i don’t know if anything will beat the feeling i had during april 2020. i was heavily hyperfixated on tss and especially the creativitwins, and then thomas dropped the roman playlist. to this day 3 years later i still think about it

second song on that playlist was wonderboy by tenacious d and i was immediately like ‘haha that sounds like that’s about remus. cool how they team up in the end’ but oh well, i didn’t think that much about it in that moment. the song can easily be about virgil too

i’m vibing to the rest of the songs and then humility by gorillaz comes on and. did the song straight up say twin??? bro that fucking song is about remus. that song is about remus there is no way around it.

i’m not smart enough to directly analyze the songs (plenty of people have already done so. here’s my favorite one) but all i can say is holy fuck yippie doodle this shit still makes me ballistic.

i mean in the series all roman seems to show is hate for remus!! looking at remus is like looking into a funhouse mirror, he’s literally his biggest insecurity, his biggest fear. and yet, (correct me if i’m wrong) i don’t even think there’s a song on there that even implies his hatred of remus. the playlist is all about how he wants to be free of his morality restrictions..

idek man. if the day comes in 2050 when the creativitwins reconcile i will be there in the first row.

oh and also. fun fact about the wonderboy song (and also the entire roman playlist)? thomas and joan purposefully made roman’s playlist into 5 sections: i want songs, character establishment, rising action, climax, and falling action. they didn’t specify how exactly these sections were split up* but that doesn’t even matter. wonderboy is the SECOND song in the playlist, meaning it’s definitely an I Want song. do with this information what you will

*ok if you want my opinion, theres 20 songs, and 5 sections. the math would show that each section would consist of 4 songs, and i think this definitely holds up with the vibes of the songs, too.

conclusion: ieirjrwndijekwfowhhdeh idk. roman and remus are the twins ever and the only main reason i still care about sanders sides after all this time.

i wish that instead of complaining about gorillaz not making new music that fits the themes of past albums people would watch any 2017 or later concert & realize theyre still very much about the old themes, they're just also adding on new themes w each phase

they consistently play last living souls, dirty harry, kids with guns, rhinestone eyes, saturnz barz, don't get lost in heaven & demon days...some of my favorite concerts are from 2021 because they explicitly play tranz in reference to trans people, & i still don't see how warnings against cult ideologies are unimportant considering how rampant they are

i wish there was a transcript of what ace and 2d's interaction was going to be for the intro of the tranz mv. like that would add SO MUCH to ace's relationship with 2d as well as gorillaz as a whole.

GOD RIGHT?!?! you can't say "we had a script planned for tranz" and then NOT release it im rattling the bars of my cage begging and pleading for it to be released it would add SO much needed characterization. like... as much as I love Ace and think his inclusion is fun it feels INCREDIBLY wasted and yeah they couldn't help it, budget stuff but like? I DONT understand at all why the band barely talked about him at least and why, oh why, he didn't get a single written interview. THAT WOULDVE ADDED *SO* MUCH and more than made up for him not speaking. but we didn't get that, we barely got anything. it's such a shame too, he's such a fun and wacky character and I would've loved to see how he interacts with the band and how they interact back and how his life is and what he's like these days... as fun as it is to speculate based on the little clues it would be nice to finally KNOW someday it's frustrating how that awesome premise really didn't amount to much

There are two Gorillaz songs I’ve always thought could reference gender critical sentiment, despite their audience.  The first one is, appropriately, Tranz:

Do you look like me, do you feel like me Do you turn into your effigy?

The “look like me/feel like me” is self explanatory but the “turn into your effigy” part stands out.  A lot of trans people I see are clearly trying to emulate their idols.  Their effigies.

The second one is Momentary Bliss:

It makes me sick to think you ain't happy in your skin

Oh, you need to change your face You're getting sold, it's such a waste Y'know, we could do so much better than this Swimming in pools of momentary bliss

This one’s an aggressive body/self positivity song.  “Society is trying to sell you your own self and it’s SICKENING.  That bliss/euphoria is only momentary, let’s do better!”

hello, what are your thoughts on the new gorillaz album? also, what are the essential songs from them for you? ty.

cracker island title is an absolute BANGER (my most played song last year lol, it's also very fun to see in concert) and silent running is my favourite. then possession island then tarantula, oil, new gold. as a whole it doesn't particularly stand out from other albums but I've been listening to it a lot anyway because it's still the sort of music I like best. tired influencer and baby princess do kind of suck though so i skip them.

my essential gorillaz songs other than the obvious (all the singles, all of demon days) are tranz, souk eye, she's my collar, momentary bliss, doyathing, deja vu, empire ants, désolé. my fav non-dd album is the now now

Weeb anon returns :'D : Samurai Flamenco wedding suit cards in the spinoff app is probably the most infamous example, but there was also Lucky Star (wedding scenario official art), I think Hibike Euphonium and a couple more yuri anime I'm not caught up on (girls in wedding dresses are a lot more popular, wonder why :P ), Kaworu and Shinji from Evangelion had wedding ring merch and wedding outfits for merch… I'm sure there's more of it though, Japan is always on top of its subtle fanservice merch.

