canon and tried to kill one another and are insane and manipulative af#and that person treated them as fluff AU bc apparently only way they can interact with 'dark' media is to take characters as barbie dolls#shove them in their barbie house and call out anyone whi doesn't want to play along with their rules#sorry for rant op but those fandom issues have been bugging me for a while
