@quiet-elegxnce asked:
Ayato stood near the center of the Kamisato estate’s elegant garden, the soft glow of lanterns casting a warm light over the gathering. The atmosphere was serene, filled with the gentle hum of conversation and the clink of tea and sake cups. It was a celebration in honor of Shinobu’s recent achievement—her certification as a lawyer for commercial activity and trade in Inazuma. Ayaka had graciously offered the estate for the occasion, and Thoma and Itto had collaborated to ensure every detail was perfect.
As Ayato mingled with the guests, he made sure to engage each one with his characteristic charm and attentiveness. His focus, however, was drawn to one particular guest—the Crimson Oni. Ayato could not help but notice Itto's frequent and somewhat obvious glances in his direction. Despite the festive mood, Ayato's keen perception picked up on Itto's longing stares, which seemed more pronounced when the other thought no one was looking.
With a practiced smile, Ayato shifted his attention to a group of guests discussing the latest trade developments. But his thoughts remained on Itto. The Oni’s attempts at subtlety were endearing, if not somewhat transparent. Ayato’s amusement was palpable, though he maintained his composure with the grace expected of him.
As the conversation continued, Ayato maintained a gentle but perceptive gaze on Itto. He knew well enough why the Oni was so distracted. The evening’s quiet, cozy atmosphere seemed to bring out a softer side of Itto, one that was more vulnerable and, perhaps, more aware of the feelings he tried so hard to conceal.
Tumblr media
He was incredibly glad that the Estate had been offered as a venue for celebrating Shinobu's latest achievement. She was always going above and beyond for those around her, helping out even when it wasn't asked of her. Perhaps because it wasn't. She was good at a lot of things and adding another certification to her skillset. The Oni couldn't say he was surprised that his Deputy had done such a thing. She'd talked of getting a few certificates pertaining to things specific to Inazuma before, and he'd been all for her doing so.
Sunset eyes would find themselves lingering upon Ayato as the other was illuminated by the lanterns. It was beyond the scope of how he normally looked toward the other man, for sure, and yet he still tried to will the urge to watch the other as he was away. A bite to his lip would happen as he attempted to look away. Likely heading to get another sakazuki of sake and maybe something to eat. Anything to distract himself from his constant staring. He'd found his eyes going to Ayato much more often than he normally looked at the other and his gaze was lingering far longer than he intended for it to.
Watching as the other mingled with the guests, chatting, and looking as if he were in his element among people. The Yokai hung back, not really involving himself with many discussions. The guests were fine with him, none of them disliked him to any degree, and yet he found himself unable to really talk to any of them for any length of time. Not because of his lingering looks toward his 'bro' but he honestly didn't have anything to talk about. Quite a number of people had asked him if there was a special person in his life but he would expertly change the subject matter to Shinobu's accomplishment with a practiced ease that most people weren't aware he had.
Tumblr media
A guest would likely pose a similar question to Ayato, asking if there was anyone the Commissioner had his eye on. Should the taller male hear the question due to the quiet atmosphere he may look in that direction once more. Perhaps even longer than he'd gazed before, perhaps that one would be a look of worry though he'd try to play it down, it wasn't as if there was any chance there. Not for him and he'd resume trying to disguise what he felt. Maybe even go as far as to turn away so he wasn't staring.
As tempted as he was to walk outside into the chilly air he refrained, not because he wanted to hear if Ayato did have his eye on someone, but because he was beginning to worry that he'd been caught by more than Ayato with his stares.

@quiet-elegxnce asked:
The moon hung high in the ink-black sky, casting a soft silver light over the dense canopy of Chinju Forest. Kamisato Ayato moved quietly, his steps barely rustling the leaves beneath his feet. Tonight, there were no retainers or soldiers in his shadow—only the soft chirping of nocturnal insects and the distant rush of a nearby stream.
Dressed in the plain clothing of a commoner, with a dark mask concealing the lower half of his face, he felt a rare sense of freedom. The crisp night air nipped at his skin, but he hardly noticed. It was then that he spotted a flash of green hair. Ayato paused mid-step, his keen eyes narrowing in recognition. Even in the dim light, he could make out the familiar figure of Kuki Shinobu, the deputy of the Arataki Gang. She moved with purpose, her pace steady as she approached an old, abandoned shrine, her expression focused yet unreadable.
