A/N: Again, reminder that this interlude takes place prior to the beginning of this AU and up until ch10, so yes most of it overlaps with the main story, with Riko’s POV. Without further ado, here’s part2! Words: 7,043
Riko inhales deeply, filling her lungs with the fresh and floral aroma, and exhales deeply with her eyes closed. Her prediction back in the winter holidays was true - Dia’s private garden is indeed breathtaking.
In the heat of the summer, the sakura trees and many flowers have been Charmed to blossom since spring time, creating a picturesque scene to welcome any visitors. With the pink petals gently rustling along the breeze and the grass so green and full of vitality, she almost has the urge to lie down and allow nature to envelope her senses.
How fortunate she is to visit the Kurosawa Estate again.
Unlike the winter vacation, Riko has made peace with her demons, at least to a certain extent. She alternates in between staying home, visiting Chika and You, and meeting up with Dia, Mari and Kanan. She enjoys patching up the distance between her and her two best friends, as well as grow closer to the three seniors.
Needless to say, she had been alarmed to learn that the hooded figures had targeted Dia again. Mari and Kanan readily bring her to the Kurosawa Estate like last time, and while Dia grumbles about their fussing, she at least seems pleased to have Riko here.
Today is especially a fine day for them, for many of the Elders have left the Estate for meetings and so they fully made use of the lighter surveillance around the main compounds. Dia is able to spend some time with Ruby, and have Kanan and Mari, both in their Animagus form, accompany Ruby back to her side of the compound. Dia has already done so a few times in the past, and from her two friends’ narration, Ruby seems to enjoy their company.
At least, Kanan and Mari are able to play the role of an older sister when Dia cannot. Riko could tell this bothers Dia a great deal, understandably so, though she feels rather helpless about this situation.
To keep Dia distracted, the younger witch talks of her summer adventures with Chika and You, about the former’s massive pet dog Shiitake and the latter’s father, who works as a ship captain and had taken them out to the sea once.
As they walk around the garden, Riko inevitably finds herself asking Dia about those attacks, not that she could do anything to help the situation. A stubborn and hopeful part of her insists that, as long as she knows more details, she might be able to offer some sort of advice. The self-defeating part just scoffs at such notion.
Dia, being the kind girl she is, senses her restlessness and does as she requests.
“I am nearly certain that they are after my blood, the blood of a Pureblood heiress in its prime,” Dia murmurs evenly, as if she were discussing the weather and not about threats aimed at her person. “Perhaps the quill was even meant for me in the first place. You were simply unfortunate enough to have stumbled upon it before me.”
“No, Dia-san. I can see where this is going,” Riko walks in front of the taller witch to gaze at her face to face. “Those unknown attackers are at fault. We are the victims. So, don’t even think about blaming yourself.”
Dia’s lips quirk in slight amusement. “Then, have you stopped thinking that you brought Kanan-san, Mari-san and myself into this situation?”
“That’s different,” Riko sighs tiredly. “If it weren’t for me, you could have requested Aurors, or even other members of your family, to increase security or even try to trace these attackers. The terms for the Unbreakable Vow were rather ambiguous, so perhaps we should-”
“No. Nothing is worth risking your life, Riko-san. I can defend myself just fine.”
Dia sounds rather angry, so Riko simply nods and drops the issue for now. That magical contract has always been an enigma for them, though they dare not test its limits in case it is accidentally broken and that would be fatal for her. When the three older witches first found Riko and the unconscious Chika and You, Riko had felt the Vow’s magic extending to them, binding them for reasons unknown. Perhaps this is due to Dia’s own conflict against the hooded assailants, making her and her friends ‘qualify’ and be included in the Vow.
They cannot know for sure, but that doesn’t make Riko feel any less guilty.
“I just want you to understand that you are important to m… us,” Dia’s expression softens as she reaches for a stray petal that has landed on Riko’s shoulder. When she carefully cradles the pink sakura in her palm, Riko has to avert her gaze for the simple gesture fills her with self-consciousness.
Dia clears her throat and speaks in a more neutral tone. “Well then, what of your studies so far? What have you been working?”
More comfortable with such topic, Riko eagerly discusses the various potions she was able to brew, as well as the spells she mastered. She is especially pleased with one particular Charm.
“Incredible. Mari-san, Kanan-san and I only managed to cast the Patronus Charm in the middle of our Third-Year,” Dia observes the silver feline prancing around the garden. The corporeal Charm is shimmering brightly, its Kneazle-like tail flicking and its paws gracefully stepping onto the grass.
“Truthfully, I thought I’d have trouble conjuring it,” Riko dispels the Charm and turns away from the older girl, fiddling with her wand. “But I was able to think of the happy times, drawing strength from them just as how I always do in my studies.”
“Your goal of becoming a Mediwitch is unwavering, fueled by a positive emotion which is what the Charm needs,” Dia’s voice then drops to a rather embarrassed tone. “You have shown me something private about yourself, Riko-san, so it is only fair that I do the same. Expecto Patronum.”
Riko blinks at the glimmering king penguin sliding over the grass on its belly. The corporeal Charm flips over and waddles on its feet, tilting its head at her. Cute as it may appear, she could sense its immense power, which reflects its caster’s magic.
“Unexpected, yes?”
There are many comments flying in Riko’s head, and she could almost hear Mari’s jokes, so she decides for a curt nod in case she disrespects her senior.
“Ahem. Well, my Patronus used to match my Animagus form, but… as you can see, mine, Mari-san’s and Kanan-san’s are all aquatic creatures. During last summer, we had an adventure of some sorts in the Black Lake, and that must have caused our Patronus to change.”
Too surprised to comment, Riko could only blink up at the taller girl. Now that Dia has mentioned it, Riko did wonder why Kanan and Mari turn into a wolf and cat respectively, when their Patronus Charms are a dolphin and a seal.
Also, she hasn’t ever seen Dia’s Animagus form.
“That is a tale for another time, one that I am certain Mari would be delighted in sharing. It is not mine to tell,” Dia shakes her head, dispelling the harmless-looking penguin with a flick of her wand. “Hmm? Is something the matter?”
“Uh, well, I was just thinking, how the three of you are able to achieve your Animagus forms. It’s highly complex magic and takes incredible time and effort… ah, I’m not doubting your skills or anything-”
“I agree, Riko-san. Thinking back, I still wonder from time to time how we managed it,” Dia is wearing a fond, nostalgic smile. “Kanan-san did work very hard, while it comes rather easily for Mari-san. Again, it is their story to tell, not mine. I just did it, to prove that I could too.”
Riko nods hesitantly. She knows that Dia is competitive, a quality she could understand as well, but this just shows how amazing the heiress is. Once again, she feels humbled to be able to speak with and learn from Dia.
“M-May I see it?” Those words slips out of her mouth before she could stop them.
“Pardon?”
She licks her dry lips and whispers bashfully. “Your Animagus form… may I see it?”
Dia makes a rather comical expression then, her eyes wide in surprise. A tense silence passes by before Riko covers her face in embarrassment at her silly request. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have asked. It must be a sensitive secret, right? I mean, Mari-san and Kanan-san only revealed their forms to me because of their patrols and frequent Transformations. Please forget that I asked, Dia-san, you don’t have to-?”
Finding it odd that Dia would let her continue to ramble, Riko peeks through her fingers and discovers that the heiress has vanished.
“...Dia-san?”
Just as she is about to search the garden, she notices a small form slowly approaching her. Awed, she crouches down and reaches for the black rabbit. The critter’s dark pelt is cottony soft under her hands and very well-groomed, the fur almost shimmering under the sunlight. Gently, she cradles the bunny and finds herself caressing its ears.
Other than its intelligent emerald eyes, the rabbit also has white markings under the base of its ears that resemble Dia’s hairclips. Similar to how Kanan has an unusually long tail for a wolf and how Mari’s tail is whip-like as opposed to an average cat’s, those two traits separate Dia from a regular black rabbit.
Riko had expected her Animagus form to be a snake or even a jaguar, not this innocent herbivore. A rabbit simply isn’t the image of the Kurosawa heiress. However, an Animagus form doesn’t lie, for it is determined by one’s personality and inner traits. Perhaps, this is what Dia would have been like, had she grown up without all those expectations and responsibilities. She never provokes anyone or unsheathes her saber unless absolutely necessary. The only exception would be around Mari and Kanan, but Riko can tell that Dia doesn’t ever want to seriously hurt her friends.
Maybe, just maybe, Dia would rather avoid all conflicts, except circumstances forbid her from doing so. Now, holding the bunny in her arms, Riko is filled with the desire to protect it from harm. She also relishes in that sense of peace and soothing effect, similar to whenever she cuddles her pet Kneazle. Smiling, Riko couldn’t help but lightly scratch it between the ears like she would with Sandy.
The rabbit lowers its ears, seemingly pleased at the attention and treatment. Automatically, Riko leans down and nuzzles its cheek before smooching its brow. When the rabbit goes rigid in her arms, Riko snaps out of her daze and is struck by the reminder that this rabbit is Dia Kurosawa.
What did I just do?!
Mortified, she hastily places the bunny onto the grass. Almost instantly, it transforms back to the black-haired heiress, whose cheeks have darkened several shades. Both flustered into silence, they dumbly stare at each other for a while but adamant to avoid meeting each other’s eyes.
A slight rustling behind Dia breaks the stalemate, and Riko is almost relieved to spot familiar gold and dark indigo shapes fleeing into the bushes.
“Ma. Ri. San. Ka. Na. N. San! Y-You saw everything-?!” Dia summons her broom and chases after her friends without glancing back. Riko is grateful for the distraction as she crouches down again and covers her heated cheeks.
She’ll have to somehow regain her composure before the others return. But the challenge is, how is supposed to face Dia again after this? Although, it feels rather nice, to see and learn more about the older girl, so she’ll just have to somehow survive Mari’s teasing later.
Perhaps the embarrassment is too much, for she begins to giggle in mirth and is fully laughing by the time Dia returns with petrificus totalus-stricken wolf and cat levitated behind her.
Dia’s cheeks are still flushed from annoyance and the chase, but she relaxes upon seeing her and also lets out a few chuckles. The awkward atmosphere between them diffuses and they are able to return to discussing various areas of study.
Kanan and Mari are inadvertently forgotten and remained magically-petrified for a few hours. Kanan shrugs it off with a grin. Mari is not amused, and the chase between her and Dia resume.
All is well.

