Caller: "Yes, hi! I'm Nishel, the EMO [Entertainment and Morale Officer] on my ship. We hired a human about a month ago, and I'm struggling to keep up. Is it normal for humans to tire of activities so quickly?"

O: "That depends on the human, and the activities. Could you tell me a little more?"

C: "Yes. When we hired the human, she brought books and knitting supplies to entertain herself, which I though was helpful, but after a day or two she requested some puzzles. I was able to approve and acquire some fairly easily, but the human returned only a few days later asking for scrapbooking materials, and, well, the same thing happened. Over the last month, I've acquired puzzles, scrapbooks, a climbing wall for the gym, locks and a lockpicking set -- that one was a hassle to get approved, more knitting supplies, crochet supplies (I don't even know how that's different from knitting?), painting supplies, face painting supplies (again, I don't know how that's different), strange plastic bricks that fit together, and a violin. And that's just what was approved. I've also heard from the crew that she's downloaded more books, started writing stories on her personal computer, and started learning how to write programs, and yet, with all these things, she told me this morning that she has nothing to do and was bored. I don't know what else to do. I've spent 78% of this year's entertainment budget this month!"

O: "That's a lot. Some humans have a few different hobbies at once, but usually not that many. Do you have access to crew psychological evaluations?"

C: "Yes, when necessary for morale concerns."

O: "Is there anything in the human's file?"

C: "It says Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, which is also something she's mentioned a few times, but that's tagged for possibly interfering with work, not morale."

O: "ADHD would explain it. It shouldn't only be tagged as work-related as it can actually affect a human's whole life. This is another human thing that's different for everyone, with some hyper-fixating on one thing for a really long time, or different aspects of a single subject, and others, like your crewmember, gaining and losing interest in many different things very quickly."

C: "So this will keep happening? I can see about increasing the budget for next year, but I don't think this is sustainable long term."

O: "Don't panic, there's actually a cheaper method. Communicate with other ships and supply stations with humans on board to see if they are having a similar problem. If you can find others who get and lose hobbies quickly, you can trade the supplies; give them what your human is done with, and receive their extras for her. This will also have the extra benefit of building social connections as they discuss and trade."

C: "That makes sense. It would take a lot of coordination, but I can start asking the nearby fleet."

O: "Good. I will also send a report to the Alliance to see if something can be officially established. Is there anything else I can help you with today?"

C: "No, thank you, Mindy. You've been a great help."

O: "Of course. Don't hesitate to call again if something else comes up."

When I did my poll, most people voted for stuffed animals, and I recently finished a few that I can show my skills with. The blue penguin is my latest finished piece, with the purple penguin the first thing I ever crocheted side-by-side for comparison of how much I've learned in the last ~7 months. The mouse is technically unfinished because the eyes aren't embroidered yet, but I made it in about a day and a half, for timeline purposes.

I also just finished the above dice bag octopus about an hour ago for my roommate, which took about three hours of non-stop work (I turned on a movie and got through the stitches pretty quick). I can make them in any color you want, with either the plastic safety eyes or embroidered eyes. Most of these can be entirely customizable, just let me know what you're thinking and I'll see what I can do!

I don't have any pictures of any of the hats or scarves I've made because it's been a few years, but I made some stockings for the apartment for Christmas last month, and that's one of my most recent projects. The green one was the last one I made, and probably the most accurate to what my capabilities are now.

Figured I should probably re-introduce myself since I haven't really talked much about myself in... a while, and some new people showed up recently (hooray!)

So! Name's Guardy. German, late 20's, queer as hell. Currently finishing a Masters degree in Medieval and Renaissance studies, so poke me if you ever want Ten Fun Monk Facts or a half-hour monologue about handwriting culture.

I'm technically a writer first, a visual artist second, a (bad) musician third and a fiber artist fourth, but I do most of my art and writing over on @johnnys-green-pen (aka for the Emergency! fandom) these days, and anyway, the spinning's more fun to talk about.

This is my spinning wheel:

It's a tiny-ass thing with some odd quirks that I got off of ebay classifieds for all of 40 bucks, and as much as it drives me nuts sometimes (offset flyer hooks, TINY bobbin, 1:6 treadle ratio, picky about drive bands, guzzles oil like an old hippie bus that's sprung a leak, narrow orifice), I also love it dearly.

I knit and crochet (and do some tablet weaving), but I'm not very good at either, so I mostly just throw yarn at a friend of mine who basically treats crocheting as a fidget toy and is thankfully happy to make stuff for me as long as I supply the yarn and it's stuff she enjoys working with.

