if charles really left for rbr and ferrari tried to paint him as a villain... imagine the mess. the drama. the way red bull would engage with it all, making charles and max the anti-heroes of the grid. they'd milk their reputation era to the fullest, i have to admit we would have peak entertainment on our hands

like. i think about this daily. red bull is the perfect team to defect to, especially if your defection is going to be controversial as hell regardless of where you go. like sure, that's their biggest rival, that makes it spicy...

but rbr is already the villain on the grid. they are unapologetically messy and ruthless. they cause problems on main and laugh about it. red bull the brand is all about the adrenaline of being the best, so good you're hated for it. red bull racing takes that one step further with their history of having extremely talented and extremely hated drivers. they have a tp like christian who will throw down for them and shade their enemies in the press without a second thought. they let helmut marko just wander around unsupervised. they encourage the second driver drama and rumors, even if they pretend not to. they send their junior academy drivers out into an arena to see who survives the blood bath. i love them but they are fuckin deranged (on purpose) and it works for them bc that's the brand.

so if you're going to "betray" a team when you're charles leclerc and the team is ferrari and you are basically the biggest love story in f1 ever... you should pick the team that will make it such a fucking scene that ppl will only remember it fondly for the entertainment of it all. and the team that won't pussyfoot around and act apologetic when ppl get mad about it (cough, mercedes).

okay so i had made a note to go back and check this & fortunately this reminded me haha

from the f1tv post-race show:

"Sandwiched is the right word. I told the Australian TV that it was more a panini for us but— (laughter) But yeah, uh, what you can do when you are three side by side like this? I think Charlie has no where to go and I understand that Checo had to turn also, uh, Max was close to the curb but, I think there is nobody to blame on this."

i remember watching it live being extremely endeared by fred calling him charlie. i mean, it's not ultra defensive, but it's a pretty neutral / not-slandering-the-home-favorite answer that makes it clear it's not charles' fault.

i did go back to check christian's answer as a comparison because i was curious:

"Yeah I mean look, it was a great shame to lose Checo. He got a great start and good run down to turn one and... You know, Charles, I think you got to call it a racing accident. Three into 1 never goes and Checo was squeezing, Charles had no where to go, and contact was unfortunately made and that was it."

interestingly, very similar. arguably because that is the only logical answer/explanation of what happened. but i mean... christian does say "three into turn one never goes"... and checo was the one who made it three across. and checo is his driver, so there is no reason for him to be as neutral about charles as fred is, for instance.

I have vague memories of last year during silly season when people kept wanting daniel to indycar and nascar and daniel saying he wasn’t gonna go near ovals that people were saying that he could just do the normal tracks and that they could get another driver to do the ovals, I don’t go there so idk the names and like I get part time elite athlete is weird on the surface but like if it’s a thing that actually already happens in other motorsports why not f1 🤷‍♀️ and midseason driver swaps and reserve drivers needing to fill in happen regularly anyways like it’s not any different to that except there’s like actual planning behind it and would play to a drivers strengths (the downside would be the tracks daniel would probably have to compromise because he’s very good at street races like monaco and singapore), I also feel like marketing would kind of love it because they could give it the whole spin of it being an unconventional thing the other teams aren’t doing and puts the drivers well-being first for triple headers and stuff and then also can make a big deal every other weekend or so being like “guess who’s back!” every time they swap

also like I’m a hoe for the narrative and how Narain Karthikeyan only drove the hrt in 2011 for half the season because daniel stole his seat and his home GP happened to be happening towards the end of the season but hrt still let him race it
