Had an ask for a happy story during these moments we might not be feeling so happy. So… 💙💙
For the Moment
Her house out of commission, Scully receives an offer she can’t disregard.
2018
“Hey.”
“Hey, yourself,” Scully said, turning to smile at Mulder as he came out of the diner.
“So, what are your plans for the rest of the day?”
“My plans?” she asked with a chuckle. “Well, I was thinking of going home, taking a bath, maybe reading a book… oh wait… I can’t. What with the explosion at my place and all.”
“Huh… well…” he said, taking the keys from his pocket. “I suppose you could, but I think it might be awkward doing that, what with the group of men working there at the moment.”
“I don’t know,” she said, walking toward the car. “It would be nice to have admirers.”
“Hmm,” he hummed, his arm brushing against hers. “Never knew you to be an exhibitionist.” She tried to hide her smile, but failed miserably.
“Pretty sure I’d stay covered up. Although, all those men…” He scoffed and she smiled again, bumping his arm lightly. “What are your plans?”
“I have none. I’m free as a bird.”
“Must be nice,” she said, catching his eye as she walked around the back of the car toward the passenger door. When she heard the click of it unlocking, she opened the door and got inside.
“It is nice,” he said, getting in beside her.
“Hmm,” she hummed, putting on her seatbelt.
“You know,” he said, putting his seatbelt on as well. “You packed a bag as you can’t go back there for a few days.”
“I do know.”
“You don’t have a hotel booked.”
“Oh yeah, thanks for the reminder,” she said, unlocking her phone and opening her search engine. “I could find a place now.”
“Well, now,” he said, putting his hand over the screen and pushing her phone down gently. “That wasn’t what I was thinking.”
“No?” she asked, knowing full well what he had meant.
“I was simply stating,” he said, taking her phone and locking it before setting it in the cup holder. “Your bag is packed and in the back of this car. You mentioned taking a bath. Maybe reading a book.”
“I did,” she said, nodding slowly.
“I… well…” He turned his hands palms up and shrugged, giving her a lopsided smile. “You don’t need a hotel when all of those amenities are at our… my… place. Plus free use of all areas of the house and food.”
“You have food? Because last time I was there, all that was in the fridge was orange juice, iced tea, and condiments. I don’t know about the cupboards.”
“We could stop and get some things. Whatever you’d like, no charge to you.”
“Hmm,” she hummed, tapping a finger to her chin. “No charge for food. No charge for the room. And access to all areas of the house… this is sounding like a pretty deluxe deal.”
“It is.”
“Do you have WiFi?”
“The best WiFi,” he said with a grin.
“Chocolates on the pillow?”
“If that’s what you would like, I’ll speak to the manager.” He nodded, still grinning.
“I don’t think I can pass this up.”
“I don’t think you should.”
“Are there other patrons?”
“No,” he said, shaking his head, his fingers gently tapping the top of her thigh. “Just me.”
“Hmm,” she hummed, glancing at his lips and then looking back into his eyes. “So it’s a two bedroom?”
“It is, but…” He let out a gentle sigh, his fingers now swirling gently against her thigh. “The choice will be yours where you want to sleep.”
“I’ll take it,” she whispered. His swirling fingers paused and then he was squeezing her leg softly as he nodded. “I mean, the house is going to be expensive to repair, so getting freebies where I can will be helpful.”
“It will,” he agreed, moving his hand, but she caught it.
“And I’ll take whichever bed is the biggest.”
“What if that’s my bed? Or the one I sleep in, I mean?” he asked, their fingers intertwining.
“I’d be okay with that.” She smiled and he smiled back, squeezing her fingers gently.
“Okay,” he whispered before letting go of her hand to start the car. “Good.”
“Mmhmm,” she hummed, turning her head to look out the window.
They stopped at the store for some food and she smiled as she saw him add a bottle of the bubble bath she liked as well as some individually wrapped chocolates. He winked as he paid the bill and she smiled as she shook her head.
At the house, he made a show of letting her enter first, informing her of the amenities offered. She just smiled and nodded, falling further in love with him.
