Two years ago, dormmates Justin Wenig and Nicholas Diao struggled to get into a popular computer science class at Columbia University. The duo eventually got into that class, but after the initial frustration around class scheduling, they decided âit was an obvious problem for a computer to solve.â
Wenig and Diao are the founders of Coursedog, a software startup that wants to create an operating system for universities to better schedule classes, professors and sections based on demand and interest. âThink of it,â Wenig said, âas a Superhuman for class scheduling systems.â
Today, Coursedog announced it has raised $4.2 million from a crop of investors, including First Roundâs Josh Kopelman. The company did not disclose any other investors, and there were no board seats taken on during the financing round. The Y Combinator graduateâs total known venture capital funding is now $5.7 million. Investors in the company include FoundersX Venture, EFund and Jinal Jhaveri, the former CEO of SchoolMint, a school enrollment startup.
The funding will be used to build out Coursedogâs product line on projecting course demand, the correct number of seats a school should offer per course and student success.
âA lot of people think higher [education] is a slow institution, but institutions are really thinking about how to promote student success,â Wenig said in an interview with TechCrunch. But instead of adopting any technology, universities are careful about sharing protected data, he continued.
Competition-wise, Wenig said that Blackboard, a learning management startup, continues to be one of the two âbig software tools within universities.â Coursedog sits on top of the other software tool: the student information system, used by administrators that need to plan student schedules.
After Wenig and Diao cold-called hundreds of colleges, Columbia Law School was the first contract signed. Since then, the startup has landed deals with more than 60 colleges and universities of all sizes.
Coursedogâs clientele fits a range. The smallest client, per Wenig, is the Laguna School of Art and Design, which has roughly 600 students. Wenig also noted they cater to a mix of public and private schools, with public schools often âbeing the most innovative.â
âA lot of states offer incentive-based funding,â Wenig said. âIn Utah, the amount of funds you might get from the state as a public institution is directly proportional to how well youâre using your space on campus.â He claims that Coursedog helps improve graduation rates by getting more students into the right classes.
âToday, we are just building apps on top of the Student Information System to help schools with scheduling, curriculum planning and catalog publishing and are slowly eating away functionality that schools would normally be doing with spreadsheets and native to the SIS,â he noted.
Coursedog plans to scale to 100 more universities in the next year, and will use the new funding to help âgrow upâ its production.

VC fund Runa Capital was launched with $135 million in 2010, and is perhaps best known for its investment into NGINX, which powers many web sites today. In more recent years it has participated or led investments into startups such as Zipdrug ($10.8 million); Rollbar this year ($11 million); and Monedo (for âŹ20 million).
HQâd in San Francisco, it has now completed the final closing on its $157 million Runa Capital Fund III, which, they say, exceeded its original target of $135 million.
The firm typically invests between $1 million and $10 million in early-stage companies, predominantly Series A rounds, and has a strong interest in cloud infrastructure, open-source software, AI and machine intelligence and B2B SaaS, in markets such as finance, education and healthcare.
Dmitry Chikhachev, co-founder and managing partner of Runa Capital, said in a statement: âWe are excited to see many of our portfolio companiesâ founders investing in Runa Capital III, along with tech-savvy LPs from all parts of the world, who supported us in all of our funds from day one⌠We invested in deep tech long before it became the mainstream for venture capital, betting on Nginx in 2011, Wallarm and ID Quantique in 2013, and MariaDB in 2014.â
Going forward the firm says it aims to concentrate much of its firepower in the realm of machine learning and quantum computing.
In addition, Jinal Jhaveri, ex-CEO & founder of SchoolMint, a former portfolio company of Runa Capital which was acquired by Hero K12, has joined the firm as a venture partner.
Runa operates out of its HQ in Palo Alto to its offices throughout Europe. Its newest office opened in Berlin in early 2020, given Runa Capitalâs growing German portfolio. German investments have included Berlin-based Smava and Mambu, as well as the recently added Monedo (formerly Kreditech), Vehiculum and N8N (a co-investment with Sequoia Capital). Other investments made from the third fund include Rollbar, Reelgood, Forest Admin, Uploadcare and Oxygen.