Ayato stayed hidden in the shadows, curious and cautious. He considered his next move, debating whether to reveal himself or remain a silent observer. After all, if Shinobu was here, it was likely for a reason… and he had no intention of interfering without cause. What could she possibly be doing here at this hour? He took a step forward, careful to stay out of sight, but keeping a close watch on the woman ahead.
Tumblr media
She walked with a purpose that very few people would understand, mask still affixed to the lower half of her visage as her silent steps increased. What possible reason did Shinobu have for being in Chinju Forest at an hour long after her Boss and the boys were likely in their beds, sleeping? Only one of those four would know. After all, he was very aware that the Deputy of the Arataki Gang had feelings for someone.
Tumblr media
She was well aware of her surroundings. Her training gave her that - plus, her Vision allowed her to get a read from the remnants of the Electro energy in the air. After all, a storm had only recently passed, and while she was dry NOW, had Ayato spotted her about half an hour before, she'd have been all but soaked as she'd been dancing in the rain. Only Itto knew she enjoyed doing such a thing, and had he been awake, it was very likely that the Oni would simply have joined her in reverie. He never judged her when she spoke to him, given how high in regard he held her - she knew he never would, even IF it came to light just who she had feelings for.
Of course, she was unware of just how well versed in 'Shinobuese' the Boss of the Arataki gang was. He was already well aware of who it was though he had no reason to speak of it to the man in question. No. There was no need for that. After all, nothing she'd done had changed how she felt for who it was. No amount of time away. No distancing herself not distraction. Nothing kept her mind off HIM for very long.
And that, was her purpose at the shrine.
Kneeling, she'd quietly mutter something under her breath before lightning some incense, two small sticks. Short ones, people often burnt due to the belief that it was capable of dispelling fear. Now, what could she POSSIBLY be afraid of? As a young woman from a prominent clan herself and all.

"That's good to know, I like that she's more than capable of defendin' herself, Ayato, and I know ya like that too,"
Ayaka was important to both of them, though much more so to Ayato himself, since he was her older brother. While the was their friend, the Oni wasn't actually family to either of them. Though, the thought was nice. He'd never be 'allowed' to officially be viewed as such though, not if the elders got their way. They didn't approve of the Yokai even being friends with the Kamisato siblings more than likely.
"Good, that's all I can ask of ya. I want ya to be happy, Ayato, both of ya deserve to be, and ya deserve to pick who ya wanna court, date, and maybe even marry someday."
He knew marriage was a fairly big thing for humans, but even more so for those who were noble born, such as the Kamisato siblings. Though, perhaps when it came to the elders it was much more so them trying to push old time beliefs into the young head of the clan, but then again maybe not, just the same. He didn't know how the noble clans of Inazuma worked, despite being from a noble line of Oni himself. Not that he knew that bit of information at present.
"I bet they don't even talk to ya themselves, they send some lackey that is too scared of 'em to say no, but I can see ya smilin' kindly while listenin' and then turnin' down whatever ridiculous custom they try to force onto ya."
He'd caught on a bit back, but as the flirting had grown more and more obvious to him, he couldn't just play it off anymore. There was no reason to do so. Not when he harbored feelings himself. Of course, he tried to keep them under wraps, even if his struggles were in vain. The fact that Ayato spoke to him with such a blatantly flirty tone to his voice made the taller male almost the same shade of red as his Oni lineage; Crimson.
"Now that just ain't fair, Ayato."
Tumblr media
Lips quirked downward in a faint pout, though the expression lasted for but a moment. It was a good thing the taller male hadn't been eating or drinking anything when Ayato blatantly flirted with him.
"Guess I just never thought I would ever land on your radar in that kind of sense. It's... nice to know though, even if you're over here makin' me the same color as my markings."
There was no reason for him to deny that, not that he would. After all, he was a great deal of things but a liar wasn't one of them, and bending the truth was the same as lying. He just needed to hope that Ayato didn't ASK him how he truly felt for him. Not that the other man was one to pry. Meddle? Yes, absolutely. Pry? Not in the slightest.
At least, not when it came to matters of the heart.