He put her bag in their bedroom, glancing at her with questions in his eyes. She nodded, running a hand down his arm and squeezing his forearm.
“I’ll go get the bubble bath if you’d like to take a bath now.”
“I’d like that,” she said, looking around the room that had not changed since she had left.
“Be right back,” he said and she nodded as he walked out of the room.
Choosing to not dwell in the past, she entered the bathroom and turned the water on to begin filling the tub. When it was at the desired temperature, she placed the plug and dried her hands on her pants.
“Hey,” he said, walking back into the room and handing her the bottle of bubble bath. “Here you go. Come down whenever you’re ready.”
“Thank you,” she said, holding his gaze as their fingers brushed.
“Yeah,” he said softly with a nod. “Enjoy your bath.”
“I will.”
He nodded again and turned to leave. Turning back around, he stepped closer to her and placed a hand on her cheek.
“Thank you for deciding to come here instead of going to a hotel.”
“It’s for the amenities,” she whispered and he laughed through his nose as he nodded again.
His thumb stroked her cheek as her eyes fell to his lips once more. He stepped one step closer and she drew in a deep breath.
“I’m glad they were to your satisfaction,” he whispered, his lips pressing to hers so softly it made her ache. She opened her mouth, but he kept the kiss chaste, leaving her stumbling forward as he stepped back with a smile. “See you soon.”
“Yeah,” she breathed, licking her lips and tasting his kiss. He smiled and turned around, closing the door behind him. She shook her head and drew in a deep breath. “Hoo boy.”
After her bath, she dressed in yoga pants and a long sleeved shirt. She brushed her hair and wrapped it up in a towel, leaving the bedroom to go find him.
He was on the couch, watching a movie they had watched at least ten times. Sitting down, she put a pillow against his leg and then laid down. He placed a blanket over her and rubbed a hand up and down her arm.
“Feeling better?”
“Hmm,” she hummed, closing her eyes as she suddenly felt exhausted. “Much.”
“Good.”
She woke up sometime later to the sound of Mulder snoring. She smiled and closed her eyes as the scent and sounds of home filled her senses.
Not moving until he woke up, they got up together and made a late lunch, eating it on the porch. They did not speak much, happy in the silence.
She perused the library of books they had collected over the years and picked a favorite, sitting in one of the room's overstuffed chairs.
“Oh, that’s a good one. Read it to me,” Mulder said, coming into the room a few minutes later and sitting in the other chair.
And so she did, both of them laughing at the more humorous bits.
Dinner was forgotten as neither felt hungry. Instead they decided to go to bed early, the previous evening finally catching up to them.
He took a shower as she brushed her teeth and applied her nighttime face lotion, the familiarity of it not lost on her.
Walking out to the bed, she smiled at the sight of the single, golden wrapped, chocolate lying on her pillow. Glancing at him, he winked as she laughed quietly.
“Only the best for our patrons,” he said and she laughed again.
“I’ll enjoy it tomorrow,” she said, moving it to the nightstand as she pulled the covers back and got into bed.
He shifted beside her, his arm going around her and pulling her to him. She closed her eyes, letting his scent wash over her.
“I’m sorry your fancy house blew up,” he said softly, his fingers running gently over her stomach.
“How sorry?”
“At the moment?” he asked, pulling her closer. “Not too sorry.”
“Hmm,” she hummed with a chuckle.
“I love you,” he whispered and she froze, the words so simple and easily spoken. “I know that we’re not-”
“No,” she whispered, turning over and placing a hand on his cheek. “Not tonight.”
He moved his hand from her hip and covered her hand on his cheek.
“Not tonight,” he agreed.
“No,” she confirmed. He smiled and she let out a breath. “I love you too. So very much.”
Her thumb brushed across his lips and he kissed it tenderly. She moved closer and pressed her forehead to his as they both drew in a deep breath and released it.
And for the moment, it was enough.

