Which part of "The Sun, In Your Eyes" was the hardest to write?
Hi anon! For The Sun, In Your Eyes, the hardest part to write definitely was Shinobu and Giyuu's conversation.
I have a lot of thoughts about the layers and layers behind Shinobu's persona and the way she interacts with Giyuu, but it's a lot of exposition to throw at readers without anchoring it in a scene somehow. I actually wanted to write a Shinobu-and-Giyuu centric fic specifically addressing Shinobu's plan to kill Douma and how Giyuu might react to that plan, because wow did those manga chapters give a lot of insight into Shinobu's motives, but it never quite worked out and I decided to fold those thoughts into this story instead.
So I had all these ideas I wanted to convey but trying to make them come out naturally as part of Giyuu's thought process (and not just obviously "hey the author had these thoughts and she's gonna ramble about them now!") was pretty difficult. Actually writing Shinobu's dialogue with Giyuu was hard too, because she always has multiple layers of motives and her words are always extra sharp with Giyuu, and yet in this story I think she would be a little softer around the edges since it's New Year's Eve, she knows she'll die soon, and she has Kanao with her. It was quite a hard balance to strike...
I honestly thought I'd struggle more with Tanjirou's Dance of the Fire God and how to end this fic because fic endings are always hard for me, but haha I remember panicking because it was Dec 31 and as a New Year fic I wanted to post it on NY's eve and I was rushing through the last thousand or so words of this fic right before dinner. But once Tanjirou went back to Giyuu after the dance, the words just flowed. My Giyuu-muse knew exactly what he wanted to say and how to react, it seems.