I've been spinning for about six months now; two of them (partly) on the wheel.

I'm also doing the Tour de Fleece this year; I'll talk about my project list for that real soon!

WIP Wednesday - 2023 May 31

I'm back, but no promises about better than ever. I can't live up to that pressure. :D But what I can do is give a quick update on my current WIP status.

WIP Count: 4 1, crochet 2 knit, 1 Tunisian crochet

I have one more crochet project on hiatus, as it's a bit in limbo awaiting my decision for if I plan to continue it, so for now my count remains just 4.

I have been eager to play with some summer yarns - those light cottons and silky smooth bamboos, as it's approaching the hottest months of the year here in the Northern Hemisphere. Except I keep getting these lovely merino wools that have me whipping out the winter ideas.

I've been working with this absolutely GORGEOUS yarn from Arcane Fibre Works out of Canada, in a limited colorway called "Calm Waters." It's these soft yellows and green-blues that I scooped up once I found out the listing was in its last couple skeins.

Since its 80/20 Merino and Nylon in a lightweight fingering, I figure I can get away with it as a summer knit. And yes, you read that right! I am a crocheter choosing the new craft for working up this beautiful yarn. I experimented a little, but there's just truly something special about how these hand-dyeds take to knitting.

I am working on a shawl called the Mara Shawl by Madeline Tosh, available on Ravelry here. This is a FREE pattern, and it's lovely for showing off a lovely colorway. For the first part it's all garter, and I am new enough to knit, that this has been a joy watching the striping take effect.

For the WIP, this is just a phone pic of the progress, so the quality is low, but- it's starting to be a pretty decently sized triangle at the moment.

Since I have two hanks, I do hope she ends up a nice big size so I can fully wrap the shawl around my shoulders when complete. I am tempted to order one more hank just to be safe... and maybe have another credit card mishap.....

It's another LONG w.i.p. Wednesday! Explanation for why I haven't been making these, I guess:

took a week off in October cause I didn't feel like taking pics, then we had company and I didn't have time to do it, and then I got sick, ugh. But now I'm back and I'm gonna try to do these when I can again, possibly not every week, maybe every other week, cause I want to spend more time reading and writing this month if I can. (it's gonna be my first 'real' NaNoWriMo. Where I have a goal and such).

first off, the confession. I frogged the cardigan part of the og skulls cardigan. I kept looking at it, and looking at it, and I went 'I'm never going to wear this, I'm just doing it, to do it'. It's gone through like, three other iterations that I haven't been talking about cause I was really just trying to figure it out. I've finally found something I'm excited about making, which is a pieced together cardigan of double crochets, where on the right side rows I crochet through the back loop only. I'm feeling very inspired by this, especially since I could work on this even when I was super foggy from having a cold. Sadly, it did not get done in time for Halloween, but also I didn't intend for it to be just for Halloween. Hopefully this is something I'll wear all winter. It's my main w.i.p. rn and I hope to get it finished this week, so I'll post finished pics when I get it done.

and another 'wellllll there was a goof' project, lol. I messed up the left sock of my hocus pocus socks. so I decided to frog it, since then it would be easier to make the heel flap and gusset of the right sock! so! i then paused the first sock until I can catch up on the second sock, and when they are both ready to knit the foot, I'll pick them both up to knit two at a time again. I just haven't been able to knit very much cause of the foggy head from my cold. But! I am really happy with these and hopefully I'll have them done before the end of the year.

I picked back up the pass the honey cardigan! mostly cause it was easy knitting while I was, again, foggy from the cold..... wow. Any way, I know it probably doesn't look like it, but I did get some progress done on it, I think like two or three pattern repeats? I wasn't sure I wanted to continue it, but then I had the thought of 'it looks like dragon scales, not just honey comb' and now I love it lol. It's my dragon scale armor now.

and now! my birthday shawl!! (The Gaia Shawl) I only did the first bit on my birthday cause I was DETERMINED to get it started on the right day. I am loving this yarn and how it's working up, and I am really liking the little bit of the pattern I've worked at well. I'm not worried about how long it takes me cause my birthday shawl last year was being worked well into January. It'll be there when I feel good enough to work on it again. The only problem is that the pattern website keeps freezing.....

small yarn haul time!

the multi colored yarn is from one of my mom's friends actually, she has sheep and she goes through the entire process with it, and I got it from her 'booth' at the Heritage Days festival in Warsaw (which is no where near where I live). I have no idea what I want to make with it?? I'm thinking a hat and some socks maybe? it is a fingering weight yarn. Definitely the hat first, and then if I have enough yarn left over the socks. It's so soft and squishy, and I really love it.

and then the blues are for a project for my sister in law.... she kinda volunteered me for it, but it'll only take me a couple days at most. It's for a pixie from Harry Potter. The yarn is nice and soft, and I guess I'm looking forward to the challenge, but also she's just...... It's complicated.