Interesting what you're saying though! Again, might just be me coping, but I honestly feel like Jamie and Damon could crack at some point, if only to spite bigots, since the world is pretty ugly these days and they're punks at heart (not the correct technical term… but y'kno what I mean lol). Kinda like MCR used to make out on stage just to piss off some crowds. I think their perspective has definitely shifted over the years, especially since they're getting a lot of younger LGBTQ fans and they know it. Damon's out there dancing with a pride flag, singing "are you tranz like me?" and kissing Seye in all fairness haha. But they probably don't want to undermine 20 years' worth of work and ending up getting asked about 2doc every interview or sideline Noodle and Russ even more than they already are. I dunno, don't wanna play a mind reader. TLDR: I'm not starry-eyed thinking it'll ever happen, but I see a small possibility of them being fine with it now more than ever, whereas there was no chance a few years ago.

Ahhh okay! I'm learning a lot here. I'm very basic with my anime/manga consumption and really haven't ventured out of the shonen genre....ever idt lol. Up until recently I had only read or watched 4 different series. Thanks for sharing what you know!

I guess I'm skeptical of them not because I think they're uncomfortable with the idea, but moreso because I don't think they care enough about really developing the lore and characters. I also don't think the ship aligns with either of their personal, for lack of a better word, "headcanons" about 2D and Murdoc. Of the two, I think Jamie would be more likely to go, "fuck it" and let the writers do whatever. He already kind of does this - since P4, it's been the writers who have been the source of all the 2Doc hints we get in interviews, tiktoks, etc. Afaik, Jamie isn't involved in that.

Damon, as far as I know, doesn't seem to have any semblence of shipper vision. During P5, he said in an interview that 2D was happy Murdoc was in jail, and wanted him to stay there forever haha. And most recently, if I remember correctly, he said he didn't care about the PR side of Gorillaz at all, which I assume included the character interviews, lore updates via social media etc.. All of which he is entitled to feel! But I bring them up to support my impression that he isn't a shipper, and I wouldn't expect him to go to bat for 2Doc if he wanted to make a statement. But I might have missed some things, so if you or anyone reading this knows of any counter-evidence, I'm open to hearing it.

And that's true that canon 2Doc would probably be the final nail in the coffin for Russel and Noodle's relevance. And that would be a bummer, ngl. I'd feel bad for my friends who are fans of them.

That all being said, I think you bring up some good point, and ia that Jamon are both supportive of the fans and LGBT community, and are comfortable being open about that. But does that overlap with their respective interpretations of 2D and Murdoc? Idk. I think if I was placing a bet, I'd put money on Jamie giving Noodle a girlfriend before any ship between the guys. But my main theory is that management will eventually see that 2Doc is popular and accepted by enough of the fandom that it will help them trend lol. But I'm also not expecting anything...but it's fun to conjecture about.

We'll see how this post has aged after 20 years 🤣

because i have far too much time on my hands, i thought it would be fun to make a poll for gorillaz songs, pitting them against each other in a fight to the death until the one true best gorillaz song emerges victorious.

this poll is made up of 150 songs total, comprised of every song from the main 7 albums, as well as the fall, d-sides, some songs from g-sides, and the various EPs and side songs that have been released throughout the years. it does not, however, include laika come home, or any live or remixed versions of songs already featured on the poll.

21. part of canon you think is overhyped

back in Gorillaz phase 5, I will never understand the hype for Ace and him getting so much praise! sure, people are excited it’s a crossover and it's literally a character from the PowerPuff Girls but other than popping a basketball and a looped animation of him playing bass from Tranz, he doesn't seem to do anything. but I get it he's filling in and just tagging along helping out. not trying to replace him from Murdoc because his friends need help. my point is that a little exposure would have been nice!

I wouldn’t mind the inclusion of Ace if he had more of a presence in this phase. wish he got a speaking role but eh, copyright thing is a bitch.

22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores

I feel like most Gorillaz fans have either forgotten about this song or don't know that it exists: Gorillaz - Latin Simone

such a beautiful song, the fact that so many people dislike it (enough to the point that the performances during Demon Days Live received little to no fanfare from the audience) is an absolute shame! I mean the song is dark and is kind of about drugs maybe... like, maybe the subject is really strung out because of drugs. its much more open to interpretation than some other songs is all!

I also enjoy the sound of the trumpet in the background.

I'm glad they ultimately went with the bass we saw in tranz bc it just looks better and pops more BUT i also really really love that he has a pink bass. Like you wouldn't expect ppg ace to willingly embrace something boldly and loudly pink but gorillaz ace totally did. i like to think pink is a subtle symbol of his growth :^}
