Okay, Using the Petals and Bee genes for Ruby and Yang is *chefs kiss* Interesting choice of species for Weiss. Pearlcatchers are very pretty. I would have gone with Skydancer because they just seem so regal to me next to Imperials. Though I prefer the Male Imperial portraits. I love doing design projects on FR. I was even trying to create my own subspecies once called SandBar. This is really making me wanna log in and poke around.

In RWBY weapons are a part of a person, an extension of yourself, as Ruby puts it in V1. So, a weapon can say a lot about a person in how it appears and what it's used for.

Looking at Crescent Rose compared to our other main characters' weapons and it's immediately one that stands out from the size alone, it immediately draws our attention, it usually takes up the screen.

Like Ruby, it's striking, awe inspiring and larger than life. It's beautiful, resilient and strong, but evolves to be more adaptable during the Atlas Arc, when Ruby herself has to be more flexible and think outside the box, and her worldview is consistently challenged. It's also very easily the most intricate and complicated design, by her own admission:

"I guess I did go a little overboard in designing it..."

Which, while on the surface means it looks cool and flashy, it's also incredibly complex, just like Ruby.

And as we know from V9, a weapon like that would also be a heavy one to carry at all times too, and it weighs on her. Just like being "Ruby Rose" means to shoulder all the responsibilities and entanglements that come with being who she is, a huntress, a leader, a hero, a spark of hope and light who inspires others. In the end her resolve as a huntress and in who she is, and her purpose, is renewed and stronger than ever before, and wields her weapon once more with confidence.

That doesn't mean her burdens have gotten any lighter though, in fact upon returning to Vacuo, because of her message, all of humanity is now looking to her. No matter how strong, confident and resolved she is, that's a heavy weight for one person to carry alone.

Which brings me to Oscar's weapon, the Long Memory. Which is a cane, smaller, simple and straightforward, but has it's own hidden light stored inside. A cane is meant to take someone's weight by design, that's it's purpose. To be something that's leant on as a crutch when you're hurting to alleviate the pain by taking the pressure off yourself, so moving forward is made easier. Because everyone needs that support sometimes and it's okay to be weak, it doesn't make you lesser, it just makes you human. And it is incredibly human for us to care for and lean on one another for support. That vulnerability leads to our greatest strength as humans.

The one who carries the heaviest weapon vs The one who has a weapon that can be leant on to take pressure off yourself. Ruby who carries a heavy burden and Oscar being someone that can be leant on for support. ooooooohhhh the cymbal ism of it all.

So, my brain did not shut up at all last night, so I’m gonna go ahead and subject you to the horror I created instead of sleeping that is D&D-accurate(-ish) Ruby Rose

First things first—the caveats. What do I mean by accurate(-ish)? Well, in order to truly build Ruby to be the utter nightmare that she is, we need to accept a few…house rules.

Rule 1) All characters start with a bonus Feat. This is a carry-over from D&D2024, and is to help flesh out the character beyond their basic race and background feats.

Rule 2) All RWBY characters start with an Epic Boon. This is a stand-in for Semblances, as reading through them shows they really are just Semblances codified for D&D.

Rule 3) Weapons and Features can be adjusted for rule of cool. If something isn’t supposed to work that way by the rules as written, but it’s cool as hell, it’s now the rule.

Now, with those three little rules out of the way going forward, let’s talk about our lovely little Red Reaper~

First things first—if we’re going to make Ruby, we have to prioritize speed above all else, because speed is the name of the game with her. Because of this, we’re going to be a little cheaty and make her a Tabaxi—or at the very least, give her the Tabaxi’s Feline Agility so she can double her walking speed. Along with that, we’re going to give her the starting Feat of Mobile, so she gets a +10 to that speed, and then the Epic Boon of Speed, which gives her an additional +30.

Which means at Level 1, Ruby has a base Speed of 70ft, 140 with Feline Agility.

We can get faster, though, because that’s just the base stats—let’s talk about Classes now. After doing a bit of analyzing and planning, I came to the following build: Fighter (11), Monk (2), Rogue (2), Warlock (5). The way I argue this is Fighter/Rogue is Ruby’s base class during Beacon, before getting Warlock when she awakens her Silver Eyes, tapping into that Celestial Patron. She picks up some hand-to-hand training in Haven for Monk, some additional levels in Warlock as she learns to harness her Silver Eyes, and then everything else is Fighter.

