Pacific or Western Pond Turtle (Actinemys marmorata), family Emydidae, California
Vulnerable, due to habitat destruction/degradation and introduction of invasive species (like the Red-eared Slider).
This species was extirpated from Canada. It once ranged into British Colombia.
This is the only species of NATIVE freshwater turtle still found in California. (Other species have been introduced.)

Beast of Busco
Hello, it's Aidyn! I'm here to talk about Beast of Busco.
The Beast of Busco was said to be a large snapping turtle that weighed over 500 pounds. This large animal was first spotted in 1898, living in a seven acre lake near a farm located in Churubusco, Indiana. The farmer who saw it did tell others but decided to drop the matter.
In 1948 two local men went fishing at the lake. While there they claimed to have seen the large turtle. The owner of the land at the time also claimed to have seen it as well. He spent months trying to catch it. He went as far as draining the lake, still no luck.
Before the lake was drained over two hundred people came to see the beast. All two hundred people claimed to have seen the snapper come up and eat a duck in one bite. In honer of the first person seeing the turtle, the best was named Oscar.
Now let's talk about what kind of snapper "Oscar" was. To those who are not from the USA or don't know anything about turtles, there are three kinds of snapping turtles. The common snapping turtle, the suwannee alligator snapping turtle, and the alligator snapping turtle.
There was no he was a common snapper. Theses guys only weigh up to 45 pounds. So way too small. The suwannee snapper only get up to 198.4 pounds, still too small. Then there is the alligator snapper, who can get as big as 220 pounds in captivity. While in the wild, the largest was 249 pounds. Still small but much closer to 500+ pound Oscar.
So there is a high chance that Oscar was an alligator snapping turtle. Now we will talk about if an alligator snapping turtle could get that big. And how do animals get big? By eating! Alligator snapping turtles eat both animals and plants. They eat fish, small birds and anything else they can get a hold of. To keep a big turtle like that alive, you need big prey. Eating ducks isn't going to be enough.
Native fish to Indianian are, catfish, crappies, largemouth bass, muskie, northern pike, sunfish, and walleye. Plenty of these fish get large enough to feed this big turtle. Sadly seven acres is too small for northern pike and muskies. Any other fish can and stay at a healthy population as well.
Now we need to talk about how long they can live. An alligator snapping turtle in the wild can live up to forty-five years in the wild. Though on average it's twenty-three years. So if we subtract 1949 with 1898, we would get 51. That would make Oscar over 51 years old, as he was already an adult when he was first seen. It takes them to eleven to three-teen years to become adults. The largest snapper caught was already six-teen years old.
So could the Beast of Busco exist? There is a chance that he did and moved lakes as most turtles do. Though I don't think he was over five hundred ponds. At lest three hundred pounds at max. After all people like to get a little crazy when they talk about something existing.
This is Aidyn and I'll see you guys on the next hunt!