“So? What are your thoughts,  Mari-san?”
“Hmm? She’s a very interesting girl, and seems to have a good heart,” Mari taps her finger on her chin. “She helped out this other new student, another Muggleborn, with her luggage.”
“I see. Then, why was the entry barred from them?” Riko hasn’t even realized that she is gripping the black feather so hard until Mari gently pats her shoulder. Riko loosens her hold, noticing the crescent-shaped marks on her palm, and sighs wearily. “It can’t be a coincidence and you know it, Mari-san.”
“I agree with you on that, but there’s nothing we can do except observe,” the senior Ravenclaw’s voice is low like a feline’s growl. “We do not want to jump into any conclusions, sì?”
Riko slumps in her seat and rubs her throbbing temple. The illusion of paradise from the summer vacation is long gone. She thought she had prepared herself for anything, but the appearance of a raven-haired teenager with a feather affixed to her bun took her by surprise. She’ll have this whole train ride until they reach Hogwarts to figure out how to handle this situation.
As if to lighten up the somber atmosphere, Mari suddenly flicks Riko’s forehead, earning a yelp. “Yoshiko Tsushima reminds me of you, Rikocchi, though you were much shyer while this one has the recklessness of a Gryffindor~”
Pouting, Riko scoots away from the blonde. “You think she’d be Sorted there?”
“Hmm, it’s possible, though instincts tell me she’d get along with Dia just fine~”
As peculiar as Mari could be, her instincts have proven scarily accurate so far. Riko could offer a slight nod before sinking back into her contemplative shell. She smiles gratefully when Mari transforms and curls up on her lap, knowing that she needs the comfort.
Dia and Kanan have gone to Hogwarts in the morning, for a cursory patrol around the perimeters, as well as to prepare for her duties as Head Girl this year. No matter how much Riko requests Mari privately, the blonde is adamant in accompanying her instead of Dia. Even though Kanan is very dependable, Riko would still rather the Fifth-Years stick together so that Dia would be well-protected.
Riko knows first-hand how powerful Dia is, but there are so many things unknown about the hostiles and she just can’t help but worry. In order to distract herself, she peruses her research note and examines the black feather again. The least she and Mari could do is to keep watch over Dia’s little sister, and monitor this odd girl with the feather.
Perhaps this Yoshiko is suitable for the House of Gryffindor, since she and her two companions vanished from the train station not long after they arrive. Adventurous and daring, like how Chika and You are. Mari manages to locate them somewhere in the outskirts of the Forbidden Forest and directs them back to the Thestral-pulled carriages. Riko is certainly surprised that Yoshiko is able to see those skeletal horse-like creatures like she could.
Perhaps, the younger girl has also experienced loss akin to death?
Finding a kindred spirit in Yoshiko, Riko could feel her opinion towards her lighten a bit. It’s highly probable that the Muggleborn has no idea that her feather is a Dark object. After she welcomes the trio inside of Hogwarts, she then switches her attention to Ruby and Dia. The older Kurosawa, expectedly, pays her sister no heed while the latter glances nervously in her direction every now and then. Riko mentally makes a reminder to prod Kanan for details of their patrol earlier, since Dia appears to be troubled by something.
“Oh my, the plot thickens doesn’t it?” Mari’s light-hearted words belie her worried tone as the Sorting Hat announces its decision. The two Ravenclaws watch Ruby anxiously approach the Hufflepuff table with her head held high. Riko glances at Dia, only to find her expression as placid as ever.
When it is Yoshiko’s turn, she waves at Riko, who returns the gesture with mild confusion. Surely, such a cheerful, optimistic person belongs to Gryffindor?
Again, she is taken aback by the Sorting Hat’s instantaneous decision to place the Muggleborn in the House of Slytherin, which consists of only Purebloods. Riko hears that there have been Muggleborn Slytherins in the past few decades, such as their feisty Charms Professor, but they have Pureblood ancestry traced back centuries ago. Maybe Yoshiko has a similar background as well?
The rest of the Sorting and Welcome Feast continue on without a hitch. Riko’s mind is rather weary from all the events so far, so she couldn’t wait to fulfill her Prefect duties for the night and retire to the Room of Requirement to convene with the others.
To her surprise, she only sees Kanan by the time she enters the Room around midnight. The ponytailed Gryffindor is in the middle of muffling a yawn and is sprawled on the floor, most likely having just changed back to her human form. Chuckling sheepishly, she stands up and elaborates when she notices Riko’s questioning glance.
“Ah, Mari said she’s escorting Hanamaru - that’s Ruby’s friend, the brunette with the glasses - back to Hufflepuff, while Dia’s taking Yoshiko back to the Slytherin Dorms. They found the two girls wandering around the corridor near the grand staircase.”
“Eh? How did they manage to do that without other Prefects noticing…” Riko frowns, also berating herself for not being diligent enough in her rounds, even though she was assigned to a different area.
“These girls are promising~” Kanan’s grin is rather childish, her mischievous Gryffindor side surfacing whenever she’s tired. “Seems like it’ll be an eventful school year too, especially with the way it started already.”
There’s something in Kanan’s tone that Riko doesn’t like. Upon interrogation, the older girl reluctantly reveals that she and Dia were attacked by those hooded figures in the Forest earlier. Alarmed, she pleads for Kanan to return to the Gryffindor Tower to make sure that Chika and You are alright. While those mysterious attackers haven’t come near the duo since that time, Riko refuses to leave it up to chance.
Now the only person left in the Room, Riko busies herself by placing a quarantine spell on the black feather near the rest they had gathered over the past year. She feels slightly foolish for staying, since it’s well past midnight already so she should just go back to the Ravenclaw Tower to rest.
Much to her joy, hours later, the door opens to reveal a very tired Dia.
“Riko-san? What are you doing here? You should be in your Dorm, resting.”
“So should you, Dia-san,” Riko feels the tension in her body finally lifting. She hasn’t spoken to Dia the whole day and that’s been gnawing at the corner of her mind. “Kanan-san informed me that you escorted Tsushima-san back to the Slytherin Dorm. You should have stayed there instead of coming here.”
“I… feel too restless. Also,” Dia sinks down in one of the couches and rubs the bridge of her nose, a habitual gesture whenever she’s abashed. “I suppose I just wanted to see if you would be here, even though it is so late.”
Something warm flutters in Riko’s heart as she gingerly sits down beside the older girl. “...I was waiting to see if you’d come here as well, Dia-san.”
“Is that so? We are both rather foolish, are we not?” Dia’s lips quirk in amusement. “Well then, since we are both here… Mari-san said that the two of you found another feather?”
“Yes, and I’d like you to tell me more about the encounter Kanan-san mentioned…”
Perhaps it is the familiar atmosphere in the Room of Requirement, for any vestige of fatigue fades away as the two witches exchange stories and catch up. It’s comfortable, therapeutic even, and all that unease about the attackers’ reappearance and the mysterious feather is soothed by Dia’s presence so close by.
Sensing there’s something else bothering the older girl, Riko gathers her courage and asks about Ruby.
“... I am pleased that she is Sorted into Hufflepuff, not Slytherin. She would excel there, and she appears to be making friends fast, especially in Kunikida-san and Tsushima-san. According to Mari-san, the three of them are already protective of one another,” Dia says slowly, though a minute tremor reveals her hidden emotion.
“But-?” Riko coaxes gently, and Dia’s poised expression starts to crack.
“But apparently, my family had sent Ruby a Howler and humiliated her in front of all her Housemates. Professor Koizumi managed to intervene before the full message was delivered, but…” Dia slouches in her seat, her fingers interlaced as she rests her chin on them. “If only I could go and comfort her. What kind of sister am I, for letting her suffer like this?”
“Dia-san-”
“Now that we are far away from our family’s scrutiny, here at Hogwarts, I thought that perhaps I could carefully, secretively, amend our relationship. However, now that it’s confirmed that those accursed attackers want the Kurosawa blood, I cannot have Ruby come anywhere near me. I will not subject my little sister to such menace!”
The pain in Dia’s voice hurts Riko too. She timidly reaches out and covers Dia’s hand with her own. Dia responds by giving her a heartrending smile and whimsically strokes the back of Riko’s hand with her thumb.
“The least I can do is to stop my family from harassing Ruby. Hmm, she has always been fond of my owl, I can certainly acquire one for her. Perhaps a tawny owl that likes flowers… do you think she would like that?”
Riko nods with certainty, feeling helpless when she notices Dia’s eyes shimmer with tears.
“As awful and untrue as it is, they will consider her a… lost cause now that she is in Hufflepuff. All that unnecessary pressure shall be gone, so she could finally enjoy herself. She… she is free.”
Before the first tear even trickle down Dia’s cheek, Riko pulls her into her arms. Dia doesn’t struggle and simply rests her head against Riko’s shoulder, her body trembling in soundless sobs.
Is there nothing she could do to help Dia? It must be terribly stressful to maintain that indomitable facade. Dia is just human. There must be times she simply wants to crumble and let go of her emotions.
I will be her refuge.
Riko tightens her hug.

