1831 Saturday 1 October
8 40/.. 11 3/4
Breakfast at 9 50/.. at which hour Fahrenheit 57°. and very fine morning - at 10 35/.. sent off by George my letter to 'Honourable Lady Stuart, Richmond Park, Surrey' and to 'Lady Duff Gordon 59 Regency Square Brighton' under cover to 'Thomas Spring Rice Esquire, Treasury Chambers, London' and to my aunt 'Mrs. Lister Shibden hall Halifax Yorkshire' Skimmed over the globe of this morning till 11 -
Off and (with Cameron and George) on board the little boat that carried us to one of 10 tons (we had 2 men) with all 4 sails set (mizen, main, fore and sprit) and which latter, by perpetual tacking, landed us at Brownsea castle at 12 7/.. - highish wind, and a little kicked about and all but sick - pretty looking highish scotch fir wooded little island long and narrow containing said the boatman 1000 acres and 7 miles round - the castle principally a 3 story square tower with lower adjoining buildings all looking damp and forlorn but a pretty good house altogether - Sir Charles Chad's family here in April till July - the island on sale - Sir Charles gave £8000 to Mr. Sturt - laid out money himself and refused £10,000 - now, the boatman, hears 'is rather low' has spent too much 'in travelling so much or something' and must sell - the white castle stands near the south extremity of the island and narrows the entrance into the harbour to about 1/2 mile - I could have come in a carriage thus far 5 miles to where Sir Charles has stables and there is a boat that one can cross at any time same in very bad weather in winter -
Brownsea Castle [Image Source]
On the south west of the island is Studland - saw Mr. George Bankes's cottage embossed in trees - 2 or 3 smaller islands (belonging to Corfe castle) to the west of Brownsea nearer to Wareham channel - the rail road from the clay pits comes along a long neck of land far into the water - there the lighters take it up and convey it to Pool to be shipped for Liverpool - They have 6d. [pence] a ton for lading and unlading and carriage - carry as much as 20 tons, and can sometimes make 10 runs a day - but in winter generally perhaps one run a day, tho' sometimes in very bad weather cannot go at all - walked nearly the whole length of the island - a tolerable farmstead upon it near the castle and some building (1 or 2 houses?) let to, the people who watch the smugglers, and a fancy cottage perhaps near a mile from the castle -
A very few large Elms, and perhaps 1/2 dozen oaks, and a few moss covered ashes and poplars, all the rest Scotch fir that must come down by and by - that on the west worth little or nothing - very poor heath covered moor - not convertible into land likely to grow anything better - saw 2 or 3 horses - and there are 25 head of deer - a nice pond over which a fine flight of wild ducks - there is a little creek full of excellent fish, mullet etc. over which Sir Charles Chad has an exclusive right - the boatman took over a gentleman on Sunday who said he would give £8,000 - more than I would - would not make 1 percent-
Reimbarked at 2 - no tacking and back in 1/2 hour and landed at 2 35/.. - then walked all the length of the quay and about the tower - High street a goodish street with some goodish shops - went into a timber yard - memel pine at 2/5 a foot - American at 1/8 but the best red american 2/. red, yellow, and white american - only red and white memel - the latter far better and more durable closer grained harder more turpentine in it - the effect of better climate? -
Home at 4 10/.. had hair dressed - then asleep till near 5 - then wrote the above of today till 5 40/.. - Ponsonby 28 a head yesterday - news came this morning that he was only 20 a head, and at 5 1/4 an express to say Ashley was 155 a head and they, the 2 candidates, had polled 1700. - Dinner at 5 50/.. exactly the same as yesterday but finished the excellent grapes I brought from Highcliffe - afterwards brought down Letter index from 1 August to the present day and wrote out from from 12 to 19 September from 224 to 228 inclusive of this volume which had been left blank at the time for want of opportunity of writing my journal regularly - it being all in pencil in my pocket note book - all this took me till 10 50/.. - fine day - some heavyish rain tonight about nine - went to my room at 10 55/.. - wind whistling - Lord Ashley's committee sits the next room to me - Lord A-'s [Ashley's] brother come here tonight -

Anne is in the Lake District with Aunt Anne. She exhausts a local guide, because of course she does, and sits down to a dinner of roasted leg of mutton (good, but too fresh killed).
