Day 26: #roadtrip
Welcome back everyone! For those of you who read yesterday’s blog post, Snehaa and I decided to switch it up a little. Not only was she busy documenting our day for the blog, but she also was busy taking over the Northeastern Instagram page. And I’m not talking about the Northeastern GEO page. I mean the actual official Northeastern Instagram page. Like the one with 109k followers. She did an amazing job by the way- go Snehaa!
Anyway, here we are. A new day, a new blog post. Today’s itinerary was pretty simple. 4 hour bus ride to Agra, Taj Mahal, 4 hour bus ride to Delhi. #roadtrip Yes, you did the math correctly, that is approximately 8 hours on the bus (not including bus traffic!) and we made it out alive. However, I will say those 8 hours felt like an eternity. To show you what our journey looked like here is a screenshot of Apple Maps (not showing the traffic that we did unfortunately hit)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The morning started out in high spirits. Well, as high as they could be for that early 7am departure from the Lemon Tree hotel in Jaipur. Most people took the first hour or so to sleep, and by the time we started unopening the packed breakfast, we were all awake and ready to see the Taj. (Compliments to the wonderful hotel staff who packaged up some breakfast foods for us to eat on the bus!) Please enjoy the photo of Scott dancing along to some song playing in his earbuds. Pictured below is also a photo of us enjoying some toast before the bus left.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Olivia and I also had purchased some fun snacks for this bus ride and filmed a few fun taste test videos. Here is a fun screenshot I took from when we tried the Spanish Tomato Tango Lays chip and were cheers-ing. We even got Prof. Duane to try it with us.
While I will not be putting those on this blog post, please note that we enjoyed most of the snacks we tried and it was a good way to pass the time. We took a quick pit stop to use the restroom and quickly browse the souvenir store, and then were on our merry way to Agra.
Tumblr media
As soon as we stepped off the bus the hawkers sprang into action and throwing necklaces, magnets, and key chains in our faces, but no one stopped to buy. At least not right then. A short golf cart ride later and we were at the East Entrance to get a quick lesson on the Taj’s history. Fun fact: it took 22 years to build and there are 22 white domes that make up the Taj. One for each year it took to build! I'm not going to lie, pictures do not do it justice, but nonetheless, please enjoy.
We also learned that the inscription highlighted in one of those pictures is an optical illusion. The writing at the top is written bigger, but because of the longer distance from the viewer, it appears to be the same size as the text at eye-level!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let’s just say that it’s one of the seven wonders for a reason. It’s absolutely breathtaking, and we were lucky because the crowds didn’t seem too bad. We stopped at several stops to take individual photos, as well as a group shot. The photographer that took some of our photos was very keen on getting everyone one to do one of his guided poses.
I thought about putting in some of those individual photos here, but for all you parents out there- I decided to not spoil the surprise. Ask your kids for their photos! For now, just enjoy a few of the smaller group shots we took :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By the time most of the Instagram-worthy photos were taken, we were starting to get pretty hot and ready to move on to see the inside. Once we got inside the mausoleum, we weren’t allowed to take any photos. There was a security guard who had a whistle at the ready to tell off any visitors for taking photos. So, in the meantime, please enjoy this photo I got online that shows that the the beautiful inside looked like (below; left)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once we finished walking our little circle around the tombs, we were ready to wrap this tour up. Like I said, the Taj is absolutely beautiful, but at that point, we were all ready to get out of the heat and continue along on our journey. So we made our way to the exit, stopped to purchase any desired photographs from the photographer, got swarmed by hawkers again, and then finally got on the bus.
We stopped at a McDonalds for a to-go lunch to eat as we continued to drive the 4 hours to Delhi. I’m not entirely sure if the drive was closer to 5 hours or not, but it certainly felt like it. With a full day of traveling, we were all glad to see the sign for the Eros Hotel. For dinner, some people ordered take-out, while a group went to a local food court down the street that Teddy found. (Giving credit where credit is due) We ate at a Pan-Asian restaurant and then briefly scoped out the scene for a potential spot to hang out at tomorrow night. Stay tuned to find out if we actually end up going back to there or not. Well that’s it for me. We’ll see you all tomorrow!

