That spring, Steve’s mom finally gets tired of getting cheated on and files for divorce. His dad is a dick about it and hires a bunch of lawyers to ensure that she basically leaves with nothing. Worse, he fights her for custody of Steve and taunts her with the fact she’ll never see him again - because why would any teenager want to give up everything, just to rough it out with their train-wreck of a mother? But jokes on him cause the judge basically leaves it up to Steve, and Steve would rather stomp on his own balls than get stuck with that asshole. Even if it means having to leave the big house and his car and starting over in a new place where nobody knows him.
Steve never met his mother’s side of the family in California. All he really knows is that the family disapproved of her marriage. There’s a story about his aunt coming to visit once on his birthday when he was like five, but she got in a fight with mom and she’s never been back. So Steve doesn’t even think about them when he tries to imagine what he and his mom are going to do on their own. He imagines her selling her car and the other gifts dad put in her name over the years to rent a decent apartment somewhere, maybe in Indianapolis or Chicago.
He’s really shocked one night when she announces that she’s been in touch with her family, and she she asks him about how he feels about moving to California to some sleepy little town called Moonwood. She tries to enthuse him about it by going on about how beautiful it is there, right at the edge of the national forest, but Steve’s more concerned with the fact that they’ll be living with people who hate them - and in the sticks too! Its two hours to the nearest mall! How’s he gonna find a job in this place? And what about school?
But Steve looks around at the hotel they’ve been staying in and the paper thin smile she fixes on her face to try and hide her broken heart from him and how fucked everything is, and he just wants her to be okay.
They move to California, and the one bright side is the relatives turn out to be not all that hateful. There’s awkward tension and a shit load of history there for sure, but from the minute they pull up to his grandparents house the door is thrown open and they’re welcomed with open arms. His grandpa seems a little stiff at first, but Steve gets the impression its because he doesn’t know what to do with himself as Steve’s mom and his grandma hug each other and cry. The weirdest part is when they start speaking in a language Steve’s never heard his mother use before.
Later his aunt tells him it’s lythan, but she just laughs when Steve asks if that means they’re from Lithuania. Apparently lythan is a very old language that started in romania and is only spoken today in two places. Here, and some village in romania that an ancestor immigrated from.
None of this is making sense to him but he’s just happy his mother seems happier and that he has help taking care of her, since she’s still pretty broken up about the divorce. She’s always been a passionate woman his mom. The kind of person who believes in soulmates and love at first sight. She’s always told him that when he meets the one for him he’ll know it in an instant and that he should hang on to that person with his whole heart. Which sounded great and all when he was a kid, but honestly just makes him sad now when he looks at how things turned out with her and his dad.
The first week after they get there, Steve cant sleep and catches his mother, his grandmother and his aunt talking in the kitchen late one night. He overhears her say that she knew it was a risk being with his dad, but that she’d have regretted it more if she didn’t follow her heart. Even if she wasn’t the one for Steve’s dad the way he was for her, she’d always be grateful because she has Steve. But she doesn’t want him to grow up feeling like he has to change who he is and like he always has to be the one giving to someone else just to be loved.
For the first time since the divorce Steve is almost mad at her - wants to shout it’s too late mom! - but the feeling passes as quickly as it comes. He’s just sad, for them both. But he hopes things will be okay here and that this can be a new start. It could be worse right? At least he gets a room to himself. Yeah it’s kinda weird that his aunt still lives at home and nobody seems to have a problem with that, or is talking about what his moms plans are like they expect that she’ll just be there forever now. But he figures they’re all just focused on making up for lost time right now.
And his grandma says that people in Moonwood stay close to home anway, and that most of them spend their whole lives there without leaving. It shocks him to learn that she’s never been further outside of town than to the edge of the national forest.
His second worry, about finding a job, gets resolved by his his grandfather - who runs a soda shop on the beach. There’s not much traffic durring the off season, but in summertime the redwoods draw a fair number of tourists. Steve’s kept very busy scooping up ice cream and making root beer floats while he flirts with the gap year girls who come through in groups, to backpack through the forest. He’s just turned eighteen and he’s never had much of a problem picking up girls so he has a few flings. He gets invited to parties on the beach and ends up doing a lot of hiking that summer in his downtime. But then fall rolls around and with fewer and fewer groups of tourists passing through Steve finds himself at loose ends.
School starts up again and he realizes that maybe it was a mistake not to put more of an effort into meeting local kids and making a few connections beforehand. Schiller High is over in the next district, and Moonwood is so far out the kids have to be bussed in. Steve’s a little nervous about starting a new school in his senior year but he tells himself it’s just one year. One year and then he has no idea what to do with himself after that, but at least he won’t be forced to attend school anymore. Still, he begs his mom to let him take their car to school the first day so that he doesn’t have to be the oldest kid on the bus. He’s pretty sure that’s a social constant even out here in the middle of nowhere.
Schiller seems pretty normal at first. It’s about the same size as his school back in Hawkins was. The school receptionist calls in some guy named Tim to show him around his first day and make sure he gets to all his classes. Tim’s alright, but Steve can see the neon nerd sign blinking above his head and plays it cool. He’s not an asshole or anything, he just doesn’t want to close any doors before getting the lay of the land. Steve just wants an easy year and he’s not gonna get that if he’s hanging out with a bully magnet - sorry Tim. Plus, Steve’s not exactly thrilled about the way Tim talks about ‘moonies’ - which is apparently what other people call people from Moonwood, instead of hicks or whatever. Steve doesn’t bother telling Tim that he’s technically a moonie now too.
His aspirations to plant himself firmly in the middle of the student social hierarchy and go unnoticed for the next ten months involve finding a group - or a pack as his grandfather weirdly put it when he assured Steve he’d find his in no time and start to feel more at home once school started. He asks Tim about the school’s athletic teams because being on a team with a bunch of other guys will basically do the work for him. There’s a swim team that Steve is definitely going to try out for. He’s not sure about basketball. He only got started back in Hawkins because his dad thought it was manlier than ‘playing’ in the pool. But he likes it okay, and Tim says the Schiller team has actually won a few regional titles.
Even though it’s his last year Steve figures it can’t hurt his college applications to be on a winning team for once. He probably won’t to start or anything but he thinks he has a good shot of seeing some playing time.
“I would stick with swimming if I were you. There’s no way you’re getting on the team.” Tim laughs. “The head coach is a moonie and he only ever picks guys from Moonwood.”
That doesn’t seem very legal, but that’s not Steve’s problem. He figures Tim is probably exaggerating anyway, just salty that the coach is giving a little extra focus to the guys from the less privileged side of the tracks.
Until Steve actually sees Billy and some of the other guys from the team.
It’s just before lunch when Steve and Tim have stopped by Steve’s locker. A blond kid in a red and white letterman jacket appears at the mouth of the hall, flanked by two other guys. It’s like something out of a movie the way the hallway clears for them and the other students gaze at them with awe filled expressions as if they’re watching a parade of olympians pass through.
