Born and raised in New Jersey, Ophelia had always been an emotional child with a perpetual rain cloud over her head. She was her family’s little “Wednesday Addams”. She felt everything so intensely, and when her parents inevitably split, she took it twice as hard.
Her best friend, Adeline, was the glue that kept her life together. She was the opposite of Ophelia - all sunshine and rainbows. Though their friendship seemed like it wouldn’t work, they were inseparable. Adeline balanced out Ophelia’s dramatics and the sorrow that came with adolescence.
Ophelia hated high school and wanted no part of it. She counted down the days till she graduated and looked down on everyone, whether she realized it or not. She hated the jocks, the preps, the popular crowd, and all her peers. The only person who was worth a damn was Adeline.
The only part of school and growing up that she enjoyed was her theater classes. Both she and Adeline had big dreams of pursuing acting. They always starred in their school’s productions and would occasionally skip school to take a train into New York to catch a play on Broadway or see a new movie that came out. Being captivated by that life made her all the more disinterested in high school. She couldn’t wait to leave.
And leave she did - Ophelia and Adeline both got into NYU to study theatre arts. It felt good to be out of New Jersey, but even better to be learning about something she actually cared about.
Ophelia was coming out of her shell some and started hating people less. It was easier being around likeminded individuals.
Life was just beginning, but it seemed soon as it got good, everything came crashing down. Adeline went to a party one night, and though she fought hard to get Ophelia to come with her, Ophelia stayed in. Adeline’s life changed for good, or rather, taken away. She was sexually assaulted that night. The sunny disposition that always followed her suddenly went away.
Ophelia blamed herself for not being with her that night and made it a point to help her try to pick up the pieces of herself. They went to the police, they went to their school, they went to their peers - no one believed Adeline. She eventually dropped out of school and lost interest in just about everything. Though most told Ophelia to continue without her, she just couldn’t. She dropped out of school, as well.
Though she fought hard to bring back the best friend she loved, it seemed she like she was never returning to her normal self. Tragically, Adeline took her own life. It felt like Ophelia died that day, too.
Her death shifted something in Ophelia that changed every fiber of her being. She mourned her best friend, and at some point, the mourning turned into rage. Ophelia made it a point to ruin the lives of those who ruined Adeline’s.
Shifting from this once self-loathing child, she became a vain adult with a lust for revenge. It occurred to her then that maybe this was what she always wanted to be - not the girl with colored hair, piercings, and a gloomy disposition. She wanted to be a star. She became a certified heartbreaker with an intense distaste for men.
Manipulating men became one of her favorite pastimes. It was amazing what she could do with a sexy outfit, witty one-liners, and the bat of her eyelashes.
Though her dreams of being an actress seem far behind her, she works as a bartender in NYC. She spends her nights flirting with men, perhaps taking a few of their bills from their wallet when they’re drunk enough. Relationships with men, romantic and platonic, were always on a surface level. It was either about revenge, sex, or money. It was all they were ever good for.
Ophelia is not sure she’ll ever be able to get over what happened to Adeline and she carries that with her every day.