Life-threatening storm surges are expected to hit Florida's Gulf Coast this week with the arrival of Hurricane Milton, which was upgraded early Monday into a Category 4 hurricane over the southern Gulf of Mexico.
The storm first strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane by 7 a.m. and by 9 a.m. ET rapidly intensified into a Category 4, the National Hurricane Center said.
Data from Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicated Milton has estimated maximum sustained winds of 150 mph.
The storm is forecast to make landfall Wednesday evening in Florida, which along with the wider southeastern United States continues to recover from the impact of Hurricane Helene. Widespread evacuation orders are likely across Florida.
As many as 15 million people are under flood watches across the Florida Peninsula and 11 million are at risk for tropical tornadoes tomorrow and Wednesday.
Milton has already gone through multiple rounds of rapid intensification — including 65 mph in 24 hours. On Sunday at 8 a.m. ET, it was a 60-mph tropical storm.
On the current track, Milton is forecast to reach peak intensity Tuesday morning. However, it is forecast to weaken as it approaches landfall, which would be late Wednesday between 6 p.m. ET and midnight as a strong Category 3.
Milton’s greatest risk is storm surge. While it’s not clear yet exactly where the center of the hurricane will make landfall, the worst surge will be just south of the center and places could see 8- to 12-feet storm surges.
The hurricane center issued a storm surge warning early Monday for Florida's Gulf Coast from Flamingo on the southern tip to the mouth of the Suwannee River, including Tampa Bay. A hurricane watch is in place along the same coastline, from Chokoloskee near Everglades City, to the Suwannee River, while a tropical storm watch is in place further west to Indian Pass.
"A Storm Surge Watch means there is a possibility of life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline," the agency said.
Milton will also dump more rain, including up to 15 inches across portions of the Florida Peninsula and Keys through Wednesday night, making flash flooding likely.
As of 9 a.m. ET, Milton was about 150 miles west of Progreso, Mexico, and about 735 miles west-southwest of Tampa.
Tumblr media
The Mexican government has issued a hurricane warning for the Yucatan Peninsula coast from Celestun to Rio Lagartos.
"On the forecast track, Milton is forecast to move near or just north of the Yucatan Peninsula today and Tuesday, then cross the eastern Gulf of Mexico and approach the west coast of the Florida Peninsula by Wednesday," the hurricane center said in its 7 a.m. forecast.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis told a news conference Sunday that an around-the-clock operation to clear debris and fallen trees from Helene was underway ahead of Milton's arrival, to minimize the threat from flying objects. He said Milton is expected to make landfall in Hillsborough or Pinellas county Wednesday evening and pre-emptively issued an emergency declarations for 51 counties.
Some areas are set to officially order evacuations Monday, including the coastal city of Anna Maria, south of Tampa, where a mandatory order begins at midday. Pinellas County has begun mandatory evacuations for long-term care facilities.
However, state officials are stressing that people can leave without an order. “Have a plan, execute the plan,” DeSantis told the news conference. “You certainly can leave now. You don’t have to wait to get an evacuation order.”
Polk County, to the east of Tampa, has published a list of shelters, including three pet-friendly ones.
Many schools and colleges will be shut: All public schools in Collier County are shut from Monday through Thursday.
The National Weather Service office of Tampa Bay warned that coastal Gulf counties such as Sarasota, Pinellas and Lee counties, should plan for “catastrophic wind damage.”
“Act now to complete preparations before the wind becomes hazardous,” the office warned.
Milton is noteworthy for its very unusual path, approaching Florida from the west: Since 1850, only two storms have originated in the Gulf's Bay of Campeche and made landfall in Florida.
Further, for the first time on record, the Atlantic has three hurricanes simultaneously after September: Kirk, Leslie and Milton.
Hurricane Helene, which made landfall in Florida's Big Bend region Sept. 26, killed more than 230 people in six states.
Record-warm waters made more likely by climate change will fuel the rapid intensification of Milton as water in the Gulf of Mexico is 2-4 degrees Fahrenheit above average. Rapidly intensifying hurricanes are becoming more common in the warmer world.

Welcome to Our Pet Sitting Service
My husband and I both REALLY love animals – AKA “Our Babies”. I am choosing to go into the pet sitting business because of my love of animals and because there are not enough reputable sitters out there. During holidays, it is next to impossible to find suitable boarding for “Your Babies”. We will accommodate as many as we can safely care for. When you choose us, you’re simply choosing replicas of yourselves. Your babies are also our babies, and they will receive all the love you would normally give them, and then some.
We’re on call 24/7 should you have a sudden emergency where you need someplace to take your loved ones instead of having to wait until the morning hours. You can call as many times as you need to ask about your special children. We can FaceTime them so that you can see that they are happy and healthy.
In the past years I’ve volunteered with Suwannee County Animal Shelter under the leadership of Deputy Janice Hunter and I’ve fostered cats for Suwanee Paws Animal Clinic in Live Oak where Dr. Tracie Daniels resides as the clinic’s veterinarian.
Our vet of choice is Suwannee Oaks Animal Clinic. This is where we will go in an emergency, so we will need to have a file with them for your furry loved ones. They are the closest, which clearly makes them convenient. Plus, I trust them to care for your number #1 sons or daughters.
We have 8 acres, totally fenced, where they can run and play. Plus, we have a small fenced backyard where they can run and still be where we can see them. The choice will be yours as to where you want them to run and play.
We are offering a service no other sitter offers (I’m unaware of any). We will provide a taxi service for a nominal fee, where we will come and pick them up and return them back to you. This service works great for working parents as it eliminates all the drive time you would endure.” Another service we offer is Baths. We will gladly give your baby a bath, Dogs will receive a water bath, and Cats will receive a dry shampoo bath.
Please have your dog wearing a collar and be leashed upon arrival. We will need a current rabies vaccine certificate. We will feed your baby what they normally eat if they are staying for two or more days.
Give us a call – we’re waiting for all the hugs and kisses we’re gonna get.