“That’s Billy Hargrove. He’s captain of the basketball team.” Tim answers the unspoken question in Steve’s glance. “Don’t get on his bad side. He’s pretty much the top dog around here.”
Steve doesn’t need Tim to tell him Billy runs things around here. The guy is built like the terminator. Like someone who has ascended above mere mortals and wouldn’t be out of place among the gods. He’s built like a man, Steve finally settles on with an prickle of embarrassment hot in his chest. Steve’s a guy and he doesn’t go out of his way to look at other guys a lot, but he appreciates the things about them that are enviable.
Only envy is the furthest thing from Steve’s mind when he first sees Billy. It’s like time slows for Steve. His mouth gets dry, and he thinks to himself that Billy Hargrove is beautiful, and he wonders what that’s like. Steve knows he’s good looking. This isn’t some self depreciation bullshit, it’s just inexplicably different somehow the way he looks at Billy and thinks he finally understands what real beauty is. The way he instantly wants to get closer to him, reach out and touch. Billy has none of the unfinished awkwardness of a teenager. He’s a poster child for physical perfection that Steve is convinced walked off of a poster taped up on somebody’s wall, and has no business walking down the halls of an American high school. Seriously. How is this guy real?
He spares a quick glance for the other two guys with Billy - Dave & Chet - just long enough to confirm that he’s fucked. If these are the kinds of guys they’ve got on the team, Steve has no chance of seeing anything but a bench all year.
Billy and the other two stop at a locker not far from Steve’s on the other side of the hall, but not before Billy’s gaze does a casual sweep around the hall - very much a king surveying his kingdom. Steve fully expects that gaze to pass right over him just as unimpressed as it does everyone else, but to his surprise Billy’s gaze locks with his and sticks.
A little tingle dances up Steve’s spine and he sucks in a breath. He can’t tell what color Billy’s eyes are from this distance - at first he thinks they are something light, like a blue or grey, but then the corner of Billy’s mouth tilts up in a smirk and the light hits them a certain way and they look almost gold as he runs his tongue over some very white fangy teeth. Jesus the guy has some chompers on him.
Steve’s not afraid of a fight but it’s profoundly unsettling to have some dude literally licking his chops at him like he can’t wait to take a bite of the fresh meat. He’s pretty sure he just landed himself on Billy Hargrove’s shit list and he has no idea why. Fuck his life.
But he figures there’s nothing he can do about it but ignore it and hope that Billy decides he’s not worth the trouble. Steve turns to shut his locker, sending the message with his back that he doesn’t care about the dude giving him the crazy eyes and that Billy doesn’t intimidate him. His sweaty palms tell a different story, but that’s for Steve and only Steve to know.
As he leaves, he can feel Billy’s eyes burning into his back like lasers.
So much for going unnoticed for the year.

So this is just the beginning of the first chapter as a test.
I will post it here for this test and if it is good I will take it to AO3 making it available in the English version. Remember, English is not my official learning language, but Portuguese.
No warnings for this chapter.
Romania is an enchanting country, brimming with legends, as though it were one of the primordial cradles of the world’s most macabre narratives. Upon setting foot there, there was no other course of action but to delve into its historical and infamous landmarks, such as the illustrious and ominous Dracula’s Castle.
The journey from Bucharest to Bran spans roughly four hours by car. Naturally, as a woman with a proclivity for intrepid exploration, you delight in undertaking ventures independently, whether for the thrill of autonomy or to preserve financial resources. In this particular scenario, renting a vehicle and embarking on the expedition alone proved significantly more economical than participating in a conventional group tour.
Clutching the keys firmly, you made your way toward the car, methodically entering the destination into the GPS. As you proceeded, a delicate veil of snow began descending from the sky. You presumed this was a typical occurrence for the region, confident that, four hours from your current location, snow would not present itself as an obstacle.
Such an innocent misconception.
Midway through your expedition, the snowfall escalated, transforming from a gentle drizzle to a relentless barrage. The GPS signal, meanwhile, faltered intermittently, struggling to maintain its connection amidst the mountainous terrain. Yet, with only ninety minutes remaining, turning back seemed illogical; you were now closer to your destination than to where you had departed.
Resolutely, you pressed forward, navigating through winding roads as directed by the unreliable GPS, which frequently recalculated after you inadvertently took a wrong turn.
Fatigue soon set in. You pulled the car over to the side of the road, realizing that the storm was intensifying. The snow had begun to accumulate, forming an ever-growing blanket over the ground. Still, you opted to remain in the car, moving into the backseat to take a brief respite. Perhaps, when you awoke, conditions would have improved.
However, as the hours passed and the storm showed no signs of abating, you realized that passive waiting was no longer an option. Action was imperative; you needed assistance.
Unfortunately, the weak cellular signal inside the vehicle rendered your phone useless. Stepping outside into the frigid snowstorm, you assumed a brief exposure would not cause harm. Determined, you ventured out, phone in hand, searching for a signal, but to no avail.
Undeterred, you proceeded to walk further down the desolate road—yet, still nothing.
Finally, you approached the edge of the looming forest and, to your immense relief, discovered a faint signal. You hurriedly dialed a number, but just as quickly, the signal dissipated once again. Infuriated by your unreliable service provider, you made the audacious decision to step a little further into the forest, hoping to strengthen the connection. You held your phone high above your head, desperately attempting to capture even the weakest signal. In a fit of desperation, you climbed a nearby tree, and though you failed to find reception, something far more surprising appeared on the horizon—smoke.
In the distance, rising between the trees, you saw the unmistakable plume of smoke billowing from chimneys. A village was nearby, possibly no more than three or four kilometers from your current position. It wasn’t far.
Daylight still clung to the sky, so you resolved that it was best to head towards the village, seek help, and return to your car before nightfall.
The trek was arduous, the snow hindering your progress, and as you walked through the dense forest, you calculated that reaching the village would take at least an hour, perhaps more given the conditions.
Upon arriving, you found yourself in a modest, seemingly forgotten village. Uncertain of your next move, you approached the nearest house, knocking on the door. To your dismay, the door was promptly slammed shut before you could utter a word.
Undaunted, you continued to the largest house you could find. An elderly woman opened the door and, though there was a language barrier, she welcomed you inside. Unable to communicate verbally, she grasped your wrist with an urgency that alarmed you, leading you toward an unknown destination. Confused, you implored her for assistance, but she remained silent.
The woman guided you into a diminutive, isolated church, motioning for you to sit on one of the pews. Though perplexed, you obeyed, gazing at the altar. There, an enigmatic figure was depicted—a woman, her face obscured by a mask, surrounded by what appeared to be attendants or acolytes.
Time passed slowly, agonizingly, and you were left in solitude until the creaking of the door shattered the silence. What emerged was nothing short of extraordinary—a vision, ethereal and haunting.
A towering, statuesque woman with flowing blonde hair entered the church. From her back extended enormous black wings—eight of them in total, each one vast and foreboding. She wore a mask identical to the one you had seen in the painting, further deepening your bewilderment. Your pulse quickened as the surreal nature of the situation overwhelmed you.