watching the x files is so funny because the fbi assigns scully to work w/ mulder & is like "this is great, agent scully will give us Sensible Field Reports and we can finally put an end to mulder's paranormal nonsense :)"
except when the fbi checks on them, mulder and scully are doing the human equivalent of a pair of raptors tumbling through the air with their talons locked together while the words "BONDED PAIR - DO NOT SEPARATE" flash in giant letters above them
#The X Files#msr#i just finished watching s1 tonight! and yes I know they're disbanded#but there are like 11 seasons and two films! they're gonna be filing those xs again in no time I'm sure

Deceleration
Mulder and Scully talk about the ways in which they are aging.
Read on AO3
There was a distinctive difference between the quiet of a dozing Scully and the quiet of a thinking Scully. Mulder had many years to study her quiets and quickly learned to tell which was which, even before they were brave enough to curl up in each other’s arms at night. He wasn’t sure he could really pin down what the exact identifiers were, but he knew when she was thinking. He always knew.
“Penny for your thoughts?” He said quietly, not wanting to startle her. Just as he learned to identify her quiets, he also learned that, sometimes, she thought so deeply that loud noises would make her jump.
She snorted. “Only a penny?”
“It’s all I have on my nightstand, but I could compensate you some other way if that’s not enough.”
She chuckled lowly and turned in his arms to face him. She looked, for a moment, like she wanted to retort back, but the words seemed to slip from her mind as she gazed at him. Studied him. Her eyes searched his face slowly, thoroughly, with the same consideration she would give a specimen under her microscope.
Mulder liked to be studied by her. He liked to study her back. He liked that they got to study each other in the dim light of their bedroom, warm under their blankets.
Finally, she spoke. “I’m getting grey hairs.”
He glanced up at her hairline, though he couldn’t really see in the current light. “Oh?”
“Yeah.”
They were quiet for a moment.
“How do you feel about that?” Mulder asked, cautiously. He knew that they were getting older; he felt it in his joints and saw it in the lines of his own face. Time had touched Scully more gently, but her face was a bit longer and, apparently, her hair was shifting away from the bright red she’d sported in her youth.
Scully let out a little breath. “Actually, I’m not as upset as I thought I would be when I was younger.”
“Really?”
“Really.” She looked past him, thinking. “I don’t know why.”
He studied her for a moment. “I think you do, actually.”
She looked back at him, eyebrows lifted. “I do?”
He remained quiet, waiting.
After a few moments, she sighed. “I think it’s… it’s the fact that we have faced death so many times and are still here. I had terminal cancer and, yet, here I am, growing grey hairs. You were clinically dead for three months and, yet–”
“My stubble’s getting a little salt in with the pepper?”
She smiled. “Yeah, a little bit.”
Mulder put a hand up to touch his chin. “You know, I don’t think I mind it, either. It’s different, but, like you said; we’ve lived. We earned the right to grow grey hair.”
Slowly, Scully reached a hand up alongside his to touch his prickly cheek.
“Now, of course, I could do without the knee aches,” Mulder chuckled.
Scully let out an amused breath. “Yes, or the lower back pain.”
He nodded his agreement. “Right. But… you know, I really like the fact that your voice has more gravel to it.”
She tilted her head, a smile playing on her lips. “Really?”
“Yeah. It’s kinda soothing.”
“Hm.” She looked pleased. “I like the fact that your stubble is getting saltier, like you said. It suits you, in a way.”
He smiled. “I like your smile lines.” He traced a finger along one by her mouth. “I’m glad you’ve had enough reasons to smile.”
She caught his hand and turned it so she could see the back. “I like the age spots and freckles on the backs of your hands.” She gave him a smile that was somewhere between teasing and sincere. “I’m glad that you’ve been going outside enough lately to have freckles.”
“Now we match.” He leaned forward and pressed several kisses to the more prominent freckles on her nose and cheek and forehead.
He pulled away to admire her in the moonlight. She had always been beautiful, but there was another quality to her now, something more regal, more divine, even.
“The ancient Greeks would have carved you in marble.” The words escaped his lips before he even fully thought them.
She gave him a strange look. “Oh?”
“Yeah.” He thought of her aquiline nose, captured in lasting stone, sitting at a temple somewhere. He thought maybe she would have been a model for a goddess; maybe Aphrodite– no, not Aphrodite. Alethia, the goddess of truth. He thought of her sitting there, collecting tokens of goodwill and wishes for truth. Unchanged. Unchanging.
