What Pet I Think They'd Have and Why: Karasuno Edition

Daichi Sawamura

Of course he'd have a police dog

He's a cop and if he'd have any pet he'd have a buddy to help him bust criminals and fight crime

But I don't think Daichi would have a "normal" dog breed like a German Shepherd, Malinois, or Akita

I feel like Daichi would have a Rottweiler not bc they are my favorite dog breed

But Rottweilers used to be very prevalent in many police forces around the world until German Shepard and Malinois became more common

Also Rottweilers gained a harsh reputation for being aggressive bc they were trained by drug lords and criminals and were used to in fighting

Rottweilers are very muscular, sturdy, and hard working dogs

If trained right and with proper love and care these dogs are GREAT and I mean GREAT companions

They are stubborn and can be territorial with strangers, but, they are very loving towards familiars and family

They are a kind of one or two people fits them kind of dog

They also need constant stimulus as they were breed to be very hardworking dogs

Rottweilers used to pull sleds full of butchered meat bc they were so strong and the original breed was much bigger than the one we know today

They also herded large livestock through the alps and Roman region and are known to be fearless

They are also one of the oldest dog breeds

These dogs became popular Police dogs during the World Wars

Bc they were being used so much their guardian qualities were more showcased so more and more people wanted one to help keep and eye on their children

Since they are herding dogs they are good around children and can keep them in a yard if they are taught the parameters

Rottweilers despite their size generally don't bark a lot either, they are very sneaky when approaching a possible threat and will ppun e from behind

This is why I think Daichi would have one to be by his side

I feel like Daichi would do a lot of research into a good companion and finding a good breeder to find one after deciding

He'd get one as a puppy and personally see to it's training, working with a pro the whole time

His dog would also be a great family protector when he's home with his spouse and possible children, if he ends up having any

Koushi Sugawara

I feel like Koushi would be that really awesome teacher that has a really sweet and sociable pet that he brings in for the kids a lot

I feel Koushi would want soemthing small and cute so a rabbit of some sort would suit him well

Rabbits can be very loving with a small family most of the time or sometimes only one person

Rabbits are prey animals so some breeds wouldn't do well in a loud room full of young children

So what specific rabbit breed would suit his job?

So I chose the Harlequin Rabbit for Koushi

Harlequin rabbits are very social and loving towards owners and strangers alike

They also are known to be very silly, playful and very intelligent

They come in two colour types: Japanese and Magpie

The picture above is an example of Japanese while a Magpie can be colored in just about any other colour other than black nd orange like lilac, white, chocolate, blue and/or black

I feel like this specific type of rabbit would suit him so well as it would be comfortable around all those kids

Be very social and would be less likely to nip them

And it would be energetic enough to keep up with the kids

Koushi wouldn't just want a pet for his classroom though, he'd want a cuddle buddy for at home

He'd want a companion to sit on his lap while he works on lessons

He'd also want a pet that wasn't too lazy as his life would be pretty busy

The only thing is is that rabbits are high maintenance and need very specific foods, medicines, and an experienced vet to care for them

But rabbits are cuddly little crackheads that Koushi would adore

Energetic enough to keep up with his life, but snuggly and home bodied enough to not exhaust him

Asahi Azumane

Asahi is a fashion designer and thus would spend a lot of time hunched over a sketch book making designs

In other words, he has a very home based and indoor job

So he'd need a pet that isn't energetic and obnoxious like a husky or chihuahua

So I chose the Havanese

Havanese is the national dog of Cuba

This dog may be small but they are incredibly sturdy

These dogs become attached quickly and are extremely loyal to said lone owner

Something else that is good for Asahi is these dogs do not do good alone and are willing to follow their owners to the ends of the Earth

They can be described as velcro dogs bc of how attach to the hip with their owners they are

These dogs can be lively and active but they don't need much exercise as they are smaller

Most of their daily exercise can be met in a house with some light play

Also, these dogs are extremely friendly towards strangers and can be described as good host dogs

Another plus for Asahi about this breed is they aren't particularly vocal, most are rather quiet and reserved almost

The last thing you'd want is for people to look down on you for letting your pet act spoiled by barking and nipping at people's ankles

They also love to perform for others

They like attention and are good in groups

Asahi would have to meet with a lot of new people like models and companies and whatnot so a social dog would be best

