Hey friends! So as I alluded to in this, I finally got around to making the masterpost!

For a little background, I've shipped Reigisa for a while because it's just so stinkin' cute. 💜💛 So when I started shipping SquidBob, it really hit me that these two ships are extremely similar to each other. I did say I'm a sucker for the grump x sunshine dynamic after all. 😉

DISCLAIMER: This is not an amazingly researched, deep analysis by any means, though I did add receipts where I could. Also, basically every Reigisa screenshot in this post is from @every-rgsa-moment-ever - their blog is an absolute goldmine.

I invite any additional thoughts/conversation, as long as it's all in good fun. 😊

Anyway, this got pretty long but in order to keep it organized, I divided it into four parts.

1. BNHA—Fuyukoto

Look, Fran basically already covered Tddk, and while they’re my OTP, this is the kayak I have built with my own two hands and I WILL get more people on board it if it’s the last thing I do. Have they met in canon? No! Do I still have shit to talk about? YOU FUCKING BET.

First off, they have the same goals for a relationship—on Fuyumi’s end, I think it’s pretty clear that what she wants is domestic stability. Makoto, meanwhile, has explicitly stated that her ideal partner is someone “ordinary”—someone down-to-earth and steady to balance out the glitz, glamour, and chaos of her professional life.

She’s also extremely assertive in a way that I think Fuyumi needs in her life—someone like Makoto backing her up would probably do her wonders. Plus, giving Endeavor a daughter-in-law who has blackmailed a pro hero and gotten away with it would simply be excellent.

Speaking of in-laws, this ship would also make Naomasa and Touya in-laws. This is objectively funny.

2. Free!—Reigisa

I have such a soft spot for these silly little guys. You know that one post about being a sitcom b-plot character? These two are the fun little b-plot romance to Makoharu’s pining and drama. I love how ridiculously persistent Nagisa was in getting Rei to join the swim club, and I love the scene where Rei scoffs at the idea of him being affected by “something as illogical as love” like it didn’t WORK.

They’re hilarious, they’re adorable, they’re opposites attract, they’re absolutely whipped for each other. I love them.

Also, the water gun fight. The fact that Nagisa successfully ambushed Rei, then proceeded to walk into the trap he’d set earlier, was comedy gold.

3. Lego Monkie Kid—Dragonfruit

I was on the fence about this one until the Samhedi Fire scene. Look, I’ve spent five years and counting in the Tddk community—you give me fire and an “It’s your power!” and I’m gone.

To be clear, when I say “on the fence” I mean I was deciding whether or not I shipped them—they were luring me in, that just sealed the deal. I love the scene were Red returns Mei’s dragon plushie, I love their dynamic in general, and the fact that they were cuddling after the battle got me in the heart.

I’m not as deep in this particular fandom, so I’ll leave it at that—they’re cute, they got me in my weak spot, I like them!

4. Fairy Tail—Nalu

Is it even really a meet-cute if you don’t end up running from the cops?

These two actually hold the honor of being my first anime ship—Fairy Tail was my gateway anime, and Nalu was my first ship from it (thanks, Faun on both counts!)

I like how there’s hints that they could be a couple right off the bat, like Natsu’s arrival snapping Lucy out of the love spell when none of the other girls under it were affected, but that it isn’t fully a romantic subplot immediately. The focus is more on developing their friendship, and even though they’re not together by the end of the original manga, there’s not any question of why they WOULD fall for each other at some point in the future. Time and time again, they’ve saved each other, been there for each other, and just enjoyed each other’s company. I like a good friends-to-lovers, what can I say.

Also: THE FUCKING TREE. NATSU UPROOTED A GIANT RAINBOW CHERRY TREE AND FLOATED IT DOWN THE RIVER JUST SO LUCY COULD SEE IT. THAT’S REALLY FUCKING CUTE OKAY. Especially because, for those unfamiliar, he did in fact put the tree back afterwards.

And finally:

5. Superwomen in Love—Honey Trap and Rapid Rabbit

This is mostly an excuse to talk about this manga, because it is a LESBIAN SUPERHERO ROMCOM and more people need to read it.

Honey Trap, a villain, defeats Rapid Rabit, the heroine, in battle, gleefully removes the helmet of her costume… and is immediately smitten. As a result, she lets her get away, gets kicked out of her villain org, and ends up as Rabbit’s roommate, because Rabbit is the sweetest person in existence.

