In my heart, the Mortalitasi have a buddy program where older kids who have been with them a little while get paired with younger kids who have recently joined as a way to help them acclimate
#OOC / HOLLY.#and in my heart this is how Johanna and Emmrich first met#2 years is not a big gap but s t i l l#somehow it makes sense in my head they got paired up#esp when you consider that altho magic can manifest quite young it *normally* manifest around pre/early teens#if Jo and Emm were both on the young end of their magic manifesting then โ#listen I'm trynna explain this it makes sense in my head#so she wasn't exactly acerbic at this point but she was reticent and not the friendliest#she wouldn't have taken to a teenager buddy tbh#she would respond better to someone closer to her age#which Emm is and he'd been with the Mourn Watch long enough by that point#and was old enough and I think was of a suitable temperament to qualify as a buddy#but you don't make a what? 11yo? a buddy to say a 13 or 14 or 15yo#which canonically the majority of mages are#the idea is you do want the buddy to be older so there's more of an older sibling you can trust vibe y'know?#so he's perfect to pair with someone whose magic also manifested younger than average and is younger than him#aka Johanna โ and their personalities at that point would pair well#for all that Jo became protective of him and also razzed him constantly#there's also that 'older brother' vibe y'know. esp with him encouraging her#to have a social life and 'dragging' her to parties and constantly trying to steer her down a better path#in my heart I perceive an older brother - younger sister dynamic alongside the best-friends-turned-nemeses vibes is what I'm saying
