A Line from Iron Man 1 You Probably Don't Remember...

So I just was reminded of this because of having to go back over the escape while writing Trust Fall-- but there's this line in Iron Man 1 and it KILLS me, okay.

This moment (near enough I could find in a gif):

They've booby trapped the cave door and Yinsen is putting Tony into the suit-- and after the explosion at the door...

Tony: How'd that work?

Yinsen: Oh my goodness! It worked, all right!

Tony: It's what I do.

That last line there, it's not said with any force, any significance, and honestly, Yinsen's next line ('Let me finish this') is said right on top of it-- but think about that!

Tony has to know what's coming up for him during the escape. It'll be a lot of death, a lot of pain, even though it'll be happening to 'bad guys.' The armor he's wearing is literally made out of his life's work, which he's come to understand through Yinsen's description of the injuries those weapons inflict ('we call them the walking dead') and the evidence of who uses them is not the legacy he wants, anymore.

He has yet to build a new legacy, so for now, that explosion? It's 'what he does.' It's what he's good at. This makes Yinsen's iconic statement later so much more poignant. 'Don't waste your life.'

We don't really think of Yinsen as a character that has much of an arc, but Shaun Toub did something really subtle with him. That scene when they meet in the cave, Yinsen's attitude is uncomfortable to watch. He's almost jovial, certainly dismissive, and the more times I replayed it, I realized how brittle Yinsen is. This man he's just saved was ultimately responsible for the deaths of people Yinsen was unable to save. The people destroying his village, who have already killed his family? They used Tony's weapons to do it.

Yinsen's already been dismissed by Stark before he saved his life.

Even so, he slowly warms to Tony, and Toub shows us this by easing up on the brittle, false amusement that Yinsen uses as a shield in the beginning. This is a man who expects to die, but there's no way he expected to die in the way that he does.

At first, I was a little disappointed in RDJ's line reading with 'It's what I do.' I feel like it took re-watching that part multiple times for me to even catch it, and it's such a powerful insight into a Tony Stark who has recently decided to be a former weapons manufacturer.

At the same time, haven't we all experienced this moment? The point at which we decide to change, but before we've proved we can do it? There's never any fanfare. We haven't earned anything. We still need to Do the Thing, instead of just WANT to do the thing.

In a way, those two statements-- 'It's what I do' and 'Don't waste your life' inform the rest of Tony Stark's arc throughout multiple films. It's not 'Don't waste your life' that has him in confrontation with Steve Rogers on the helicarrier in Avengers 1. That's all a refutation of 'It's what I do.'

And in the end, Tony Stark doesn't waste his life, and he does it with something he designed, just like he'd designed those weapons. He does it with a defensive aspect of that suit. He saves the world-- the universe.

It's what he does.

Liu Sang Watcher’s Guide part 1

So I’ve been rewatching Liu Sang bits of Reboot for research purposes (no, actually really) and making timestamp notes, and because the Liu Sang tag always needs more love I’m going to share my first bit of research crack here, because why not?  Note that for my purposes the PingXieSang goggles are operating at maximum efficiency, but feel free to ignore that.  Also, beware lousy screencaps ahead!

A wild Liu Sang appears!  In an introduction that really tells you a lot of what you need to know about the character, he looks cool, barfs in a gutter, and mistakenly attempts to prevent a kidnapping while Pangzi snarks about his past, personality, and skills in a voiceover.

The showrunners decide that the best way to introduce Liu Sang is with two loving shots of his ass.

Also, the sunlight in this scene does highly enjoyable things to his hair and skin.

THAT POSTURE.  He’s so intensely prickly here, I love it.

The angry kitten/clueless puppy interaction with Kan Jian is also worth noting for its amusement value, as is the way Kan Jian is so ready to step on a guy just because Liu Sang seems to want it.  Kan Jian goes from zero to ride-or-die so fast, I love this sweet boy.

39:33-41:49 Liu Sang arrives at the camp and Pangzi snarks some more while filling us in on Liu Sang’s tragic past.  Pangzi complains about Liu Sang not showing them respect despite the fact that he quite literally stops Wu Xie from shaking Liu Sang's hand. 

Liu Sang ogles Zhang Qiling...

...while Wu Xie ogles Liu Sang.

Seriously, Wu Xie, chill.