If the plague ever makes a comeback, I'm locking my grandmother in her bedroom. Not for her safety, but for everyone else's. How she managed to avoid contracting covid before now I will never know, but she did get it recently and ended up in the hospital because of it.

I live with her. I had to be the one to pick her up from the hospital when she was released. The moment she got into my car was the moment she began refusing to wear a mask again even though she was told she needed to wear one around other people for a few days. Because she 'couldn't breathe' and it was 'too hot' and 'too uncomfortable'. And rather than stay in her room to avoid spreading it around the house, she wanted to be in the living room because the recliner was more comfortable for her to read in.

Despite the fact that I opted to wear a mask around the house, wore one in the car with her, minimized contact with her, and was taking as many precautions as a I could (like regularly wiping surfaces down with Clorox wipes because she's terrible about washing her hands and sneezes/coughs into them, instead of her elbow) since she refused to be careful...I managed to contract covid.

Thankfully I'm vaccinated so it didn't hit me as hard as it did her, but I still had to miss a few days of work and I spent two days with a fever that hovered between 102 and 103 degrees F. My grandmother doesn't understand why I'm upset with her, either. I tried to lay it out as nicely as I could but she just acted like I was picking on her for pointing out that she dismissed her doctor's orders and got me sick because she wouldn't be careful.

Today is my first day back at work and omg I haven't been this happy to be at work in years. (I have to wear a mask at work for the rest of the week even though I have little to no contact with other people, thanks to our work areas being spaced out. Definitely gonna be running my fan all week because wearing a mask is hot, but I'm following every single guideline I'm given. Because I don't want to get anyone else sick or give anyone here a reason to send me home.)

In other news, I did finish the sweater for my coworker's daughter! I finished it right before I got covid. Ends are all woven in, but it still needs to be blocked; I didn't want to handle it while I was sick so I'll block that this weekend once I'm in the clear. (I want to be especially cautious since the little girl has had some health scares this year. I think her immune system is fine, and she wouldn't be getting the sweater for at least another month anyway, but I would so much rather be careful. Her family has dealt with enough medical stuff this year.)

I ended up starting on a knitted blanket while I was sick, once the fever broke. Because I needed another WIP. I just really wasn't feeling like crocheting--which is what my sister's blanket is--or assembling a sweater, and all of my other WIPs are on tiny needles with light-weight yarn. I was not up for handling small stitches or knitting in the round. Or anything complicated since I kept dozing off.

But I've had some super bulky alpaca/polyester blend sitting in my stash for the last six years that really needs to get used up. I had originally gotten it to make a sweater but it's just scratchy enough that it would drive me nuts to wear it, and also I do not live in a climate where a sweater that bulky makes sense. There is, however, enough to make a nice knitted blanket out of it that I can gift my eternally freezing mother for Christmas this year. (There will not be money for gift-buying this year thanks to medical bills and a long overdue holiday visit to friends and family I haven't seen in thirteen years. But I have time, excessive amounts of yarn and fabric and other craft stuff, and the skills to make those things into thoughtful gifts.)

So I now also have a bulky blanket on needles. It's looking really good so far, and the pattern isn't hard at all. There are cables, but it's thick yarn, thick needles, and just simple front or back held cables. It's going to be the perfect project for late nights when I'm exhausted but insomnia/restless leg/my brain won't let me sleep.

I've also started on the mitts again. Well, a different pattern. I was planning on making two sets of fingerless gloves and this is the other pattern since I can use the same yarn I used on the sweater and hopefully finish off the ball (or at least use up the majority of what's left; the original skein was about 1000 yards and I know the sweater only used about a third of that).

Its definitely crafting crunch time for me if I want to get something done for everyone on my list for the holidays.

She was sitting across the aisle two rows in front of me and Samu, giving me a perfect view of her side profile.

Why haven't I mustered the courage to speak to her? It's nearly the end of our junior year!

Dammit, what's wrong with you, Miya Atsumu? You've never been so nervous about talking to a girl before! Heck, you have a whole fan club and you're surrounded by cheerleaders everywhere at volleyball matches!

I let out a huge groan and practically slammed my head into my desk. I whined once more as my eyebrows kept knitting (lol, I'm sorry, this is just so funny to me -Jo) themselves together into a frown.

"Why do you look like crap?" I didn't even need to raise my head to know that it was my younger twin speaking to me.