1824
July Friday 30
5 35/60
10 3/4
Got a towel and water and washed as well as I could — Breakfast at 6 1/4 — a basin of boiled (no bread in it) and a good tea-cake — the woman said the young man (aetatis 22 he told me) confessed I had tired him out — asked the woman what I had to pay — 2/ for the guide — as for myself what I had had was not much, I must give her what I pleased — asked her to calculate — why she thought a sup of gin and water was not much and all I had had was not more than 6d — gave her 4/6 for myself besides the 2/ for the guide, with which she seemed much pleased and told her she had been so civil and so she really was, if I ever went that way again I would call and inquire after her —the guide and I were off (from the lion and Lamb, Moses Sewell, Gosforth) 7 37/60 — walked to Calder bridge and stopt at the Stanley arms, Christopher Birkett, at 8 20/60 — Finding they had horses, sent back my guide (who had offered forwards with me to Scale hill, thinking he could find his way by daylight, and agreed for a couple of horses for 10/ — Had a basin of boiled milk — dozed a little — looked into 1 of the 4 quarto volumes of Hutchinson’s history of Cumberland — Tired of waiting — the horses to bring from the field — a saddle to borrow —at last got from their landlord’s — Mr. Stanley of Ponsonby hall, whose gates we passed on our left just before entering the village of Calder bridge — Off at 10 10/60 — Mr. Birkett said the mare had a bit of a limp — so she had and stumbled desperately — jogged on to Calder abbey — about a mile off, a very little way from the road on our right — went to it — some of the great tower — the nave and what might have been a cloister remaining — beautiful ruin — the house (not a large one) joins upon the abbey — Miss Sevenhouse married about a year ago to her cousin Captain Irwin — her 3 younger sisters live at Calder bridge — detained about 10 minutes or 1/4 hour at the abbey — made the man change the saddles, and mounted his horse which merely stumbled now and then and did not limp, but was only a little broken winded and went on shog trot to the other’s walk pretty easily — both of them cart horses — Fine views of Solway firth — it was rather thick or the Isle of Man might have been very distinctly seen—Looked down upon Egremont — St. Bees stretched in a long white line (all the houses hereabouts white washed) along the side of a hill in a valley winding to the sea, Looked beautiful in the distance — admireed the lake of Ennerdale in passing — no wood about it not a tree near it — completely embounded in high mountains — a farm of about a hundred acres at the head of it — all the property of ‘Lord Lowther’ (Lord Lonsdale, I suppose he meant) — his lordship had a great deal of property hereabouts — passed thro’ Kirkland, Lamplugh cross, Loweswater (the lake very pretty) the church and village nearer to Crummock lake then Loweswater and got to Scale hill at 2 1/4 — a fine ride of 16 miles — some part of it reminded me a little of the South downs and while the firth was in sight of my ride in 1813 from Stafford near Dorchester to Weymouth — my aunt had been at Scale hill above 2 hours — got there before 12 — had a basin of boiled milk — off to Crummock lake at 2 50/60 — my aunt could only walk slowly — they called it 3/4 mile, but we were 20 minutes walking it — In the boat on Crummock at 3 10/60 and landed at the Buttermere end at 4 5/60 — the lake shut in by fine mountains but my aunt was at first so frightened she could not admire or enjoy it — we had near landed 1/2 way — a dark cloud passing roughened the water and the breeze blew fresh — only a few houses at Buttermere — the lake very pretty small one — Honister (vide Otley’s guide page 81) crag very fine — Mary of Buttermere married to a farmer who had forty pounds a year of estate and lives about 20 miles off, I forget where — 50 minutes in seeing Buttermere and its lake —reimbarked on Crummock at 5 — landed at 5 50/60 and got to our Inn (Scale hill) at 6 1/4 and sat down to dinner at 6 20/60 — roasted leg of mutton (good, but too fresh killed) peas and potatoes and gooseberry tart and cream — off from Scale hill at 7 1/4 returned thro’ the beautiful rich-looking vale of and pretty vilage of Lorton, and 4 miles from Scale hill got into the Cockermouth road, very good but very hilly — 12 miles — my aunt had come a dangerous bye road in the morning, narrow and no fence from the precipice, only 10 miles but bad that is dangerous — the descent upon Keswick very fine — Fine view of Bassenthwaite water — got to Keswick at 9 1/2 — Very fine day till about nine p.m. — threatening rain while we were at Buttermere, but it held off — a smartish shower as we descended the hill upon Keswick about 9 — Came up to bed at 9 3/4

A Time for Healing
This time, there was no need for her to sneak onto the Vindicaar. This time, she was welcomed.
It had been a couple months since the Legion’s defeat, and since Sargeras, in his final act, doomed Azeroth. The young Kaldorei had not gone to Silithus to witness the wound, but she had heard stories from those in Feralas of the encroaching tensions of the Horde. Nonetheless, the only matter concerning her was reimbarking to the Vindicaar to visit someone.
Someone very important to her.