Asahi also would spend a lot of time in an office or at home and since these dogs don't need much exercise he would be able to have it sleep on his lap while he works without disturbance

I also feel like Asahi would become a bit of a hermit

Like he would contact people but he wouldn't leave his house unless he absolutely had to or wanted to (which isn't often)

Havanese are home-bodied dogs and love just chillin' out on a warm lap or on a couch cushion beside their owners

Yū Nishinoya

Now I DO NOT think Noya should have a pet until he decides to settle down somewhere

Travel can really exhaust a person so it would harm an animal tenfold

So, if you travel a lot DO NOT GET A PET IT WILL ONLY HARM THEM

But if Yū were to have a pet.............................

Noya would need a pet that can travel well, is small enough to not cost a lot, is very attached to their owners, and can eat just about anything

I thought briefly of other rodents since rodents are generally small and can eat just about any food

But raccoons, possums, and other larger rodents that are more common for pets would be too hard to get on planes and boats since you need certification to own them

Rats on the other hand don't need such certifications in most countries and fill all the other requirements

The rat he would have isn't a Dumbo rat like in the picture above, he'd have like a wild rat that he befriended and decided to take with him so it'd most like be brown

Noya would 100% fight anyone who says they hate rats

He hypes up his pet rat to no end

He calls Asahi whenever he can and tells him about all the cool stuff his rat does and sends pictures of his rat being held up to a gorgeous background of famous landmarks in other countries

Nlya always has his rat around the back of his neck and wears a hoodie, scarf, or something like that to hide him so he can join Noya in places that don't allow pets

I also chose a rat bc they are incredibly loyal and I feel like if Noya were to be really tired on a plane and pass out, he would need a pet that he wouldn't have to worry about running away

Of course he has trained his rat to do amazing tricks, you already know

Also, as I previously mentioned, rats can eat just about anything, so his constant travel wouldn't hurt his companion diet

Rats are also quiet generally and aren't overly energetic so he wouldn't have to be worried about being escorted out for having a rat under his scarf

Chikara Ennoshita

Shibas are very independent dog, let's just start with that bc Chikara would need a pet that doesn't need constant attention

With him being a personal trainer he needs a pet that can self entertain

Something else about Shibas is they can often housebreak themselves bc of how fussy and finicky they are

You can also find them cleaning themselves much like a cat

Chikara would be busy for a good bit of his time so he doesn't really have time to properly spend time to housebreak a pet

But Shibas were originally bred to hunt and flush out game like birds and rabbits and other such small animals

A fact about Shibas is they almost went extinct during WWII bc of food shortages a distemper

Distemper is a disease only animals can be affected by that attacks many different systems in their bodies

Also, Shibas are the number one most common companion dog in Japan

Something else about Shibas is that they are fairly healthy, some of the more major problems they have are glaucoma, cataracts, hip dysplasia, entropion, and luxating patella

A lot of eye conditions but are easily avoided if you bring them in for very periodic eye checks and hip examinations

So these are easy to avoid as long you keep an eye on them

Over all I think that if Chikara were to have a pet it would need to be fairly self-sufficient but also something could have a very chill and laid back relationship with

Something that doesn't need to be on his lap all the time but something he can love and nurture

Kiyoko Shimizu & Ryūnoske Tanaka

Now I know I know

Ryu would be a dog person

He'd want a big manly pet not a cat blah blah blah

Kiyoko would definitely be a cat person

She wouldn't want a purebred and would probably find a box of some kittens with Ryu on the side of the sidewalk

Now look me in the eye and lie to me by saying that Ryu would now start crying immediately upon seeing like four lonely little kittens in a box that need a home

Needless to say, they take them home and nurture them endlessly

But Tanaka would be the kind of guy that harness trains his cats so they can go out on walks

Kiyoko would research how to harness train them, what food would be the best, and anything else they need to take care of these four cats

Imagine seeing these two, a big muscular dude and this goddess walking four cats on harnesses down the street

I literally cannot stop thinking about Ryu and Kiyoko cuddling on the couch with all four adult and rather large cats draping themselves across the two of them

I feel like the reason Ryu would want them harness trained is bc he wouldn't be able to spend much time with them