So, now that I’ve said my piece, what does this do for Ruby? Well, by taking two levels in Monk, she can get Unarmored Movement, which adds another 10 feet to her speed. And with two in Rogue, she gets access to Cunning Action, which means she can take the Dash action as a Bonus Action on each of her turns. That means, with just those four levels, Ruby would have a base Speed of 80ft, Dash of 160ft, Double-Dash of 320ft, and FA Speed of 640ft. And if she could get her hands on some Boots of Speed? 1,280 feet traveled in only six seconds.

That’s 145 miles an hour.

Suffice to say we’ve got the speed-side of Ruby’s design down, so what’s the rest of this for? Well, the other half of her whole shtick—killing Monsters. As a Celestial Warlock, she’d have access to spells like Sacred Flame, Guiding Bolt, Daylight, and Eldritch Blast—Thunder Step, Misty Step, and Spider Climb for mobility—and Hold Person for Cinder in particular. She would also get Invocations, such as Armor of Shadows, letting her cast Mage Armor at will whenever, so a constant 13 + Dex, and Eldritch Smite, to really pump the damage into her attacks.

But with Warlock (5), you can get an extra nasty feature—and for this, we must remember Rule 3.

Because at Level 5 Warlock, and with the Pact of the Blade, you can get Thirsting Blade, which lets you attack twice, instead of once, on your attack action. Now, according to the rules as written, Extra Attack features do not stack on each other—to which I say bullshit. If the rules didn’t want me to break the game, they shouldn’t left the window open to begin with—and besides, it’s technically not Extra Attack, but something else. Ergo, it’s allowed, at least in this hypothetical bullshit Ruby D&D build world.

So, with Thirsting Blade, you get an Extra Attack. With Fighter (11), you get two Extra Attacks. That means a total of four possible attacks on the Attack action—eight if you pump an Action Surge into it. But that’s not all, because we also have Feats! With Great Weapon Master (and with a scythe that huge of course Ruby is a great weapon master), if you crit or kill on an attack, you can use your bonus action for another Extra Attack. And as Champion, that crit potential goes up from 5% to 10% every roll. So that’s a potential of five attacks a turn—nine if you’re very lucky—and with Polearm Master, you’re guaranteed it with the butt-end attack!

All this, from a girl moving faster than a car on the freeway, and able strike and dash off without provoking any opportunity attacks at all.

And so there we have her—Ruby Rose, Level 20 Huntress. I will admit to a bit of stat fibbing on my part, but only so much as bumping up stats—it felt wrong to me for her Intelligence to be lower than a +1 considering how gifted she is, and I put Wis at 13…because that’s what you need for Multiclassing into Monk. Also, while Scythes (Glaives) use Str for attack and damage, I did go ahead and override the features so they used her Dex instead…because, honestly—tell me that doesn’t look Dexy as shit!

…I did keep her Str at 16 as an extra argument for why she’s so Dexy with a heavy weapon if need be.

Connected to the recent yang posts: I think the change in how yang got depicted also resulted in a change in how Ruby got depicted. Ruby fell into the shounen protagonist category, and I feel like in a lot of ways, she's written somewhat similar to male protagonists. This isn't me knocking the series. I enjoy a good shounen protagonist and find it endearing that Ruby is written that way. But in doing so, she cokes off as a tomboy, especially in the beginning, and it means that her volume 4 fit just never seemed in line with her as a character to me.

I don't think this design is bad. But it doesn't fit Ruby as we know her. Clearly they wanted to go for design to show that she's aged a bit and things have changed but I feel like this was the wrong direction to go. However in their attempts to steer Yang into a masculine direction it resulted in them swapping the feminity to Ruby instead and in the end we get this costume that would work on a character like Summer Rose but feels really weird for the protagonist of the show itself.

It feels like they were trying to make her cute and eye catching more than anything else. Ruby never wore low cut tops or thigh highs. She was practical with her fits.

It's why I much prefer her volume 7 design.

It feels distinctly ruby while also adding in things like a more spikey hairstyle and shorts to bring back her tomboy vibes. This to me reads much better as a matured ruby concept than volume 4 does. I think giving Ruby shorts/pants as she ages is a solid route to go. Though when arrowfell sprites come in, I start having slight dislikes for art direction again.

The sprites feel like they're leaning so heavily into making ruby cute and feminine that it loses a bit of her character in the process. Honestly most of team RWBY in this game I feel didn't end up with sprites that capture them as well as they should. Weiss' are the ones I liked the most as they felt the most in character.

