I’m at work tomorrow so here’s the soppy message. I’ve had the collages ready for a month 😂 Three years ago tomorrow, we brought home who would eventually become the best friend I could ever have. I felt like I’d never love a dog like I loved Nemo but, as you can see, I clearly do. I wouldn’t trade her for the world and tonight, she’s snuggling up on my bed after sharing my sausage roll and quavers. She’s such a personality, bouncing around and being a tinker - taking the socks right off your feet. Then, despite Maggie’s rocky start, she’s shown Maggie nothing but love and compassion - and teaching her how to play, which results in a ripped-up bed. And let’s not forget how sassy she is and her 2018 champion title as 3rd best rescue in SESKU and 1st in best eyes - I’m so proud. And on a serious note, she hasn’t failed to pick up on my mental health. She could tell I was sick in college and the days it was bad, she would cling to me. I do praise her for helping me get through those days and when I have my bad days now, she’s right by my side. Mum shouts when people call their dogs their babies but I can barely go a full shift without missing her, I went away for the weekend and by the second day I was close to crying because I missed her. KORNGOLD Autor: MACIEJ PATERCZYK "Czy jest przyjemniejszy zapach niż ten unoszący się przy kartkowaniu książek? Może zapach kawy? Papierosów? O tak, papierosów! Sesku? Krwi? Tak, zapach krwi jest najpiękniejszy." Troszkę nie rozumiem takich słabych ocen tej powieści, ale z gustami nie będę dyskutowała. Mi się podobało. Początek był wręcz hipnotyzujący (zarąbiasty pomysł snucia opowieści starej Krwawej Niny - serio klimacik pierwsza klasa!), potem troszkę poziom atmosfery spada z grozowej na rzecz kryminalnej prawie, to jednak całość, choć chwilami przegadana i wymagająca, jest naprawdę na plus. Miłośnikom Starej Słaboniowej i na wskroś polskiej opowieści, z elementami przedwiecznych tajemnic polecam. I choć nie jestem zwolenniczką typowej polskowatości i historii, to jednak jestem fanką tego wampirzego snucia i pomysłu "wewnętrznego monologu." Szkoda, że nie było go więcej. I chyba mam wrażenie, że będzie kontynuacja? *** "Do zniszczonej po wojnie Warszawy powoli powraca życie. Wśród ruin i zgliszczy dochodzi do serii tajemniczych zbrodni, a ludzie szepczą między sobą, że to sprawka wampira. Jakub Korngold, łowca wampirów, podąża jego śladem i trafia do taniego hotelu robotniczego. Hotel, z zaminowaną piwnicą i przerwami w dostawach prądu, skrywa mroczną tajemnicę. Korngold, chcąc złapać krwiożerczą istotę, będzie musiał ją rozwiązać. Nie słyszeliście o Korngoldzie? Nic dziwnego. Komunistyczna bezpieka i Klub Wampirów zrobiły wiele, by jego imię zostało zapomniane… To wielowątkowa i wielopoziomowa powieść o pojedynku wampirzycy Niny, dzięki której poznajemy całą historię, i łowcy wampirów. Monopolies in Meat: Endangering Workers

“Since mid-March, panic buying and supply disruptions have sent the price of meat soaring for wholesalers and consumers. Beef sales were up more than 75 percent over last year, and the average consumer price for a pound of ground beef in mid-April was more than a dollar higher than it had been just one week before. Meanwhile, ranchers say the prices slaughterhouses will pay for cattle have fallen 35 percent or more since the start of the pandemic. That means meatpackers make around $550 in profits on a head of cattle, while average profits for ranchers are around $25. ...  The situation would be different, ranchers and advocates say, if beef and pork producers had any means of challenging the meatpacking monopolies.”

“The real solution ... is to use the country’s antitrust laws to disassemble concentrated power in every corner of the industry. ... The scope and severity of the COVID-related disruptions have created at least some push for deconcentration. Two senators, Republican Josh Hawley from Missouri and Wisconsin Democrat Tammy Baldwin, last week asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate concentration and anti-competitive practices in the meatpacking industry. Were the FTC to find wrongdoing, the feds could try to break up Smithfield and the other vertically integrated processors. Any such result, however, would be years away. Until then, small-scale slaughterhouses will keep working longer hours and adding shifts to keep up with this sudden and welcome demand. They’re skeptical it will last. Once the virus is held at bay, people will go back to the box stores. The giant processing plants will whir back to life and the country’s meat industry—concentrated, exploitative, and fragile—will be restored.”
