Matías had been here the whole time Cass had , even if he'd taken his own training break for one of the bottles of water from inside the station. It had been clear while he was sitting on one of the benches just behind the firing range that Cass had been growing frustrated with her shots , and he didn't blame her. He'd taken a second bottle for the other while he was there, and it rested beside him now .

She definitely still needed a break , though — but he knew that the sharpshooter would rather die than admit that. Her shots weren't going to get any better if she kept going like this, and they both knew it .

"You're pushing yourself too hard , Cass . Come sit with me for a couple minutes — it'll help. Promise ."

‘ i called your name, before. ’

As soon as they'd been seperated , Matías had done all he could to find Cass again. The worry was constantly there — for her, for the rest of the time, not particularly for himself , but every step further into this damned place had him wondering if they'd ever make it out alive — Cass would , she was exceptional and Matías would be shocked if she would fall here and now. The gash on his cheek had stopped bleeding now , and the specks of crimson on his uniform alluded to the things he'd fought along the way.

As soon as he'd seen her , he'd ran with everything he had , his rifle hanging from the strap across his torso as he picked her up and spun her around . Maybe it wasn't the time or space for affections or everything between them , but he couldn't hide his relief nor the smile on his face at finding her again.

He held her arms , weapon still by his side for when he had to wield it again, for when they left to make their way out of this hellhole and reunite with their teammates . For now , it was just the two of them , and his tone is genuine as he speaks.

"I know — I tried all I could ."

Matías' gaze flickered to his side as Cass shot up from where they'd been laying together, a flicker of concern in his gaze . The night was quiet save for the chirp of some insects and sound of certain birds, the breeze in the trees rustled through the branches as the other spoke.

They'd been trading stories for the better part of the night — Matías moved to sit up a little time after Cass did so , patiently listening as the other clarified her feelings in the moment. Sometimes stories were meant to be shared , sometimes they weren't — and sometimes , it took a little courage to lay them out before another .

His hand intertwined with hers the moment he noticed her searching for the contact, even rough from years of music and work, it was still gentle as it ever had been .

"Then we'll take it slow ."

"Cass — hey !"

The smile was returned and quick footsteps made their way towards the other as she lowered her rifle, his own held with just one hand as his gaze flickered over her, checking for any injuries or other hindrances. The cut on his cheek stung like hell, but it wasn't deep , and it had just been the result of an accident during an earlier skirmish in the mansion .

The question came not long after , and Matías pressed his lips together as he considered it . He hadn't seen anyone but Cass for the past good while , and the whole thing put him on edge. At least with Cass here, that was slowly fading , even if only slightly . It was good to finally be around someone he actually knew .

"I don't —" There's an exhale of breath . "You're the first I've seen so far . I was hoping you'd have an idea ."

Deep brown glanced to the entrance to the room for a moment or two, lingering there for a second before he tore his gaze away. A second of consideration passed before the munitions expert gave her a nod, readjusting his hold on the rifle.

". . Right , yeah . Sounds good enough to me ."

His arms wrapped around the other , holding her like he'd never let her go — Matías knew just how much those words meant to Cass , who hadn't been sure about this until he had gently allowed her to take it by her pace and nobody else's.

Out here in the woods , in the place that she loved , he could feel the stars over them both . With her back against his chest, sitting together on the grassy floor like they'd been for a little while now , his arm moved to rest against one shoulder to the other, drawing her close as he made his own promises.

"I'm going to hold you forever . The wind will never change on us — we'll always stay with each other , and it'll always be like this . Just me and you ."

It's a quiet murmur, a soft breath . Maybe the words spoken wasn't anything he could control himself , but to him , that was his truth. His heart fluttered whenever he was around the other, and there was no end to the devastating love that he had for her. A soft kiss was pressed to the top of her head as he spoke gently.

"I promise ."