With deliberate grace, she removed her mask, revealing a face of almost divine beauty. She scrutinized you, her eyes sharp and inquisitive, before arching an eyebrow slightly.
"I have come to aid you."
“Am I dead?” you stammered, your breath catching in your throat. Her presence was so otherworldly, so awe-inspiring, that for a moment you truly believed you had transcended to some celestial realm. Never before had you been so captivated by anyone, let alone a woman of such extraordinary grace.
The woman said nothing, but extended her hand to you, beckoning. In that moment, you could scarcely believe it—by taking her hand, it felt as though you would be lifted from the mundane world and carried into the spiritual beyond.
"My name is Miranda. You may call me Mother Miranda."
Trembling, you took her hand and rose from your seat. This was not the type of divine intervention you had expected when you prayed for help, but it was undeniable. Divine aid had arrived, though not in any form you could have anticipated.
After introducing yourself, Miranda replaced her mask and led you out of the church. As she guided you, your attention fixated on the intricate golden claws she wore as rings, their frigid touch against your skin sending shivers down your spine.
"My car is stranded on the road. I need to return to the main road and continue my journey to Bran," you explained, unsure if she would understand.
A faint, amused smile danced across her lips as she continued leading you further into the unknown, away from where you had come.
"In the midst of a snowstorm? The roads will be impassable soon. We are in the mountains." she said, her voice resonating with a calm authority.
"And what am I supposed to do?" you replied, only later realizing how sharp your tone had sounded.
Miranda paused momentarily, releasing your hand as the two of you reached a corridor lined with towering trees and seemingly endless wilderness.
"You are free to return, or you may allow me to take you somewhere safe until the storm passes."
You hesitated, contemplating your options. The notion of safety appealed to you more than the thought of struggling through the storm. The rental car could be dealt with later, but for now, shelter was paramount.
"Is there a hotel where I can stay?"
"This is not a metropolis."
"Then, where are we going?"
"To my home."

Hello, Darling
part 1
Eat Local (2017), Henry x OC wife
Tumblr media
After being married to the same man for as long as she had, Ila caught the scent of him right away. The crisp night air, rich with scents of rot and new life, of smoke and fresh grass, blood and sweat...none of it could mask that scent of his. She'd been walking through the forest, hunting for a quick snack before returning to her little rented room two towns over, when that gorgeous scent crossed her path. She'd frozen, eyes flashing as she took in her surroundings, half expecting to see him standing a ways off, waving at her cheekily when he won their game of hide and seek.
Truly, it was amazing how her husbands scent had never changed--not from the time they were human children rolling around in the muck, to the time they had their last wedding back in the 1990s.
Soft, fresh and somehow smelling of the spices they once used in their food.
He smelled of home, he always had done.
But, Henry was nowhere close, his scent strong, but still easily masked once more when a breeze drifted through the branches. Still, she had been his wife for over six hundred years. Ila found his hide away half an hour later, in some adorable farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. It wasn't his, that she knew. Human smells hung thick in the air, and a truck sat in the drive, alongside the car that smelled of a professional cleaning job. One was Henry's rented car, the other belonged to the farm's owners.
Ah, she realized. Right on schedule, fifty years on and another meeting ensues.
Nonetheless, Ila's feet carried her right to the door, Henry's scent growing stronger with each step.
She hasn’t realized how much she missed him until he was just beyond the door. But being married for so long and so often necessitated a certain amount of time spent apart every so often. God knows she could use a little break from him every half century or so. Just a few years between, nothing substantial.
This last five or so years had seen her taking a tour of their old country, exploring the forests and foothills of Romania, remembering a time long past when she and her family had travelled together.
When she pushed the door open, that gorgeous scent of his greeted her like a welcome friend. And that sweet, smiling face which never failed to make her long dead heart swell with happiness. They had been together for so long, and somehow he loved her the same as he had when they'd married at fifteen. He had begged his parents to be allowed to marry her, even though her mother and father came from less than favorable stock. He was the youngest son of seven, and it had been far easier to convince them than it would have been had he been the eldest. Her parents, on the other hand, had just been happy to see her married at all.
When Henry had been turned against his will, he had not wanted to be apart from her, and one summer night, he'd turned her in a haze of bloodlust.
“Hello, darling.” She beamed at him, quickly bouncing inside from the cold, although it didn't bother her. Still, there is something about standing in just a jumper and jeans outside when its hovering just above freezing that makes one want to be indoors. Distantly, she thanked god that old myth about being invited in was just that, a myth.
He didn’t appear shocked to see her, but neither was he unhappy, reaching out towards her with that same soft smile of his. Just like her, he had probably caught her scent in the air and knew she would come, awaiting her as he always did when her need for travel took her far from his arms.
“Hello, sweetheart.” He greeted, accepting her happily into his arms and lap. She wrapped an arm around his neck, the other resting against his chest as she beamed happily at him. “I didn’t expect you quite so soon.”
“Well I wasn’t going to come during your meeting. You know Peter and me don’t get on.” She grimaced at the thought of the ancient creature, absently fixing the collar of his coat.
“Peter doesn’t get on with anyone.”
“And I wanted a moment alone with my husband.” She continued, smoothing his coat, running her fingers up his neck to just beneath his ear.
“Oh did you now?” He smirked, the hand curled around her hip cheekily stroking up her side.
“You know, this reminds me of our third wedding. Only you and me, abandoned cottage, dead of night. Only we were wearing far fewer clothes. And there is no cowering priest here, I imagine.”
Henry groaned, rolling his head backwards as though long suffering. “Don’t start something you can’t finish, love.”
“Who says I can’t finish it?” she smirked, pressing herself closer. But whatever fires she was tempted to stroke to life were prematurely guttered by another vampire's arrival.
“Me.” A low voice sounded from the opened doorway.
“Duke. Always a pleasure.” Truly, he was the head of their counsel, and the vampire Henry answered to directly. Truly, it was Peter who was meant to be the Duke's right hand, being the second eldest of the Eight, but Peter had a wretched attitude and so Henry held that distinct honor instead. Ila supposed that was a right sore spot for Peter, but she was very proud of her husband.
She had no place among The Eight, the masters of eight distinct territories throughout Europe, and thus she had no right to remain and sit in on their meeting. But the Duke had known her long enough to know she was no real threat to any of the matters discussed. And, she was Henry's wife and he trusted Henry implicitly.
“Same to you, Ila. Though this meeting is a private affair. Counsel business and all that.”
“You would put a poor woman out of a house after she’s just been reunited with her husband?”
"Now, now, Ila my dear." Henry murmured softly, pulling her just a little tighter to his side.
The Duke's movement into the room shifted the air just so, and Ila's nose wrinkled. Blood was one thing, but the smell of decay and cleaning solution was quite another. "What is that stench?"
"Owners enjoy killing and bloodshed and violence more than most vampires." Henry replied, rolling his cigarette between his deft fingers.
