Home at 4 10/.. had hair dressed - then asleep till near 5 - then wrote the above of today till 5 40/.. - Ponsonby 28 a head yesterday - news came this morning that he was only 20 a head, and at 5 1/4 an express to say Ashley was 155 a head and they, the 2 candidates, had polled 1700. - Dinner at 5 50/.. exactly the same as yesterday but finished the excellent grapes I brought from Highcliffe - afterwards brought down Letter index from 1 August to the present day and wrote out from from 12 to 19 September from 224 to 228 inclusive of this volume which had been left blank at the time for want of opportunity of writing my journal regularly - it being all in pencil in my pocket note book - all this took me till 10 50/.. - fine day - some heavyish rain tonight about nine - went to my room at 10 55/.. - wind whistling - Lord Ashley's committee sits the next room to me - Lord A-'s [Ashley's] brother come here tonight -
