Chapter 17: Haunted Houses
Faith I wake up screaming and thrashing around. Trapped in the nightmare, I keep screaming, trying to escape.
Hands grab my arms. Men are shouting around me. I can't push them off. I can still hear them shouting. Suddenly, there's one voice that breaks through the others.
"Faith? Faith, wake up. You're just dreaming. I'm right here, kiddo." It says
My eyes pop open and I gasp for air. I wiggle out of the grips of everyone holding me down. I look around and see the guys crowded around my bunk. Zak, Billy, Aaron, Jay, and Dakota. They're all here and they wouldn't hurt me.
"Are you okay? We didn't mean to grab you, but we didn't want you to hurt yourself." Zak says
I nod and they all let out a collective sigh. The other guys move back to give me space in the cramped bunk area. Zak, however stays and sits with me for a little longer.
"We're at the first haunted place just so you know. Our tour doesn't start for another hour or so but we're getting ready. Is there anything you want to bring? Bacon is driving the RV back to the hotel." He says playing with a random string on my blanket.
I shake my head. I have mostly everything in my new backpack. I get my film camera out of the storage under the bed. Now I'm ready. Zak helps me out of the bunk and into the sitting area. We wait on the couch for a few moments before Dakota comes into the bus. He walks past us without saying hello, sets a bag down onto the table, burps, and then leaves the bus again to take a call.
I look at Zak, who just shrugs.
30 Minutes later, we're on our way to the haunted house tour. The place is called Milburn's Haunted Manor. I've heard of it at school one or twice, but since it's so far, I've never been. Although, I vaguely remember coming to Salem when I was younger. I open up the lens cap to take a couple pictures of the sights and the guys, but only when they aren't looking.
If they find these, they'll kill you
The voice of doubt. I haven't heard that voice in a while. I ignore it and continue to enjoy my time out with my new family.
~~~~
The haunted house was fun, I won't lie. I don't think I've ever smiled a real smile since I found out I was getting adopted. It hurt my facial muscles so I didn't do it too often. I did manage to take more photographs of the guys standing together in a group in front of the haunted house.
We somehow end up at a strip mall. I don't like crowded places, but the mall seems pretty empty judging from the parking lot. The guys and I head in to do some window shopping. The mall is absolutely packed with people. There must be some sort of historical themes event going on inside because there are people dressed in costumes from different time periods. I mean Native American men and women are walking around in what I'm assuming is their usual clothings. There's even people who look like their coming from the Wild West, pirates, and colonials? Its only until one of the Natives walks through me that I realize these people aren't living. I shiver as I feel the cold gust of air pass through me.
We go through some shops, just looking at clothes. I try to keep my mind distracted from the hundreds of dead people walking through the mall like the rest of us. Zak helps me pick out some new clothes that I can wear over my leg cast. He takes me shopping for bathroom essentials, and even let's me pick out bed sheets in any color I want! Soon we're leaving the mall and headed back to the bus with armloads of bags.
~~~
Back on the bus, I take out my cell phone and check my messages. Melissa and the girls have messaged me wishing me luck on my new life, and talking about how much they miss me and how they're all getting ready for school the next morning. I read through all the messages the girls sent and smile at them. I'm really going to miss them. Zak comes into the back part of the bus where I'm laying with my leg propped up on the couch. I look at him and he looks at me. I give him a little wave before he sits down next to me to watch some television.
"What do you know about social media?" He asks
I give him a thumbs down. I was never allowed a social media account, or allowed to look at things on the internet without being heavily monitored.
"I see. Do you want to maybe download some social media apps and learn how to use it?" He asks
I nod and prop myself up a little bit. Zak asks for my phone and shows me how to get the app store and download the apps.
"We can get you set up with an email too since you only have an Apple ID email, but it's better to have one just for personal use, you know?" He says
I nod pretending I understand.
"You have no idea what I'm saying, do you?"
I shake my head in response.
He sets one up for me.
"So here it is. Whenever you sign up for something that needs an email all you have to do is type in faithbagans44xxxxxx.xxx and you'll be good to go. Your password is Password, change it when you get a chance. Now open that app and use that new email!" Zak says handing the phone back to me.
I open the Instagram app and enter in my new email, create a password, and find a great username.
faye_bagans_44
I show Zak after I get the rundown on how to use the app. He looks at me and smiles with a thumbs up.
"Great job! I'll follow you right now. You should set up the other social medias too, while your at it." He says
I nod and follow the steps to setting up all my accounts. I show them all to Zak and he follows me on everything. I learn how to use my apps, send my tweets, etc. Once I'm done, I set my phone down and stare out the window of the bus as we head off to our next destination.