“Lily! Look look, it’s eating the apple! Eck-?!”
Riko giggles when the Thestral nudges Yoshiko affectionately, almost knocking her over in the process. The younger girl harrumphs and tries to scold the creature, but it’s obvious how she enjoys the attention.
Thestrals have ominous reputation and scary appearances. Riko herself was intimidated when she first saw them but now, they are possibly one of the most endearing magical creatures she has ever known. They seem to understand one’s sorrow and bring out the hidden joy.
Yoshiko certainly seems to appreciate that. The young Slytherin indeed reminds Riko a lot of herself, especially seeing her with Hanamaru and Ruby. Such nostalgia had prompted her to view the Mirror of Erised again, but that momentary lapse had caused Dia to hug her so the incident was overall pleasant.
Other than her accidental discovery, Yoshiko hasn’t been able to locate the Room of Requirement again, much to Riko’s relief. After getting to know the girl more and more, Riko wishes to protect that innocent quality as best as she could. The way she is so fascinated by magic and her eagerness to learn make their tutor sessions enjoyable. In fact, it’s almost comparable to her own sessions with Dia, and so the sense of kindred spirit just grows stronger and stronger.
“Hnff, stop laughing and come help me, Lily!” Three Thestrals are nuzzling Yoshiko, having long lost interest in the apple in her hand. These creatures prefer raw meat after all, so accepting a fruit from her already speaks volumes of how they adore her.
“Yocchan is popular,” Riko muffles another mirthful chuckle before distracting the Thestrals. Or, perhaps, these intelligent creatures could sense that Yoshiko is a good girl.
Truthfully, when Yoshiko first called her Lily, such sensitive nickname almost tore down her composure. Yet, as time goes on, Riko finds the process rather healing. While she will always have mixed feelings about the time spent with the quill, at least she can now look back at the happier times without that sting of guilt.
After all, how could she possibly associate this happily grinning girl with that wretched quill?
She isn’t the only one growing fond of Yoshiko and the other two First-Years. Chika and You enjoy playing with the volatile Slytherin while showering Ruby with love, something that Dia both appreciates and is rather envious of. Kanan has certainly taken Hanamaru under her wing since they are often found napping together by the Black Lake.
And Riko would never admit it, but Mari’s newfound ‘toy’ in Yoshiko makes Riko miss the older Ravenclaw’s irritating teases. Just slightly.
While those blank states of mind that Yoshiko experiences perturb her, they have been harmless so far, as inexplicable as they are. Dia’s temporary solution of Charming the girl’s scarf works, and nothing out of the ordinary has happened since the first day of school, making the term so far peaceful as they develop their bond with the three endearing First-Years.
Riko regrets allowing her guard to drop.
She is completely unprepared when, weeks later, she is forced to reveal her past and induct Yoshiko and Hanamaru into the Unbreakable Vow. Those tendrils of magic, something so Dark and corrupted, should not have originated from someone as guileless as Yoshiko. Moreover, those tendrils share the same properties as those feathers, which Riko has tentatively considered as Horcruxes even though they are not the same.
How had everything spiraled out of control so easily? Then again, nothing was ever within her control in the first place.
Riko tries to suppress her nervous jitters as she glances at the door out of the corner of her eyes. The sight of Kanan’s arm in a sling makes her stomach churn, and Mari’s stoney expression sends shivers down her spine. Even then, the two seniors maintain their friendly demeanor as they chat with the three First-Years. In spite of everything she’s learned, Yoshiko still remain positive and appears to take everything in a stride. Her selfless offer to help as much as possible touches Riko, strengthening her desire to protect her
After Dia bids the trio good night, Kanan and Mari open the door and lead the younger girls away, most likely to escort them back to their respective Dorms. For the first time ever, Riko is reluctant to be left alone with Dia.
As soon as the older girl turns towards her, she blurts out. “I’m so sorry, Dia-san. I know you wanted to keep Ruby-chan out of this-”
Dia stops her with a severe tone. “And I still do, but Yoshiko-san is correct. It would be awful if Ruby is kept out of the loop, seeing how close she is with Hanamaru-san and Yoshiko-san. It would be fine if we do not reveal everything and simply concentrate on training her. And, admittedly…” She lowers her head as if sheepish. “In a way, I appreciate this opportunity for me to reconnect with her again. She does not seem to bear any ill feelings towards me, and I am grateful.”
“Y-You’re not upset… about what happened?”
“Of course not, I was merely taken by surprise. There was no way we could have foreseen this, so it is prudent that we make the most of it and prepare ourselves should another similar incident occurs.”
Riko sighs shakily, the trepidation falling away along with her composure. Before she realizes it, Dia has closed their distances in several strides and enveloped her within her arms.
“Silly. Rather than me, I am more concerned about you, having to recount details of that day again,” Dia murmurs against Riko’s hair as she caresses her back. “How are you feeling?”
Riko clings back with everything she has and, strangely, she does not feel the urge to cry now even though sobs were bubbling in her chest earlier. “I-I’ve calmed down, now that I have time to ponder about it. I just wish all of this could’ve been avoidable. They were just First-Years!”
She tries to keep self-loathing and pity at bay, she really does, but telling Yoshiko her past with the quill and of Chika and You leaves a bitter taste in her mouth. She vows to never let Yoshiko experience the same despair.
Dia pulls away a bit. “Look at me.”
Riko shakes her head, feeling a familiar sting in her eyes even though they feel dry.
“Look at me, please.”
Timidly, she blinks several times and peers up. Dia’s gaze is so gentle that Riko does feel an urge to cry.
“Things will get better. We are all on your side. Do you understand me?”
She nods weakly.
“Good. Now, please go get some rest, I just have some errands to finish-.”
Such a familiar argument brings a small smile to her face. “Again, I should say the same. Let me help you, Dia-san.”
“Riko-san.”
“Dia-san.”
They stare at each other, neither willing to relent. Riko says quietly. “Like you said, you are not alone either. I… I’m here too. I want to be of help to you.”
Dia exhales and appears to be conflicted about something. “... you already have.”
Riko is stunned when the taller girl leans in and places a soft kiss against her forehead. The simple contact causes warmth to fill her chest and her smile widens. Coyly, she burrows her face against the crook of Dia’s neck and indulges herself in this moment of contentedness.
Dia is right. While they don’t know what would happen in the future, she is confident that, with Dia by her side, things will turn out fine at the end. It has long developed from gratitude to trust and fondness, and as impossible as it may be, this almost-overwhelming feeling just continues to grow.
Dia-san, I lo-
Riko dares not allow her mind to complete such thought.

Amber eyes stare dazedly at the ceiling, sleep escaping her like usual but it is for a different reason this night. Riko could still feel the phantom brush of Dia’s lips against her knuckles and her cheek, her mind whirling with memories of the Christmas Banquet earlier.
Dia has only kissed her a total of two times, a chivalrous one on her knuckles after their dance, and another chaste one on her cheek when Dia escorted her back to her Dorm.
Yet, each kiss felt so achingly intimate, so tender that she feels like melting. And the way Dia gazed at her, like she was the only person in the world, her whole world...
Riko’s cheeks heat up as she rolls over in her bed. Never in her seventeen years of life has she had the urge to giggle like a hopelessly smitten girl, but after tonight, she has resigned and accepted how she feels about Dia. Dia seems to return her feelings too, since she is the only person the heiress has danced with the whole night. Riko doesn’t want to get her hopes up, but wishful thinking keeps pervading her thoughts whenever she tries to ponder about safer topics like school assignments and whatnot.
As if entranced, she kisses her own knuckles softly, the same spot that Dia did. Her blush darkens again and she hastily buries her face in her pillow.
A quiet yowl reminds her that she isn’t totally alone in the Prefect dorm. Sandy must have been roused by her restless movements, and she could feel the Kneazle hopping onto her bed and pawing at her shoulder as if worried.
Peeking out, Riko is about to hug her pet when she notices Sandy nudging a hairclip towards her. The sakura flower pin was given by Dia before they parted ways, as a Christmas present.
Maybe she is imagining things, but the intelligent Kneazle seems to be smirking at her.
“Y-You hang out with Mari-san too much!” Mortified, Riko pulls the cover over her head but is still unsuccessful in falling asleep, especially since Sandy keeps purring in amusement.
The few days after the Banquet is like a breather, since most students have gone home for the holidays and they have all returned to routine meetings and training in the Room of Requirement. Both she and Dia are quite occupied by their respective self-assigned tasks, so she is able to regain composure to a certain extent and interact with the heiress as normally as possible.
So far, Mari is surprisingly quiet on the matter, but judging from Dia’s flustered reactions, she must be teasing her friend whenever Riko is out of hearing range. Kanan has been wearing a perpetual smile, one that seems to say ‘I’m happy for you’ whenever she looks at Riko’s direction. Even Chika and You give her a similar expression, making Riko very self-conscious.
Her embarrassment grows when Yoshiko catches her staring at Dia, and skyrockets after she casts the Patronus Charm. Riko is beyond shocked, for while she’s acknowledged her feeling, she has no idea how deeply it runs, enough to actually change her Patronus form to a rabbit. The worst part is that everyone saw it, especially Dia.
Which brings her to her current predicament.
“Riko-san…? Are you alright?”
She squirms shyly, her heart speeding up when Dia reaches for her hand. She appreciates Kanan and Mari making them go to Madame Puddifoot’s at Hogsmeade, but she has absolutely no idea what to do now that she’s alone with Dia. The fluffy atmosphere around the tea shop, which is filled with other couples, certainly doesn’t calm her nerves.
“Apologies for Mari-san and Kanan-san’s behavior. Would you like to go somewhere else?”
Taking a deep breath, Riko dares to look up and is surprised to see Dia just as nervous as she is. Suddenly, a wave of calmness washes over her and Riko squeezes their intertwined hands.
“Let’s enjoy the dessert here first, Dia-san. I hear that they serve good matcha pudding?”
Dia sheepishly averts her gaze, making Riko giggle in fondness. While she finds the tea shop’s interior designs tacky and small tables uncomfortable, she admits that the dessert is quite delicious.
Or is it because she is in Dia’s company?
Riko smiles to herself as the pair exits the shop, hand in hand. Just as Dia said, everything did get better, and there have been no irregularities they couldn’t control, and no attacks. Chika and You have returned back to her life, and it feels so fulfilling to be surrounded by new and old friends.
“Is there any place you would like to go, Riko-san?”
An idea enters her mind then. It has been over a year, so she feels ready to confront the last demon of her past. “I’ve been foolish in avoiding it, Dia-san. There could be valuable items inside the Hut that we could learn from.”
Dia narrows her eyes and nods slowly while pulling Riko close. The younger girl appreciates the comforting gesture as she leads her towards the outskirts of Hogsmeade while quietly explaining the nature behind the Hut.
The abandoned building is even shabbier than the Shack a distance away, at least outwardly, and it is located deeply in the forest. What makes the Hut special is that it cannot be found by means other than through a Secret-Keeper.
“You have casted the Fidelius Charm-?”
Riko could understand why Dia is awed. It is a highly complex spell that no average student could have possibly cast it correctly. Alas, back then, she has the help of the quill and that is how the Hut remains undiscovered through this past year.
“Technically, Chika-chan and You-chan are still Secret-Keepers like I am, but since they don’t remember, they would not be able to pass on the secret,” Riko flicks her wand around the forest, checking one last time to confirm that she and Dia are the only people here. She then describes the Hut’s exact location to Dia and smiles faintly when the older girl blinks at the building, which must have materialized abruptly for her only after hearing the address.
“...are you sure, Riko-san?”
“Yes. I’m done running away. I should’ve done this earlier, but I admit that I haven’t even thought of this place for a long time.” Even as she says that, her heart pounds painfully within her chest. Remnants of terror persist in spite of her bravado.
After all, it isn’t that far from the Hut, the very campsite where they were ambushed and she was forced to Obliviate Chika and You.
But it’s also where she was found by Dia and the others.
An end, but also a beginning.
The heiress squeezes her hand again before they enter the Hut together. The place hasn’t changed at all, still mostly immaculate without any hint of dust. The arrangement of furniture remains the same as she remembers, with two overturned stools at the corner of the living room and a long table separating it from the kitchenette. Chika and You used the stools as pseudo goalposts when they played soccer in the magically enlarged area. The ball is tucked onto the wooden legs, which was placed there after Riko had tripped over it one time and Hexed the two to clean up their mess.
Riko’s breathing hitches as memories, some vague and some vivid, fill her mind in an unstoppable torrent. She might have collapsed onto her knees if Dia hasn’t held her steady.
“Riko-san, perhaps we should-”
“No, I’m okay, really,” Riko smiles weakly and gestures at the stairway leading to the basement. “That’s where we did most of our experiments and training. All the books should still be there, cauldrons and probably some leftover ingredients too.”
Dia nods, but makes no move to follow Riko. “Dia-san?”
“Should you really be showing me all of this?”
Puzzled, Riko turns to face her. “I’m not sure I understand what you mean.”
“All of this… This is something very personal. I am honored that you would consider me trustworthy enough, Riko-san, but…”
A flicker of fond exasperation tickles at her heart, lifting the somber atmosphere enough for Riko to speak with certainty. “After everything we’ve experienced, Dia-san, that’s a rather silly question. Do you have any idea how much you’ve done for me? I was able to stand on my feet again. I was able to… open my mind to new possibilities and people into my life. Thanks to you, I-I…” She trails off and swallows hard, her confidence wavering but her words sincere. “I’m able to remember how to truly smile again.”
For some reason, Dia begins to chuckle.
Rather miffed by the response, Riko pouts and waits for the older girl to elaborate.
“Do not fret, Riko-san, I am just laughing at myself, at my own indecisiveness and cowardice.”
“Eh?”
“If you can face your own demons, then I shall be brave as well and do something I have wanted to for a long time now.”
Under Riko’s inquisitive eyes, Dia gingerly retrieves a small velvety box from her pocket. “Rather than the hairclip, I had meant for this to be your Christmas present, to give to you after our dance, but I… well, I chickened out, for a lack of better description. I felt uncertain about many things, and admittedly I was fearful of ruining what we have. I do not want to lose that.”
Riko’s distinctly aware of her heart thundering in her ears when she notices the Kurosawa crest on the box.
“I should have acted sooner. If it were not for your Patronus, I might have continued to hesitate. But now here we are, there is no reason for me to hold back anymore.”
The box is carefully opened, revealing a necklace with a carbonado as its center jewel. Riko’s lips tremble as she struggles to speak. “I-I cannot accept something so valuable-”
“Yes you can. I would like you to have it, Riko-san.” The earlier indecision have faded away as Dia assertively takes one step forward. “Indeed, this is a precious gem, but that is not all that it represents. My name is Dia Kurosawa, and this is a black diamond. In other words, it represents me. My magic is imbued in the jewel so that, if it ever comes to a situation when you need help, it will protect you.”
She glances between Dia and the necklace, a lump forming in her throat as she tries to understand the magnitude of such exchange. “...why me?”
Dia’s smile softens as she holds Riko’s gaze and repeats the same words she herself had told Dia earlier. “That is a rather silly question, considering everything we had gone through together. You have become very dear to me, Riko-san. I...”
Riko feels a familiar warmth and sting at her eyes, and the dam breaks upon the heiress’ next words.
“I have fallen in love with you.”
Biting her lips, Riko lowers her head and presses her palms against her eyes as hot tears continue to flow.
“It is not my intention to make you cry at all, Riko-san…”
Hearing the concern and smidgen of doubt in Dia’s voice, Riko frantically shakes her head and tries to reign in her sobs. “I-I’m just… so… so very happy… Dia-san, I-I…a-accept it...”
“I am glad,” Dia whispers. “Allow me then.”
With her eyesight still blurred by tears, she could only sense Dia moving behind her and gently brushing apart her hair. Her cool fingers graze along her nape as she carefully clasps the beautiful necklace around her neck. The weight of the jewel rests just below her collarbones and above her heart. She could intimately feel Dia’s magic thrumming against her own.
Most of all, she could feel Dia’s love embracing her protectively.
After wiping her eyes one last time, Riko turns around and demurely smiles up at Dia. She doesn’t know who leans in first, but the kiss feels so right, as if a missing part of her is finally complete.
Is it possible to be this blissful?
“Dia-san, I love you.”