Ayato’s gaze softened as he listened to Itto's words, noting the clear warmth and affection the Oni had for Kohaku. That protective, fatherly care—it was something Ayato admired in Itto, though it wasn’t a quality the elders would recognize in their archaic view of what made someone a “worthy” match. Ayato, however, didn’t share their perspective.
He gave Itto a small, knowing smile. It wasn’t hard to see that Itto was holding back, believing himself unworthy, even as he encouraged Ayato to follow his own heart. Ayato, in turn, couldn’t help but admire that selflessness, but at the same time, he found it frustrating. Itto deserved better than to think so little of himself, especially when it was so obvious to Ayato how much the Oni had to offer.
“I wouldn’t worry too much about Ayaka, she knows her way around a sword...” Ayato added, a light chuckle escaping his lips. “I’ll certainly do my part to scare off anyone who doesn’t have her best interests at heart. But the same goes for me—I won’t be settling for anyone the elders ‘approve’ of, just because they meet some criteria. Whoever I choose… it’ll be because they’re right for me. Not for them.”
The Oni’s response about not being good enough for anyone did tug at Ayato’s heart. The insecurities Itto was carrying were painfully clear, and Ayato wanted to refute them—but he knew better than to do so outright. Itto wasn’t the type to be easily swayed by reassurances. Instead, Ayato leaned into the humor of the situation, letting the Oni’s teasing remark about the elders lighten the mood. “Maybe they do it for entertainment,” Ayato mused, his tone amused. “It’s either that or they’re still trying to cling to whatever control they think they have left.”
When Itto finally broached the subject of Ayato’s behavior, asking if he was practicing flirting, Ayato’s lips curved into a smirk. He knew exactly what Itto was asking—whether all these subtle glances, touches, and comments were intentional. And they most certainly were. Ayato leaned just a little closer, his eyes locking with Itto’s as he answered.
Tumblr media
"Practice?" Ayato’s voice took on a playful lilt as he tilted his head slightly, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Tell me, Itto, why would I need to practice something I’m already quite good at?" He winked, a playful, teasing gesture that was unmistakable in its intention, the flirtation clear and direct now. Itto had caught on, and Ayato was no longer going to hide it, clearly enjoying the way he was making the Oni squirm just a little.

He knew that for a lot of nobles, the elders had very high expectations for them, especially the clan heads like Ayato. The taller male didn't find the notion funny himself, the Oni just merely believed that everyone, no matter their station should be allowed to pick who they dated, married, or had children with. Obviously he would never be even considered as a good partner for anyone who had status. Not by the elders, at least, but he didn't really mind much. He couldn't let it get to him. That was just a fact of life.
"I'm glad ya ain't gonna let 'em dictate yours or Ayaka's lives, ya deserve the same as the common folks get, the option to choose,"
Never mind that the Yokai just generally felt it was not only unfair, but not right that they couldn't choose what they wanted out of love. He was happy to hear that Ayato wasn't going to allow the elders to control him or pick for him. At least he knew now that the other man would pick someone due to love, not because is was approved, let alone forced on him. He knew he was a fairly open book himself, his attraction to Ayato hadn't been something that just happened though. It had built up over time, but he knew, even if Ayato for some reason picked him? It would never gain the elders approvals.
"Good, ya keep at it. I'm sure whoever ya wind up pickin' will be worthy of ya and your love. Same for Ayaka, though I'm pretty sure you're gonna do your part as her older brother and scare off anyone who ain't bein' true in that regard."
He'd watch as Ayato narrowed his eyes at the idea of there being an 'approved' list of possible candidates for the Commissioner. The taller male wouldn't put it past the elders of the Kamisato clan to do such a thing, actually. He knew they were 'old fashioned' and fairly stuck in their ways, so he did hope Ayato could get what he wanted without them interfering because it didn't align with what THEY wanted. It wasn't their life, it was the other male's and the Oni just wanted to see him genuinely happy with whoever he decided to court, date, or possibly marry.
"I dunno, I wanna know why they feel the need to try forcin' ya and Ayaka to meet a bunch of random suitors at various times. It ain't fair to either of ya to have to endure that kinda stuff if ya ask me."