"Do you have any idea how disrespectful you are? I'm your older brother, ya piece of shit. OLDER BROTHER!" I practically yelled. Yeah, he was pissing me off.

The girl of my dreams was so near, yet so far. And now, I had an irritating younger twin to deal with.

"Look, man. You've been pining after Y/N since spring break. Literally everyone knows that you like her. You got so shy after she came by the gym last month! The Miya Atsumu I know doesn't get shy in front of girls!” My annoying brother nagged.

But, his words did get me to think again.

If I actually got as nervous as what Samu had described-

Holy shit. That means that it's actually true. I really do like her.

Samu plopped down into his chair next to mine just as we heard a voice a distance away, groaning in frustration.

“Dang it, I’m out of yarn. Again! This is the third time this week! And this was supposed to be a gift for the other girls at our extra curricular!” It was Y/N complaining to her desk buddy, Isaji Miyuki.

Out of yarn?

“We can drop by the craft store tomorrow after school, if you’d like?” Miyuki asked. Y/N shook her head.

“I can't tomorrow. My mom’s preparing my favourite dish for my birthday and I've gotta get home fast!" Y/N responded excitedly.

Whipping my head back to Samu, I elbowed him. Hard. He glared at me.

“Samu, I got it! You go ahead later after school. I've gotta run to the store real quick,” I whisper-yelled to my twin.

He looked at me suspiciously, before rolling his eyes and grumbling. “Sure, whatever."

Y/N’s POV:

A loud chorus of “Happy birthday, Y/N!” greeted me as I stepped into my classroom. Warmth bloomed in my chest as I smiled at my classmates.

I thanked everyone as I made my way over to my seat, noting that the infamous Miya Twins had yet to arrive this morning.

Jo nudged me with her elbow and gave me a pointed look.

“What?” I asked.

“Looks like someone’s disappointed that her favourite twin isn't here yet,” she teased. I flushed.

Was I that obvious?

“I don’t know what you're talking about,” I huffed.

“Oh, speak of the devils,” she murmured under her breath. Curiously, I looked up to see Osamu shuffling past my table, shooting me a small smile and another birthday greeting.

I mouthed a thanks to Osamu, just as his brother stopped right by my desk.

“H-hey, good morning, L/N-san!”

“Morning, Atsumu-kun,” I replied brightly.

A boyish grin was plastered on his face. He seemed to think for a second before he quickly reached back and pulled out a brown paper bag from behind him.

“Happy birthday, Y/N. I hope you like it!” Atsumu said in a rush, holding out the paper bag in front of me. I noticed that it was from the same store I usually bought my yarn from.

Before I could thank him, the bag was pushed into my hands as he scrambled back to his seat. His ears were tinged pink.

Aww, he's adorable.

Miyuki nudged my side again and eagerly gestured for me to open the bag.

Carefully, I pried open the brown bag and peered inside. In it were five balls of yarn, their colours similar to the ones I had been using for my current project. There was also a little note placed in the bag. I took it out and read it silently to myself.

Happy birthday, Y/N! I hope that you like the little gift from me :) I'm not exactly good with words but I really hope we can be friends, and I'm sure whatever you're making this time will be just as adorable as you are. Happy birthday again and I hope you have a great day too. - Miya Atsumu

His sloppy handwriting was unmistakable on that small piece of paper and I giggled to myself as I read each line again. My heart was palpitating at an incredible pace and I felt heat crawl up my neck at his words. I heard a tiny squeal from Miyuki as she kept looking back and forth between me and Atsumu.

"He's looking at you! Go say thanks!" Miyuki and Jo urged. Hesitantly, I looked back at the yarn and the note.

Then, I finally found the courage to thank him.

Atsumu's POV:

What if I had heard her wrongly? What if I got her the wrong coloured yarn? What if my note was too cheesy? I don't wanna weird her out! Oh no, she's gonna think I'm weird now-

I felt my soul leave my body as I watched her take out the note and giggle softly.

Oh man, she's too cute for my heart to handle...

My heart seemed to stop as I saw her stand up and make her way towards my table.

Oh my God, she's coming closer. Oh shit, I might collapse halfway, dammit-

"Thank you so much for the yarn, Atsumu! And sure, I'd love to be friends with you," she said, dipping her head slightly with an unmistakable blush on her cheeks.

So. Damn. Cute.

I coughed, and spouted out, "Y-yer welcome, I hope you like it!" I could feel my face turning red.

The next few moments were pretty awkward. Both of us endured three seconds of silence before we both started to speak again.