Again, I know the point of these things is to wait for followers to Ask questions from the list, but reading though this one got me thinking too much. About all of my flagships. And I wanted to answer all of the questions. And not wait for a handful to maybe be asked.
Anyway, credit again goes to @lonelypond​ for this version coming across my dash. Reblog that version if you want to do this thing correctly.
Also, just because I’ve already answered these here, I’ve expanded on some for various reasons and left others short if I believe the reasons are obvious. So if you still want to do the whole interactive thing, you can still ask for clarification or whatever.
And finally, there will be spoilers ahead for Happy Life, and to a lesser degree the AU, both for scenes I’ve written and posted, as well as some that remain in my Notes and WIP Warehouse. I’ll try to remember to link to the chapters mentioned.
1. Who wakes up first?
Riko. Yohane is very much not a morning person, especially after a late night of streaming.
2. Who wants to stay in bed just a little longer?
Yohane. See above. However, if she doesn’t have time commitments for the day, Riko may occasionally want to stay in bed for some activities other than sleeping.
3. Who takes longer getting ready?
Either, though they are fond of getting ready together and helping one another, so in these cases, they’re done at the same time.
4. When they can’t sleep, what do they do?
Yohane has many rituals for inducing sleep involving all manner of meditation, incense, herbal tea, topical rubs, nightmare wards and more. Whether or not they work is up to debate, but Riko is comforted by the sentiment, as portrayed in Dream Warden. Yohane herself takes comfort from being near those she loves, particularly Riko, while she sleeps.
5. Who falls asleep while watching a movie?
Yohane, though it depends on the type of movie.
6. Who falls asleep last, watching the other with a small affectionate smile?
More often Riko, though Yohane does enjoy watching a sleeping Riko from time to time.
7. Who comes up with the cheesy pick-up lines?
Yohane. 100% Yohane. And she is well aware of how cheesy they are. And she knows how much Riko loves them.
8. Who gets extremely competitive playing Mario Kart?
Yohane gets competitive over games in general.
9. Who accidentally pushes a door instead of pulling?
Yohane is more likely to do so, though Riko can be absentminded on occasion.
10. Who sets the other’s ringtone to something loud and obnoxious behind their back?
Yohane.
11. Who rearranges the bookshelf/DVD shelf in alphabetical order?
Both have their reasons for their particularness in displaying their shelving; Riko likes to be able to quickly locate her favorite doujin while Yohane is considerate of the background for her ritual streams.
12. Who does the hands-over-the-eyes “Guess Who” thing?
Yohane. With as many different attempts at different voices and accents as she can.
13. Who points out a dog when they see one?
Early on, both, though for different reasons; Yohane out of excitement and Riko out of fear. Later, Yohane retains her excitement while Riko becomes more lax in her reactions.
14. Who’s prone to road rage?
Yohane.
15. Who’s prone to wearing socks indoor (or to sleep)?
Either
16. Who reminds the other to put on sunscreen before going to the beach (or pool)?
Yohane knows she burns easily and is pretty good at remembering, though Riko is mindful that her girlfriend can be careless at times.
17. Who carries all the important documents while traveling?
Riko.
18. Who gets the window seat?
Probably Yohane. Likely accompanied by some statement about missing being able to fly under her own power.
19. Who puts their cold hands/feet on the other?
Yohane.
20. What do they argue about the most?
Early after moving in together, Yohane had a bad habit of bringing home stray pets, despite it being against the policy of the apartment complex, as depicted in Hibagon. These arguments subsided once the policy was changed, as depicted in Phobetor.
21. Who’s clumsier?
Yohane, though Riko certainly has her moments.
22. Who texts more often?
Yohane.
23. Who is better with kids?
Yohane is better at keeping kids entertained with her antics while Riko is better at tending to their care, be it feeding them, calming them down when they’re upset or applying first aid; Yohane is pretty good with first aid as well, having had far too much practice on herself.
24. Who’s the better cook?
Debatable. As I mentioned in the Notes for A Roost for Weary Wings, Yohane is capable of producing higher quality results, but also fails more spectacularly. Riko may lack the skills and confidence to produce highly extravagant meals, but she is far more consistent in producing edible food.
25. Who mistakes salt for sugar?
Riko. Despite what one may assume from my prior answer. Yohane will still eat it, not only because she has a strange sense of taste, but also because her beloved Riri made it for her and she will be damned before letting it go to waste.
26. Who puts the fork in the microwave?
Possibly Yohane.
27. Who cooks at 2 in the morning?
Yohane.
28. Who lets the microwave play the loud beeping sound at 1 a.m.?
Definitely Yohane.
29. Who licks the spoon when they’re baking brownies?
Yohane. She’ll even bring her own spoon, as depicted in Valentine’s Taste Test.
30. Who likes doing the dishes?
Riko doesn’t mind it. Yohane dislikes it but is willing to balance the workload after Riko cooked.
31. Who has bigger cravings? What are they?
For food, especially exotic or exceptionally spicy food? Yohane. Although she does have a bit of a sweet tooth, as her favorites would imply. For enacting scenes from her favorite doujinshi with her girlfriend? Riko.
32. Who remembers what the other one always orders at a restaurant?
Both, though for slightly different reasons. Riko believes it is romantic to know certain things about one’s partner. Yohane believes it is the duty of a fallen angel to know such things about their little demons… or fellow angels?
33. How do they eat ice cream? What’s their favorite flavors?
Yohane will often eat too fast and give herself a headache. Her favorite flavors are those of her favorite foods, chocolate and strawberry. Riko eats slower, more often out of a sundae dish than a cone, in part because a dish is better for eating at her pace, but also because it’s easier for Yohane to “steal” a bite or two. She enjoys Yohane’s favorites, but is also fond of mint and vanilla.
34. Do they go on dates? What are they like?
Absolutely. Riko prefers going to museums or orchestra performances, though she has dragged Yohane to several doujin stores over the years. Yohane prefers higher energy environments like amusement parks, though she has dragged Riko to several gothic Lolita clothing stores and occult shops over the years. Both girls look forward to events like Comiket.
35. What do they smell when they smell Amortentia?
Riko smells the slightly sulfuric scent of boiling eggs her parents made often while she was growing up, the clean, salty air of Uchiura, and a spicy, sweet and earthy scent to which she cannot match a specific memory. Yohane smells sweet black lilies, the lingering smoke from a myriad of incense that always permeates occult shops, and a spicy, sweet and earthy scent to which she cannot match a specific memory.
The last scent for both is an idea I had while Googling random stuff for this question. It’s basically how one website describe the smell of Dragon’s Blood resin when burned as incense. I want to bring it up in a scene or two in both HL and HL(AU), though there will be a difference between the kinds found here on Earth and up in Heaven, which may end up as a minor connecting plot point.
I realize this leaves Riko without something that she knows is directly related to Yohane, but I was trying to avoid using incense too much, as it already had three entries between them. Also, it technically is related to Yohane, she just doesn’t realize it right away. I’m hoping whatever I write someday will make that connection for her. Not that she’ll ever smell Amortentia in HL, but…
36. Which one is the secret snuggler?
It’s no secret that Yohane loves her snuggles. Riko is quieter about her desires, but can be quite insistent, nonetheless.
37. Which one offers their jacket to the other when they complain they feel cold?
Riko. Yohane is far more vocal about her discomfort, especially when it comes to temperature.
38. Who reaches for the other one’s hand while driving?
Riko is more likely to do so, though Yohane might as well. That said, I don’t believe I have them owning a vehicle in HL, so this probably won’t come into play anytime soon in my works.
39. Who leaves little notes in the other one’s lunch?
Riko, as the more consistent cook of the pair, she is more likely to make their lunch bentos for the day. (Bonus: What does it say?) Casual reminders of her love for her Yocchan.
40. Who is the most affectionate?
Both are quite affectionate, though Yohane is far more likely to initiate, especially in public though even in private.
41. Who is the big spoon/little spoon?
Riko is most often the big spoon. Though Yohane might try to have one believe elsewise.
42. What is their favorite feature of their partner?
Riko loves Yohane’s smile when she is passionate about something, be it her streams or games or whatever. Yohane loves the way Riko’s fingers dance across the keyboard.
43. What is the first thing that changes when they realize they have feelings for the other?
Yohane becomes increasingly aware of Riko’s behavior and attitude toward Chika and has to make a conscious effort to avoid holding anything against the idol group’s leader; she likes Chika as a friend, after all, and is thankful that she brought her into the group in the first place. Riko starts to include Yohane in her fantasies.
44. What are their nicknames for each other?
Yocchan and Riri
45. Who worries the most? Over what?
Riko is constantly concerned that Yohane’s abysmal luck will eventually cause her actual harm, as in more than just catching a cold or getting a scrape or small cut. Yohane also fears that her abysmal luck will adversely affect Riko.
46. Who initiates kisses?
Yohane all the time, in public and in private. Riko, in private.
47. Who says I love you first? How did it happen?
Yohane said it first in Revelations.
48. Who tells their friends/family about their relationship first?
That’s actually a good question. I haven’t decided yet for this ship. I mean I have plans for revealing that the blonde Mari knows, but as for the couple actually telling people… hrm… Off the top of my head, I’d be more likely to say Yohane.
49. What do they do when they’re away from each other?
Both are quite capable of entertaining themselves without the other. Riko can play the piano and Yohane can play her games until their fingers cramp if they are not actively doing something together. And they have Phobetor and Prelude to pet and take on walks and play with. It’s not until bedtime that they become more aware of the other’s absence.
50. Who gets overwhelmed by small acts of kindness?
Depends. Yohane is more the emotional rollercoaster and could easily be overwhelmed by kindness from the girl for whom she held a one-sided crush for far too long. Riko is also likely to moved, though more through something that fits into some trope she loves in her doujin; good thing Yohane can be quite genre-savvy when she wants.