He knew Ayato had sort of asked him, but not entirely. The larger male was anything but traditional, and he most certainly was NOT what any clan elders would view as optimal partner material for anyone. He was a Yokai, a Crimson Oni, and while he was the last of his clan - nobody seemed to know anything about his bloodline. Or if they did they kept it from reaching his ears. As if they couldn't afford to have him learn of his heritage or something. As Ayato mentioned that Kohaku was lucky to have him, his own expression would soften a bit. He agreed and he knew his adopted son would as well.
"I know Kohaku is lucky to have me, and he'd agree with that, but... I ain't sure 'anyone' would be lucky to have me. Datin'... I mean that kinda thing probably ain't really in the cards for someone like me."
And there it was, the true reason he was holding back from things. While his attraction, or affection toward Ayato was fairly obvious to the other man, the taller male wasn't 'seeing' that. Or rather, he was acting as if he wasn't, rather than 'making things awkward' despite how blatant the other man was being toward him. It wasn't as if anyone could hear them talking, and nobody was paying the pair any attention, really.
"Ya think havin' the elders meddle in your life is a hobby? Man, I wonder how bored they get if they gotta do that kinda thing to entertain themselves."
He knew it was more than that, of course, the elders wanted to see the various bloodlines get passed on. To see the clans prosper. He just really felt they were going about it the wrong way. Forcing someone into a relationship simply to do that kind of thing was wrong on every level. He was actually having a hard time NOT noticing how Ayato was being with him, while they were just talking to one another. The glances, touches, fairly blatant flirting though subtle, he recognized it. As the other complimented the pastry he was eating the taller male would chuckle softly.
Tumblr media
"He asked me to write the recipe for the fillings down as well as how to prepare the pastry itself, and which finishin' sugar I use, too. Now... uh not to change the subject but - are ya tryin' to practice flirtin' or somethin'?"
He asked the question with a somewhat serious expression but Ayato would likely understand what he was really asking as being 'are you actually flirting with ME?'.
Ayato’s nose scrunched in mild disapproval at the mention of an "approved" list. His lips curved in a subtle, yet decisive smile, but the flicker of seriousness in his eyes betrayed the annoyance he felt about the notion. He took a slow breath before responding, his voice calm but firm, the weight of his resolve apparent.
"Itto," he began, his gaze lingering on the Oni with a warmth that softened the weight of his words, "I understand that the elders may have their expectations, but it’s not their choice. It never was. My life, my decisions… they belong to me. And as for Ayaka, I would never let them dictate her future either." His voice grew more resolute as he continued, brushing off the idea of being shackled by such traditions. "They can bother me, they can attempt to push their ideals, but I will not let them influence anything that changes the trajectory of our lives—especially when it comes to something as personal as choosing a significant other."
Tumblr media
Ayato paused, his eyes narrowing slightly, a hint of fire within the usual calm. "I won’t have my life reduced to a list of ‘approved’ candidates, and I certainly won’t allow the elders to diminish what I want—what makes me happy—just because it doesn’t align with their narrow views." His words held a conviction that could only come from someone who had thought about this more deeply than he let on. The silence between them settled for a brief moment, a comfortable pause, as Ayato’s gaze shifted away briefly, as if reflecting on his own defiance. Then, his expression softened again, the warmth returning as his eyes found Itto’s once more. He leaned slightly closer, voice quieter now but no less sincere. "Besides, why should it matter to them, or anyone else."
There was something more in his tone this time—something that lingered beneath the surface, words unsaid but implied in the way his gaze lingered, softer, more intimate. "Kohaku is lucky to have you," Ayato added, his voice gentler now. "And… I think anyone would be lucky to have you. The elders, for all their insistence, don't define my happiness or my choices. And if they ever try to, well…" He gave a casual shrug, a playful smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "They'll have to find a new hobby."
As he finished speaking, Ayato couldn't help but wonder to himself when Itto would finally see what was so clear—that Ayato’s interest in him was real, growing, and possibly stronger than even the Oni realized. He often mused that Itto, with all his perceptiveness about those he cared for, seemed to blind himself when it came to his own worth. And Ayato? Well, Ayato had already made up his mind. Because the truth was, he wasn’t hiding his feelings, at least not in any meaningful way. He’d touched Itto, lingered in conversation, given more personal glimpses into his life than he offered anyone else.