When I first stumbled upon Tipper, quite literally, I was 19 and indulging in a weekend of experimental drug use. I had only been to 3 raves prior and decided to chase bassnectar down to camp bisco (2015). Tried acid for the first time on friday after melting off a fire dose of Molly I had bought on the mountain, and then Saturday I dumped a gram of sass into a water bottle for a homie and I. After ending up in the middle of the crowd for nectar and killing most of the water myself I started taking random bumps from every heady lookin guy I saw taking bumps with their crew. Ended up taking a bump of k from someone without really even knowing what it was or what I was in for.
Eventually I was so geeked I needed to remove myself from that crowd dry heaving and my vision even went black at one point. Made it to concession and got a water and some ice cold coke and took a seat. I ended up seeing someone limp get dragged out from the crowd as I watched the rest of the set from afar (in that moment I feel like that could have been me if I hadn’t gotten out). I felt like I had been through so much, walking back through the vendors I even bought my first pinecone that caught my (third)eye that I still treasure from this experience.
This is where I stumbled upon a crowd getting ready for something by the wave pool. Buzzing and ready for anything I sat tight for Jauz reconnected with the one homie I came with and at this point I realized the crowd was already getting ready for the next set. Tipper showed up and I soaked it all in. Had no idea who he was before then but suddenly wanted to know everything. His sound and the crowd had me hooked INSTANTLY. Young me didn’t even know what I was hooked on. I went off and chased that dragon for 5+ years before catching another tipper set at Secret Dreams LAST YEAR. Experiencing this my first time @ Suwannee was magical and I feel like my life had come full circle. My life isn’t perfect but I’ve come a long way. I’m so happy to be here.
I love you all ❤️

Florida's springs are in danger.
Nestle, who you will know as the corporation associated with horrific atrocities such as child slavery and the Flint Water Crisis, is making moves into Florida's waterways. They have just been granted a water-pumping permit in one of Florida's major waterways, the Suwannee River Water Management District.
Florida is a prime risk for climate change disasters, and is already seeing climate refugees at horrifying rates. We can't survive our water being poisoned like this.
Please, please help raise awareness of this. I know there's so much else going on, but countless Floridians are about to get their water contaminated worse than it already is.
You can visit the Florida Springs Council's website and Facebook page to learn more about how you can help.

i rly do think it’s so crazy how those “choose life” license plates you see everywhere that fund “crisis pregnancy centers” across the country are directly traceable to an organization that not only received millions directly from the second Bush administration but was also founded in Ocala Florida by the then-county commissioner Randy Harris, who relocated to Suwannee County after ethics board investigations into his multiple land deals and is now located at 13150 80th Terrace Live Oak FL 32060 reachable by phone at (386) 364-3400

Pink Sunset - May 2020 This is another image I took while waiting for the bats. The roofline is not a barn or a house, it is the bat house at Spirit of the Suwannee that holds over a hundred thousand bats. The bats are impressive, but so are some of the scenes that you can see while waiting for them. MWM