“Riri! Riri!” Yoshiko cried, bursting into the room. “Look! Nozomi gave me a bunch of magic stuff!” She held up a box.
Riko looked up from her doujin and smiled at her girlfriend. “That sounds fun.” She said, though she still hadn’t quite figured out Yoshiko’s obsession with mundane mortal magic, which relied more on slight-of-hand and misdirection than actual supernatural power.
At least that was her initial thought. Upon closer inspection, she noticed no shortage of auras emanating from the box and realized she should have expected as such, given the benefactor. Now her interest was piqued. She climbed off her bed and knelt on the floor next to Yoshiko.
“Anima Commutationem?” Yoshiko held up a strange trinket.
“Soul?” Riko reached for the piece. “Do you think it gives…”
“I think it swap… eh?” Yoshiko’s voice changed.
No, not just voice… Riko blinked. Why was she staring at herself?
“Riri?” her reflection asked. “Did we just…?”
“I think so?”
Riko summoned her wings. But instead of leathery demon wings, out came majestic black feathered ones. Yocchan’s wings… She pulled them in around herself, as her girlfriend had done many times when holding her close. She caressed the appendages lovingly, as she…
Eh? A delightful sensation shivered down her spine. Was this what Yoshiko felt when Riko did this? It was different than what Riko felt when Yoshiko did the same to her wings. Very different.
For Riko, her wings were merely another part of her, a part she wasn’t particularly fond of, if she was being honest. She couldn’t help feeling anxious that others would fear her wings, and she was eternally grateful that the friends she had made at the theater not only didn’t fear them, but many thought they were beautiful. And Kotori and Yoshiko had even found a practical use for them, turning clippings from them into amazing leather works for the costumes they designed.
But Yoshiko’s wings… They were, for lack of better words, nothing short of angelic. She had admired them for quite a while, but now, with this new knowledge…
Riko stroked her wings again, reveling in the sensation.
“Riri~!” Riko’s voice whined. “You can’t make that sound when doing that!”
Oh gods…
Riko’s eyes snapped open, seeing her own face burning with a blush that spread from her ears and down her neck. Something twisted within her. Geez, was it wrong to be turned on by recognizing expressive features of her girlfriend portrayed through her own body? The lingering sensations from her winged ministrations probably weren’t helping.
“Yocchan…” Riko breathed, hearing Yoshiko’s voice coming from her mouth.
She couldn’t help it. She needed to feel more. She reached forward.
“Riri, what are you…?”
Riko pulled Yoshiko’s hand, her hand… or whatever, to touch her wings, Yoshiko’s wings… or whatever.
“Yocchan…” She moaned before pushing forward to kiss her girlfriend.

“So, do you think switching back will be as easy as the initial swap?” Riko asked as she and Yoshiko lay next to each other on her bed.
“Maybe?” Yoshiko shrugged. “Uhm, let me get the thing…”
As Riko watched her body climb out of bed, she tried to recall how long they had been swapped. However, her sense of time had been lost to the thrills of… however many times she and Yoshiko had… done all that. She felt her, Yoshiko’s, face flush. Geez… another embarrassing kink…
“How did we do it the first time?” Yoshiko asked, laying beside her again.
“I think it was…” Riko touched the device “just saying swap?”

Author’s Note Continued: My first thought upon seeing this prompt was “what if the couple, or trio, was intimate while they were swapped and at least one of the found it to be their new kink?” And who better for potentially embarrassing kinks than Riko?
I still ended up writing the Nozo & Nico entry first, as I got stuck with this one and that one ended up coming easier. Still, I’m happy with how they both turned out. Even with all that I cut from both.

“I’m home!” Riko announced as she walked in the door.
“Taste the minty wrath of Santahane’s Candy Scythe!”
Riko chucked to herself as she realized Yoshiko was already lost to the world as she focused on the game she was playing. Then, a grey dog and a black cat scampered around the corner into the entryway.
“Hey, Prelude, Phobetor.” She knelt to greet the pets of the apartment, offering both scratches behind the ears and under their chins.
After a minute or two, Riko took off her coat and boots and stored them before making her way to the living room. It came as no surprised that those watching the stream noticed her presence before Yoshiko.
“Uwah!” Yoshiko seemed to notice her girlfriend’s name being spammed in chat and glanced at Riko. “Hey, Riri! I’m almost do- Ha! Ring out! Fall into winter’s abyss! Santahane shall rain coal down after you for your naughtiness!” Her final taunt issued, she tossed her controller onto the cushion beside her and popped up off the couch. “Welcome home!” She spread her arms wide.
By the gods, she looks cute, Riko thought to herself as she fought down her embarrassment and stepped forward into her girlfriend’s waiting arms.
Yoshiko had apparently found an old outfit from one of their Christmas themed photoshoots back during their time with Aqours. Or perhaps she had made a new one in a similar style, Riko couldn’t quite tell. Either way, the bells and beads and poinsettias and cape and tiny hat, all in Christmas colors, suited Yoshiko well. And the tousled twin tail hairstyle was a pleasant change from her normal side bun.
It was all so adorable, Riko couldn’t help herself when she pulled back from the embrace just enough so she could reposition her head and lean down for a kiss. She tried to ignore the surge of notification sounds as cheers and subscriptions flooded in from the still-live stream.
Finally, Riko pulled away and turned toward the camera. “Hi, everyone!” She greeted cheerfully, hoping her blush was being kept to a minimum, though realizing it probably was not. “I know you’re all enjoying Yocchan’s bonus stream today, but I’m going to need to steal her back in a little while so we can decorate for the holiday.” She smiled as she skimmed some of the responses. “Hrm, we’ll see. I’m still not that good at fighting games, but perhaps I will join Yocchan next time. Maybe.” She turned to Yoshiko. “I’m going to go make dinner, so you have until then to keep playing.”
“Right!” Yoshiko grinned before pouncing back onto the couch and grabbing her controller. “Alright, who among you is willing to face Santahane to claim their place on the Nice list?”
Riko also smiled as she made her way to the kitchen. Over the years, she had become quite fond of listening to Yoshiko’s streams and occasionally even participating in them. But it hadn’t always been like that. The younger girl’s energy had, still to this day, the potential to overwhelm the more reserved older girl, but time and time again, Riko found herself drawn in by the enthusiasm. The smiles, the laughter, even the melodramatic antics. Riko had come to love it all.
“You can’t stop my Jingle Bell attack!”
Haughty laugher burst out from the living room as Riko assuming another little demon was felled at the hands of the skilled fallen angel. Yoshiko was obviously enjoying herself, which in turn was what Riko enjoyed watching, or listening to in this case.
“Yocchan!” Riko called. “Dinner is ready. Come help me set the table.”
“The time has come, little demons.” Yoshiko announced to her viewers. “Yohane must bid thee adieu, for now. But fret not! Thy master shall soon return! Pay heed to thy standard digital messenger systems so that thou might participate in our next gathering from across the void.”
A moment later, the blue-haired girl practically skipped into the kitchen, her cape flowing behind her and twin tails bouncing over her shoulders.
“Thanks for making dinner!” Yoshiko said, sliding in to set a shameless kiss on Riko’s cheek before gliding away to grab plates from the cupboard. Silverware and napkins were nabbed next and the winter holiday wrapped whirlwind spun out to the living room.
Riko followed the other girl with their meal and set it on the table before taking her seat.
“Itadakimasu!” Yoshiko clapped her hands together before reaching for her fork. “Mmm! Riri’s cooking is always the best!”
“I’m glad you like it.” Riko replied, taking her own first bite.
No matter how many times Yoshiko said as such, part of Riko continued to worry about making mistakes when she prepared meals. And of course she knew full well that Yoshiko would eat just about anything she made, despite, and sometimes because of said mistakes. Nonetheless, she doubted she would ever tire of watching Yoshiko enjoy the food she had made for her.
The notification for the Aqours group chat sounded on both of their phones.
“Someone must have finished decorating already.” Riko decided. “Should we check?”
Yoshiko agreed and retrieved her phone. “Ah, Ruby and Zuramaru.”
“It’s a lovely display.”
“Yeah, but we can out do them.”
Riko was about to point out that it wasn’t really a competition but was interrupted by Yoshiko laughing. She checked her phone to find Mari being scolded by Dia for her commentary while Kanan played an all-too-casual mediator. She set her device down to resume her meal but continued to listen to her girlfriend laugh as the situation unfolded.
It was a completely different laughter than earlier during the stream. Yohane’s laugh was hearty, deep and more than a little mischievous, while Yoshiko’s was gentler, purer and decidedly sweeter. Like her singing voice, the girl’s laughter had the range of an entire choir. And like her streams, Riko enjoyed listening.
After a few minutes, Yoshiko settled back down and the couple began chatting about various things like their respective days at work and what decorations they most looked forward to putting up. Once they were done, they both cleared their places and headed for the dining room.
“Ne, Riri,” Yoshiko spoke up “one of my little demons sent me a play list of Christmas parody songs. The ones I’ve listened to so far have been pretty funny. Do you want to listen? Otherwise, I have a more normal playlist prepared as well.”
Riko was about to choose the normal list when she realized the parodies would mean comedy. Comedy more than likely meant more laughter from Yoshiko. Suddenly, the weights shifted on her decision-making scale.
“The parody list is fine.” Riko agreed after a moment.
“Thanks, Riri!” She grinned. And with more flourish than was necessary, Yoshiko paired her phone to the stereo and started the music.
“I should be thanking you, Yocchan.”
“Huh?” Yoshiko tilted her head. “For what?”
Oh, had she said that out loud? Well, may as well tell her.
“For your laughter.” Riko started to explain. “For your smile. For your joyful energy that fills this place and makes it a home worth living in. For just, you know, being you. And for being with me.”
For a moment, it looked like Yoshiko might burst into tears, but just as moisture was starting to gather at the edges of her eyes, she blinked it away. “Riri~!” she cried, launching herself at Riko.
Having mostly anticipated this reaction, Riko caught the other girl and pulled her into an embrace.
“You’re welcome! And thank you!” Was all Riko heard before Yoshiko became incoherent.
Riko contented herself by running her hands through curled twin tails while Yoshiko babbled into her shoulder. However, it wasn’t long before what she thought was a classic carol started to play and Yoshiko chuckled. A moment later, she pulled away. Magenta eyes shone like the lights the couple was about to hang.
“This one is one of my favorites.” Yoshiko said excitedly. “I think you’ll like it too, Riri.”
“Alright, I’ll be sure to pay attention to the lyrics.” Riko assured. “Shall we start decorating?”
Yoshiko agreed and the couple started opening boxes. Another Christmas season was underway and Riko quietly prayed for a hundred more to come, each as wonderful as the last.