He took one of the delicate pastries Itto had been eyeing and savored the sweet, flaky bite. His approval was clear in the satisfied hum he gave as he finished it. Then his gaze returned to Itto, an almost playful light dancing in his eyes. "These are excellent, by the way. Thoma really outdid himself with your recipe."

He loved talking about his adopted son and that would be obvious from his expression, and the look in his eyes. The younger Yokai was someone he clearly held dear. While yes, most people may have tried to drop him with the other Kitsune known, namely the Guuji, he'd never even thought about it. Not once.
"Well, in the beginnin' it wasn't really stable... but I told ya all about the time the Gang and I were homeless, livin' in a tent we had to repair far more often than not. Kohaku was there with us, he helped the boys gather root vegetables, sweet flowers, and mint every now and then. He's a good kid,"
He listened as Ayato went into talking about how he would react if he were ever in the position to consider the Oni as a partner, the mere concept, or rather, the THOUGHTS therein - made the larger male red once more. The fact that someone he cared about, far more than as a friend, was saying things like that somewhat casually, even? It flustered the taller male more than the mere touches had. He had no reason to hide or disguise his reaction though. Because it wasn't a bad one.
"Ah... yeah I get that, but we both know I'd never land on the list of 'approved' people for ya, Ayato. I appreciate your honestly though, I ain't... a woman and I'm pretty sure the Elders wouldn't even give me a second glance because of that reason alone."
He was aware of the Elders trying to find a match for Ayato, every one of them as far as he was aware had been women. Two men couldn't have children together, after all, now, thee were likely other means for a same-gender couple having children who would be blood related to one of them. Of course, marriage was something Ayato was expected to do, that didn't mean the other would. He just had to hope the other was able to find someone who made him happy and kept him that way. He was all but certain that he stood no chance. Which was why he was trying so hard to keep his feelings in check.
"An honor, huh? I dunno if anyone else would view it that way, but thank ya for that. It... means a lot comin' from someone I respect as much as I respect ya, Ayato. Knowin' how ya feel about me bein' well... a dad, it's nice."
He did feel that there was more than a little thing hidden within the other male's words there, but he didn't want to dwell on it. He'd already come to terms with being the furthest thing from 'good for Ayato' in a romantic sense. In that way, he was friend zoning himself, as long as the other was capable of being happy with whoever he wound up with, the Oni would be happy for him. His friend deserved that after all the hard work he put in. However, he'd want Ayato to actually be happy and not just putting on a front. So he hoped that whoever the other picked was someone who made and kept him truly happy.
"Sumeru city has a little coffee shop that sells chocolate, I think. I was only in the city briefly so I dunno for sure."
He'd done a bit of traveling, the other man knew he had, too. There was always Port Ormos, there was an array of things there. As well as places to get drinks and food. Though he felt the main city might be a better option for chocolate. Especially if the other was wanting only the finest quality to give to Kohaku. Man, the kid was going to love Ayato for the various chocolate alone.
"If ya can't get into contact with Master Diluc, I could. I gave him one of the little things I make for friends - uh, long story there, but I could send Ushi to visit him wherever he is with a letter, and probably some Mora to cover the expenses if it's needed."
At this point, it seemed like Ayato was going to get Kohaku chocolate from each nation, which would make the Kitsune quite happy. Of course, he'd be happy with some truffles or something like that too. When it came to chocolate as long as it wasn't bitter the younger male loved it. Ayato wanting to bond with his son made his chest warm, it was a nice feeling, knowing that the other wasn't viewing him any differently despite him having an adopted son.
It wasn't so much that he was oblivious to the other male's affections, far from it, actually, he just wasn't reading INTO those soft actions. The touches, the lingering gazes, those things? He was just trying to keep himself where he felt he belonged. As a friend. He knew how he felt already, he'd known for some time, but he wasn't the right fit. Not the right... person. He didn't consider himself a person at all. Something even Shinobu could attest to. It was probably a good thing people were paying no attention to the Oni and the Commissioner by the snack table at the moment. Given the way they may be looking at one another and all that.
Tumblr media
"Ya know, all this talk about how ya wouldn't hesitate despite me havin' a son, it's nice. Ayato, I appreciate ya bein' honest with me."