Fun superhero battles ensue as they try to take down the villain organization Honey used to be part of, while meanwhile Honey tries her hardest to get Rabbit to fall for her, and there’s a healthy dose of “and they were ROOMMATES,” which is always a fun time! Plus, one thing I specifically like about this manga is that the fact that they’re gay is a complete non-issue—the only “how can two women—?” of any kind is when Rabbit is (understandably I think) baffled by a different lesbian couple in the story having what’s essentially a biological daughter.

Superwomen in Love!!! Go read it, it’s fun!!!

Some shadowboxes I've been working on as of now. Reigisa is nearly complete, I have a sticker right now and some keychains ordered. I'm thinking I should get another sticker of similar size and place it like I did on the Touyuki one. Touyuki is mostly done, just missing the matching enamel pin of Yukito. The seller was out and I'm waiting for them to restock. The Elfen Lied is the first one I made not dedicated to a ship. It's just the series as a whole. These are the pieces I can find at the moment but I can certainly fit more in there. I'm currently collecting stuff to make a single character one for Yuki Sohma (Fruits Basket). I knew there would be like no Machi stuff out there and I just am a huge fan of Yuki.

I answered that in this ask (ID: INVADED), but I will also give other anime: Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again. When I was browsing through seasonal anime, it didn't even catch my eye. But when they showed the first episode at one of the manga meetings, to my surprise I liked it and decided to watch the rest myself. Interesting anime; funny but also bittersweet.

Romantic Killer!! I feel like there are almost no posts (fanarts are practically non-existent) about this anime, like it's been forgotten or just unknown. And this is really good!

Sometimes I randomly remember about Blue Period and I'm like "Hey, where is the second season?" As far as I know, the manga is still being created, so there is still a lot of material for the anime and I have to admit that Blue Period is something.

30. one anime conclusion you would change

I'm torn between Tokyo Revengers and My Hero Academia. The first one was a bit disappointing because it was way too happy enging. As much as it sounds, someone could have stayed dead or on bad terms with other characters. And with My Hero Academia, I didn't feel satisfied at all with the career Midoryia chose. I've read too many Vigilante Deku fanfics to believe he didn't try to work as a hero.

Edit: Shit, these were mangas, not anime xD My mistake So Banana Fish. Because OH COME ONNNN. It could have ended differently, happier.

Being a Huntlow fan is a weird experience for me. Because, like, I have a history of liking the least fandom drama filled ships. In Free!, while the Rin/Haru and Makoto/Haru fans were duking it out, the Reigisa shippers were all sunshine and rainbows. In the first run-through of Avatar, while the Kataang and Zutara shippers were at war, I was happily playing in my Sukka lane. (I was very worried when Sokka/Zuko became the big ship for the next generation, but mostly they seem to be leaving the Sukka shippers alone or doing an OT3 which is fucking rad) Even back in my HP days while the Golden Trio shipping drama was happening, I got to ignore it all with my fellow Deamus shippers.

So it's a new experience for me to be part of the fandom getting ship hate. I've been in online fandom spaces for over 20 years and I am just shocked I don't know how to deal with this.

Part 4: Reigisa & SquidBob: The Differences

So, I've talked about how these ships are similar - which was the whole idea behind this entire masterpost in the first place. However, it'd be remiss not to cover how these ships differ from each other as well.

To get it out of the way, I'll state the obvious: one ship is two sea creatures and the other is two anime school boys. They could not be more different in that regard... but I won't be covering that below.

How their relationship has evolved in canon

Looking back at the previous parts of this post, it would be easy to say this is just another similarity between them. And, don't get me wrong, it totally is! However, when we take each show's canon at face value without looking deeper, the relationships do look a bit different.

From a purely canon "Free!" perspective, Rei and Nagisa are regarded as best friends, and see each other as such.

When it comes to the canon in "Spongebob Squarepants," this still seems to be more one-sided - at least publicly. Squidward has shown time and time again that he does care about Spongebob, but this primarily comes out in moments where a) he thinks no one of importance is watching (i.e., mutual acquaintances/friends) or b) the circumstances are dire.

"Spongebob, no matter what I've said, I've always sort of liked you." (Squidward Tentacles, "Graveyard Shift")

One instance that comes to mind for Squidward is the end of "Fools in April," when he apologizes to Spongebob for the hurtful prank he pulled. During this apology, he admits that he likes him (and all their friends), he likes living next door, and he likes "hearing [his] foghorn alarm in the morning and [his] high-pitched giggling at night." When Spongebob finally comes out and asks him if it's all true, he's groveling on the ground, confessing that "yes, yes, Spongebob. Yes, it's all true." He struggled to say this to Spongebob at first as he wasn't one to apologize anyway. But, when it really came down to it, this confession was for Spongebob and Spongebob alone.

