when do you think mulder and scully actually first got together?
y'all know that rob bowman quote that i'm always talking about where he was discussing directing the FTF hallway scene?? there's a part of that commentary where he said:
"he’s gotta tell her why it is that she’s so important to him. and tell her once and for all that in fact, the whole time that they’ve been together, that the two of them have been together, that she has made him better."
and that's kind of how i think about it. the entire time that they have been together, they have been together.
as far as what you're asking about, i'm a "secret season of sex" believer. i think millennium was probably their first kiss and it just progressed from there. you can tell that something is different after millennium. they're sooo flirty in rush. they're absolutely giddy in the goldberg variation. that whole season there's just an energy shift, there's less tension in a lot of ways, more in others.
i don't think that all things was their first time.
i think that IVF started late s6 and ended early s7. in the per manum flashback scenes, their body language changes so much between the beginning and the end. you can tell that they weren't together yet when they agreed to try, there's a bit of an awkwardness in the dialogue, and the way she hugs him and then visibly questions herself and pulls away.
whereas, in the final flashback, when she comes back to her apartment and tells him that it didn't work, there's no pretense. they fall into each other. she cries. she's kissing him all over. they're so wrapped up in each other, in this grief.
meaning, i think they decided to try to have a baby, and then acknowledged how truly "together" they really are, during that process. how much they have done together and will do together and want to do together.
that it was her "last chance," for something that she really wanted, and she wouldn't do it without him. it's kind of hard to ignore when you get to that point.
