So I’m doing my masters in science communication
and the program is co-run between my university and a local science centre. it’s very cool actually. anyway, my life revolves around the science centre now, and sci comm, and all of that, and so naturally I went and applied it to fandom because what else am I supposed to do? be normal?
so! Joly is the senior staff scientist for the bodyworks lab, obviously. whenever the media is talking about some new medical thing, he’s the one they call, he’s also a popular, cheerful face on the youtube channel.
Combeferre runs the nature exchange. there’s a butterfly room and some bugs in terrariums, but his favourite part is the one where kids/anyone can bring in stuff they found in nature *there are strict rules about this - and every single one of them is there for a reason* and they can trade fun facts for points that they can use to ‘buy’ cool gemstones and fossils and stuff. He loves chatting with kids about their finds, and sharing trivia, and stuff.
Cosette and Musichetta both work in Visitor Experience. Musichetta runs the adult nightlife events, science cafes, etc - the programming meant for adults. Cosette runs the summer camps, the kid’s programs, stuff like that. She also heads up the youth council, where they try to get input from high schoolers. Gavroche is on the council, and he has a lot of opinions - he tends to be kind of the leader of the kids on the council.
Grantaire, Feuilly, and Marius are all on the exhibit development team. Grantaire is a designer, Feuilly is a carpenter/trades guy, and Marius does a lot of the writing for panels. Feuilly also helps out in the think lab, where people are meant to be building and creating to help with their learning. He starts a makerspace in the think lab.
Jehan is the head interpreter for the planetarium. They come up with some of the shows the team puts on, and knows an absurd amount. They’re also happy to answer questions about myth and astrology, which some of the scientists are less comfortable with.
I feel like the rest are a little harder to place. I like the idea of Eponine helping produce the multimedia shows and stuff.
Enjolras maybe works in new audiences, trying to figure out how to make the science centre welcoming to all sorts of audiences, making the content accessible to more people. He’s passionate about everyone having what they need to make informed choices, and working at the science centre helps him do that in this role?
Courfeyrac probably works in the science theatre, doing demos and shows and really wowing people with his theatrics and performance and heart. When he’s not doing shows, maybe he just works as an interpreter - he likes getting to talk to people.
That just leaves Bahorel and Bossuet. Maybe Bahorel was a lawyer and hated it, but he ended up volunteering in the bodyworks lab, he’s good with stuff about human movement, especially around excercise, and he ended up just working there eventually.
Bossuet helps out in the think lab and the makerspace maybe? He likes it, but tends to end up injured in increasingly bizarre ways. He ends up banished to bodyworks and meets Joly, and Joly’s girlfriend Musichetta.
anyway school and sci comm are taking over my life but I’m having a good time. kudos to anyone who made it to the end of this very long post.
Bonus: Fantine is the volunteer coordinator, Javert is in charge of building maintenance, and JVJ is the founder/director.
