I love musicals that are aware that they're musicals but - I cannot overstate this enough - not the cynical "Oh my goddd everyone's singing isn't that weird" way but the way that shows a genuine love and appreciation for the style

#examples that come to mind are like. matilda the film the musical where she's always out of the spotlight and out of costume in the songs #pirates of penzance when one of the major general's daughters will offer him a rhyme (in some productions anyway)#repo! the genetic opera when the gravrobber tunes to the camera like 'this is a gothic rock opera' (paraphrased)#operation mincemeat musical when jean suggests materialise to rhyme with german spies #and others I'm for sure forgetting #REPO 2002 'welcome to an opera within another opera'