"Children?" Ila asked immediately, shifting to look at her husband. She had been a mother in her human life, and drew a hard line against humans who enjoyed harming the youngest and most vulnerable. Had he confirmed her question, none would stop her from going downstairs and tearing the captive owners apart, limb by limb.
But Henry shook his head. "Migrants. Homeless. Anyone they come across, really." Well, in that case, Ila was more than happy to let the others have a meal once adjourning.
"You do pick your hosts carefully. Anyway, Duke, if it is all the same to you, I'll step out of the room when the meeting commences."
"Very well, but that is only because I didn't make it to your last wedding."
"Yes, you were very much missed."
True to her word, when the last member of their council arrived, Ila retreated to the adjoining sitting room, idly flicking through one of their hosts books. Good lord, the things humans enjoy reading about these days.
But when she heard Henry softly say her name, her ears perked up she tilted her head to listen better. Henry would not say her name and draw her attention unless he wished for her to listen.
"You think we wouldn't find out, Thomas." Duke growled.
"About what?"
"He's been overfeeding." It was Henry this time, his voice soft, but she could hear the disdain and disgust in his soft tone.
"Sixteen above his quota this year already. And the less said about last year, the better."
"No, that's a lie!"
"And not only has he been overfeeding, he's been taking them young." The Duke rarely revealed his anger, and when he did, he shook the earth, even as he spoke quietly and measured. Ila stilled, disgust and horror welling within her as she processed the Duke's accusation towards their youngest and newest counsel member. It was a general law amongst the vampire community that children were forbidden stock. To harm something so innocent and helpless for one's own sustenance was a sin amongst them. In ancient times, it had been different, but time, it seemed changed even the immortals.
Chen walked through the sitting area, causing her eyes to flicker up to him. He was quick and silent as a cat, shotgun in hand, and without hesitation, he pushed the door open into the kitchen, and shot and incapacitated Thomas.
"If you don't kill him, I will." She whispered, knowing those in the other room could hear her. True, Thomas had broken the Law, but he was still a Council member, still powerful, still respected.
"Don't worry, darling." Henry murmured back, breaking a chair leg off while Thomas struggled against Chen and Angel. "Done and dusted."
—————-
"Getting tossed down the basement stairs is too good for that fuck." Ila murmured, head tilting as Henry brushed the remains of Thomas off his hands.
"Indeed, love." Like Ila, he despised unnecessary killing, but the slaughter of children struck a particular cord in them both. In their human days, they welcomed a pair of boys into their lives after a handful of fruitless years. Their sons had been a blessing for them both, who had begun to think they were just an unlucky pair destined to never have a child, let alone two. Ila's mother, god damn her, had been particularly vicious and despite pressure from Henry's family and Ila's, the two had not let the wretched woman near their sons once they were born. Even Ila's father had been allowed to hold them once or twice.
By the time Henry was turned, their boys were half grown. He had stayed away for nearly a year after, following them in the darkness, hiding in the woods, under rocks, even resorting to burying himself in the dirt in the daytime when he had to, just to make sure nothing harmed them. But one night, when the ache of longing was at it's sharpest, he'd snuck back into their camp, his keen eyes finding her form easily. Curled up she was, and his still heart broke to see that even after so long, not knowing if he'd died hunting or had simply abandoned her, she slept with one of his shirts tucked under her chin.
He had only wanted to touch her hair, to look at her, to breath her in before he disappeared into the night, but he had underestimated just how her smell would strike him with his heightened senses.
A primal instinct surged within him, and in a red haze, he realized he'd reached out and pinned her--his own wife--down onto her sleeping pallet, his hand clenched around her delicate little neck as his fangs elongated. It was only her frightened wheeze of his name that stopped him from draining her.
But he was young then, and he was on her before she could utter a shriek, his teeth plunging into her neck, drinking from her greedily as she clenched her hands at his shoulder. It was only later, when she told him, the bite had felt...good.
He'd drunk down more than half of her, and only lived because he had stopped and left just enough to keep her heart beating and allow her to turn.
That night, after she'd roused enough to drink down a whole deer, the two of them ran away into the night, away from their family, away from their sons. The blood on the blanket had left them to believe she'd been taken in the night by some monster, and it wasn't exactly wrong. It had just been her husband who'd taken her. It had hurt them to leave them, but given that he'd nearly killed his wife, he could not risk his boys coming to harm from their hungry mother. Ila would not forgive herself if she'd hurt their children, and would likely stake him if he risked it.
Silently, they kept watch over their sons, their children and their children after.
"So there is a vacancy then?" Ila asked as Henry shut the door, slamming it for good measure.
"Aye. Vanessa is bringing him, nine generations of pure blood. Hard not to accept."
"I hope he's accepted. Nessa is a pretty good judge of character."
Indeed, when the funny little human arrived at the farmhouse, Ila immediately took a shine to him. He was talkative, approachable, even friendly to the eerie group he found himself surrounded by. Lord knows they needed fresh blood to stay in the loop of todays modern vampire. Last she had checked, Henry's territory's population was steadily growing, but unfortunately for them, babies were making babies. The baby vampires needed careful maintenance if their kind were to stay in the shadows unbothered.
He introduced himself as Sebastian, a gypsy boy from an orphanage, not knowing just how rare and valuable his blood was. He had no idea how respected he would be, if he turned.
"I'm Henry. I also hail from the east." He and Sebastian shook hands, with the latter immediately withdrawing with a hiss. Sebastian played it off easily enough, and turned his eyes to Ila, standing just behind Henry with a bright, warm smile on her lovely face.
"I'm Ila, just here to observe. I'm Henry's wife. I also hail from the east."
"Oh no kiddin'! How long you been married then?"
"This last time, it'll be about 22 years. I day we're due for another one soon enough, especially now that I'm back from abroad. Keep things legal and godly, and all that." Truly, she didn't care much about the godly bit. Legal, yes, but aside from that, Ila just loved a good wedding party, and after six hundred years, she'd gotten very good at planning them.
The human frowned confusedly, but the female vampire just smiled warmly at him. Eh, he figured, smiling awkwardly back, so what if she's a little simple, she seems friendly enough.
Ila stood back against the wall, resting her hand against her husbands chest from behind him, watching their human newcomer with curiosity. Now that talk of quotas was at an end and the child murderer was properly disposed of, there was no objection to her presence. Either Sebastian was accepted and turned, or he was rejected and disposed of. She hoped he was accepted, he really was a funny little human.
But when he sat down on the chair with the leg broken off, he seemed to be properly and sufficiently annoyed enough to try to leave, despite multiple attempts to make him stay. Pressing a soft kiss to the hand that rested against his chest, Henry stood and soundlessly walked around the table to block Sebastian's exit. He held the door firmly shut, even as Sebastian quietly turned around to take Angel's proffered seat.
Although clearly unnerved, the Romani boy sat back on Angel's vacant chair.
"Vanessa has spoken very highly of you. She says you come from good stock.” The Duke continued, causing the Romani boy to scoff.
"You're joking, aint ya? I am Romani from an orphanage." Sebastian protested, an awkward smile pulling at his lips.