After going through the portal to Dalaran within Stormwind Keep, Tanefrun found the atmosphere in Dalaran much more relaxed and at ease. The bustle of the citizenry within the floating city was idle mannered and like a breath of fresh air. The young ranger stood still within the Magus Commerce Exchange, feeling a weight off of her shoulders as she no longer saw Argus tainting the skyline.
Carrying a basket of food which she had purchased, containing a menagerie of elven and draenic snacks, she made her way to the beacon on Krasus’ Landing and was teleported to the Vindicaar.
This time, there was no need for her to sneak onto the Vindicaar. This time, she was welcomed.
Her previous escapade onto the Draenei vessel was met with prying eyes, and the one before had changed her life forever. Now the dragoons new her as family of the deceased, and she walked down to the lower level freely. The patter of her shoes echoed throughout the metal floor as she went down the stairs, her glowing white eyes scanning the row of Vigilants. The various lights and crystals reflected on the bodies of the Vigilants, and Tanefrun plopped herself down in front of one that stuck out to her. Because she knew whose soul was stored within the metal body.
Sitting with her legs splayed out, Tanefrun set out the food that she had brought, and she waited paitently; She had one hand getting a bundle of spider legs and the other clutching her shard necklace, which was slowly gaining a soft glow. She munched on the spider legs, and a small look of disgust crept across her face. This was her first time trying the Kaldorei snack, and she didn’t like it! She discreetly spit it out into a napkin, and started picking at some assorted nut bread. Still waiting, she laid back against the wall, fidgeting with her hair. She took a few strands and started to braid it out of boredom, her eyes still fixated on the unmoving Vigilant.
After a while, Tanefrun began to grow impatient and slightly disheartened. “Father…” She spoke quietly, her eyes flicking up towards the inactive Vigilant. “Are you awake?” She inquired, clutching the necklace tighter within her gloved hand. The glow surrounding the crystal grew stronger.
There was a soft hum of metal and magic working in harmony as the Vigilant before her powered up, the lights flickering on. The headpiece panned downwards, looking at the juvenile Kaldorei. “My Little Dove.” Creaking of metal was heard as the Vigilant knelt down before Tanefrun, the whirr of magic being felt in the air rather strongly due to the vibrance of such a noble soul. “Why have you returned? Surely you have much more exciting things to embark on than spending time with an old man like me.”
Tanefrun huffed and frowned at the Vigilant hosting Ashraf’s soul. “I came here because I wanted to, father!” A small amount of tears began to well up in her eyes, but they were melancholy. “Father, I came back to tell you some amazing news. I don’t know if you’re ever powered up, but listen to this.” The small Kaldorei got up onto her feet with a grunt and approached the Vigilant, her arms hugging the shield-arm it wielded. “The Burning Legion is defeated, father.”
There was nothing but silence as Ashraf processed this information. “It… It has?”
“Yes, father.”
“And you are unharmed? You are safe?”
“Yes, father.”
If a Vigilant could have a much needed sigh of relief, that is what was heard throughout the Vindicaar. Tanefrun smiled and sniffed, wiping her face and nose on her sleeve. “You have nothing more to worry about, father. You can rest easy.” She backed away, looking up at the Vigilant’s headpiece. “We are safe.”
A sound akin to light chuckling was heard from the Vigilant. Tanefrun knew it to be Ashraf’s laughter. “And I could not be more relieved. You are safe and well, and I could not ask for better.”
Tanefrun pursed her lips into a smile and hung her head. “I’m safe. But, father…”
The Vigilant’s headpiece canted to the side, curious. “What is it, my little dove?”
The young ranger trembled slightly and sat down before Ashraf, clutching her chest. “Father, I miss you.” Tanefrun hung her head, her hair pooling to the side in its ponytail. She hunched her shoulders, feeling buried emotions come forth once more.
The creaking of metal and whirr of magic was heard once more as the Vigilant housing Ashraf’s soul knelt beside Tanefrun, touching its headpiece to her own head, after beckoning her to look up. "My little dove. Have you forgotten? I am with you. Always. Your necklace allows me that much leverage to make sure you are still alright. I am never not with you. And I could not be prouder to see how you've grown, the community you have found for yourself."
At Ashraf’s proclamation, melancholy laughter came from Tanefrun as she wiped her face on her sleeve once more, looking up to the Vigilant longingly. “A-And I’ve come here to not only tell you that the Legion is gone, but all about everyone I’ve met, father.” She walked back to sit by the food, sniffling still. “I’m gonna be here a while to make up for all the time I was never at home for you, father.”
Mechanical laughter was heard. “Worry not. We have all the time in the world. Tell me about everything.”