And then he kept that thought to himself because, as far as history had shown, he quite liked all the ways she had changed, had grown. And what is marble to her soft, freckled skin anyway?
He pulled her against his chest with a smile. “They would have tried, at least.”
He felt her smile, right before she pressed a kiss to his neck.
And there, in the dark, they let their shared warmth ease their stiff backs and aching knees.

a brief summary of the x files
season 1-6: There is definitely something going on between Mulder and Scully but... will they 👉👈? won't they? who knows... season 7: their first kiss 💖 it's all strictly platonic though, don't worry season 8-9: these two are SUCH good friends🤗 they have a baby together :) platonically, of course *bts celibacy.gif* season 10: something definitely happened but it's long gone😞 season 11: yeah these two 50 year olds FUCK all the time lol
#txf#the x files#season 11 scully: am I getting too old? at least mulder is older. us having sex probably won't change anything but I should still try#and then she did... and we all saw that 👁👄👁#not complaining im just shocked#msr

uh so long story short I’m towards the end of season 8 of x files right now (this is my first time watching the show) . I was a bit confused about something and since I was half asleep for the better part of the episode I’m currently watching (oops) I figured I probably just missed something. So, I decided to just quickly google my question, finish the episode, and then go to bed.
Big mistake.
Big mistake because instead of an answer to the question I typed into my search bar I got a spoiler. Usually I’m not the type of girl who cares about those sort of things. In fact, a lot of the time I seek “spoilers” out. But the spoiler in question was regarding the true parentage of the baby Scully is currently carrying and
What the fuck.
#the x files#txf#msr#x files season 8#x files season 11#what the actual fuuuuuck#this can’t be right#this has to be some sort of sick joke#are you kidding me?#someone say sike rn#I’m not even gonna finish the episode#I’m taking my ass to bed#x files spoilers#the thing is that I was CERTAIN Mulder was the father of that baby#so imagine my fucking suprise#when I find out otherwise#I’m just gonna scrub that spoiler from my brain and pretend like I didn’t see anything

This is one of my favorite MSR moments. You can feel Scully’s heart stop when she hears a random female is calling Mulder and he just gives this subtle head shake that she has nothing to worry about.

Saw your tags--
I can see why people do like it! There were just bits here and there that kept sucking me in then out of the story, so I never felt fully invested. It's not strictly the logic-- I love episodes that are way more inconsistent or incoherent ;)) -- but I felt that Mulder and Scully weren't Mulder and Scully, y'know? But that's the fun part of analysis, unwinding the objective from the subjective~.
My own beloved messes will never be pried from my hands, no matter how illogical or insane. XDDD
That's totally valid! Several people don't like it. For me it's probably my favorite episode from season 10.
Mulder and Scully really weren't quite Mulder and Scully in season 10. Which is really funny cause the David and Gillian interactions during that time were at all all-time high. We joked back then that we can't have both MSR and Gillovny 😂
#lovely asks#i understand not liking the episode#but it's the best - for me - from season 10#though i do enjoy home again too#it was really funny#season 11 was low on the gillovny front#but the msr was better 😂

Passing the Time
While waiting for labs at the hospital, Scully helps Mulder pass the time.
Fictober day 6. Prompt: That's All? Easy.
For my dear friend Ingrid. 💓
February 7, 2018 George Washington Memorial Hospital
“How much longer did they say?” Mulder asked Scully as she closed the door and rejoined him in the hospital’s waiting area.
“Twenty minutes at least,” she replied and he sighed heavily.
“We’ve already been waiting for two hours.”
“Lab work takes time. You know that.”
“I do,” he said with a nod. “I also know that we’ve been out of the game for a while. Maybe there were advancements while we were away.”
“Excuse me?” she asked, picking up a random magazine as she sat down. “We haven’t been away from anything. You have. I worked in a hospital until very recently, remember? I am aware how long labs can take.”
“You know what I meant,” he said, rolling his eyes and she hummed. Glancing at the pages before her, but not finding much interest in them. “I guess I just forgot about the waiting part.”