His job as a personal trainer would keep him busy

So on his morning jogs to stay fit he'd want to take not only Kiyoko but the cats as well

•He has an affinity for metal so became a Metal charmer (Makes snitches and incorporates magic into metal items without them losing magic over time or when creator dies)

•Because of the second wand tradition many call the Chen family cursed

•High expectations is expected from all members regardless of age, gender, or birth order but not required (The family is quite nice to each other)

•When a member picks a field they always excel in it

•They are not new in breaking rules/laws or following a morally gray lifestyle

•No one knows why but the Chen family has never had a ghost in their entire history

•While they can be traditional with arrange marriages they are very adaptable so they have gone thru many traditions which has help them maintain their high status

•During birth each member is registered by the Grimoire by placing a drop of their blood on the gem on the cover

•Over the generations the Grimoire has become semi sentient

•Each generation adds something to the Grimoire that could chance the whole wizarding world... spells, curses, hexes, potions, plant, creatures, etc.

•If any generation is ever low on funds they can use a page of the Grimoire and share it to the Wizarding world to get their fortune back (granted whatever they share is a way weaker version with drawbacks or requirements)

•Any member can summon the Grimoire and multiply copies can be an existence

All Dogs Need a Job: How to Keep Your Dog Happy and Mentally Healthy

Mary P. Klinck DVM, DACVB is author of the chapter"All Dogs Need a Job: How To Keep Your Dog Happy and Mentally Healthy," from"Decoding Your Dog," a highly acclaimed publication by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists on dog behaviour. I became a veterinarian because I adored animals and could not think of another career that would be as rewarding. I developed a fascination with the science of animal behavior and learning for a pupil, and a veterinarian, I observed that a number of my patients had behavior issues or could at least gain from behavioral management. Once left unaddressed, and/or mismanaged (even by people with the best of intentions), behavior problems worsened, damaging the relationship with the proprietor. This really drove home to me the importance of the area of veterinary behavior.

What do new owners overlook most before purchasing a puppy that later leads to destruction in the house?

Many pet purchases are impulse buys. A purchaser can be carried away by just how cute the puppy seems and neglect to think about what it'll be like when it grows up (bigger, stronger, more active, etc.). Behaviors which are cute in a pup (chewing, jumping up, barking, pulling on a leash, etc.) tend to be unacceptable in a dog. People may also not look at the depth of the commitment when getting a puppy or dog. Dogs may live well into their teens, and also an owner should know that they will have the time, physical and financial resources, etc., to look after a dog for his entire life.

All dogs have physical demands (like exercise, toileting, eating, drinking, etc.), however, people sometimes forget that they also have behavioral needs (for social interaction, mental stimulation, etc.). A dog also needs help learning how to behave in and out of his home and what's secure and what is not in his environment. If the owner isn't meeting the puppy's behavioral needs, he will find an outlet for them independently. The result might be pretty undesirable!

People also often select a puppy or puppy based on the look of the breed or on a romanticized idea of exactly what the breed/dog would be like. Think about that:

(a) How a puppy of a given breed is shown on TV, at the movies or in books Isn't necessarily the way that strain (or any actual puppy ) will be;

(b) Breed fanciers, books or web sites may Emphasize the positive qualities of this strain, but may not mention temperament, activity level, or other features that could be challenging for an average proprietor;

(c) Dogs of a specific breed can vary markedly. By way of example, dogs bred to work (hunt, herd, do military/police-type actions, etc.) are typically very active and require significant exercise and mental stimulation. Dogs of the identical breed, bred for conformation or puppy functions, may be a lot less work to get an operator. Dogs bred carefully and selectively for certain traits of this breed also differ from those consumed by so-called"backyard breeders" or puppy mills. Nonselective breeding makes for much more variability and you also may not get what you expect!

Keeping in mind activity level, can you suggest some breeds you would recommend for a retired couple who want to travel and take their dog ?

An individual ought to be careful making assumptions about a puppy based on its own breed, since the individual might not be typical of this breed. It's probably most important that the dog be comfortable in changing environments and meeting different people and animals. These characteristics are not specific to particular breeds but could be decided by getting an adult dog whose character is somewhat understood or a pup whose relatives' personalities are known. When one adopts a rescue dog what kind of socialization pattern do you recommend originally?