He'd let the words sink in before taking a bite out of one of the sweet treats he'd taught Thoma how to make, they were a fairly delicate sweet too, flakey, buttery, and they were filled with custard, chocolate, or fruit jam. Sprinkled with just a bit of finishing sugar too. HIs eyes would seemingly sparkle in the light. As if saying 'I know.' without actually vocalizing it at all.
Ayato smiled, watching Itto’s earnest expression, his eyes shining with pride as he spoke about Kohaku. The Oni had a way of telling stories that made Ayato feel the weight of his words — not in a burdensome sense, but in a way that felt grounding. The love Itto had for Kohaku was undeniable, and Ayato couldn't help but admire the strength and warmth that emanated from him.
“You know, Itto," Ayato began, voice softer than usual, "I don’t think you give yourself enough credit. The way you’ve taken care of Kohaku, the way you talk about him—it’s clear you’ve given him something far more valuable than anyone else ever could: stability, love, and a family. Those things matter far more than blood, and honestly, if it were me… if I were ever in the position to consider you as a partner, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second because you have a child.” He could not be any more obvious than this, could he? He wondered if the Oni would pick that up. But for now, he went along with the conversation. His gaze softened as he looked directly into Itto's eyes, his voice carrying sincerity with every word. "In fact, I’d consider it an honor to be a part of that kind of life. And I wouldn’t have it any other way."
He let that statement hang in the air for a moment, his eyes lingering on Itto’s for just a little longer than usual. Ayato wasn't one to mince words when it came to something this important, and while he hadn’t explicitly revealed his feelings yet, he wanted Itto to understand that there was no room for doubt about his respect—or admiration, for that matter.
Then, with his characteristic wit, Ayato shifted back to a lighter tone. "As for the chocolate… well, if it wins me points with Kohaku, I’ll be sure to bring the finest. I suppose we could have Fontaine, Liyue, and Mondstadt covered. Sumeru, perhaps, if I can track something down." He chuckled lightly. "From Mondstadt, I could as Master Diluc for some too. He's been kind to us in the past."
Itto’s laughter in response was warm, a sound Ayato always found himself fond of. The Oni had such a big presence, yet there was a gentleness to him that others might easily overlook. But Ayato? He saw it. He saw the way Itto treated the people around him, especially those he cared for.
Tumblr media
As the conversation continued and they joked about Kohaku’s antics, climbing onto iceboxes and curling up in odd places, Ayato found himself thinking, When will he realize? Itto’s openness and earnestness were endearing, but somehow, the Oni seemed completely oblivious to the signs Ayato had been giving him for some time now. The touches, the lingering looks, the way Ayato made time for him despite the busyness of his own life—it was all so clear to anyone else who might’ve been paying attention. But Itto… well, Ayato supposed Itto's focus had always been on caring for others.
One day, Ayato thought to himself, smiling slightly, when Itto finally realizes, wouldn’t that be something?

"I get that, Ayato, I do, and I appreciate it. The sentiment is a nice one, just, knowin' someone I respect holds me in high enough regard to say such a thing,"
He really did too, the Oni respected Ayato a LOT. Maybe even more than he ever made obvious. Of course, there was more to it than mere respect now, but he was doing his best to keep that under wraps. And failing. He knew that there were things expected of the other male, and as such, felt that there was literally no way he'd be accepted by the elders. Not in the way that Ayato and the others of the Yashiro Commission accepted him, of course, and most certainly NOT as a romantic candidate for the other.
"I found Kohaku by the water, he was barely breathin' so I had Shinobu help me get him stable before pickin' him up and headin' to where we'd been campin' at the time. He was so scared... he thought I was gonna EAT him. As far as I'm aware Oni have never eaten Kitsune, and if they did that's just weird to me. It took Shinobu and the boys to calm him down while I made some soup for him at the fire. It was nothin' major, but it was nutritious, tasty, and helped him get some of his strength back."