Riko shook her head and chuckled to herself.
SakurauchiRiko: Never mind
SakurauchiRiko: I’ll see you when I get home

TheFallenAngel: Love you too, Riri
Riko yawned as she entered her room. Idly, she reached over and switched on the light. Her eyes widened as she spotted a blue haired head poking out of the covers on her bed. Drat! She quickly snapped the switch back off, hoping she hadn’t awakened the other girl.
Cursed muscle memory. Certainly, she hadn’t forgotten; Yoshiko had been the primary reason Riko had ran to make it to the last train of the night. Last year, she would have been fine missing the train and staying on a guest futon, but nowadays she wanted to make it home to be with her girlfriend. And if she was being honest, she had begun to feel this way even before they had become a couple; she enjoyed having someone dear to her be around when she got home.
Granted, it had barely been over a week, so she wasn’t used to Yoshiko sleeping in her room just yet, and certainly not used to the typically nocturnal gamer going to bed before her. Before they were a couple, it was not unusual for Riko to turn in while Yoshiko continued the game or stream or whatever had her attention for a few more hours. However, now they were both starting to adjust their sleep schedules for what Riko assumed to be the same reason; spending more time in bed together, and not just to sleep.
Also, Yoshiko’s theater troupe was gearing up for production, which meant rehearsals were becoming more intense. Thus, despite Yoshiko’s adamant proclamation of staying up, it didn’t surprise Riko that she’d run out of energy. What did surprise her was that the younger girl had managed to make it to their bed instead of crashing on the couch or wherever she happened to be. Memories of finding Yoshiko in strange sleeping positions ran through Riko’s mind as she changed into her pajamas.
Carefully, Riko lifted up the comforter just enough to slide under. Yoshiko was a sound sleeper, but Riko still wanted to take all precautions possible. And so far, there had been no indication that the younger girl had been awakened. However, as Riko turned onto her side to face her girlfriend, Yoshiko’s arm suddenly snaked out toward her.
Though Yoshiko’s eyes did not open, when her hand landed on empty sheets between them, her brow furrowed. She uttered a soft, almost plaintive mewl as she tried again, only to find more sheets. Riko smiled and held back a chuckle as she realized what Yoshiko was seeking and slid her own hand out. Finally, Yoshiko found her target and closed her fingers over Riko’s. Immediately, her brow unknitted and the edges of her lips tugged up ever so slightly as she murmured something that may have been her nickname for Riko.
Riko felt her heart melt at the adorable sight before her. She’d long since known Yoshiko was a highly touchy-feely girl, particularly with those she considered close friends; elite little demons as she liked to call them. It was quite common to find her resting, leaning against someone like Hanamaru or Ruby, or even going so far as using their laps for a pillow. She was also fond of grappling, happily giving strange names to various holds; a habit she managed to drag Riko into as well.
And it all amped up to eleven once the two of them started dating. Yoshiko was constantly hugging Riko, sneaking up to steal a kiss, leaning against her, using her as a pillow and basically just finding various ways to maintain some sort of physical contact. And holding hands. Especially as they slept. It was a trait of Yoshiko’s that Riko found quite endearing.
But for some reason, tonight, after racing home with the sole intent of falling asleep beside the fallen angel for whom she herself had fallen, it was Riko that found herself wanting more physical contact. She knew she didn’t have enough energy to, how to put it… recreate some of the scenes from the doujin under her bed, but she definitely wanted more.
Without her bidding, Riko’s arms reached out and…
“Kyaa!?” Yoshiko cried, eyes snapping open. “Ri…?” The second syllable was cutoff as her face was pressed into Riko’s chest.
Oh no! That wasn’t what Riko had wanted. Well, it was what she had wanted, but it wasn’t, and… Oh for… She hadn’t wanted to awaken Yoshiko, that’s for sure. So, why had she just done that? She suddenly found herself worried that the other girl would be angry and push away from her, and she definitely did not want that.
Then Yoshiko slipped her arm around Riko’s waist. She shifted her hips and slid the rest of her body closer as well. Once all possible points of contact had been established, Riko felt more than heard her girlfriend release a slow, content sigh.
Silence filled the room for a few moments before Riko tilted her chin down to plant a kiss atop Yoshiko’s head. “Sorry for waking you, Yocchan.” she said quietly, unable to resist running her fingers a few times through her girlfriend’s hair.
“Sorry f’r no’ s’aying up un’il you go’ back…” came the muffled reply as the younger girl nuzzled in even more.
“It’s alright.” Riko laughed lightly. “I know you’ve been working hard with Hayashi-san and the crew. You’ll tell me all about it in the morning, right?”
“… mmm…”
Riko smiled and made one more pass though the soft blue strands. “Good night, Yocchan.” She whispered as she closed her eyes.
“… ‘nigh’ Riri…”

