Mustang, Citroen, and K5 Blazer: 15 Cool Rides From the Steve McQueen Car Show
Car shows are cool, but let’s be real. It’s extremely rad when the show is themed around Steve McQueen, the King of Cool. The show took place at Boys Republic, the private all-boys’ school in Southern California that Steve McQueen once attended and later helped support. The Towering Inferno was the theme of this year’s Friends of Steve McQueen Car and Motorcycle Show, and, like the film, the show was filled with everything from a Ford Galaxie 500 to a Chevrolet Nova, and even a handful of iron-piston water pumps. With so much history to be seen and felt, we’ve rounded up 15 of our favorite rides from the show. Take a look, and try not drool too much over these classics.
1970 Chevrolet K5 Blazer
Steve McQueen was the first owner of this off-roading baddie, way before hipsters and millennials started taking a liking to them and Broncos (or anything vintage, to be honest).
1974 Mazda RX-3
This green and yellow beauty is beyond cool. From the “I got 99 problems but a piston ain’t one” sticker to the 20B ITB rotary engine, every detail is on point. [insert Keanu Reeves’ “Whoa”]
1957 Jaguar XKSS
This Jag belonged to McQueen and was his personal favorite even though he nicknamed it The Green Rat. Regardless, the XKSS is an eye-catcher.
1968 Ford Mustang Fastback
It had to be on the list. There were so many of these Bullitt ’Stangs, and having lived in San Francisco, I always fantasized about driving one through the hills of North Beach.
1973 Citroen S.M.
Quick history lesson: The Citroen SM was MotorTrend’s 1972 Car of the Year. I’m deeply in love with hatchbacks, so this high-performance French classic was love at first sight.
1966 Dodge Charger
The hit man in Bullitt drove a ’68 Charger R/T 440, but 1966 was the year the Charger made its debut. And it’s a fastback.
1912 Pierce-Arrow
This original 1912 Pierce motorcycle even won the attention of Chad McQueen. It has a high-compression one-cylinder engine and is one of 32 built.
1957 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia
This Ghia sports a roof rack, which makes any ride a total badass. I could look at this car forever.
1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
This blue babe is said to be one out of 10 Sting Rays in Daytona Blue with a red interior.
1968 Porsche 912 Targa
The soft-window Targa. An absolute gem!
2016 Harley-Davidson Softail Slim S
Vietnam War veteran Richard Bergquist styled his Harley to pay homage to war vets, like Steve McQueen himself. The tags on the box name the men he fought alongside. This bike humbled my soul.
1961 Porsche 356B S90 Roadster
Steve McQueen owned a black ’58 356 Speedster 1600 Super, to be exact, and this Porsche 356 is timeless.
1978 Bultaco 250cc
This restored Spanish two-stroke hill-climber is any motocross enthusiast’s dream.
1953 Cadillac Coupe DeVille
There’s something magical about a vintage car that still has its original paint. This Caddy’s paint hasn’t been retouched, and I appreciate the authenticity it conveys.
1959 Austin-Healey Bugeye Sprite
Thanks to a MotorTrend editor who owns one, I have a soft spot for these cute fellas. The silver color reminds me of a Porsche Speedster, but it also suits this Bugeye well.