Camping life just wasn’t as fun being cramped in a little 21’ space with my dogs. I had nowhere to sit but my bed really. My kitchen table was hard to get to because of all the extra storage I had to put in. I had no prep space for cooking or even storing my cooking supplies. I loved the Summerland, but not for full time RV life…. So… I UPGRADED YESTERDAY! I found this floorplan and when I went to get it, the one I wanted had sold. They had one with the same layout, so I took it… However, I didn’t know it was 35’ instead of 29’!!! Regardless, I hauled that sucker 200 miles today and the dogs are soooo much happier! #upgrade #rvlife #fulltimerv #salem #camping #happiness #travelgram #travel #love (at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUGlFETlK_Y/?utm_medium=tumblr

Winter Island  Salem, MA
Winter Island has hosted settlements dating back to prehistory. This small island was home to the Native American Naumkeag, Salem’s first fishing industry, ship building, and a succession of military establishments from the Revolutionary War to World War has a history that predates Salem. When Captain John Smith navigated the coast and drew maps in 1614, the island was home to the Naumkeag who used it as fishing grounds.
Roger Conant and his group of Planters, in founding Naumkeag in 1626, immediately recognized Winter Island’s importance. It was named Winter Island after its sheltered Winter Harbor, which offered a safe harbor for their all important fishing boats that needed protection during winter storms. Winter Island immediately become home to the fledgling fishing industry. It was here on the remains of abandoned native settlements that early settlers dried the fish caught and built their homes as well as along Salem Neck. As the fleet and population grew, Winter Island and its environs became a center of activity for Salem. It was here that the town first licensed in 1637 a public house to meet the needs of the residents, fishermen, and visitors. This area was the working area of Salem for many years. With the growth of trade, Winter island continued to hold an important role in providing fish for trade.
During the 1600s, there were some 10 wharves extending into Cat Cove. By 1698, streets and ways were laid out across the island many following prehistoric Native American paths. The main thoroughfare was called Fish Street. In 1714 the commoners voted that Winter Island be reserved for fishing and some pasturage. As demand grew, shipping spread along the coast of Salem. Due to its geography, Winter Island and the adjacent Salem Neck were obvious choices for forts to protect the fleet and town from hostile nations. Winter Island became home to forts, where the cannons could ward off any attacks from the sea. In 1643, the first fort was established.
In 1699 it was named Fort William, then changed in 1704 to Fort Ann. Salem, thanks to these forts, was the only New England port not captured during the War for Independence. The Fort was renamed in 1799 for Salem’s Timothy Pickering, Secretary of State in George Washington’s first administration. Winter Island, in addition to being a site for forts, was also home for one of Derby’s early commercial wharves and a vibrant ship building industry. Nearby to Derby’s Wharf was a powder house for the storage of gun powder for arming privateers.
It was here on the southern side of the island that in 1799 the largest ship ever built in Salem was launched. The 800-ton Frigate U.S.S. Essex, paid for by the merchants and people of Salem and Essex County, was given to the U.S. Navy. The ship saw intense action, capturing more than a dozen ships during the War of 1812, before it was seized in a sea battle off of Chile. When we think about executions in Salem our first thought usually goes to Gallows Hill and the Witch Hysteria executions. There is, however, another place of execution in Salem that was the official site of four executions between 1772 and 1821 — Winter Island. After 1821 all executions were moved to the Salem Jail on St. Peter Street.
These executions usually took place in the courtyard. The public place chosen for public executions was the highest hill on Winter Island known as Execution Hill. This hill had the advantage of being a rocky one with much open space around it to accommodate the tens of thousands who would gather to witness the event. In 1792 the first of four executions was performed on Execution Hill which corresponds today to the area of the abandoned Coast Guard Administration building. Bryan Sheehan, 39 years old, who was convicted of rape, was hanged on Jan 16, 1772.
According to news reports of the day some 12,000 people attended the execution. At the time, Salem’s population was less than 8,000. On Dec. 21, 1786, Isaac Coombs, a 39-year-old Native American was executed for the murder of his wife. On Jan 14, 1796, Henry Blackburn, convicted of robbery and murder, was executed. On May 10, 1821, 16-year-old Stephen Clark was executed for arson. This last execution was very notable in that it generated much talk as well as signed petitions to reconsider the use of the death penalty for what was considered Capital Crimes.