The showrunners decide that Liu Sang about to strip down is worthy of a cliffhanger and who are we to argue?

Im calling this the faberry files cos I feel like a spy when I'm really just very gay

‘Oboreru Knife’ Ending Explanation *SPOILERS*

So I watched Oboreru Knife (”Drowning Love” 2016) a couple of days ago and there seems to be a lot of confusion about what is actually happening at the end. So I rewatched the ending and wrote an explanation text. (I watched it on KissAsian. All the screenshots and timestamps are from KissAsian).

WARNING: I kind of got really obsessed and drawn into it, so this is waaay too long. Sorry not sorry!

What actually happened: 

Natsume is at the shrine as the obsessed stalker approaches her once again and tries to rape her. Koh is at the festival as Kana tells him about the man in the fake mask and that she thinks that Natsume is in danger. Koh is clearly enraged and seems kind of like he’s out of his mind, but also like he’s excited about his chance to finally get revenge for what has happened the year before. (ts: 1:31:40)

Natsume tries to fight against the rapist but fails. As she remembers what had happened the year before, she screams for Koh to come and save her. (1:32:18) Right after that you can actually hear Koh screaming in the background and see that the rapist stops. Natsume passes out. 

*Then there’s the Time Jump.* Natsume is shown as she wakes up a little bit later. Because she is unharmed, she comes to believe that it was only a dream. She had dreamed about how she had wanted Koh to save her, like she had wanted it to happen a year ago, a couple of times (1:33:35).

While Natsume is in the shrine thinking about her dream, Koh is back at the fire festival. He’s fighting against the other guys. As he had finally managed to save Natsume, he regained what he had lost before when he wasn’t able to save her. He had now managed to live up to the expectations that he held for himself. You can see his strength in those scenes, and that he seems enraged and therefore uses the adrenaline to dominate over the other guys during the ceremony. It almost looks like he’s intoxicated by his own power, especially as he takes his mask off, to display his strength openly infront of the entire village. (MEANING: He doesn’t feel like he has to hide anymore. By saving Natsume he was finally able to be proud of himself again). 

At (1:36:26) flashbacks come up. We can now see what happened before there was the time jump. From the way it was filmed it looks like Koh and Natsume both have flashbacks. 

After Koh had arrived in the shrine, he attacked the rapist and almost killed him furiously. Natsume ‘wakes up’ and encourages Koh to kill the rapist. (1:37:03)

(flashbacks are over)

Next we see Natsume once more. She went out of the shrine and is now on the street, as she encounters Kana. (1:38:33) The festival is over and Kana gives Natsume Koh’s mask and the knife that Koh gave to her earlier. Kana is clearly in shock. 

(1:39:15) The last flashback reveals that Kana had followed Koh and stopped him from killing the raper. Natsume first yells at Kana but then passes out. The attacker kills himself, so that he’ll be lined up in the newspaper besides Natsume. He does that so that her career as an actress will be ruined entirely and so that he could be united with her somehow. Kana and Koh then get rid of the body and all the evidence by throwing them into the ocean, because they both know that Koh would’ve been arrested for murder, since no one would have believed that the raper had killed himself. 

Kana then somehow threatens Natsume (seemed like it to me), that she should never again see or talk to Koh. (1:40:56) Natsume fully realizes that it hasn’t been a dream, and breaks down. 

The knife ‘drowns’ in the ocean.

(1:41:27) Fast foward in time: Natsume went back to Tokyo and shot the movie. She’s winning an Award for her performance. She herself says that she thinks that she’s being “attentively watched” by her god. (She’s talking about Koh as her god. In the manga it comes out clearly that she sees him like a little god).

Beginning at (1:43:53) the scene from her movie switches to an imagination of hers. The final ride with Koh never really happened, so she dreams about it, creating a happy end for the both of them, because they never got one in real life. “As I move forward, I can see your back”. Natsume says that Koh will always be with her, as usual: a few steps ahead of her. Natsume also says that she’s glad that the rapist had killed himself, because she was purified when he died. The both of them seem happy at first, however at (1:46:52) you can see their expressions change (especially Koh’s) and Natsume is crying. They look agonized and sad because they never got the chance to be together properly, even though they loved each other so much. 

A beautiful ending for a beautiful movie.