Puppies go through a sensitive period for socialization when they're developmentally prepared to learn about what is safe and what is not in their own world. This really is between about 3 and 12 weeks old. If one gets a puppy, the owner should benefit from that period. If a person adopts a dog which has passed this age, socialization will not have exactly the same impact on the dog's behaviour. An older puppy or adult dog can learn from his adventures but he is not as a"blank slate." Attempts to socialize a dog may not be appropriate if he's already fearful of, or even competitive toward, certain people or animals. If that's the scenario, it might be best to seek out the help of a veterinary behaviorist.

Socialization refers to controlled optimistic (not impartial, and certainly not unpleasant) vulnerability to various individuals, animals and environment, so the puppy learns that meeting new people and going to new areas is nice, not scary. It also involves avoiding anything which may make the puppy feel anxious or frightened. These principles may also be applied to introducing an older puppy or adult dog to new people and dogs.

Having a new dog, introduce people, creatures and encounters gradually and in a controlled manner, to see the way the dog handles them. Examples of things to prevent, at least initially (since they may be overwhelming to your puppy, and so a terrible experience), are: taking him to the dog park (too many excited dogs might snore on him) and taking him into a block party (too many adults and children for one to restrain his encounters with them).

To prevent forcing a preconceived protocol in your recently adopted rescue dog, how long should you give it before deciding a course of socialization?

Part of keeping good social behavior is planning interactions with people and animals, and tracking themto promote positive experiences and avoid bad ones. This means introducing the dog to people and to animals you know will not hurt or scare him. With a new puppy, one might not have to wait long to have him meet creatures and people outside the household. When he seems quite settled in his new home (which may be when the afternoon after he arrives), then you may start arranging for him to meet some of your pals and their (dog-friendly) dogs.

When family members work or are in school all day, do you recommend choosing a dog walker through the day to maintain a puppy aroused? And, if so, is it better to hire a walker that might be bringing other dogs along or if he/she go it alone with your puppy?

This will be dependent on the puppy's age and toileting needs, as well as his or her temperament. A young puppy will need to have regular toileting opportunities (because he can not be expected to"hold it" for more than the number of hours equivalent to the number of months of age, and one). If you're thinking about a dog walker for an older puppy or dog, that person ought to be carefully interviewed to determine what he/she will do with your dog. For example, will he/she walk him or let him out to relieve himself and then play with him in the lawn? Will he/she bring different critters together? How many, and will they be the same individuals? Consider whether this will be a positive experience for your dog. Remember that multiple dogs imply a higher chance of fights/injury and that your pet walker will not be able to devote as much individual attention to your dog. It's also important to figure out the puppy walker's coaching plan and also to make sure he/she isn't likely to become disciplining (punishing) him inappropriately.

If you should invent 1 dog toy which would address several behavioral problems what would it be?

There's no single dog toy that can provide a fast cure for many behavior issues. However, interactive toys (such as food puzzle toys that produce the dog function to get his treats) can certainly help to use up excess energy or occupy your pet when you're busy. Various types of such toys exist, and dogs have individual preferences (one toy does not fit all).

Retired racing greyhounds make great pets and many become consummate couch potatoes. Is there an action and surroundings you recommend for new owners to interact and socialize with them in the general public?

Groups which adopt retired racing greyhounds frequently require the puppy not to be off-leash except at a fenced-in area (to avoid the dogs from becoming hurt or lost if they take off after something they see). Otherwise, owners can do exactly the very same things they want with another type of dog, depending on the individual dog's character. Owners of retired racing greyhounds may also be able to network with other greyhound owners to get group actions. Play dates with dog friends in a fenced yard or other place, are great. For animals, however, aggression is a natural, normal, healthy, appropriate behavior or reaction.

In cats, aggressiveness can be about self-protection or defense, or it can be offensive—often for the very same reasons. It can also be about play or sex.

Cats are small and vulnerable creatures, and if they did not have aggression as part of their arsenal, it is doubtful whether they would have survived for so many millennia.

TYPES OF AGGRESSION IN CATS

(B) INBRED AGGRESSION IN CATS

A cat who is unpredictably aggressive may just be “wired” wrong. This type of aggressive behavior can only be blamed on or explained by the cat’s own biological makeup.