"That's alright. My mother was a right bitch, my father a slave to the drink. My husband and me slept out under the open sky most nights. But he kept our children fed and warm, kept me safe, kept our vardo moving."
“You got kids?” Sebastian spluttered, eyes wide.
“Aye, now I’ve got great grandchildren. My one grandson looks just like my younger boy. Our genes are strong, eh Henry?” Henry only smiled softly at his wife. "My point is, I'm a nothing from nothing but you, my dear Romani kin, are certainly something." Sebastian only regarded her that same way again, softly, almost pitying for surely the young woman going on about having great grandchildren was a little touched in the head.
"Look, you've caught me on a bad week. I'm tapped out. Normally I am the man to see, but..." Sebastian trailed off, that easy smile returning to his lips as he tried to talk his way out the door as politely as he could.
"He is a good talker." Ila murmured softly to her husband in Romanian. "Could sell water to a fish."
"That will work for us." He murmured back to her.
"Honest, I mean look, it sounds brilliant and all that. Whatever it is. Save the whales, or praise the lord or whatever." Henry frowned confusedly at the young man across from him. "So no offense, and all that, seriously. Thanks though." As he moved to tap out his cigarette, he unintentionally blew smoke towards little old Alice.
And caused her to sneeze, her face contorting in her annoyance, her fangs flashing in the dim light. Nevertheless, Sebastian saw it, stumbling back in horror.
"You didn't tell him?" The Duke accused Vanessa softly, annoyance curling in his words.
"I thought we'd break it to him gently." She replied sheepishly.
In the background Sebastian was still going on in a half frenzied ramble about how Alice was a zombie monster, how he needed to leave.
Ila frowned, this all sounding mildly familiar to her. It took her a moment to recall--cold farm house, frightened human, annoyed vampires...well, all she needed was a wedding gown and this was like her wedding in 1798. Spring wedding, in their country cottage, two of their wedding guests had brought their own meals. The mess that caused at the end of the night had made it so she had not permitted any more humans being brought as food to another one of her parties.
But other than that, it had been beautiful night.
"Tonight, we must become Eight." Vanessa told Sebastian gently, pulling her out of her memories.
"Maybe I'm miscounting, but I counted eight of you already. Whatchu need me for?"
"Oh!" Ila exclaimed, shaking her head, her hair brushing over her shoulders. "Not me, sweetie. Like I said, I'm only observing."
"Well you can have it back, really I don't mind."
"But I do." Henry spoke up, his eyes hardening. There have been disputes over elected counsel members in the past, and he was just as happy that Ila stay out of the line of fire all together. It wasn't that Ila was disliked among the more senior members of their breed, but the implication of favoritism for becoming the Eighth as well as being the wife of a current member was too much to risk. Anyway, it wasn't as though Ila coveted the position.
"Now, now darling. He meant no offence and none was given." she ran her hand across his back, hoping to calm his carefully hidden temper.
"A vote is before us. All in favor."
One by one, each member cast their vote as aye. Except, of course, for Peter. The pouty little man was more hurt at Thomas' betrayal and execution than anything else, and voted against Sebastian because of it.
"For being over a thousand years old, he sounds like an angry child." She murmured in Romanian once more.
"Oh, so shut up Ila, I have half a mind to toss you out. You've no say in these proceedings." Peter spat from his place by the window. Damn, she thought. She'd forgotten he understood Romanian.
It was too bad, she really liked the young Romani boy.

Campaigners claim millions of shoppers are being led to believe the expensive shoes they buy in high-street stores are made in Germany and Italy – when many are actually made by workers on poverty wages in eastern European sweatshops.
The scandal is exposed in a damning investigation into the European shoe industry, which details illegal wages and shocking working conditions in factories turning out footwear for the UK market.
The investigation claims some big brands appear to be using a legal loophole, stamping their products with “Made in Italy” or “Made in Germany” to suggest they are high quality, when they have actually been made by poverty-stricken eastern European workers. The investigation found that footwear workers in Albania were earning as little as 49p an hour including overtime – which is an illegal rate even in such a poor country.
Workers in Macedonia, where the hourly wage was as low as 64p, described being taken to hospital in wheelbarrows after fainting in freezing factories where they had to work with strong chemicals. “If the employer needs to complete, let’s say, an order of 9,000 pairs of shoes, he will put 90 pairs on the belt and even if you want to die, you have to finish it,” a worker told researchers compiling the report, entitled Labour on a Shoestring.
[...]The report looked at production in six low-wage European countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. One in three of the Albanian workers questioned were paid less than the legal minimum wage of £121 a month, even with overtime and bonuses. The report indicated that women were generally worse off. Albanian workers reported having to work on up to 60 pairs of shoes a day.
Female workers in Romania said their husbands had to find low-paid seasonal work in the west to be able to afford wood to burn for heating during the winter. One man said: “Both my wife and I work in this factory. We are glad we could find work, but cannot imagine raising children on two factory wages. Our parents and relatives cannot support us, so we depend on this miserable wage. We wanted to move from the village to the city for a better life, but cannot afford to pay city rent from our salaries.
[...]About 24 billion pairs of shoes are produced worldwide every year, including about 729 million made in Europe. But prices for European shoes are higher: an average Italian pair exports for £39, while an average Chinese pair exports for £3.
In a Macedonian factory supplying the Geox, Deichmann and Bata brands, workers said they were expected to use strong chemicals and complained of rheumatism, back pain, allergies and respiratory problems. They said their skin was often exposed to harmful chemicals because wearing gloves meant lower productivity and even lower wages.
Deichmann said it was not aware of issues with the factory, but was conducting its own investigation and would take any action necessary.
According to the report many workers complained of sweltering conditions in summer and freezing factories in winter. “My hands are freezing, I’m shivering all over and the door to the hall is open all the time,” one worker said. “If I get sick at work and if I have a car, somebody will take me to the hospital. But if I don’t have a car, then I will be taken in a wheelbarrow,” said another.
“In the summer, the heat is unbearable so we have had the ambulance here six times this year because co-workers had heat stroke,” said one Slovak worker.
---
If $50-60 shoes are made by people being paid poverty wages imagine how low the pay is for workers in the global south making cheaper shoes?

Mastering European Travel: A Complete Planning Guide
Tumblr media
Europe is a dream destination for many travelers, offering a rich blend of history, diverse cultures, stunning landscapes, and culinary delights. Whether you’re planning to explore the romantic streets of Paris, wander through the ancient ruins of Rome, or hike the rugged Scottish Highlands, there’s something for everyone on this continent. However, to make the most of your European adventure, planning is key. In this comprehensive guide, we'll walk you through everything you need to know to master European travel, from budgeting and transportation to must-visit destinations and cultural tips.
1. Choosing Your European Destinations
Europe is vast, with over 40 countries to explore, each offering a unique experience. Depending on the length of your trip and your interests, you may want to focus on specific regions or cities.
Popular Regions to Consider:
Western Europe: France, Germany, Spain, the UK, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
Southern Europe: Italy, Greece, Portugal, and Croatia.