"I was wonderin' if-"

"Actually, do you wanna-"

We spoke at the same time and looked at each other for a good two seconds before I heard my brother snicker from beside me. I shot him a glare and continued.

"Sorry, uh... I was wondering if you would like to come to my next game- OW! I mean, our next game, next Friday evening?" I asked, giving my brother a side-glare for slapping my back before turning back to Y/N.

Y/N's eyes glimmered, she stumbled over her words and finally squeaked out, “Yeah! Of course! Th-that's what friends d-do, right?"

I heaved a sigh of relief. “Great! Awesome! I'll see ya there!"

She bowed again before scurrying back to her seat where Miyuki and Jo were waiting for her with wide eyes.

I collapsed back into my seat as my brother snickered yet again.

"What are ya laughing at, asshat?" I snapped.

He slapped his hand over my mouth so hard I nearly flung backwards and out of my chair.

“SHUT UP, YOU PIG-,” he grimaced.

Class begun soon after, but my mind was still reeling at the fact that Y/N would be coming to my next game. She's gonna see how great I am on the court and she'll definitely wanna be my girlfriend after that! I thought, daydreaming about her yet again.

I already couldn't wait for the game. Stupid Samu, of course I'll get her to be my girlfriend, just you wait.

Okay, I've been meaning to post this a while and it's definitely very late, because it's now two months past Christmas.

In December @misssquidtracy put out a call saying she was in need of a Gordon themed stocking. I was nervous but looked up some patterns and offered my services. She accepted and I spent half an hour comparing colours and wools at my usual wool joint. With Christmas coming up fast I was thankful for my annual leave so I could focus on knitting.

The start of the pattern was simple, although I was using slightly smaller needles so I added a few more stitches to make it the right size. I ended up needing to use the magic loop technique, which I was dreaded as I normally get a loose ladder in my work. The pattern works from the top with ribbing, which I made one small but obvious stitch error. After much indecision, I grabbed a crochet hook, deliberately dropped a stitch and undid that part so I could fix it. This worked so well I couldn't tell where the mistake had been. After that it was a few more centimetres of rib I switched colour and was left started the garter stitch.

I knitted until I got to when I where I wanted to start the design. This is where I realised I needed a plan. Counting rows I produced a spreadsheet with a grid which I could use to make my design. This was harder than I expected and I'm glad I did an experimental square. (I realise after that red and blue were Alan's colours and seeing a four in them was weird)

This turned out great, and a few little tweaks and I started on the actual stocking.

Working in the round I found it tricky and unfortunately my floats were a little tight causing the four to pucker. It frustrated me immensely and now that I've learnt the duplicate stitch technique for another project, it would now be my first choice over this. Trying to ignore it I continued down, using a strand of red wool to mark the afterthought heel.

By the time I got to the blue toe it was really starting to take shape. The red thread was then removed and I picked up the stitches and added the heel. After all that it was time to sew in all the loose threads. I spent a few hours stitching around the four, trying to flatten it out and tidy it up the best I could. Lastly I cut some ribbon (I had a nice blue lying around) and stitched in a loop so it could be hung up.

Finishing the project an achievement, even if I wasn't totally happy with how the four turned out. I tried so hard with the magic loop technique and it paid off. I managed to avoid the usual loose line in the work, which I was over the moon about. The final thing was wrapping it up and sending it off to Squiddy. She adores it and it even arrived in time for Christmas!

So here's the finished Gordon Tracy themed stocking!

I was going to stop there but I now wanted a set of Thunderbirds themed stockings of my own (abet smaller ones). Also the stocking used less wool than it said it would so I had some left over. Even though it was after Christmas, I found two possible patterns for my mini-stockings. The first one I tried, I modified (I seem to modify patterns a lot) to use the same heel as in the big one. I finished it but it wasn't what I wanted.

The second pattern was perfect, so I made what I could of my set.

I now had a yellow and blue stocking that was cute, but I knew someone who would appreciate it more. So I slipped it into an envelope, along with a yellow one of the second pattern, and off it went to Squiddy. She now has a set of three Gordon themed stockings in three different sizes!

Overall, this whole project was a resounding success. 😀

I've been off of tumblr for almost two months, it started as kind of a challenge to see what would change, but then i liked it

I spent the time i would've spent here actually doing things: i started knitting and crocheting, came back to drawing and studied a lot.

I also got covid and think i might actually have ocd (my psychologist said it's not an actual diagnosis yet, but that means it could be). also she left for a new job with just a week's notice because of some problems, so now I'm really scared to meet the new one next week, mainly because it took a long time to trust the other one and i don't want to (nor know if i could) start all over again.