Heavenly Life: Transfer

Author’s Note: By the gods, it’s been too long...
“What the hell, Mari?” Yoshiko griped, storming into the captain’s office.
“Language.” Mari stated, not looking up from her work.
“Whatever.” The blue-haired girl growled.
“Good to see you back to your normal self, by the way.”
“Thanks…?” Yoshiko felt herself lose some of her initial momentum. “Wait, no, that’s not the point! You want to repay me by setting me up with her? You can’t be serious!”
“Would you prefer I say ‘<It’s joke!>’?” The blonde finally looked up as she used an ancient language with intentionally incorrect grammar that she’d often repeated.
“Ughn…” Yoshiko’s shoulders slumped. “… No…” She shook her head. “No, I really wouldn’t.” Had it really reached a point that Mari was aware of the effects of that overused phrase of hers and had found a new way to annoy with it?
“So, what’s the problem, do you not like her?”
“That’s not what I said!” Yoshiko protested, waving her arms frantically. “But we’ve already met, so you wouldn’t be setting me up.”
“Oh? Are you dating already?”
“D-dating? What? No!”
“Do you not want to date her?”
“I… I…” Yoshiko could feel her face flush. “Well, yeah, sure I suppose there’s a possibility I might kinda sorta want to maybe go out with her.” She fumbled through admitting. She knew it was foolish to flatly deny it because Mari could read her like a book. “She’s amazing. A bit naïve. But beautiful. And…” She sighed. “But I’d only want to if she would be alright with someone like me.”
“I believe she might be more interested than you realize.”
“Really?” Yoshiko hated how much hope seeped into her voice.
“Let’s just say she has some… unexpected tastes.” Despite her teasing tone, Mari’s smile seemed genuine. “I’ll let you in on a few, but don’t tell her that you know. She seems to be under the impression that they’re still a secret.”
The blue-haired girl tilted her head in curiosity.
“My point is that I’m going to help you get closer to her.” The blonde explained. “How far you decide to progress will be up to the two of you. But from what I know, you both have your shares of insecurities when it comes to socializing, particularly in the friendship and romance departments. So, I intend to give advice and help where I can.”
“You’re not just doing this as a way to tease me, are you?” Yoshiko couldn’t help some lingering suspicion despite her growing anticipation.
Mari’s grin grew. “Oh, you’ll never be completely free of my teasing, Yoshiko-chan.”
“Yohane.”
“Believe it or not, I consider you to be an important friend and she now serves under me.” Mari explained. “So I want you two to be happy, be it as friends, as girlfriends, or whatever.”
“…” Yoshiko found herself unsure as to what she should say. While she couldn’t really deny that she also considered Mari a friend, putting it into words was a more difficult task than slaying hundreds of demons.
“Also, I know you were awake when I told her that you needed more friends like her. And you heard all that other stuff as well.”
The blue-haired girl nodded her affirmation.
“I wasn’t kidding, you know.”
The two angels stared at one another for a few moments.
“T… Thank you.” Yoshiko finally managed to break the silence.
Mari smiled in response. “Oh, and since you’re already here, I don’t have to send someone else to find you and deliver the news.”
“News?”
“I’m being transferred to Reusbasium.”
“Reusbasium?”  Yoshiko searched her knowledge of angelic territory but drew a blank.
“A town out near the border.” Mari explained. “It’s small, quaint, lovely and quite peaceful.”
Peaceful? Yoshiko furrowed her brow. That certainly wouldn’t describe anywhere near the border with demon territory, so that left fey. “So why the heck are you, of all people, being transferred there?”
“Recent reports have been coming in suggesting the demons are attempting to sway the fey to their side. As you know, this absolutely cannot happen.”
“Of course.”
“As such, I am being sent to monitor the situation, and if necessary, propose a counteroffer to have them join us. Or remain neutral, that would be an acceptable outcome as well. And the one I would personally prefer; they don’t need to be dragged into our eternal war.”
“It probably wouldn’t be eternal for much longer after they chose a side.” Yoshiko mused aloud.
“Exactly. And at a terrible cost to them. I’d rather they continue to stay out of it, for their own sake.”
“But again, why you?”
“There is concern that should the demons fail in negotiations, they may quietly annex the sparsely populated borderlands and use it as a staging point for an invasion.”
“And you could decimate any reasonable reconnaissance force before they become too powerful?”
“Something like that.”
“Hrm…” Yoshiko thought for a moment. While the explanation provided made sense at face value, she was all but certain there were details being left out. Then again, that was par for the course when it came to the likes of the eccentric captain. Thus, instead of prying for said details, she asked, “So why tell me all of this?”
“Because I’m not going alone.”
“Of course not. But I don’t serve under your command…”
“But Rikocchi does.”
Yohsiko blinked.
“I have asked her to join the select few I will be bringing with me to Reusbasium. And she agreed.” Mari set her elbows on her desk and folded her hands under her chin. “I did not order her, but I believe she likes the idea of a peacekeeping assignment as opposed to city defense.”
“Yeah… That probably would suit her better…” Yoshiko agreed. “But if there is concern of an invasion, how would that be any different than here?”
“Because our intent would be to dissuade such tactics in the first place.”
“I suppose…”
“Anyway, I obviously cannot order you to do anything, but if you wish to continue getting closer to Ricocchi…”
“… I’ll… go pack my things…”
“Good to hear.” Mari smiled. “Would you like to tell her yourself, or should I?”
“I’ll tell her myself, thanks.”
“<Fantastic.>”
Then, without another word, Yoshiko turned on her heel and made her departure.
“Yocchan?” A voice said from the hall.
“R-Riri?!” Yoshiko spun toward the redhead behind her.
Holy hell, that dress was adorable. It was just a simple white dress, standard angelic fare, with pink flowers as accents, but it suited the healer far better than any armor in the realm. And Yoshiko couldn’t take her eyes off her.
“I…” Yoshiko’s voice cracked, forcing her to pause and clear her throat. Geez, was this going to happen every time they met? “I was just looking for you.”
“Well, you found me.” Riko smiled. “And I was actually looking for you as well.”
Riri was looking for me? Why does that make me so happy? Yoshiko found herself wondering. Well, I know why it makes me happy, but why to such an extent? However, when the redhead’s smile turned wistful, she became worried instead.
“I’m sorry, Yocchan.” Riko’s gaze swung downward. “I know we just met and I made a promise to help you, but…”
“You’re being transferred again.” Yoshiko finished when the other girl trailed off.
“I volunteered.”
“I know.”
Riko looked up. “You do?”
“Mari just told me. But…”
“Would you come with us?” Riko suddenly asked. “Oh, sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt.”
Yoshiko laughed. “I was just going to say that yes, I will be joining you in Reusbasium.”
“That’s wonderful.” Riko’s natural smile returned. “I can introduce you to my friends.”
“In Reusbasium?”
Riko shook her head. “No, across the border.”
“You have friends among the fey?”
“Uh huh.” Riko nodded. “And I haven’t seen them in ages. In fact, I accepted the transfer here because it got me that much closer, but now I’ll be stationed right there on the border.”
“Hrm…”
“You don’t like fey?”
“No, that’s not it.” Yoshiko shook her head. “I guess I always thought they weren’t that fond of us, something about angels being too uppity or whatever. I mean, they don’t hate us; they aren’t our enemies like the demons.” Even though… She wondered if she should finish that thought.
“I think you’ll find them more accepting than you seem to believe.”
“Maybe…”
“Besides, you’re not exactly the stereotypical uppity angel.”
That was certainly true, so Yoshiko bobbed her head back and forth in amused agreement.
“So…” Riko furrowed her brow as a thought occurred to her. “If you weren’t planning on spending time in fey territory, what were you planning to do in Reusbasium?”
Yoshiko shrugged. “Besides hang out with you and be on the lookout for demons to fight?”
Riko laughed lightly. “Yes, besides that.”
“I’ve been fine with just Phobetor up until now, so…”
“You should visit Campi, on the other side of the border.”
“Maybe…”
“It’s where I will be meeting my friends.”
“Hrm…”
“They have an amazing hot spring.”
Yoshiko raised an eyebrow.
“Don’t think I won’t drag you there.”
“Are you saying I need a bath?”
“No, that’s…” The other girl’s laugher cut her off.
“I’m sorry, I’ll come with you to Campi.” Yoshiko said, still chuckling “I can’t remember the last time I’ve been to a hot spring. Think they’d allow Phobetor in?”
“I thought cats hated water?”
“He’s about as normal a cat as I am a normal angel. I think he’d love it.”
“So,” a voice suddenly said from nearby “are you going to stand here flirting all day or are you going to get ready for travel?”
“F-flirting…?” Yoshiko sputtered, spinning to spy Mari standing in the open doorway of her office, wearing a sly grin.
“I’ve secured a transport for the two of you and they’ll be ready to go by noon.”
“We’re not going with you?” Riko asked, her cheeks only starting to lose the redness that had blossomed a moment ago.
“Well, you can, Rikocchi.” The blonde pointed out. “But that would leave…”
“I see.” The redhead nodded. “Understood.”
“I can be ready by then.” The blue-haired girl offered.
“Good, then you’ll be meeting them at the gate at that time.”
“Do you need any help packing, Yocchan?” Riko turned her attention to the other girl in the hall.
“I’ll be good, thanks.” Yoshiko replied. “There isn’t much.”
“So, see you at the gate at noon?”
“Alright, see you then.”
Just before departing, Yoshiko was able to steal one last glance at Riko’s smile. On her way to her soon-to-be-former home, she found herself thinking about the redhead. She couldn’t help recalling that Riko hadn’t denied the possibility that they had been flirting, even if Mari had only been teasing. And she had just chosen to forgo traveling with the rest of the task force in favor of going with Yoshiko. Perhaps… maybe… just maybe, Mari was on to something with her offer. And maybe, just maybe, Yoshiko might think about taking her up on it.

What are your personal thoughts on Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight? To me, it's such a cool anime (but still an LL fan). Mimorin and Hinahina are both in it.
Honestly more attached to the seiyuus than the characters I enjoyed StarRev so far, but only because I’m really fond of Banana-chan and Junna. There are many things I keep rolling my eyes at but I will still keep watching it. The animation is super gorgeous and I love the songs.
Probably unpopular opinion but I”ll be honest here:
As main characters, I feel both Karen and Hikari quite flat. Karen’s drive to win the Revue is shallow compared to the other girls’. That’s especially shown in ep3 - Maya acknowledges Claudine but she also understands that there can only be one Top Star. And so, the best she could do is to keep Claudine as number2, her partner.
Karen kept arguing that she wants to be Top Stars with Hikari but, why? What’s the real story behind it, other than a childhood promise? I know more backstory/information will be revealed of course, but for a MC, it’s really bad not to give the audience a relatable/compelling drive XD;;
Tbh, I was really pissed off when she easily neutralized Hikari and Junna’s fight in ep1, and easily defeating Junna in ep2. Like, wtf, you just entered the Revue out of nowhere and OP’d your way through both matches? Don’t fcking look down on bows & arrows I get quite defensive about that I’ll just pretend Junna lost because she’s still recovering and she had doubts. No one faints from exhaustion and bounce right back up ready for a fight.
Hence I cheered so much when Maya beat her. You learn from loss/defeat, so hopefully Karen will grow as a protagonist after that, perhaps re-evaluate why she’s in the Revue at all.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Karen. She’s sweet and kind, and I understand her reasoning of wanting to break the rules/traditions so that everyone can be a Top Star. But yeah, I just find the delivery of her goal poorly done.
Don’t get me started on Hikari. The only plus point she has atm is that her VA is Mimorin. That’s it. Not fond of constantly brooding chars. If only they’d shown enough hints why she’s angsting.
Nothing much to say about Futaba and Kaoruko atm, just that I do like their dynamic with the group so far but I do need more info on them. Ditto for Mahiru, but I do feel really bad for her. (I’m sorta reminded of VividRed Operation, of the triangle between Akane, Aoi and Rei. Yup, I didn’t like Rei either lol)
Maya and Claudine should just smut already with all that sexual tension are intriguing and very meme-able. Maya’s song in ep3 is my fav one so far cuz the lyrics fits her so damn much, I love it. This is Sparta.
Last but not least, best girls Banana and Junna. iirc Junna is the only one who calls her actual name Nana instead of her nickname and y’all know how weak I am towards special names (Lily-Yocchan hello) but that’s not why they’re my best girls. Banana, mom of the group, genuinely tries to befriend Hikari and in ep3 is actually trying out being director, which I think is really cool. Junna is a very hard worker and I always have a soft spot for underdogs. Those who work hard deserve to get recognized and not being easily swept away by some OP’d MC cheh
Anyway, this is not my final opinion on StarRev. There are still room for improvement. This is only ep3 after all.
The Giraffe? I’ve long given up trying to make sense. If this is some magical girl/fantasy genre show, I won’t mind but … isn’t this supposed to be closer to real life…??? WHY IS THERE A TALKING GIRAFFE AND WHY IS NO ONE WEIRDED OUT WHY DID THE GIRLS JUST ACCEPT ITS PRESENCE my brain just cannot handle pls logics pls