This boy, who had a troubled youth in Newburyport, supposedly fell in with problematic companions and set fire to a stable in Newburyport that resulted in several buildings being destroyed and people barely escaping with their lives. His age and the set punishment generated a lot of controversy as well as one attempt to break him out of jail. Some 20,000 people attended this last execution. From the numbers it is obvious that literally thousands came from across the region to see this.
These executions were major events that thousands attended. On execution day, the condemned was taken from jail to church in an open cart where he sat on his future coffin. At church the minister would lecture on his sin and approaching fate. After the service he was returned to jail for his last meal, then once again sitting on his coffin, brought from the jail to Winter island, where people would have been waiting for the condemned’s arrival. Upon arrival at the gallows, the charges were read, along with any statements from the condemned. If the prisoner was too overcome, the statements, usually an admission of guilt and a charge to others to avoid this fate, were read by one of the ministers who accompanied the prisoner. The condemned was then made to stand on his coffin while the noose was put around his neck. Once secured, the cart was moved and the prisoner was hanged.
As Salem’s commercial interests shifted to other parts of the city, Winter Island and its forts became paramount. Whenever a war occurred, the forts were refurbished and utilized for defense of the coast. Modernization of the Revolutionary Fort Pickering occurred during the War of 1812. The fort was expanded and brought up to standards during the Civil War, then again modernized for World Wars I and II. In the late 1870s, a lighthouse was built and a small residential area developed at the northern entrance to the island. The Plummer Home for Boys was built just south of Winter Island Road during this time. In 1933, some 20 of the island’s 38 acres were given over to the Federal government for a coastal defense installation and later a Coast Guard Air & Sea Search Rescue Station.
The airplane hanger and Brick Revival barracks buildings remain in various states of disrepair. The Coast Guard maintained a presence here until 1969, when it abandoned the property. Winter Island was reclaimed by the city in 1972. It was then designated a marine park. This area today also houses a RV park that is very popular throughout the summer months. It also hosts many public and private events that draw visitors from across the region and country. City residents may recall this area as an excellent vantage point for watching the 4th of July fireworks for Salem and surrounding towns. The increased activities at Derby Wharf as well as the fees for residents to enter Winter Island has lessened the popularity of this viewing spot.

Living In Beauty – Same House, Different Paradise!
If you’d rather listen to the podcast, click the play button.
https://livinginbeauty.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Same-House.mp3
When setting out on this adventure with Beauty and The Beast, we entered into a mystery.
Rim Trail at Patrick Point State Park, Trinidad, CA
    Hiking the ranch
Along the way, we’ve acquired an atavistic entourage – a mix of signs, perceptions, memories – who manifest within us a deep sense of ancestral and divine protection.
Working dog guarding the flock at Six Sigma Ranch, Lower Lake, CA
While wilderness hiking or stargazing, the subtle murmurings of nature inform us and we listen carefully to learn if we should stay or go and what to do.
Rio Seco Vineyard and Winery
These messages from othery, out-there sources can be shrill in those precious minutes before a deer steps onto the highway or a hail storm descends – and, soothing when wind and rain pummel the rig like a toy as we drive through a sandstorm or outrun a hurricane or tornado.
As citizens of the planet we’re proud to, finally, be able to look to the sky and trust our instincts. And, be it maturity or a life-stage thing, we’re connecting with like-minded others.
Six Sigma Ranch
In Florida, we met a couple – about our age – who lost their first house to the Northridge earthquake and their last house to a recent wildfire and now they’re happy RV residents of the “Same House, Different Paradise” community – what Jim and I call, Living In Beauty.
Rio Seco Vineyard and Winery, Paso Robles
Due to our long-term savings plan, having better health than we expected, and our great investment advisor, Jeffrey Dunham at Dunham & Associates, we’ll soon enter our third year of a location independent retirement as seasonal exploiters of the most beautiful places in America.
Jeffrey Dunham, our Financial Advisor and Amy Gallego, our relationship manager.
A pilgrimage without a destination, a party that never ends. Here we go again! Our third exodus from San Diego.
We’re on our way to Salem, Oregon for Airstream’s Wally Byam Caravan Club International Rally, where we are presenters on the topic of traveling full-time in an Airstream.
Stacked Stone Cellars vineyard
So much has happened since we pulled out of San Diego four weeks ago!
Agua Dulce Winery
Leaving Chula Vista, we took I-15 to I-215 North to Highway 138 and then took the 14 to Agua Dulce Winery in Santa Clarita where we had an excellent wine tasting and retired for the night in their parking lot with wine, crackers, cheese – all the comforts following a long day on the road.
