What the fuck? Scott D'Amore's been fired and replaced?

Anthem has terminated TNA president Scott D'Amore, and replaced him with one of the Anthem execs. I wasn't sure what to make of this, but a couple of interesting stories came out today.

First, Dave Meltzer suggested that the only point of contention he could think of between D'Amore and Anthem is that he was often lobbying to increase TNA's budget and grow the company. Anthem kept turning down his proposals, preferring to stay the course with TNA. (This is particularly funny to me since I just last night wrote at length about TNA's current course, and that I don't understand how Anthem can afford to sustain that business model.)

So that's interesting, but it doesn't seem like a good enough reason to fire D'Amore. But then, Mike Johnson reported that D'Amore made an offer to buy TNA from Anthem. Huh.

Evidently D'Amore's bid "was seen as a legitimate offer that was worthy of consideration, but the decision was made not to accept." That tells me Scott (somehow) has the financial backing to afford TNA, and a plan to not lose his shirt running a promotion of that size. It also tells me that Anthem is (for whatever reason) fully committed to TNA--if they were looking to get out, they just missed their exit.

In this context the termination makes sense. Anthem must have realized that declining D'Amore's offer would motivate him to start up a competing promotion. At that point, the situation would be similar to Bushiroad's dispute with Rossy Ogawa over STARDOM's roster. Anthem must have become worried that keeping D'Amore around would give him opportunities to convince talent to jump ship. Now that he's outside the company, he can't do that without being liable for contract tampering, which limits the damage he could (potentially) do to TNA.

If D'Amore starts a new promotion, and if enough of his loyalists decide to quit TNA to follow him, that could be interesting. However, we've more or less seen this movie before, when Jeff Jarrett left TNA (and took D'Amore with him) to create Global Force Wrestling. I had high hopes that GFW could shake things up the pro wrestling, but it never amounted to anything. If Scott D'Amore is going to try that stunt again, he'll be under a lot of pressure to demonsrate that it's not just Global Force Part Deux.

Because every November Scott d'Amore would do an 80s throwback episode of tna/impact complete with job based gimmicks and owner drama and no one knowing how to do a single flip off the top rope and if he does it for his big ass new indy I'd lose it

You could already feel it the day of with all the tweets when they got left to find out on their own during a whole cap filled meeting. It was big walk out energy and nobody could blame them because the whole situation was dealt with ugly as shit on Anthem's side. All the insane shit that has come to light in the past month within wrestling and you lose your job because you cared too much about your company. Left with just one big "Thanks for helping bring TNA back to prominence but we'll take from here. No you can't buy it but here's your fruit basket".

Gisele Shaw has been granted her release from TNA, so if she shows up in AEW soon then you absolutely know Scott D'Amore is working with AEW ASAP.

Josh Alexander, Mike Bailey, Tommy Dreamer, Jordynne Grace, Masha Slamovich, Chris Bey, Gisele Shaw, and Ace Austin all posted hourglass emojis yesterday on Twitter. (This shows how out of the loop I am with both TNA and Twitter, that I'm just now hearing about it.)

Morale in the TNA locker room took a big hit when Anthem fired Scott D'Amore a couple of weeks back. It's hard to read this as anything except the wrestlers counting down the days until they can get out of their contracts. On the other hand, they may be waiting for some kind of response to the letter they sent Anthem about their concerns.

Interestingly, TNA just announced that they've exercised their option on Josh Alexander's contract, locking him in for another year. Fightful Select reports that Alexander asked TNA not to exercise the option, but in the end it's their call.

It's possible the whole thing could be a work for some TNA storyline. But if not, this could be a sign of a mass talent exodus. Either way, things should be getting interesting soon...

funny that scott d'amore has all this goodwill from tna fans mad about his ousting from the company. and he choses to have fuckin bully ray vs jinder mahal on the first card. like this is your first showing. you have so much great talent on the card. and you're going for the 20 people that watch busted open as your target audience