Eastern Europe: Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, and Romania.
Northern Europe: Scandinavia (Denmark, Sweden, Norway), and Finland.
Central Europe: Austria, Switzerland, and Slovakia.
Key Considerations for Choosing Destinations:
Your Interests: Do you love art, architecture, history, nature, or food? Different cities and regions specialize in different experiences. Paris is perfect for art lovers, while history buffs may prefer Athens or Rome.
Budget: Northern and Western Europe tend to be more expensive, while Eastern and Southern Europe can offer more budget-friendly options.
Travel Seasons: Consider the time of year. Summer is popular but crowded, while winter can offer cheaper rates and a more authentic local experience (though weather may be an issue in some regions).
2. Setting a Travel Budget
Travel in Europe can range from affordable to luxurious depending on your choices for accommodation, dining, and activities. Here’s a breakdown of what you should consider while budgeting:
Accommodation
Hostels: Ideal for solo travelers or those on a budget. Many hostels in Europe are clean, safe, and offer private rooms as well.
Airbnb & Vacation Rentals: A great option for couples or families wanting more space and kitchen facilities.
Hotels: Mid-range hotels offer comfort without breaking the bank, while luxury travelers can indulge in Europe’s many five-star hotels.
Budget Tip: Look into staying in less-touristy areas or smaller towns outside major cities, where accommodation tends to be cheaper.
Transportation
Flights: Europe is connected by an extensive network of budget airlines (like Ryanair, EasyJet), but be mindful of extra baggage fees and airport locations, which can be far from city centers.
Trains: The European rail system is world-class, especially for intercity and regional travel. Consider a Eurail pass if you plan to visit multiple countries by train.
Buses: Companies like FlixBus offer affordable and extensive bus routes throughout Europe, a great option for budget travelers.
Car Rentals: If you plan to explore rural areas or smaller towns, renting a car might be the best option. However, parking in cities can be expensive and difficult.
Dining & Food
Street Food & Markets: Many European cities have excellent street food and local markets where you can sample delicious, authentic dishes at a fraction of the cost of dining in restaurants.
Cafés & Casual Dining: Lunch specials or “prix fixe” menus often provide good value for money.
Fine Dining: If you’re a foodie, Europe boasts some of the world’s best Michelin-star restaurants, but these will increase your food budget.
Activities & Sightseeing
Free Attractions: Many European cities have free attractions, such as parks, historical landmarks, and even museums on certain days of the week.
City Passes: Consider purchasing city passes (e.g., Paris Pass, Rome Card) that provide free or discounted entry to top attractions, as well as free public transportation.
Tours: Guided tours can be a great way to learn about a destination, but opt for group tours if you’re looking to save money.
3. Planning Your Transportation Around Europe
Getting around Europe is relatively easy thanks to its well-developed infrastructure. Here’s a breakdown of the main options:
Flights
Budget Airlines: Low-cost carriers such as Ryanair, Wizz Air, and EasyJet make it easy to hop between major European cities. Keep an eye out for flash sales and be mindful of hidden fees, such as those for checked luggage.
Major Airlines: For longer flights or transatlantic travel, consider full-service airlines like British Airways, Lufthansa, or Air France, which often offer more comfortable experiences.
Trains
Europe’s train system is one of the best in the world, making it easy to travel between countries and cities. Countries like Switzerland, France, and Germany have high-speed trains, while others, like Italy and Spain, also offer scenic routes.
Eurail Pass: If you’re planning to visit multiple countries, consider purchasing a Eurail pass, which offers unlimited train travel within a set period (e.g., 7 days, 1 month). This can be a cost-effective way to explore Europe, especially if you're covering long distances.
Buses
FlixBus & Eurolines: For budget travelers, buses are an affordable way to get around. They’re slower than trains but can be a great option for night travel, saving you both time and the cost of accommodation for a night.
Car Rentals
If you plan to explore remote or rural areas, renting a car can offer flexibility. However, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the local driving rules and road signs in each country, as they can vary significantly.
Public Transportation
Most European cities have excellent public transport systems, including buses, trams, and metros. You can buy day passes or city cards that offer unlimited travel for a set period. In cities like Paris, London, and Berlin, public transport is often faster and more convenient than driving.
4. Travel Tips for a Smooth European Experience
Understanding Schengen Zone Rules
Most of Europe is part of the Schengen Zone, which allows for visa-free travel between member countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. If you're visiting non-Schengen countries (e.g., the UK, Ireland, Romania), you'll need to check specific entry requirements. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after your return date.
Learning Basic Phrases
While English is widely spoken in many European countries, especially in tourist areas, learning a few basic phrases in the local language (hello, please, thank you) can go a long way in enhancing your experience and showing respect for the local culture.
Currency & Payments
Currency: The Euro is used by 19 of the 27 EU member countries, while others like the UK, Switzerland, and Scandinavian countries have their own currencies.
ATMs & Cards: Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, but it’s always a good idea to carry some cash, especially in smaller towns or rural areas where card payments may not be accepted.
Packing Tips
Pack Light: Europe’s cobblestone streets, narrow alleyways, and public transport systems can make it difficult to manage heavy luggage. Stick to a carry-on if possible.
Adapters: Europe uses different electrical outlets than the US or UK, so make sure to pack a universal adapter.
Safety & Travel Insurance
Europe is generally a very safe destination for travelers. However, it’s always a good idea to stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas where pickpocketing can be common.
Travel Insurance: Make sure to get travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage.
5. Must-See European Cities and Experiences
While every traveler’s preferences will differ, here are some can’t-miss cities and experiences:
Paris, France
Highlights: The Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum, Notre-Dame Cathedral, and charming neighborhoods like Montmartre.
Tip: Visit in the early morning or late evening to avoid crowds at popular sites like the Eiffel Tower.
Rome, Italy
Highlights: The Colosseum, Vatican City, Roman Forum, and the delicious Italian cuisine.
Tip: Book your Vatican tickets in advance to skip the long lines.
Prague, Czech Republic
Highlights: The Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, Old Town Square, and the famous Astronomical Clock.
Tip: Visit during the shoulder season (spring or fall) to enjoy fewer crowds and milder weather.
Barcelona, Spain
Highlights: The architectural wonders of Antoni Gaudí, including the Sagrada Família and Park Güell, and the lively Las Ramblas.
Tip: Try to catch a local flamenco performance for a taste of Spanish culture.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Highlights: The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, and a boat ride through the iconic canals.
Tip: Rent a bike to explore the city like a local.
Edinburgh, Scotland
Highlights: Edinburgh Castle, Arthur's Seat, and the historic Royal Mile.
Tip: Visit during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August for a world-class arts festival.
Conclusion
Mastering European travel requires a mix of careful planning and the willingness to embrace spontaneous adventures. By setting a clear budget, choosing the right transportation, and familiarizing yourself with the regions and cultures of Europe, you’ll be well on your way to a memorable and stress-free journey. Europe’s rich history, vibrant cities, and breathtaking landscapes offer endless opportunities for exploration.

