gallery visit: Tate Britain
above photos- my own
artist evaluation: Alvaro Barrington
above photos- left via tate.org.uk , middle + right, my own
The main body of work I saw at the Tate was Alvaro Barrington's commission "Grace". As we entered the museum, we split into groups and were given the instruction to look at, react to and absorb the work without looking at the text panels, in order to form original opinions about the subject matter etc.
This process was very foreign to me as my main objective when visiting museums previously had been to take as many photos as I could of the artwork and text panels due to this making up a large part of my research marks in prior projects. Despite this, I much preferred this new way of viewing artwork as I found that I could retain a lot more information, as well as take time to actually think about and evaluate what I was seeing.
I really loved "Grace" as although I am not from the exact same culture as Barrington, I immediately recognised the inspiration taken from Carnival from my own childhood experiences. Additionally, the domestic installation piece with the plastic covered chairs and rain sound on the corrugated metal 'roof' also reminded me of another childhood memory; a month long holiday took to Ghana around 10 years ago to visit my dad's extended family, many of whom I had never met. The corrugated metal and colour of the wood deeply resonated with me as, I instantly connected the textures from the exhibit to my personal memories and experiences with them in the past.

materials used- newspaper ads, magazine ads + photography
inspired by the sheer amount of ads i'm seeing on a daily basis and how they are forever invading my brain. adpocalypse and the baader meinhof phenomenon!
first piece of art made in my studio space!!!! :')
as exciting and fun as this is, i found everything a little overwhelming so i started with a little collage in my sketchbook (something easy + familiar). very very nice to have a space to take over and make a mess in that isn't the kitchen table/my bedroom floor/the dining room table/any flat surface...

some pictures from today :) after my doctor appointment, my mom and i went to Roxborough State Park for a brief walk. then, on the way home we passed a huge herd of elk just five minutes from our house!
i love living in Colorado. this state is so beautiful, especially this time of year, and it's only going to get prettier once spring and summer are in full swing :)
