SEND ME A SHIP AND I’LL TELL YOU: holiday edition ushijima + tendou @pridewon
who wears the ugly holiday sweaters suhsdfg okay so this can go either way honestly something tells me that tendou knows for a fact that certain items of clothing (sweaters) are ugly but he wears them anyway in a bold spirited move; meanwhile ? ushijima has been given a few ugly holiday sweaters as a gag gift —- tendou also sorta sometimes imposes ugly clothing on ushijima which . . . ushijima will wear at request if they aren’t going anywhere too public (especially if it’s not holiday clothing).  over all this reflects their general response to clothing — tendou will request that ushijima wear something only mildly outlandish, & because the article of clothing is not the most cursed thing in the world ? it’s doable? tendou always manages to surprise himself however when he realizes that ushijima is indulging him so . . . tendou covers his tracks by fussing & encouraging ushijima to wear something a little more passable. over all, though —- tendou wears some ugly holiday sweaters.  have no fear!
who picks out the holiday movies and who makes the hot cocoa
ushijima hasn’t said as much, but he doesn’t often remember the movies that tendou selects to play. tendou basically chooses movies as though he has an ongoing checklist in his head about what they have & have not watched —- who directs what & what sentiment is right. which is ( all & all ) a big way of saying as a reminder: tendou keeps a list of movies. he records his reviews of them &
every year, tendou thinks he’s going to get into the holiday spirit & watch some seasonal films. but then ushijima starts getting sleepy during them, so tendou sends him off to make hot cocoa. more often than not, he only makes one for tendou, who gets over thrilled at mediocre chocolate in the hot cocoa. he treasures it & makes ushijima take several sips.  then tendou gives up on the holiday films. ushijima continues to get sleepy in the movie. will continue monitoring.  who starts the snowball fight
this requires that there be snow. there is rarely snow. please catch tendou throwing a random piece of paper or a napkin at ushijima & calling it a snowball fight. unfortunately, this is not the end of tendou’s mischievousness. sometimes he gets overheated when he’s working in the kitchen — even if it’s the winter. so he’ll pop out a few ice cubes from a tray & slip them down his shirt &
if ushijima is close enough to suffer? he gets the same treatment with the addition of tendou blowing a burst of cool air against ushijima’s neck & all of it is just… completely unnecessary. sometimes tendou will pretend to justify it by saying that ushijima started it (he didn’t??) just by playing volleyball which was… an overlarge snowball to begin with. it’s a big ol’ lie i don’t know what to tell you sdfgsfd tendou is just making life difficult
who drags the other under the mistletoe
if they are living or visiting in approximately the same area, tendou will absolutely set up mistletoe & drag ushijima there. he doesn’t necessarily feel inclined to steal a kiss or to make ushijima feel like they’re by the book so . . . honestly? tendou just makes them take a selfie or doodles on ushijima’s arm. who decorates the house
tendou starts to get decorations out & ready for the home, not that you’d know it. tendou’s version is basically what he does year round —- where he gets something out, stares at it for a while, puts it somewhere obscure, & then forgets about it. tendou isn’t the most committed to holiday seasons, even though he sort of . . . gets routinely hyped as a ritualistic thing.
all of this is a precursor to saying that tendou doesn’t actually have holiday decorations. he’ll sometimes make a purchase in july or something that he thinks will be good for the winter season. for the life of him, he can never remember where that odd purchase went. so ? sometimes catch tendou literally flattening out breadbags like something can be done with this, probably. or else, there’s a small pile of hairspray bottles he’s collected that he’s trying to repurpose.
ushijima doesn’t understand what tendou is doing & doesn’t particularly mind. after a couple years, ushijima gets maybe… three seasonal decorations (including a single dishtowel & a throw pillow for some reason which cracks tendou up because they aren’t throw pillow people). he figures it’s something tendou would enjoy.
tendou just sorta oofs & tells ushijima that he saved him a lot work.
tendou becomes a throw pillow person.
who hangs up the ornaments on the tree
i’m wheezing they don’t get a tree they just commit to getting a new houseplant sometime, choose a current favorite houseplant, & drape some string lights around it. tendou makes ushijima highfive him for this. ushijima figures they can just go on a hike or something if they want to see a tree. he’s not wrong.
who cooks holiday dinner
this is a bit of a two parter. throughout their careers and experiences living wherever they needed to live, both ushijima & tendou got used to associating holiday meals as being something hosted at a friend’s house. when in france, tendou grumbles & really moves like a gremlin when he concedes to actually cooking… something relatively nice to take to the meal - but he doesn’t mind. he is a chocolatier, but he’s had experience in other food industries and honestly ! he’s a good cook ! he just doesn’t actively … choose to cook after he’s been working or unless he has to. it’s much more fun to experiment with sweets.
beyond that, tendou just makes a journey to the market that he & ushijima like , the one owned by the nice elderly japanese couple, the one that has the ingredients for a familiar meal. tendou will get the ingredients & ushijima must cook
but tendou can handle vibes. he’s got the breadbags at a ready.
who sings along to holiday music
tendou sings along to holiday music if they are in a shop that is playing holiday music. tendou absolutely does not know the lyrics. or if he does? he pretends that he doesn’t. when he’s singing more dramatically, he doesn’t necessarily try to sing well. he’s just out there having a good time.
ushijima, meanwhile, may be spotted accidentally humming along to something in the apartment.
tendou spends half of his life trying to get ushijima to sing something with him. if he’s succeeded once? he’s still working for that next time.
if they have any holiday traditions
ushijima is a bit more ritualistic & routine than tendou. although neither of them really are terribly sentimental when it comes to the holiday season, ushijima is a little more prone to doing things out of habit like it’s muscle memory. please feel free to chime in but first of all — these habits/routines have little to nothing to do with western holidays.
i feel like i could see sorta scheduled calls with family around holidays where ushijima pays respects to whomever. maybe he’s gotta handwrite a letter for his mother’s side of the family.
but that aside, i feel like i don’t have reasoning for this fleshed out exactly for some reason i just got really into the idea of ushijima’s “holiday tradition” for the new year while abroad as being a hike.
who would start a food fight during baking
tendou in the midst of having been fucking around with cooking desserts all day is something to be feared. he might get bored. he might start a small food fight. ushijima is not cleaning it, not participating, & is claiming the shower first.
tendou did you know your actions have consequences.
who would get drunk off of eggnog
tendou gets drunk off of eggnog at home like it’s his job. ushijima accidentally got tipsy off it once because he didn’t realize tendou’s drink was spiked. ushijima did not know that his actions had consequences in that moment. 😫 tendou thought ushijima knew & it just sort of happened.
a house plant was knocked over in the process. . . . also tendou tries to con ushijima into dancing in the apartment. literally there is no music it is just an advertisement on television.