SJM Crackshipmonth: Childhood Friends to Lovers
Tumblr media
Feyre nervously took the paper bag from her father, swallowing when her eyes flicked to the playground before her. "Do you want me to come with you?" her father asked. She shook her head. Cassian was most comfortable about her father but he still didn't trust men, probably never could. Someone behind them called "Apollion" and her father smiled at her. "I'll be right here if you need me, princess." Feyre nodded once more and said goodbye, making her treck over to the tree behind the swing. Cassian was already perching on a low lying branch, his leg dangling from it as he waved to Feyre.
She ran the rest of the path, Cassian jumping from the branch and welcoming her hug. He squeezed her tightly, as he always did and Feyre was glad. "Here," she held the bag towards her best friend, "The cars box is for you and the blue one is for your mother." she told him. Cassian grinned, hugging her again. "Thanks, Fey! She's going to be so excited!"
Feyre smiled, not feeling like smiling at all. Cassian saw, it always saw it when she felt unwell. "You look sad," he told her. Feyre shrugged, kicking a rock away. "You can tell me."
She looked into her friend's hazel eyes and sighed, tears lining her eyes. Cassian led her to a tree stump for her to sit down. "I need to tell you something. It's very important." she said quietly.
Cassian nodded. "Okay."
Feyre wiped her tears away. "Dad and I are moving back to Romania." she sniffled.
"Oh," Cassian said. "I–" he sat beside her, "I'm going to miss you, Fey." he put an arm around her.
"I'll miss you too, Cassie." she said, her throat feeling incredibly right. "I'll come back to you and I'll send you letters! Maybe I'll get you a plane ticket when you are allowed to travel."
"You better!" he grinned. "I'm not leaving. You also made me a promise, remember?"
Feyre huffed a laugh. "I'll meet you before we are twenty five."
Tumblr media
Cassian shuffled into yet another position. He was waiting for twenty minutes, it wasn't long but it was enough time for his hands to get sweaty and his heart pound like a war drum. He was surprised when he got the message from Feyre's friend, inviting him to Romania for her 25th birthday. Feyre and Cassian held some contact these past years, not as much as they wanted but life, unfortunately, got in the way. Of course he had missed her like crazy, for over a decade now, but he had thought she moved on from him. So either that wasn't true and she still talked about it or Mor likes to exaggerate, which he wouldn't be surprise if that was the case from the amount she was blabbering since she brought him here.
"They are coming!" Mor announced when she peeped behind the blinds, rushing towards him. "Quiet." she told him, slamming on of these ridiculous party hats on his head. "They'll be here in a minute."
"I'm not even saying any-"
"Shh!" she said, giggling. That was the moment they heard the rustling of keys as Apollion and Feyre unlocked. Cassian could barely hear about the roaring in his ears, ribbing his sweaty hands on his jeans. Thoughts slammed into him. Even if she was still talking about you, that doesn't mean she wants to see you. The front door opened. She's grown, maybe you'll never have the bond again that you had back then. Footsteps. You didn't fight enough to keep contact. Mumbling in the hallway. She's going to hate you. Footsteps are nearing. She's never going to like you again. Two silhouettes in the door way, a hand snaking to the light switch. You are worthless to her-
"Surprise!" Mor and Cassian yelled when the light flickered on. He put a grin on, his eyes wholly fixed on Feyre and all the previous thoughts where gone. Feyre was so beautiful, he feels like someone knocked the breath out of him. Her curly, golden brown hair was up in a ponytail, a few fallen out strands framing her face. The jeans she was wearing looked like they were worth half a years rent, which she wore with a washed out Freddy Kruger shirt and converse. Her gray-blue eyes stared up at him, her lips, he was pretty sure she was wearing lip gloss, opened and closed, without bringing out a tone. She turned her had back, "Dad,"
Apollion smiled at her, reminding Cassian of their childhood days when he arrived with Feyre at the playground. His blonde hair was slightly longer now, and a few wrinkles formed in his phase but other than that, he looked pretty much the same as over a decade ago. He still dressed like a victorian goth vampire and he was still incredibly intimidating. "I promised you a small birthday, you didn't tell me anything about surprises." he told her. He threw Cassian one warning look that told him Hurt her and you'll be dead and left the room. Mor followed him, mumbling some nonsense about checking the balloons.
Feyre looked back at Cassian, her eyes looking much more blue as silver lined them. Cassian opened his mouth, not knowing what to say, but Feyre dashed forward and threw her arms around Cassian. "Cassie!" she sobbed as she pressed him to her. "I missed you so much!"
Cassian slung his hands around her waist, squeezing her into the hug, swallowing as his throat felt tight. "I missed you too, Fey," he whispered. "Every goddamn day." She pressed her face into the crook of Cassian's neck as another sob wrecked through her. "I–" Cassian sighed, not wanting to let go of her, "I have a present for you."
Feyre stepped back, wiping her face with the sleeve of her shirt. "You didn't have to get me anything, I'm just glad you're here." she said hoarsely.
He smiled, fishing the little present out of his jeans pocket, "Don't worry, it's nothing big."
Feyre untied the bow, "It's not nothing," she said, discarding the bow on the coffee table. "It means a lot to me," she opened the box, gasping as she looked at the necklace within. Cassian knew what she saw, of course. Two intertwined circles, adorned with a sapphire and a ruby. "It's beautiful!" she raised on her toes and kissed him on the cheek. "Man, you grew quite a bit."
Cassian smirked. "Seems like I grew for you too because you are still the same size."
Feyre laughed, slapping his arm. "Fuck off!" she giggled. When they both calmed down a bit, she asked, "Put it on me?"
Cassian nodded and motioned for her to turn around as he took the necklace. "I'm glad it's not a ring, I thought you'd make good on your promise to marry me when we turn 25." Feyre told him as she held up her hair.
Cassian fumbled with the clasp, chlcukling. "I'm not trying to marry you." he told her, closing the clasp. "Yet."
"Take me out on a date first, Cassie." she said, her shoulders shaking in silent laughter.
It died down when his thumb roved over the skin of her neck, "Maybe I will."
Feyre took a deep breath before she replied, "Maybe I'll say yes."

Driving in Italy as a tourist: all you need to know
Tumblr media
It is understandable why so many people think of Italy as their dream vacation destination, with its gorgeous beach villages, breathtaking architecture, and isolated communities. Italy is renowned for its beautiful landscapes, delectable cuisine, and kind inhabitants. So what's holding you back from travelling to this idyllic European nation?
Before purchasing this ticket, you should know a few things if you're preparing to take that ideal vacation. This guide has everything you need to know about Italy, including procuring an international driving permit Italy, driving restrictions, prohibitions, automobile rentals, and major tourist spots.
How does this guide assist with driving in Italy?
Many people's dreams of driving in Italy have come true. Modern-historical hybrid statues and structures are more appealing, enjoyable, and liberating. Can you drive here, though? Our in-depth driving guide will give you the confidence to drive if you're nervous about driving in the country.