The cat may lash out at the slightest provocation—for example, when she is startled, when someone comes too close or when a person reaches out to pat her.

Aggression can be passed on in the genes, and since aggression is obviously not a desirable attribute in a cat (despite the “Beware the Attack Cat” signs you may have seen for sale), clearly no breeder would knowingly want to perpetuate this tendency passed on by the parent(s).

A consultation with your vet should help you determine if this is truly inbred aggression or if it is caused by something else, such as a medical condition.

If your cat is a purebred and you got her from a breeder, then you have a legitimate claim with the breeder, depending on what age the cat was when you become aware of the aggression.

There is no hard and fast rule on what that age might be, but using common sense you wouldn’t expect a breeder to honor your claim in a cat who has reached adulthood or her first birthday.

Depending on how serious the problem is, a good breeder should offer to exchange your kitten or cat. At the very least he should remove her parents from his breeding program until he can discover which of them is responsible for this unfortunate trait.

This usually happens with indoor cats, generally because they have access to a window and see an unfamiliar cat outside whom they cannot get to. The adrenaline that flows when your cat sees an intruder and the frustration she feels at not being able to go deal with it can cause an outburst of aggression directed at the next creature who comes along.

This poor victim generally has no idea what triggered the attack and may retaliate or not, depending on her personality and also the underlying hierarchy with the attacking cat. (There may be times when you need to rebuild the self-confidence and self-worth of the cat who has been attacked, which you can do at least in part by spending extra time playing with her.)

Watch your cat. Start paying attention to whether your cat is behaving oddly when she looks out any window, and then see what she is reacting to. If there is a stray or a neighbor’s outdoor cat out there, you want to block your cat’s visual access to her. You don’t want your cat’s redirected attacks to become a habit, so you have to be on alert as to what is triggering the attacks. Such aggression can also be redirected at people or at a family dog.

Potentially, an ongoing problem may result from these moments of frustrated rage, setting up a negative dynamic between two cats where the victim becomes terrified of the aggressor, who may have developed a habit of “beating up” on the victim cat. You may have to separate the cats into different areas of your house until the two are settled down again. At that point, allow the cats back together in the area where the attack happened so it can become a neutral zone.

(D) AGGRESSION TOWARD PEOPLE

It is not considered normal for cats to be aggressive toward people—especially if they aren’t provoked. However, that doesn’t take into consideration the fact that for many cats, too much affection can be a provocation—to which they respond by aggressively lashing out.

This negative behavior from a cat is something that almost everyone has experienced at some time, when a cat they are touching turns on them unexpectedly. Since this is a common occurrence, you need to be prepared for it, understand why it happens and plan ways to avoid provoking it in your cat.

Keep in mind that cats are independent animals who, if they were living on their own without people, would rarely have physical contact with other cats or other animals (including the human animal). Cats are natural loners, and other than to mate or fight, they do not normally have physical contact—which means they will be in a heightened state when touched.

1. Biting Aggression During Petting

Biting is the most common form of aggression in cats toward people, and it is a kind of communication: Your cat is telling you to back off. However, it is pretty unpleasant to be petting your cat and suddenly receive a hard bite when you thought she was friendly and enjoying herself.

Being bitten in this situation can be especially disturbing because it seems to come out of the blue: Your cat is next to you, purring as you pet her, when without warning she reaches back and bites you hard. Did you do something wrong? Is your cat suddenly “possessed”?

Cats bite because of a basic incompatibility between human and cat: We like to pet a whole lot longer than they like to be petted. There is a too-much-of-a-good-thing aspect of giving affection to any cat—the animal reaches a saturation point when she just can’t take any more.

The bite is meant to let you know when that moment has arrived. Cats are not naturally sociable animals—they are intended to live a solitary life, and we interfere with that by making them part of our “family.” Although many cats adore physical affection, they aren’t naturally programmed for it, so when we pour on the affection it seems to cause, in essence, a short circuit in their brains.

2. Petting Aggression in cats

Petting generally creates similar problems to the biting behavior discussed above, but there are some other twists and turns worth noting here.

Physical affection toward a cat that elicits an aggressive reaction from her is sometimes called the “petting and biting syndrome.” It varies from cat to cat, but basically the cat attacks (with teeth and/or claws) the person who is caressing her.

