The weird ways 15-to-25-year-old fiction writers use the English language because they don't read OEL books; they learn plot/scene structure from episodic serial narratives that are drawn out for years (usually not purely text-based) and/or require digging through auxiliary materials to piece together important details; learn words and phrases from video content without seeing how they're spelled/formatted in text......... This Will Have Consequences.
#it's gotten much harder to identify who is and is not a 'native english speaker' because kids in non-anglophone countries spend#so much time engaging with english-language stuff online and passing their own permutations on phrases/words on to the kids who#speak english to the people around them offline#so i'm seeing sentence structure that i used to associate specifically with japanese/korean esl people from like. racist kids in texas#which is fine. 'who give a shit.' as they say#but i feel 900 years old when i try to read fanfic for stuff that's popular among the Youths#it's unavoidable and not a problem in itself but i worry that a lot of fucked-up arguments are being sparked by#rapid-linguistic-drift-induced misunderstandings