Basic information
Italy, a country in southern Europe, is famous for its delectable cuisine and lovely architecture. Millions of visitors come to the nation each year from around the world, attracted by its lively culture and turbulent past. However, before you fantasize about eating Italian pasta and Neapolitan pizza, you must know the country's travel restrictions and security precautions.
Geographical area
Italy is a nation in southern Europe that borders Greece, Romania, Austria, Spain, and France. This boot-shaped nation protrudes into the Mediterranean Sea and is connected to the south by the Alps, the Po River, and islands like Sicily. Italy is renowned for its beautiful scenery, and many regions of the nation are home to untamed mountains and clear lakes.
Each city in the nation is unique, with its food and accent, as few highways link places in this rocky environment. In addition, the country's hilly geography contributes to its typically moderate temperature. But if you travel to southern Italy, you will find stunning coastlines. In reality, the nation boasts a variety of landscapes that are suited for different kinds of tourists.
Land size
Sicily and Sardinia are part of Italy's 301,230 km2 of territory. Sicily occupies approximately 25,708 km2 of the mainland's 1,185 km long and 381 km broad. On the other hand, Sardinia covers 24,090 square kilometres (9,300 square miles).
International Driver's License for foreigners
If you want to complete all the requirements and adhere to the traffic laws, exploring Italian cities and towns by car may become one of your most treasured experiences. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is one of the prerequisites for driving in Italy's cities and towns by car, which may become one of your most treasured experiences. An International Driving Permit (IDP) Italy is one of the prerequisites for driving in Italy. A travel document, an IDP, enables you to operate a vehicle abroad.
Does Italy need a foreign driver's licence?
For up to six months, foreigners must get an international driving permit to drive in Italy. You must present both a local and an international driving licence when renting a car in Italy. You must still provide the authorities with your IDP even if you drive in Italy with a US licence.
Renting a car in Italy
Discovering Italy is like unwrapping a trunk of the most exquisite objects you've ever seen. Although the country's public transportation system is superb, most visitors still rent vehicles to reach the key tourist spots. Rural locations and coastal communities are both conveniently accessible by automobile. You should know a few things about renting a car in Italy before you begin your internet search for the ideal vehicle.
Automobile rental
You may hire a car in Italy if you hesitate to use the country's public transportation system. It is simple to locate a reputable automobile rental agency in Italy.
Required paperwork
Driving in Italy requires the same documentation needed to rent a car. A valid driver's licence, identity card, credit card, and passport visa with a minimum one-year expiration date ,and international driving license must be presented to the automobile rental agency.
Italian road regulations
Driving in Italy is a dreamlike, free experience that allows you to travel from one place to another. The Italian government is pleased to help tourists navigate Italy and warmly welcomes them. The Highway Code is not an exception, though. Italian driving regulations are simpler to adhere to in nations where driving is done on the right, including those in the European Union. It might be challenging for those unfamiliar with left-hand drive countries at first, but it gets easier after a few trips.
Key guidelines
You must remember that some driving regulations must be obeyed when driving abroad. Therefore, please follow the fundamental rules that are in effect in Italy. Breaking them will result in fines.
Drunken driving
Italy is well-known for its Neapolitan pizza and pasta meals and nationwide wine tastings. Although it is a wine-producing nation, driving while intoxicated is not permitted. Italy has a far lower alcohol limit than most European nations—just 0.5 milligrammes per millilitre. Drivers working as professionals or with less than three years of experience cannot drive while intoxicated.
The best action is to refrain from consuming alcohol while driving if you don't want to get into problems. The police will do a sobriety test if you are in an accident. It's advisable to have someone else drive or use a cab service if you really must have a glass of wine. Alcohol can impact your perceptions and response time, making it more challenging to operate a vehicle safely. The easiest way to prevent these risks is never to drive while intoxicated.
Penalties for drunk driving in Italy
Depending on the damage your careless driving causes, breaking the drunk driving laws in Italy might land you in significant legal trouble. Fines, the seizure of a vehicle, and, worst of all, incarceration are all possible penalties. In addition, driving while intoxicated lengthens the journey and puts other people in danger of harm or even death. The following are the consequences of drinking and driving:
1.5 g/l and higher: penalties ranging from €1,500 to €6,000 and 6- to 12-month terms of imprisonment.
164 to 663 euros and 5 fewer points on a driver's licence for drivers under 21 for 0 to 0.5 g/l.
0.5-0.8 g/l carries penalties of €531-2,125 and a 3-6 month suspension of your driver's licence.
Parking
Particularly in urban areas and ancient cities, parking in Italy may be particularly challenging. The authorized parking spaces, often underground, fill up rapidly in the city centre. Parking on the sidewalk or the curb is the only alternative, so parking is free in painted white places.
You must pay for parking and display the ticket outside your vehicle if it is painted blue. Please be aware that time restrictions exist on how long you may park in metered spaces.
Legislation governing the use of seatbelts
Both drivers and passengers travelling by car in Italy are required to buckle up at all times, whether seated in the front or the rear. To lower the number of road deaths, seat belt use was implemented as a safety precaution.
Speed restriction in Italy
Authorities have placed speed cameras on almost every route nationwide to enforce speed limits properly. A speed camera may photograph your automobile, record your speed, and determine if you follow Italy's posted speed restrictions. There is no escape from Italy's speed cameras, which can be seen when driving on motorways and along the side of the road.
The speed restrictions are as follows:
City area:
50km/h
Highway:
130 km/h or 110 km/h in rainy weather
Minor roads outside metropolitan areas:
110 km/h or 100 km/h in rainy weather
Local streets:
90 km/h or 80 km/h in rainy weather
Travel direction
To reduce traffic congestion, roundabouts are used at road junctions. Roundabouts are where most Italian highways end; therefore, you must know the regulations when you're at one. It's essential to understand which lane to use while entering a roundabout. You should drive on the right in Italy and yield to vehicles on the left. Also, signal your destination before leaving the roundabout to alert other motorists.
Age Limit for Driving in Italy
The minimum driving age in Italy varies depending on the vehicle type. The legal driving age in Italy is 18, as in other nations; however, be aware that most car rental companies do not hire cars for anyone under 21. But in Italy, you must be at least 16 years old to operate a motorcycle up to 125 cc and at least 14 years old to use a moped up to 50 cc.
Rules for overtaking
In Italy, overtaking must be done to the left. Therefore, avoid overtaking at junctions, bends, hilltops, railroad crossings, and places with limited sight. In Italy, driving also involves sharing the road with trams. You can pass the tram on the right if there is room. Pass trams carrying passengers at a safe distance. Be sure you can see where you're going before passing and that no other car is coming up behind you. Please turn on your turn signal to alert other drivers that you are about to pass them. Go back into the right lane after passing, allowing plenty of space for the vehicle in front of you.
Driving while a visitor
With a current driver's licence and IDP, visitors can easily drive in Italy. As an international driving license Italy permits them to drive on Italian roads. You can go to Italy in your vehicle if you satisfy the prerequisites