Why Chopta is Ideal for Solo Travelers
For solo travelers, Chopta is a perfect destination. The tranquil environment, combined with a wide range of trekking options and camping sites, offers the ideal setting for self-reflection and rejuvenation. Whether you are embarking on a solo trek or just wish to unwind in the natural beauty of Chopta, it provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Solo trekking in Chopta can be an immensely fulfilling experience. The sense of accomplishment, when you reach the summit of Chandrashila or catch the sunrise at Deoria Tal, can be deeply rewarding. For those new to trekking, there are plenty of group tours available, which provide an added sense of security and camaraderie. However, many solo travelers choose to venture on their own and hire local guides, which adds an extra element of exploration.
Best Time to Visit Chopta
Chopta is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what kind of experience you're seeking. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide when to plan your trip:
Winter (December to February): This is the perfect time for snow lovers. If you're interested in winter trekking or just want to experience a snow-capped paradise, Chopta during the winter months offers an entirely different experience. The Tungnath and Chandrashila treks, covered in snow, become a playground for adventurers. Snowfall transforms the meadows and forests, creating a beautiful winter wonderland.
Summer (April to June): The weather during the summer months is pleasant and ideal for trekking. The meadows are lush, and the weather is mild with temperatures ranging between 15°C and 20°C, making it perfect for outdoor activities like trekking, camping, and photography. Summer is the best time to see Chopta in full bloom, with colorful wildflowers covering the meadows.
Monsoon (July to September): The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall to the region, which makes trekking quite challenging due to slippery trails and the possibility of landslides. While Chopta is less crowded during this season, it’s not ideal for outdoor activities, especially trekking. However, if you love the monsoon mist and enjoy the rainy atmosphere, it could still be a peaceful time to visit.
Autumn (October to November): This is another great time to visit Chopta. The weather is perfect for trekking and camping, with clear skies and mild temperatures. The autumn months offer amazing views of the Himalayan peaks, and the lush greenery of the region starts to dry out as the fall season approaches. This is an excellent time for those looking to avoid the crowds while enjoying the beauty of the region.

Best Winter Treks in Uttarakhand

Challenges of Winter Trekking in Uttarakhand
Winter trekking in Uttarakhand comes with its set of challenges, including:
Extreme Cold: The temperatures during winter can drop to sub-zero levels, making it crucial to carry proper gear such as insulated jackets, gloves, and hats.
Snowfall: While snow adds beauty to the treks, it can also make the trails slippery and challenging. Trekkers must be prepared to deal with snow-covered paths, which may require extra effort and stamina.
Limited Accessibility: Some trekking routes may be closed during the winter due to heavy snowfall or risk of avalanches. It is important to check weather conditions and consult local guides before planning your trek.
Shorter Daylight Hours: In winter, daylight hours are limited, meaning trekkers need to start early to ensure they complete the trek in daylight and avoid trekking in the dark.
Despite the challenges, winter trekking in Uttarakhand is one of the most rewarding experiences, offering serene landscapes, a sense of tranquility, and breathtaking views of the snow-capped Himalayas.

Discover the Hidden Gems of Almaty: An Unforgettable Adventure
Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan, is often overlooked in favor of its more famous counterparts. However, this vibrant city offers a rich tapestry of culture, history, and natural beauty just waiting to be discovered. Join us on an unforgettable adventure as we explore the hidden gems of Almaty.
Unveiling Almaty’s Unique Attractions
The Architectural Wonders
One of the first hidden gems you’ll encounter in Almaty is its stunning architecture. While many tourists flock to the iconic Ascension Cathedral, fewer venture to the nearby Zenkov Cathedral, known for its intricate wooden structure. This cathedral, located in Panfilov Park, is a testament to the craftsmanship of the early 20th century.
Another architectural highlight is the Kazakhstan Hotel, an impressive Soviet-era building that reflects the city’s rich history. Don’t miss the chance to take a guided tour to learn about the city’s past and its transformation over the decades.
The Art Scene
Almaty boasts a vibrant art scene that often flies under the radar. Visit the Kasteev State Museum of Arts, where you can explore a vast collection of Kazakh art and international masterpieces. The museum’s tranquil gardens provide a perfect spot to unwind after immersing yourself in the diverse exhibits.