Ruby at her core is a scrappy, often laid back character who throughout the series has never engaged heavily with feminity. It wouldn't be strange or wrong to lean into a certain level of androgyny and mess around a bit with her presentation as she changes over the series. In their ploy to angle Yang as a more masculine character I think the writers felt the need to make one of the sisters more feminine and they got their wires crossed forgetting that Yang while the cool older sister, was still enjoying her feminity. Being physically strong, flirty, or confident doesn't make you masculine. Neither does being direct and stubborn.

Both of the sisters were subversion in ways of what people expected of them. Ruby despite wearing a skirt and having frills really didn't care about being feminine or looking proper. Yang while more rough and tumble still enjoyed dressing in low cut tops, miniskirts, boots with bows, and did have a strong interest in her appearance.

Jaune Arc is recognized by his own point on Rooster Teeth property RWBY, RWBY Chibi, RWBY: Ice Queendom, among others. Along together with Ruby Rose, Jaune Arc is additionally the siphoned leaver in this online web series, Lancaster.

Arc can be part of the secondary instrument team JNPR, as leader of Nora and Ren, along with Ruby Rose.

Yang - Atlas Design Critique.

Sorry I took so long I just wanted to catch up on some shows I’ve been missing out on and prepare for college next month- but I got to work on Yang! Who honestly was SO HARD TO MAKE A REDESIGN! And even HARDER, make a CRITIQUE for.

RWBY Archives

Reading her archives she’s reminiscent of a pilot and that’s a pretty odd choice, her design should’ve been at least a skier or a party girl but whatever. She’s never hinted at wanting to learn how to fly an airship, she just drives around a crappy motorbike in Mantle at best. It’s misleading but again, whatever. Jaune dresses as a knight and I don’t expect him to protect anyone, Weiss dresses as a princess but isn’t ruling a kingdom, Yang dresses like a pilot and I don’t expect her to fly an airship when she can just leave it up to Maria and Pietro. But other than the odd aesthetic for Yang, the outfit does look moderately warm with a cool bomber jacket, an orange scarf… and an exposed thigh. Accompanied by a white tube top that just wouldn’t be practical to have in the Great North. I get it, they said aura can keep the characters warm but is Yang really wasting her life-saving aura to be fashionably exposed rather than just, wearing warmer clothes? This outfit can work if she is solely stuck in Mantle but she’s a huntress taking missions out in the tundras! 

There’s not a lot of heat generators out there to depend on!

Hair

No, I’m not going to critique the model, her model is fine. I just wanna talk about her hair. Yang has her hair unchanged which is in character for her, she’s pretty strict about her hair being left untouched. I just really think the hair gets in the way of putting Yang in yellow. Trust me, it is. Yellow is very bright and Yang has such large yellow hair with weapons that are two large yellow chunks. I can see why they barely put Yang in yellow anymore. Here’s the thing, they’ve made Yang’s hair no longer yellow but instead an average blonde, the same tactic they did for Blake so they could put her in pure black except they didn’t. To me, Yang isn’t defined by her large yellow hair, she’s defined by her hair shining bright like fire. If they need to cut her hair or just have her hair in a ponytail to put yellow in her yellow, please do so! 

Primary Color - Yellow?

I love how her bomber jacket is auburn-red for Ruby, I adore the white tufts on the jacket for Weiss, and I certainly love that more black in on the look for Blake. When she stands next to Blake it looks like they should be a pair… just wished Blake wore yellow/gold in return- but with her teammate's colors on her, I still think Yang has too many colors. She reads to me as muddy and unfocused with the different shades of brown all around! And worst of all they rely on dirty gold-brown and orange to compensate for yellow. Yang IS NOT wearing yellow, at all. Remember when I said I liked her auburn-red jacket? I bet you didn’t know it was supposed to be auburn-red, cause in the show, it’s brown. This is something I’ve been wanting to say for years. In the concept art, they show Yang’s gold matching her hair to be more in line with yellow. Even in the 3D model sheet, the colors follow the concept art with actual auburn-red, tan skin, and a brighter yellow for her weapons. In the show, the colors are just muted or completely changed. Yang’s weapons are now an ugly shade of yellow; Highlighter Yellow. Her jacket is legit brown. The pretty tan is now ugly beige. I don’t understand… her model follows the correct colors but in the show it’s different! Is it the lighting? Was the model tweaked and I’m just using a faulty image? What is going on??? They can put her in the prettiest colors that flatter the gold but it all gets washed out! They need to put Yang in colors that flatter yellow cause this engine or lighting isn’t working.

Negatives?