Author’s Note: This is the fouth of the four entries in a set I am calling Unsent. The idea was inspired by a contest over on Sukutomo to write a love letter to one of the idols. These were kind of fun to write, so depending on whether or not my µ’s muse strikes, I may very well end up writing a few for some of the other ships in HtHaN and HL.
Dear Yocchan,
I love you.
Now why the heck was it so easy to write, but so hard to say? It was such a simple phrase; just a few syllables. Why did her tongue freeze the moment her gaze met those brilliant magenta eyes? Well, that wasn’t entirely true, she could speak quite easily with Yoshiko about pretty much anything, even things she wouldn’t talk about with her own mother. Anything except this; likely the most important thing she needed to say now. Riko sighed and continued writing.
But you know, it’s strange. Though I’ve only recently come to realize it, I cannot help feeling like I’ve loved you for a long time. As in longer than we’ve known each other. As in possibly in another life. And the longer we live together, the stronger this feeling becomes. As random and eclectic as you like to believe you are, I feel like I’ve already seen it all and I can almost predict much of it.
But don’t think I’m saying you’re not special. You absolutely are special, Yocchan. And while you often have a flair for the dramatic, I’ve come to enjoy your unique way of looking at the world and yourself. Honestly, I envy the confidence with which you typically hold yourself, particularly Yohane. And though I admire how well you handle your misfortune, I am pleased to see that things have improved over the years. But what truly shines about you is your smile. To borrow a bit of your theatrics, you could command a whole host of angels with that smile of yours. Or legion of demons, I suppose, if you prefer.
And behind all the theatrics and bravado is one of the kindest hearts I’ve ever known. For proof, one need look no further than your treatment of stray animals. The lengths to which you will go to ensure their wellbeing is nothing short of incredible and the bond you form with many of them is endearing. I hope we might find an apartment someday that will allow you to keep one or two for yourself.
I know I’ve told you this before, but I am truly happy you agreed to live with me here. While I have no doubt that I would have fared fine on my own, the life and energy you bring to this place is irreplaceable. It’s wonderful knowing that after a long day of classes with strangers, someone I care about will be with me at home afterward. I love watching you get engrossed in an intense game. I love seeing you get excited about some new design technique you’re studying. I love how passionate you are about your streams and how diligently you tend to your fanbase. And I love having a dedicated audience and kindly critic when I am working on my music.
And then there is your sense of taste. It may be a strange thing to compliment, but you have no idea how comforting it is to know that no matter what, the food I prepare will be eaten. It’s liberating to not have to worry about some silly little mistake ruining everything. And I must admit that it is rather amusing when you end up preferring the mistake over the intended result. It’s a trait that just fits you so well. And I love it.
Finally, Yocchan, I want you to know that you are a wonderful and cherished friend. And perhaps someday, you might consider being more than friends. We could
Riko paused as a scene from the manga she had read earlier in the day flashed through her mind. Was she really about to write… that? How embarrassing. She felt her cheeks flush and she quickly scratched out the words.
Of course, for better or worse, Yoshiko already knew about her favorite genre of manga; apparently had known since their first trip to Tokyo back in high school. And the younger girl seemed fine with it, or at least not put off by it. If anything, she seemed fond of teasing Riko about it. So, maybe it was alright to include that here?
No. Riko shook her head. This wasn’t that kind of love letter.
She quickly scanned what she had written thus far. This was good enough, right? Sure, it was a little rough, but it was just a first draft. And it wasn’t like she was going to be giving it to Yoshiko right now. There was time to refine it. However, she should probably at least sign it.
Your favorite little demon, Riri
Riko’s phone vibrated.
TheFallenAngel: The Fates have decreed there shall be a change in plans!
SakurauchiRiko: Oh?
TheFallenAngel: Indeed
TheFallenAngel: By utilizing unanticipated yet exceptional markdowns, Yohane has procured all the material components necessary to cast hellfire upon an otherwise heavenly curry dish!
Riko laughed.
SakurauchiRiko: How about casting mere mortal fire on an earthlier curry dish?
TheFallenAngel: I suppose we could do that instead
TheFallenAngel: The material components are similar enough
SakurauchiRiko: You can still cast hellfire on your own servings though
TheFallenAngel: And Riri will try a bite?
Riko chewed her lip.
SakurauchiRiko: We’ll see
TheFallenAngel: Very well
TheFallenAngel: Yohane shall return presently
SakurauchiRiko: See you in a bit
Riko smiled to herself as she folded the letter she had just completed. She then stood and made her way over to her shelf. There, she selected an old, worn book, slipped the letter between its pages and put it back in its place. Finally, she headed for the kitchen to do some preparation for when Yoshiko came with the rest of what was needed for dinner.

Author’s Note: Spoilers for those who have yet to watch the final episode, I guess. I started writing this scene a few weeks ago with the assumption that Riko would not end up using her nickname for Yoshiko in the anime. Now that this has come to pass, I was able to complete it.
The blue-haired girl called her name. Not her given name, though, her special name; a nickname the blue-haired girl had given her so long ago that the redhead could no longer remember. Though the blue-haired girl was known for coming up with such names for her friends, the redhead treasured hers and had even come up with one she used in return.
The blue-haired girl beckoned the redhead closer. She seemed excited to show her something. As the redhead approached, she noticed ancient symbols scrawled underfoot and shifted her stride to avoid disturbing them. She stopped when she realized something seemed off.
It was by no means uncommon for the blue-haired girl to practice archaic rituals, as it was not only a strong interest of hers, but also a particular specialty in her bloodline. Many tides of battle had been turned against those who dwelled deep below when her family brought their formidable magicks to bear.
But something wasn’t quite right this time.
The redhead squinted at the symbols nearest to her. She could read some and guess at others due to the context of their arrangement but many were completely foreign to her. The energy they produced made her skin crawl and as she resumed approaching her friend, a sense of nausea began churning in her stomach.
The blue-haired girl intoned a strange phrase and the energy in the area pulsed. She grinned manically and spoke the phrase again. The gathering magicks obeyed her command and flowed faster into the circle, gathering to a density that was practically palpable. She raised her arms, tilted her head back and shouted the phrase a final time. Critical concentration was almost…
Something snapped.
The redhead instinctively threw up a ward to protect herself as the magic exploded around her. It happened so quick, she could only defend herself and was unable to extend her shield to her friend. However, as the turbulent forces continued to pummel her from all sides for what seemed to be an eternity, though very well could have been mere seconds, she realized she wouldn’t have had the energy to protect both of them. Despite defense being her forte, truth be told, she barely had the power to save herself. Just how much power had the blue-haired girl summoned?
The blue-haired girl… Her friend…
Finally, the torrent of destruction subsided, just in time, before the redhead’s own power was depleted. She dismissed her barrier and scanned the area before her. It didn’t take long for her to find…
“Yocchan!” Riko gasped, sitting straight up in bed.
You-chan? Had she been dreaming about her fellow second year? Odd.
No. The name she had practically shouted was a little different, something like half a syllable shorter.
Yocchan.
Who the heck was Yocchan?
It was most likely a nickname, so who else did she know whose name started with… Yoshiko. Yohane? Sure, it fit; surprisingly well, actually. Not only did it seem to suit the younger girl, it felt familiar for some reason. Very odd.
But why the heck would I be dreaming about Yoshiko-chan? Riko scoured her mind for reasons.
Sure, she and the blue-haired first year had recently bonded over Lae… Nocturne. And the younger girl had been instrumental in Riko overcoming her fear of dogs. But why the heck would she be dreaming about her strange underclassman while calling her some nickname she had never used? It just didn’t make sense.
And for another matter, what kind of nightmare had it been that caused her to wake up in a cold sweat? Riko shivered as she noticed the slight sheen of moisture on her arms. Had her underclassman cast some sort of curse on her? No, that was impossible. Magic didn’t exist. Fallen angels didn’t exist. Even Yoshiko admitted such things herself.
“Yocchan…” Riko spoke the name again. Why the heck didn’t that name feel strange? Riko wasn’t the type to give nicknames to her friends. And certainly, it was at least as strange as the nickname Yoshiko had already given her, right?
Riko pursed her lips. She had found herself more than a little irritated when Yoshiko had started insisting on calling her Riri, but the more she thought about it, she really couldn’t really decide why.
Did the name bother her because no permission had been sought before it was issued? No, that wasn’t it. Yoshiko undoubtedly started calling Hanamaru by Zuramaru without asking permission and the other first year did not seem to mind. For that matter, in a reverse case, none of the girls of Aqours called Yoshiko by Yohane, the name she preferred. And that did irritate the girl who seemed fond of using nicknames.
Perhaps the name annoyed her because it meant that Riko had accepted being one of Yoshiko’s little demons? No, that wasn’t it either. She had accepted that premise before the younger girl had formally joined Aqours. Sure, some of Yoshiko’s antics were over the top and annoying, but she never meant any malice with them. The supposed fallen angel was a good friend and if that meant holding the title of a little demon, then so be it.
Maybe… Just maybe, it was because the name sounded strangely familiar and stirred something within her that she could not comprehend? … Maybe? ... No?
“Riri…” She murmured her own nickname. The name was little more than the first syllable of her real name repeated, however, how it was pronounced made it sound reminiscent of the English word for a lovely type of flower. Had that been intentional on Yoshiko's part?
Something shifted in the depths of her mind. She tried to focus on whatever it was that was buried, but it resisted her mental prodding.
Yocchan… Riri…
It moved again. What the heck?
Riko continued to repeat the names several times to herself, but was unable to uncover the memories further. After several minutes of concentration, she sighed and gave up. Perhaps she was just tired; she had just awakened in the middle of the night, after all. She made a mental note to try to think about the names and the strange sensation they caused when she was more awake.
Perhaps, Riko decided, she should apologize to Yoshiko for reacting as she did to the nickname. It had not been assigned with the intent to tease, rather to signify a bond of friendship. And it was kind of cute.
And maybe, just maybe, she might consider using a nickname for the younger girl as well.
Finally, Riko lay back down and pulled her covers over herself. She closed her eyes and began to drift off, thoughts of an eccentric, blue-haired girl running through her mind.
Author’s Note Continued: I suppose I should go back and edit Machineel Halberd to use the timeline appropriate names.