He lost a lot off sleep at that time, nursing a young, every sick Kitsune back to health was taxing, but it was also rewarding. It only took the kid waking up a few times to see the larger Yokai keeping watch, and speaking to him for the smaller male to grow more comfortable around him. Once the kid had recovered from his fever he started sleeping in a pile with the others. Sapping the larger male's warmth on the chillier nights. It'd been years now since he found the kid, and now he was his son. He was very proud to call Kohaku his son, even though they're different Yokai, that didn't weaken the bond they shared with one another.
"Well, chocolate is made from cocoa 'beans' but they're not beans at all, which I'm sure you're aware of. I get him one of those thick imported Fontainian bars of chocolate every so often. I also make him some chocolate treats in the kitchen. Funny enough, for a Kitsune? He despises tofu, says the texture is gross."
He'd chuckle softly, the laughter soft, yet genuine as he did so. Talking to Ayato was always so nice, they could talk about pretty much any topic unrelated to work and he'd enjoy it. That wasn't to say he didn't enjoy talking about work, he just preferred to keep their chats more casual. Unless they were talking about how things were going with the Oni's rebuilding efforts. He'd shake his head softly the smile never dropping from his lips all the while.
"He's apparently never been fond of beans so he was beanless even before we met in the first place. I tried to help him find his parents, but even after so many years I never found anyone who smelt similar to him."
The household had times of chaos, but for the most part, everyone was just doing their own thing. There were a few times where someone had to get Kohaku down from atop the icebox, or a book shelf, the kid was odd but that was what made him fit in with the rest of the Gang. Everyone loved him, and they'd been calling him the Oni's son long before it was made official.
Tumblr media
"The amount of times one of the boys came to me and let me know Kohaku was on a bookshelf, or the icebox is real funny to think of. He's often just sleepin' somewhere in this tiny little fox form. Who knows, maybe you'll spot him somewhere strange whenever ya manage to come by the Gang's place."
Knowing that Ayato wanted to meet his son made a warmth well up in the taller male's chest, a good feeling. One that made him quite happy, even. Knowing that someone he valued so much wanted to meet the one he'd adopted, and get to know him? It was a great feeing, and he just had this feeling that Ayato and Kohaku would get along fantastically. Now, if only he could manage to figure out why the other kept touching him so often. It was doubtful he'd think it was because the other harbored feelings for him. After all, that'd be quite silly.
Ayato listened intently as Itto spoke, a gentle smile playing on his lips as the Oni described his relationship with Kohaku. It was heartwarming to see how much care and affection Itto poured into raising the young Kitsune. Ayato admired that deeply, more than he had words for. There was something profoundly endearing about the way Itto spoke of Kohaku—so openly, so proudly. The Oni’s worries about being a father scaring off potential partners seemed almost irrational to Ayato. How could anyone not see the strength and goodness in Itto?
The light banter faded from Ayato’s expression, replaced by something more sincere as he leaned in slightly, making sure Itto understood the weight behind his words. "Itto, if it were me... I wouldn’t just accept you and Kohaku. I’d embrace both of you, without hesitation, and without a second thought," Ayato said softly, his tone gentle yet unwavering. There was no trace of his usual playfulness in that moment, just honest vulnerability. He could feel the air grow a little heavier with the significance of his words, but he didn’t shy away from it. "You being a father doesn’t scare me, and it shouldn’t scare anyone who truly sees you for who you are. It’s part of what makes you incredible. You’ve taken in someone who needed you, cared for them, raised them, and given them a family. That’s… admirable, Itto. That’s something anyone would be lucky to be part of."
Ayato's gaze softened even more as he continued, eyes locking onto Itto’s, making sure the Oni could feel the sincerity behind each word. "Whoever is fortunate enough to be with you should want to stand by your side, not just for you but for Kohaku too. That’s the way it should be. And if someone can’t see that, well… they aren’t worthy of you."
His fingers briefly brushed against Itto’s arm again in that same quiet, reassuring gesture, but this time there was no lingering uncertainty in his actions. He wasn’t pulling back or second-guessing himself. He wanted Itto to know that he meant every word.
Tumblr media
After a beat, Ayato leaned back with a small chuckle, letting the warmth return to his expression, though the sincerity in his eyes remained. "Now, as for your Kitsune... I’ll make sure to bring the finest, bean-free chocolates from all over Teyvat for him," he said with a teasing smile, knowing full well that the bean-free stipulation was just as much for Itto as it was for Kohaku. "I wouldn’t want him to think I’m unworthy of being one of his favorite people."
