 Sheikh Farid thought that Guru ji has said that by doing penance one can have the darshan of God. If God is not attained in this human life, then it is useless. Thinking so, he continued to do sadhana as told by his Gurudev. First he did it sitting, then he did it standing. He thought that things would not work out this way. One day he thought of doing penance by hanging upside down in a well. He would tie his feet to a thick branch of a tree and hang upside down inside the well and would keep on doing penance for hours by staying above the water level. He would eat a little food in between. He became very weak. One day he met God Kabir. Then Sheikh Farid took the initiation from the visible God, Kabir Sahib Ji, and chanted Satnaam, that is, he chanted the real mantra.