“No, you’ve never been good at waiting,” she said, turning the pages with a sigh.
“In regard to some things,” he said and she turned her head to look at him. He shrugged and gave her a small smile.
“Hmm,” she hummed again, her attention back on the magazine. His leg bumped hers as he began to bounce it and she pressed into him, silently telling him to stop. “Don’t you have something you can do on your phone? A game to play or something you can read?”
“Not really.”
“You had that one game you were playing. Just do that and the time will go by faster,” she said, feeling as though she was speaking to a large child.
“But it’s boringgggg,” he said, dragging the word out dramatically while he bumped his leg into hers.
“Mulder,” she said, huffing out a laugh. “Twenty minutes is hardly any time at all. You’ll be fine.”
“At least twenty minutes. That’s what you said they said, right? So it could be more.”
“You wanna find a supply closet and make out?” she asked, turning her head and looking at him as he immediately stilled.
“You… you’re… seriously?”
“Of course not,” she said, looking back at the magazine and shaking her head. “We’re working.”
“If that’s the only hold up, I’ll take a rain check.”
“Sure,” she said, turning another page and not giving it much thought.
“I’m gonna hold you to it,” he said, his voice lower and she fought back a smile, enjoying teasing him.
“With or without clothing?” she asked, her voice also low.
“Definitely without,” he answered quickly and this time she was unable to hold back her smile. “Or whatever you prefer.”
She turned her head and held his eyes, seeing the desire within them. Leaning closer, she grazed his cheek with her own as she brought her lips close to his ear.
“I prefer without as well,” she whispered, brushing a kiss to his cheek as she pulled away.
He groaned softly and she smiled as her attention turned back to the magazine.
“Christ, Scully,” he breathed, putting his arm along the back of her chair and looking around the room.
“You gonna make it?” she teased and he laughed as he shifted in his seat.
“Honestly? Sometimes I don’t know, Scully.”
“I do enjoy keeping you on your toes. Or your back.”
“Fuck,” he breathed, shaking his head. She bit her lip to keep from laughing.
“Can I offer any help to alleviate any discomfort you’re presently experiencing?”
“Yeah, you can stop talking,” he nearly growled.
“Or I could offer a distraction.”
“No, that’s how we ended up here.”
“A different kind of distraction,” she said with a laugh.
“I’ll be the judge. Let me hear it.”
“You consider yourself an intelligent man,” she stated, looking at the magazine. Pausing on a page, she considered the pair of pants the model was wearing.
“I do indeed, but I’m not sure I’m liking where this is heading.”
“You have an incredible memory. Some might say it's too incredible.”
“It’s definitely served me well,” he said, stretching out his legs and crossing the left foot over the right. “In more ways than one.”
“Hmm,” she said, trying not to let her mind wander too far, knowing how well his memory had served in their sex life. Even from the very beginning, it was as though he had memorized every spot that made her cry out and beg him for more.
“So what did you have in mind?” he asked and she shook her head, pushing away those thoughts.
Later, she told herself. Definitely later.
“Make a list of all fifty states,” she said and he looked at her.
“A list of all the states? That’s your grand plan to help me pass the time?” he asked, moving his arm and sitting up, his brow furrowed even as he smiled. “List the states? That’s all? Easy.”
“And the capitals,” she said as he stood up, patting his suit jacket, most likely looking for a pen.
“What?” he asked, stopping and staring at her. “The capitals too?”
“You said listing the states was easy. We’ve got time to kill so… capitals too,” she said, turning a page and raising an eyebrow at him.
“Oh… you’re going to regret this. I’ll be done way before the labs are.”
“So you say,” she said, looking at the magazine. “Yet there you stand, writing nothing down.”
“Oh, you… you…” He shook his head, waving his finger at her. “I’m gonna find some paper and then… be prepared to be amazed.”
“I’m all a tingle,” she said with an exaggerated shiver.
“You… ha ha ha,” he said, walking out of the room to hunt down some paper.
She smiled as she put the magazine down and reached for another.
He was back quickly, heading to the small table in the corner of the waiting area, when she stood up and stopped him.
“Give me your phone.”
“You don’t trust me?”