Yang’s look isn’t great or awful, she’s a neutral positive. Yang does have the second-best look on her team even with silly exposed leg and chest, and lack of yellow. In the end, I think the biggest issue with Yang’s Atlas design is the coloring I mentioned above. They keep making Yang wear anything other than the color yellow and when she does have yellow on her the animation engine turns her yellows into the ugliest shades of it! Highlighter Yellow, Brown, Dirt Gold, Sandy Beige, and Dull Yellow. Whatever is going on with the lighting or model, It seriously needs some tweaks or adjustments, I hope in Vacuo where it’s super sunny and bright, her yellows can pop rather than be muted.

Redesign

I understand that yellow is super hard to work with for Yang so here’s the trick, put her in minimum yellow than NO YELLOW AT ALL. I took inspiration from Emerald Sustrai’s Atlas look since she wore limited green but still stunning, and from Mami Tomoe from Madoka Magica where she has limited yellows because of her hair. The least amount of different colors on Yang, the better. Her aesthetic is a motorbike fun girl which I might’ve flopped on, her sleeves are rolled up on her jacket, she has a large purple scarf with an Ursa pattern on the end to help her allusion of being Goldilocks and the three bears, and since she’s the mom/big sister of the team I thought it’d be nice for her to have some of her teammate's emblems on her as patches for her pouch. To top it off I loved Yang’s socks in the concept art that I wanted them to poke out of her boots. It’s not perfect but a good blueprint for me if I ever want to return to this redesign and make a few changes.

Conclusion

Yang’s Atlas outfit is again, a neutral positive for me, despite the odd aesthetic of being a pilot to the bizarre colors on her, she’s fine. I just expect Yang to wear yellow, and I also expect her to look like she belongs with Team RWBY since none of her teammates wear yellow in return. They rely too much on Yang wearing browns and oranges rather than yellow, the presumed teaser image for Volume 10 seems to have Yang in yellow by putting her hair in a ponytail. That way the large yellow hair doesn’t act like a cape, comparable to Ruby’s large red cloak. I always think Yang’s design could work if she just had tweaks of colors if anything else, don’t be afraid to put her in yellow, and don’t be afraid to ditch a color of hers even if it’s a staple to her design. Yang doesn’t need to wear brown, and she doesn’t need to wear orange or lilac. The less colors, the better. I’m tired of Yang always coming out, wearing brown, and reminding me of potato sacks.

Adam Taurus Stans confuse me. Like, of all characters to die on they chose the Worst Guy in the show, and will swear up and down how cool he is on account of “black and red Iaido sword fighting is cool.”

For the exact same reason they get mad at the RWBY girls for developing outside of their initial seemingly two dimensional personalities. RWBY early on managed to attract the kind of people to its fanbase that subsist entirely on shit like Sword Art Online (or worse). Anime where the girls exist solely to be assembly line waifus distinguishable entirely by a small handful of endlessly repeatable shallow personality types so ubiquitous they literally have their own names

Bland, empty cyphers the male audience can more easily project themselves onto. We call it bad writing, they call it the entire point. A lot of people like to use Jaune as their self insert but he is a gigantic loser and some people aren’t into that. Emphasis on some because the entire harem genre is built on loser protagonists which is why this fandom has so much of that going on. But still a lot of people were waiting for their Kirito. A badass edgy sigma male Gary Stu. Ren's much less of a loser than Jaune but also very much does not fit into that category. Wouldn't you know it though, there is exactly one other relatively age appropriate male character in the show from the start and he totally does meet that criteria if that's what you're looking for. In fact he fits the bill suspiciously well... Before we knew anything about him, before he'd had any screentime outside of the trailer and one five second long ending reveal in Volume 2, Adam Taurus had already been pre-selected as the designated male power fantasy self insert by a huge swathe of the audience. And to be fair that was intentional on the part of the show. It's not an accident that Adam is a walking goulash of things weebs are hardwired to have wet dreams over. The entire point of him was to brutally deconstruct the exact archetype of character he represents. The problem is we're dealing with media literacy on par with the average deep sea invertebrate. So season 3 happens and all the normal people went "oh wow that Adam Taurus guy is a creepy abusive psycho stalker and a complete monster, I can't to see him get his comeuppance" but all of the guys I've been talking about were instead sat there like "...so when does the power fantasy begin?" Then by the time they realized two entire seasons later that they were the ones being made fun of they were already very committed to this character. Channels like Eruptionfang had already put out playlists of media analysis videos examining the complexities of this completely made up version of the character that existed solely in the realm of their imagination who, were he ever real, would be the perfect sigma male antihero they were so desperately waiting for. Bit hard to just accept you were wrong by that point.
