this is an old prompt that’s been sitting in my ask for two weeks but you’re welcome to send me these prompts!

Percy had never been the greatest cook in the world, but he was a fair hand at it. Or, two hands, perhaps. (It had been an old habit of his, when he was little and short, to grip his mother’s big wooden spoons with both hands as she guided him in stirring his father’s ibwen stew; he’d never grown out of it, even now, when he was four times as tall.)

Tea, however. Tea he could do. Tea was about the only thing he had left of his mother’s Terran life; Winona kept a careful eye on the plant he had growing down in the engine room, and though he’d never grown one himself he was sure there had never been a healthier plant in all of the black.

He didn’t allow himself many rituals, careful to keep himself in check lest someone outside the ship catch him out for being brainweird, but morning tea immediately after falling from his bunk was something not to be broken. Sometimes Varira would join him, drinking quietly save the occasional ask about his day’s plans. Never before had he seen Elila-- Lila, he supposed-- in the kitchen before, blinking at the kettle with her secondary oculars like she’d never seen one before.

“You’d think it had teeth,” Percy joked, and Lila leapt about a foot out of her skin and whirled around. Clairvoyants didn’t blush, but they’d been in the black together for a span or more now, and Percy could read her tells from a mile away. You didn’t need colorshift to catch her embarrassment.

“No,” Lila said, softly, the way she always spoke. “I did not think it had teeth.” Percy smiled reassuringly as Lila stumbled over the ‘th’ sounds, her risp prominent in her fluster.

“No worries,” he said, trying to brush it off. “The blue button, there. Just press it and it’ll brew.”

“Not the yellow one, surely?” Lila enquired, but she did as he said, and her oculars blinked as the kettle made a squealing noise and started warming up.

“No,” Percy said, and settled at the makeshift table Jethro had constructed out of old canisters and woodblocks. “The yellow button does some fancy molecular conversion so Maed can have her iik in in the morning. It’s indistinguishable from gas to my tongue and probably yours. Don’t press the yellow one.”

“Noted,” Lila said, and reached for two mugs. Percy’s was an old bronze thing he’d picked up in a bazaar on Kavula. Lila’s was new-old, a simple beige thing with a red rim and a chip in the handle Jethro had given her after a successful job.

“I didn’t know you liked tea,” Percy said, watching Lila shuffle through his teatin.

“I have never had it before,” Lila replied. “But you seem to like it so much. I was curious. You take two sugars?” She was holding up the sugar jaw with interest, staring at the faintly purple granules with unblinking eyes.

“I do take two sugars,” Percy said. “Not two granules. Two spoonfuls. Heaping spoonfuls. You’ve been paying attention.”

Lila tugged on a white curl, shifting uncomfortably. “I had hope to surprise you,” she confessed. “Or I thought at least to bring you something comforting in time of great stress. It may never have been needed. But I would have the knowledge all the same.”

Percy was touched, but saved from formulating a response by the kettle whistling.