When he realizes that everyone else heard what he said, only THEN does he take it back and pretend it was all a joke.

Many of the episodes we've gotten of Squidward being genuinely kind (or even flirty) to Spongebob often happen when no one - or at least no one he will likely meet again - is around to see it (ex. Pizza Delivery, Bubble Bass' Tab, etc.). Spongebob on the other hand...

It begs the question: why is Squidward so concerned with his and Spongebob's mutual connections noticing that he cares about Spongebob? ORRRR... is it that he's worried that they'll catch on to how much he cares about Spongebob?

This brings me to...

Acceptance of feelings

Now that we've talked about where these two dynamic duos started out and how their actions towards each other have changed, it's time to look at how they seem to feel about each other in regards to their relationship.

When we look at Reigisa, it's clear that Rei has completely accepted Nagisa. In all of Nagisa's optimistic, pushy, hyperactive, and generally childish nature - Rei seems to have embraced it all.

I mean, look at these two acting like a proper couple out here on main. In public. Right in front of our salads.

Basically, Rei - who has been routinely stuck in his ways and overthinks everything - no longer gives a single fuck. While the old Rei would've been embarrassed and awkward about Nagisa's affections, the Rei we know later on has fully thrown caution to the wind and he clearly loves Nagisa too much to care what others think about it.

I've mentioned how Spongebob and Nagisa have both openly told their person "I love you." Even Squidward has said this out loud (which I will get to!). And while Rei hasn't blatantly said these three words to my knowledge, just see the way he looks at Nagisa. He doesn't even have to.

Meanwhile, SquidBob is totally there, too. I doubt I would be as fascinated by them as I am if that weren't the case!

I mean, LOOK. They have their own PJ/sleepover moments, too!

However, the fundamental difference here is that while Rei has let go of any expectations of himself to be with Nagisa (he's... free 😉), Squidward is unable to fully do the same with Spongebob for some reason.

I think it's obvious to anyone that Spongebob loved/was infatuated with Squidward from the beginning and his feelings only seem more apparent in the later seasons. Squidward has also made massive progress since then... but there's always a catch.

"I love him... and I hate him." (Squidward Tentacles, "Sponge on the Run") *Tenderly holds Spongebob's hands, getting down on one knee* "You know I... hate you, right?" (Squidward Tentacles, "SpongeBob You're Fired")

MAKE UP YOUR MIND, SQUIDWARD. He is a walking contradiction when it comes to our little spongey friend and he is so close to figuring it out.

However, as I demonstrated above, it doesn't seem like he's ready to take the leap. I personally think he loves Spongebob just as much as Rei loves Nagisa, but he is so self-conscious about being perceived a certain way and/or being embarrassed by Spongebob. Therefore, as we saw in the last post, he thinks he needs to be with people who have the exact same personality as him for it to work... but it never seems to last. (For context, the tweet from Vincent Waller essentially confirms that Squilvia & Squidward are over).

All in all, these two pairings represent the difference between an established relationship (Reigisa) and a slow-burn romance (SquidBob) - they are very much on the same level in terms of cuteness and how much we love seeing their relationships develop BUT they are at very different stages in those relationships.

Regardless of what their "official" relationship statuses are, they are both very much canon in my heart. 🌈💖

14. What are five of your favorite ships? (In the rp community or otherwise)

Uhh... Haikaveh and Cynonari are two of my currently faves (read: hyperfixation), but I also love other ships and enjoy exploring other ships (and not all romantic--platonic and familial as well)

As for other fandoms and ships I've hyperfixated on, I love Reigisa (Rei x Nagisa) from Free!, YuuMika from Owari no Seraph and SorMik (Sorey x Mikleo) from Tales of Zesteria.

15. What sort of muses do you tend to write?

Oh man, I write a mix! I've written more quiet and subdued muses, some that are more extroverted and energetic and everything in between.

I tend to gravitate to muses that are different from myself, so muses like Lyney from Genshin and Nagisa from Free! who are more outgoing than I usually am. Kaveh is also outgoing, but not as overly extroverted as someone like Nagisa, and I relate to him a lot in regards to things like depression and self-deprecation. He is far smarter than me, but I actually enjoy learning new things by roleplaying him.

I also love characters with a more dry and kind of snarky personality like Tighnari from Genshin, Haruhi from Ouran High School Host Club and Mikleo from Tales of Zesteria.

It really just depends on who I tend to make a connection with. I point at them through the screen and go 'I'm going to write you' rofl