“No,” she laughed. “Not for things like this. Gimme it.”
“I can’t believe you don’t trust me,” he said, taking his phone from his pocket and handing it to her. “I would never-”
“Dyspareunia,” she said, putting his phone in her pocket. “Thought of that word on your own to build off of your previous word spare?” She raised her eyebrows and he shrugged with his palms up, a guilty smile on his face. “Yeah, that’s what I thought. I’ll be holding onto your phone. Go on.”
“Bossy,” he said, as he continued past her.
“You love it,” she stated and he nodded, grinning at her.
“I absolutely do. Especially when-”
“Nope,” she said, pointing at the paper. “Get to writing.” He saluted as he sat down as she shook her head as she also sat down.
Quiet fell over the room and she was surprised when she realized ten minutes had passed without any interruptions. Looking over at him, she smiled as she saw how focused he was as he wrote. Suddenly feeling sleepy, she set the magazine beside her, crossed her arms, and closed her eyes.
“Hey,” Mulder said softly and she opened her eyes. “It always amazes me how you can fall asleep anywhere.”
“Are you done?” she asked, sitting up and looking at the paper in his hand.
“Why yes, Miss Scully. I got all my homework done,” he said in a southern drawl, handing the paper to her. She took it with a smile, her eyes running over his words.
“You know,” he said as he sat down. “That was actually harder than I thought it would be.”
“Hmm,” she hummed. “That’s not surprising.”
“What are you trying to say?” he asked and she laughed quietly.
“Nothing about you in particular. It’s just not something we think about in our normal day to day life, so it’s not surprising that it proved to be somewhat difficult.”
“As long as it wasn’t a dig at my intelligence,” he said, sticking out his lower lip.
“I would never. Did I not call you an intelligent man earlier?”
“No. You stated that I considered myself an intelligent man.”
“Did I?” she asked, tapping her finger against the paper as she read.
Juneau, Alaska. Austin, Texas. Olympia, Washington. “You did. Find any mistakes?”
“Not yet,” she said, glancing at him out of the corner of her eye.
“You won’t. Because, I have a fantastic memory, as I believe you said.”
“Ohhh. You were so close,” she said, closing her eyes briefly and shaking her head. “I said you had an incredible memory, but it looks like I was wrong.”
“Fantastic… incredible. One would say they’re interchangeable,” he said, moving his hands as though weighing the words on a scale.
“Hmm,” she hummed, nodding in agreement.
Columbus, Ohio. Montpelier, Vermont. Bismarck, North Dakota.
“So what’s the word, Teach?” he asked as she folded the paper in half.
“All correct. One hundred percent,” she said, smiling as she turned her head to look at him.
“A hundred percent. That should get a gold star,” he stated and she sighed.
“Unfortunately, I’m all out of gold stars at the moment.”
“Huh…” he said, rubbing his fingers across his chin. “No gold stars? You got anything else of value? I mean… a perfect paper achieved by my incredibly fantastic memory… it deserves something.”
Smiling again as she leaned closer to him, she placed a hand on his cheek and kissed him softly. Then again. Then once more, her lips lingering on his.
“Better than a gold star?” she whispered and he hummed as he kissed her before pulling back slightly.
“Much better,” he whispered back, bumping his nose gently against hers.
She pulled back further, smiling at him, her fingers scratching lightly at the stubble upon his cheek. He smiled and she dropped her hand with a sigh just as the door to the waiting area opened and the lab technician stepped inside.
“Agents, I have the results you’ve been waiting for,” he said and they both stood to their feet and followed the technician down the hall.
Though her focus was on the case and the new evidence they now had, her mind kept drifting to the softness of Mulder’s lips and how she wanted to feel them on hers again.
Without clothing this time, she thought. Most assuredly without clothing.

watching any s6 episode is just another game of guessing the driving force behind the msr plot. your options are:
"mulder is being an ass bc CC is an ass" VS "mulder is a flawed character and currently reminding all of us of that"
the crux is that these are mutually exclusive because CC couldn't write a coherent emotional storyline to save his life. he tried. he failed. for 11 whole seasons and 2 fucking movies.