Stacked Stone Cellars
The next morning we drove 200 miles north on I-5 to Highway 46 and the idyllic countryside vineyard and ranch at Stacked Stone Cellars where we spent several lovely days enjoying their top-notch Zinfindel, making mayonnaise from fresh yard eggs, bottling homebrew and learning Paso Robles history from our illustrious host, Don.
Rio Seco Vineyard and Winery
After four nights at Stacked Stone, we moved eight miles down the road to Rio Seco Vineyard and Winery where the Hinkle family (Tom Hinkle, a baseball scout for 28 years) hosted us for an overnight stay in their scenic vineyard and olive orchard. How lovely to share a happy hour and take a “bus tour” with Mike and Erin from Free Roaming Bus.
Morning After walk at Rio Seco
Cutest kitchen ever!
Inside Mike and Erin’s bus
Free Roaming Bus at Sunset
Sunset in the Free Roaming Bus
Carol Hinkle, our wonderful host
Dare to be different … yes.
Tobin James Cellars
After a wonderful walk through the Rio Seco vineyard and orchard, we moved a mile or two down the road to Tobin James Cellars – our host for two fabulous nights where we stocked up on Chardonnay and Petite Sirah.
Cava Robles RV Resort
The big surprise in Paso Robles was Sun Community’s new RV resort Cava Robles which had just opened for business. They were calling it a soft-opening because the resort is still under construction. It’s a rare thing to see a resort of this caliber before any guests arrive…
…and it was a little eerie to be among the first campers, even having the place to ourselves for two days! We love Paso Robles and Cava Robles will be our first choice when we return.
Wine tasting, Opolo!
Happy Hour at the bar!
All to ourselves …
We were the only RV parked at the entire resort near the recreation area.
Relaxing at Cava Robles
Jessie’s Grove Winery
It’s always difficult to leave Paso … but we moved north to Jessie’s Grove Winery, a family winery in Lodi famous for old Zinfandel vines and great wines.
Vinnie’s Northbay Airstream Repair
Leaving Lodi, our minds were racing with details about a major project in Wilton. Vinnie Lamica at Vinnie’s Northbay Airstream Repair had cleared a week for servicing Beauty. For our journey to Canada, we wanted more solar power and battery storage, and a nice warm cork floor. Vinnie also gave us some valuable road safety advice on how to stay hitched in the event of an accident.
Vinnie’s has the best digs in Wilton. My, how his new Airstream campground is growing up!
  Julietta Winery
From Vinnie’s, we drove 28 miles to Julietta Winery – and made it just in time for a party celebrating the release of their 2015 Petite Syrah. After a Sunday potluck with members of the wine club, we were shown a beautiful spot in the rose garden to park for the night.
Roseville and Sacramento
We couldn’t leave the Sacramento area without visiting our good friends Marsha and Dale at the Roseville Church of Christ …
Happy 50th Anniversary to Marsha and Dale Gifford!
… and Jim’s colleagues at the California Medical Association – all who actually follow our blog. Thanks! (Sorry Lance, we didn’t get a photo of you)
Mike and Shirley
Dustin
And a walk through Old Sacramento
Six Sigma Ranch and Winery
The next morning we pulled out of the church parking lot for a breathtaking 125-mile drive (I-5 to Highway 20, 53 and 29) to Six Sigma Ranch and Winery.
Highway 20 heading west toward Six Sigma Ranch and Winery
We camped in a valley beneath a giant oak beside a stream where enchanting birdsong ruled the day and frogs serenaded the stars at night. We spent a couple of days there hiking the trails and roads and taking in the sweet fragrance of buckeye in full bloom.
Our camp at Six Sigma
Mount Konocti from Six Sigma
Hiking the ranch
Six Sigma was an ideal setting to test our new beefed-up solar. So Carmen blow dried her hair … and then she blow-dried Pico’s hair …
….while we roasted a ranch-raised pot roast in our Instant Pot and paired it with the 2014 Diamond Mine Cuvée.
Right from the freezer at Six Sigma
A winery with a lot of heart!
Solar-cooked pot roast!
Okay, that’s a bit decadent for camp food but, hey, ya gotta eat!
Jessie’s Grove, Lodi, where days of wine and roses end well.
Cheers! And happy travels!
We'll soon enter our third year of a location independent retirement as seasonal exploiters of the most beautiful places in America Living In Beauty - Same House, Different Paradise! If you'd rather listen to the podcast, click the play button.
