District of Maryland | Canadian Man Sentenced to 30 Years in Federal Prison for Production of Child Pornography and Extortion Related to His “Sextortion” of Five Minor Victims | USDOJ

Greenbelt, Maryland – U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis today sentenced Muhammad Luqman Rana, age 33, of City of Vaughan, Ontario, to 30 years in federal prison, followed by lifetime supervised release, for producing image and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children and for extortion related to an online “sextortion” scheme.

Canadian Man is charged with the Production of Children's Pornography and Extortion with regard to five minor victims

The federal grand jury of Maryland delivered an indictment back on December 19, 2019, which was released today, accusing the Canadian man with producing child pornography as well as the extortion. As per court records, Muhammad Luqman Rana, 32, from Vaughan, Ontario, from June 2014 until June 2016, persuaded forced, and coerced five minor victims living across Maryland, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Washington, and New York and Washington, to perform sexually explicit activities to produce child pornography.  They also extorted victims by threat of causing damage to their reputations. Rana is accused of five counts of producing child pornography as well as five counts of extortion through threat to harm an individual's image. If found guilty of all charges, Rana faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison and a maximum sentence of 160 hours in federal prison. A judge from the federal district court will make a decision on any sentence after taking into consideration the U.S. Guidelines for Sentencing and other legal elements. Rana appeared for the first time before his first appearance in the U.S. District Court in Baltimore today before U.S. Magistrate Judge A. David Copperthite.

It is led by U.S.  Attorneys' Offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources in order to find, apprehend and prosecute people who abuse children on the internet in addition to locate and save victims.