Remembering Harry T. Moore...
On Christmas night 1951, a bomb exploded under the Mims home of educator and civil rights activist Harry T. Moore. The blast was so loud it could be heard several miles away in Titusville.
Moore died while being transported to Sanford, the closest place where a black man could be hospitalized. His wife Harriette died nine days later from injuries sustained in the blast.
The couple celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary on the day of the explosion, and Harriette lived just long enough to see her husband buried. The Moore’s daughter, Juanita Evangeline Moore, was working in Washington, D.C. in 1951, and was scheduled to come home for the holidays on December 27th, aboard a train called the Silver Meteor. She did not hear the news about her family home being bombed until she arrived.
“When I got off the train in Titusville, I knew something was very, very wrong,” Moore said in an interview before her death in October 2015. “I had not turned on radio or television, so I didn’t know a thing about it until I got off the train. I noticed that my mother and father were not in front of all my relatives to greet me and they were always there.”
Moore was given the news by her Uncle George, who was home on leave from Korea.
“We got into his car and got settled, and the first thing I asked was ‘Well, where’s Mom and Dad?’ No one said anything for a while, it was complete silence. Finally, Uncle George turned around and he said ‘Well, Van, I guess I’m the one who has to tell you. Your house was bombed Christmas night. Your Dad is dead and your Mother is in the hospital.’ That’s the way I found out,” said Moore.
“I’ve never gotten over it. It was unbelievable.” Moore insisted on being taken to her parent’s home. The blast had done extensive damage. She saw a huge hole in the floor of her parent’s room, into which their broken bed had collapsed. Wooden beams had fallen from the ceiling. Shards of broken glass covered the bed in the room she shared with her sister, Peaches.
Harry T. Moore was born November 18, 1905, in Houston, Florida, located in Suwannee County. At age 19, Moore graduated with a high school diploma from Florida Memorial College where he was a straight-A student, except for a B+ in French. Other students called him “Doc” because he did so well in all of his classes.
Moore moved to Mims in 1925 after being offered a job to teach fourth grade at the “colored school” in Cocoa. He met Harriette Vida Sims. They married and had two daughters. Moore, his wife, and both of their daughters graduated from Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona.
As a ninth grade teacher and principal at Titusville Negro School, Moore instilled in his students a sense of pride and a solid work ethic. A popular and skilled educator, Moore was fired for attempting to equalize pay for African American teachers in Brevard County.
Moore led a highly successful effort to expand black voter registration throughout the state, dramatically increased membership in the Florida branch of the NAACP, worked for equal justice for African Americans, and actively sought punishment for those who committed crimes against them.
“I do remember a lot of NAACP work with my Dad from the time I was able to understand what was going on,” said Juanita Evangeline Moore. “I helped him a lot with his mailing lists. We had a one-hand operated ditto machine. He usually typed out the stencil and he ran off whatever material he wanted to send out.” Although the murders of Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore have never been solved, it is believed that members of the Ku Klux Klan from Apopka and Orlando planted the bomb on Christmas night.
Moore and his wife were killed 12 years before Medgar Evers, 14 years before Malcolm X, and 17 years before Martin Luther King, Jr., making them the first martyrs of the contemporary civil rights movement.
The Moore Cultural Complex in Mims features a civil rights museum and a replica of the Moore family home.

People ask me, “So is your wife musical?” I always reply, “No, she has to live with it.” Example: a few years ago we’re driving to Florida. She decides to spend a little time writing down the songs I sing or make up when randomly triggered by something I see, hear or think. I do this all the time and I’m usually not aware of it. Very OCD. I’m somewhere on the spectrum, no doubt. Anyway, she found this old list in her phone the other day and sent it to me: Memphis long distance information Memphis under ground Talahatchi bridge, Jim Laforte jumped off the Missouri bridge On the road again, shot my load again Louisiana woman Mississippi man We got married in a fever I'm going to Jackson Cop a feel when we hit mobile Way down upon the Suwannee river far far away Georgia on my mind You know what it means to miss New Orleans Clarksville and I'll meet you the station Love is out to get me Ummm ummm good that's what Campbell soups are, umm umm good (at Kansas City, Missouri) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjhXoGnObap/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