When Hero K12 acquired SchoolMint two years ago, it didnât just buy some school enrollment software. It also got a new bossâand a new brand.
In June 2017, Hero K12, based outside of Miami, received $150 million from BV Investment Partners to acquire other edtech companies in an effort to create an integrated education data platform. Four months later, Hero K12 minted its first deal: SchoolMint, which offers a mobile and web-based tool that helps parents and districts manage student applications and the enrollment process.
Since then, Hero K12 has undergone a makeover. It adopted the SchoolMint brand as the umbrella company. (Hero K12 employees have changed their email addresses to reflect the brand change.) And SchoolMintâs co-founder, Jinal Jhaveri, is now in charge of the entire operation. Hero K12âs former CEO, Mark MacDonald, left last August.
That also means Jhaveri has kept his title as CEO of SchoolMint, with one main difference: he now also oversees the other tools in the portfolio, and is in charge of acquiring other edtech companies.
The name change âmakes sense when you think about the sequence in which parents and students engage with our products,â Jhaveri explains in an interview with EdSurge. SchoolMintâs enrollment tool, which is currently used by 4 million students and parents, âis the first touch point for families,â he explains, and thatâs why it makes sense for the brand to be the face of the company.

Or it could be SureWatch, the newest and latest addition to the SchoolMint portfolio. The acquisition closed last Thursday, and gives the company a set of campus safety management tools to keep track of whoâs entering school grounds. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
SchoolMint purchased SureWatch from its developer, Vericom, a Roseville, Calif.-based company founded in 1998 that builds identity authentication software. SureWatch offers monitoring tools for a variety of school-related activities, including test monitoring, attendance, emergency notifications, visitor registration and guest check-ins during events.
Jhaveri says that over the past several year, school officials have expressed interest in visitor management and school safety technologies. That spurred SchoolMintâs team to research this market and ultimately deciding on SureWatch
âSchool safety and visitor management is becoming a really important priority for our district customers,â he explains, and âwe see this a rapidly growing part of the market.â
Of all the different categories of K-12 tools in the edtech industry, school security technology has become a biggerâand tragicânecessity. After the Parkland shooting, state legislators have earmarked more than $960 million for school safety programs, which include security upgrades, reports The74. School spending on security equipment is estimated to reach $2.8 billion, according to market research firm IHS Markit. Some schools have even installed facial-recognition technology to keep track of whoâs coming and going.
The addition of SureWatch, he adds, âdovetails nicely with our focus on helping districts more effectively attract, enroll, engage and retain their students,â says Oliver Wreford, SchoolMintâs chief revenue and strategy officer, who has been involved in each acquisition.
Efforts are underway to integrate these three product lines, Wreford adds. âAs we think about the overlap between SchoolMint, Hero and SureWatch, what weâre excited about is the level of transparency and interaction that is possible.â For instance, a district that is using SchoolMintâs enrollment tool can share data about students and their parents with its campus safety systems. The end goal, heâs previously told EdSurge, is to assist schools in assembling an extensive data trail for each studentâs educational journey, from enrollment to graduation.
Across these three tools, the company claims it serves more than 10,000 schools, including 18 of the 100 biggest U.S. K-12 school districts. The latest acquisition also pushes the team size past 120 full-time employees.
All those numbers could grow as it pursues other acquisitions. Thereâs still plenty of money left from the initial $150 million war chest, says Wreford, and the private-equity group who wrote that check will likely want to add more pieces. As is the case for Powerschool, Frontline Education and now, SchoolMint, itâs become trendy for private equity firms to invest or acquire one edtech company, and through it, build a platform of complementary educational services.
