i want to write yan batfam so bad like u can suck my dick idc, smh imagine batfam with isekai reader who's knows nothing—like, the empty void, eternal darkness but with a few specks of light type of nothing—about the dc verse. the only thing girliepop (gender neutral) knows about the verse is none other than batman himself, but even then, the stuff they know is limited.
like, their knowledge is so limited it's practically useless. they also only recently learned about the batfam, and all the stuff they've learned about the fam are just shit from random videos they saw on the internet, some of which are just random headcanons from ppl (that they stupidly thought was canon, but like, who could blame them?)
one thing they are sure of tho, are everyone's identities—identities they found on a random video, on a random tuesday, before their death (obvi).
they then proceed to just. ignore the fuck out of canon and just live their life normally in gotham cause they have virtually no ties to any prominent character in dc (that they know of) and they know that their acquired knowledge would not help them cuz they have no ulterior motive whatsoever except for maybe surviving till their fifties (and also maybe they were born in a crime ridden city much like gotham, not as bad, but close, and the whole getting mugged on a day-to-day basis was pretty much the norm both in reader's past and present life—cause god forbid the city they were born into wasn't filled to the brim with crime)
and they do a spectacular job at it, at first.
reader makes a few friends here and there, they have a stable(-ish) job that doesn't pay so bad, they have a (rat infested) apartment, and it was all going great. until they find out that one of their friends was actually a villain, a major one at that, and they've caught the eye of a few vigilantes who either:
a. think they're the victim of the big, bad villain (aka they were tricked and/or manipulated into conversing with said villain)
b. think ur conspiring with said villain for a scheme to endanger gotham and her ppl
or c. think u know nothing that the villain was the villain (the truth, but was quickly scratched off of the list because it'd be impossible not to know said villain's face, like it's physically impossible not to know cuz of how prominent this villain is so they think it's one of the two first options—but reader rlly just didn't know cuz they were too busy trying to survive in their ratty apartment to pay attention to stuff like that, and they also could not comprehend the idea of these fictional characters actually being real and pushed it to the very back of their mind)
so yeah... finally squirted the brain juice. will expand tho cuz there's more, trust 🤞

same thing applies to artists. if you have the time and capacity to share something you like, then you have the time to tell the person who made said thing all about it. like, don't get me wrong, telling other ppl about art or fics ur interested in isn't a bad thing—it's just that when it comes to fanmade works like fanart and fics; the creator needs you to actually interact with their work, especially if they're not expecting any monetary gain. liking, commenting, sharing, or reblogging directly from the creator not only boosts their visibility but also validates their effort.
A writer friend told me something that broke my heart a little bit today; they're going to quit publishing their fanfic.
My instant thought was that they had been trolled or attacked or that something terrible had happened in their life because this person is so passionate about their writing. It wasn't any of that. Engagement with their works has been going down, as it has for many of us. Comments are like gold dust a lot of the time, and just looking through the historical comment counts on old fics on ao3 demonstrates this trend very clearly. It was not simply the comments dropping off which caused them to decide to stop posting, however.
My friend came across a discord server for their fandom (I should point out here that their fandom interest and mine diverged a couple of years ago, we stay in touch but don't currently read each other's posts because I'm not into their fandom and they would rather gouge their eyes out with a wooden spoon than read anything Star Wars) and specifically to share fic in that fandom. They joined, because we all love a good fic rec, only to discover that their latest multichapter fic, which has almost no comments and very few kudos, is being hotly discussed in this server as one of the best stories ever. Not one of these people has bothered to say this to them on the fic. When they asked, none of participants could see the point in telling the author of the fic they apparently loved so much that they love it.
This discovery has absolutely destroyed my friend's love of sharing fic. They share because they love seeing other people's enjoyment, and fic writers do that through comments and kudos/reblogs/likes because we don't get paid. There is no literary critic writing a blog post/article about how amazing the story is for us to copy and keep/frame. There is no money from royalties. All we have are the words of the people reading our works.
Those people on that server could have taken five minutes of the time they spent gushing about how amazing my friend's story was to other people and used it to tell the one person guaranteed to want to hear that praise how much they loved it. They could have taken a moment to express their opinion to the person who spent hours upon hours plotting, writing, editing, and posting those chapters. Instead, they deprived my friend of thing that keeps them sharing their writing, and in the process have killed their love of it. My friend now feels used and unmotivated.
I won't be sharing a link to their fic, they said I could share their experience but not their identity. I know they plan to post one final chapter. I know they intend to express their hurt at being excluded from the praise for the thing they created, and I know they intend to announce that as a consequence they will not be posting for a long while, if at all.
So please, I beg you, don't hide your love of a story from the writer. It's just about the only thing we have.

omg yesssss I love the raven consort, but I find myself a bit more inclined to like the apothecary diaries more because of her self-awareness! while mcs with little to no regard for all the mechanics of being the or being in the company of the upper class (in ancient times) are pretty entertaining and perhaps relatable because of their more modern thinking, I do enjoy it when characters of a certain era, and of a certain status act more accordingly.
not to say that the ideologies and beliefs of ancient times should be internalized (or brought back) of course, it's just that when a character raised in a certain environment doesn't act like they were raised in that environment, it ticks me off. no hate of course! sometimes the way they act makes them who they are, the fact that some characters have completely different idealogies and beliefs from the environment they were raised in makes them pretty interesting.
but I do like maomao more lol. it's prolly a preference but whatever. anyway thx to op cause I DID NOT know how to articulate my thoughts before this post ong
I've been watching both Raven of the Inner Palace and the new season of The Apothecary Diaries lately. It's obvious why people compare the two series, but one big difference I've noted is the protagonists' social awareness.
The semi-titular apothecary isn't a social savant, but she knows her place and how to keep it. Maomao is a lowborn servant surrounded by noble consorts and high-ranking eunuchs and the like. If she annoys them, her life will get harder; if she pisses them off badly enough, her life might end.
Tumblr media
She acts accordingly. Maomao doesn't always do the socially appropriate thing, but she needs some unusual stress before she snaps.
By contrast, the semi-titular Raven Consort is a mixture of sheltered, isolated, and naive. There's a lot she just doesn't understand about the "proper" way for a noble consort like her to act. She didn't understand how giving Jiujiu something the Emperor gave to her could be insulting to either of them, let alone both. And even when she's not overtly oblivious like that, she's relatively informal and headstrong, even in the presence of the Emperor.
Tumblr media
Luckily, she is the Raven Consort. On one hand, she's isolated from any schemers who could exploit her political incompetence. On the other hand, her status is grand enough that she can get away with more; even the Emperor is not that high above her station. No one would behead her for breaking a mirror.
Of course, she spent most of her childhood in the palace, being raised/trained as the new Raven Consort. Meanwhile, Maomao spent her entire childhood in the red-light district, learning how to be a skilled commoner while the rich and powerful tower above you. Of course they would have different relationships to power.