For a more contemporary experience, head to the Tumar Art Gallery, which showcases the works of local artists. Here, you’ll find innovative pieces that capture the essence of modern Kazakh culture.
Nature’s Playground
The Great Outdoors
Nature lovers will find plenty of hidden gems in and around Almaty. Just a short drive from the city, Big Almaty Lake is a breathtaking turquoise gem nestled in the mountains. This glacial lake is perfect for hiking, picnicking, or simply soaking in the stunning views.
Another must-visit destination is Shymbulak Ski Resort. While it’s popular in winter, the summer months offer excellent hiking trails and beautiful vistas. Don’t forget your camera, as the landscapes are nothing short of spectacular.
Secret Parks and Gardens
For a peaceful retreat, explore First President’s Park. This expansive green space is often less crowded than other parks in the city and features walking paths, lakes, and sculptures. It’s an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll or a quiet afternoon of reading.
Additionally, the Central Botanical Garden is a hidden oasis where you can experience diverse flora and relax amid nature. The serene atmosphere makes it a perfect escape from the urban hustle.
Culinary Delights
Hidden Cafés and Restaurants
Almaty’s food scene is as diverse as its culture, with many hidden cafés and restaurants offering authentic Kazakh cuisine. Kishlak, a charming eatery, serves traditional dishes in a cozy setting. Be sure to try beshbarmak, a hearty meat and noodle dish that’s a local favorite.
For those with a sweet tooth, Bakery 1 is a hidden gem where you can indulge in freshly baked goods and pastries. The warm atmosphere and friendly staff make it a delightful place to relax and enjoy a coffee.
Local Markets
No trip to Almaty is complete without a visit to the Green Bazaar. This bustling market is a sensory delight, filled with vibrant colors, enticing aromas, and friendly vendors. Here, you can sample local delicacies, shop for fresh produce, and find unique souvenirs.
Conclusion
Almaty is a city rich with hidden gems that offer unforgettable experiences. From its architectural wonders and vibrant art scene to its breathtaking natural landscapes and delicious cuisine, there’s so much to explore. Is Azerbaijan expensive for Indian tourists?
Azerbaijan is generally considered affordable for Indian tourists, but the overall cost of a trip will depend on several factors, including the type of travel experience you seek (budget, mid-range, or luxury). Here's a breakdown to give you an idea of the potential costs:
1. Flights:
Airfare: Round-trip flights from India to Azerbaijan typically cost between INR 25,000 to INR 50,000 or more, depending on the time of booking and the airline. Flights from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore are available with layovers in cities like Dubai or Istanbul.
2. Accommodation:
Budget: Hostels or 2–3-star hotels in Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, can cost anywhere between INR 2,000 to INR 5,000 per night.
Mid-Range: 3–4-star hotels or boutique accommodations generally range from INR 5,000 to INR 12,000 per night.
Luxury: High-end hotels can go beyond INR 15,000 per night.
3. Food:
Budget Dining: Local eateries offer meals for as low as INR 300 to INR 700 per person.
Mid-Range Dining: Dining in nicer restaurants can cost between INR 1,000 to INR 2,500 for two people.
Fine Dining: High-end restaurants might charge INR 3,000 or more per meal for two people.
4. Transportation:
Public Transport: Baku has an efficient metro system with fares around INR 30-60 per trip.
Taxis: Short taxi rides can cost between INR 300 to INR 600, depending on the distance.
Private Tours: For guided tours, prices can range from INR 2,000 to INR 6,000 per day.
5. Sightseeing & Activities:
Entry Fees: Many attractions in Azerbaijan, like museums, parks, and historical sites, charge reasonable entry fees (around INR 500 to INR 1,500 per person).
Day Tours: Day trips to places like Gobustan National Park or the Caspian Sea can cost anywhere from INR 2,000 to INR 5,000, depending on the package.
6. Miscellaneous:
Shopping: Souvenir shopping can be inexpensive, with traditional carpets, handicrafts, and spices available for reasonable prices.
Conclusion:
Azerbaijan offers a wide range of options for Indian tourists, from budget to luxury. While it’s not as cheap as some Southeast Asian destinations, it remains quite affordable compared to Western Europe or other popular tourist destinations. By planning in advance and opting for mid-range services, you can have an enjoyable experience without breaking the bank.