This can happen when a person has been stroking her only briefly, or in other cases after prolonged stroking, but the reaction is sudden and severe, with teeth, claws, and sometimes a powerful backward kick.

Following such an attack, a cat will usually put some distance between herself and you, and then will settle in to groom herself as a way to calm herself down.

The “scratch and bite” response is something you may be creating in your cat if you stimulate her physically more than she can handle. If you pet a cat too intensely or for too long, she may have an eventual meltdown and turn on you because you have stimulated her past the point where she can process it or control herself.

This can be true of a cat you have adopted who came from a situation where she was neglected and craving affection—but then when you give it to her she is overwhelmed. It’s too much of a good thing, too “rich” for her system, and she lashes out without understanding why.

What Causes Petting Aggression in cats?

One theory is that the cat is in a kitten-like frame of mind when accepting your physical attentions and so she allows herself to be coddled. But then all of a sudden her brain switches gears to the adult, independent side of her personality, which rebels against being held or confined in any way, even against being stroked on your lap. And so she lashes out to assert her independence.

Another theory is that a cat’s personality type has a lot to do with it. Whether or not a cat becomes hyperaroused from affectionate contact may be a reflection of her underlying nature. Think of cats as being generally divided into two personality types, warm and cool.

There is rarely, if ever, an aggression problem with warm cats, who demonstrate a need to spend time with people and to experience physical affection from them. It is logical that when a warm cat’s desire for contact is the greatest, she is highly unlikely to respond negatively to human affection.

Conversely, cool cats may be all right with contact that they initiate and can terminate at will, but they may reject advances from a person who tries to pat or play with them.

If you think your cat may be hurting somewhere—inside or out—you should let the vet have a look at her. If you realize that your cat bites you every time you touch a certain area, this could be a pain response and you need to get it checked out.

Ways to Avoid Triggering Biting

Neuter your cat before she reaches maturity.

Handle and groom your cat frequently and from a young age if possible.

Groom with the same guidelines as for petting: Keep it short and sweet.

Give your cat her own space—don’t be constantly physical with her.

Let your cat come to you for affection, not the other way around.

Keep petting sessions really short—no more than 1 minute.

Try to stop petting while the cat is still eager for more.

Try giving a good treat (such as chicken) after a petting session.

Try desensitization: no petting at all for a few days, then make it very brief when the cat initiates contact, and gradually increase the length of petting sessions.

Ways to Deal With a Cat’s Aggression In Cats Toward People

Learn when your cat tends to react aggressively so you can avoid those circumstances.

Limit the amount of time you spend caressing or playing with your cat, and the number of times you engage her. If she does attack you, try to figure out how long you were caressing her before she lost it, and next time stop short of that amount of time.

Leave your cat wanting more.

Don’t touch the sensitive spots on your cat—her belly and hind legs. A cat’s back and head are the least sensitive areas, generally speaking.

Be prepared with a squirt bottle or water pistol when you see your cat stalking you!

Clap your hands and say “No!” sharply to interrupt what she was going to do to you.

(E) TERRITORIAL AGGRESSION IN CATS

A dominant cat in a multi-cat home may show you some of the same aggressive behavior she displays to the other cats to maintain her position in the hierarchy.

This behavior can include blocking your path by lying across doorways, staring directly at you, mouthing (where she puts her teeth on you without applying pressure) or actually biting you when you try to lift her.

General Tips for Dealing with Aggression In Cats

See the vet to rule out possible underlying medical/physical causes.

Learn your cat’s individual body language and be alert for warning signs.

Avoid situations that triggered the aggression previously.

Spend time sitting in the room where the cat tree is or where it’s most likely that fights might take place so you can be there to intervene.

If you are there when aggression begins, turn it into a play session instead.

Interrupt aggression with an unemotional reaction: Clap your hands or throw a shake can, but don’t make it about your disapproval.

Use the least amount of aversion technique (spray bottle, splashing a glass of water) needed to get the desired results.

Create distinct “safety zones” where each cat has food, water and a litter box and can avoid the other cat(s).

Consider reducing the number of cats you have in the household.

Discuss drug therapy with your vet and, if appropriate, use the smallest possible dose for the shortest possible time, combined with behavior modification.