Ayato’s voice grew playful again, but the affection in his tone was undeniable. "Besides, I imagine living with you, he’s had to adapt to a life devoid of beans entirely. I wouldn’t want to be the one to ruin that balance." He couldn’t help but laugh a little at the thought, imagining Itto and Kohaku’s household, chaotic but filled with warmth. The thought of being part of that, even in a small way, stirred something deeper in him, though he wouldn’t press it too far for now.
"Truthfully, I’d love to meet him sometime," Ayato added, more earnestly. "And if he’s anything like you say, I think we’ll get along just fine." Ayato's gaze lingered on Itto, the fondness clear, though he wasn’t sure if the Oni would recognize just how deep that fondness ran. It was difficult to mask feelings entirely in moments like this, but for now, he’d let Itto take from his words what he wanted to. All that mattered was that Itto knew he wasn’t alone, and that there was someone who already saw him—and Kohaku—as a package deal worth treasuring.

He knew what being a Yokai orphan was like and it wasn't something he'd wish upon anyone. He knew nothing of his true heritage or anything about his family, or clan, but that didn't seem to bother him much anymore. He knew the information was lost to time at this point in his life. If anyone had any information about his kind it would have to be someone who remembered the Crimson Oni at all, really.
"When I first met him, he kept bitin' me, literally, but over time, after I took care of him, and kept him safe... and fed, he warmed up to me. He started off callin' me just 'Itto', but after a while he started callin' me dad,"
It meant a lot to him that Kohaku viewed him in such a way, while they were different types of Yokai, he showed that it didn't matter if they were blood related or not. He was going to give the kid his best life. While it may have taken him a while to be able to adopt him he'd done so the moment he was able to. While the Oni wasn't that much older than Kohaku was physically, he was considerably so when chronological age came into play, even if he wasn't aware of that himself. It was fine, really.
He was curious about how much Ayato was touching him but he wasn't sure he should ask. So he'd refrain from doing so for now after all, they were friends, and friendly touches were normal.
"Ya were born into a family with status, power, and Mora, but ya didn't treat me like I was a street urchin or anythin' like that, and it means a lot to me."
Tumblr media
He'd offer a genuine smile at the other male, though that pink coloration still covered his cheeks for the time being. It wasn't unheard of for him growing flustered to some extent when someone touched him. Of course, with the other it was a bit more than a 'little bit' like was common to see when other people came into play. He was touch and affection starved, while, yes, he'd grown up being hugged, and held by Granny Oni until he was too big for her to do so, it was different when it was anyone else.
"Granny adores Kohaku, too. I mean, the chance of me ever havin' an actual blood related child is pretty small anyway. I know if it ever happened Kohaku wouldn't worry about bein' neglected or anything, I mean, the kid is sixteen now, but still."
He'd chuckle softly, he'd been in Kohaku's life since the teen was eight, which would have set the larger Yokai at 'eighteen' at the time, himself. He remembered the Kitsune asking if he was going to eat him which was a very odd question to be asked, since he was fairly sure that Yokai didn't eat one another in the first place. He knew of the small group that were friends with the Archon at one point. An Oni, a Tengu, and a Kitsune, if the story was to be believed.
"I think... I'm just worried that me bein' a dad is gonna scare anyone off, I don't plan on hidin' that I adopted a kid from any prospective.. er... 'mate', but findin' someone who is willin' to be with me to that extent will be an ordeal and a half anyway."
Talking to Ayato was always so easy for him. He enjoyed the other male's company, and viewed him as a very close friend. His not quite hidden feelings notwithstanding, of course, he'd have no idea that the other was having similar feelings at the same time. Even if he did it was doubtful he'd really do or say anything about them. Being a father to Kohaku wasn't the only thing keeping him from finding someone after all.
"Course I trust ya, you're one of my closest friends, and someone I trust implicitly. I think ya would like Kohaku, maybe if ya stop by the Gang's place at some point ya might get to meet him. I think ya would get along with him, actually. If ya bring chocolate for him you'll easily become one of his favorite people."
Ayato's gaze softened as Itto shared more of his story, his usual composed demeanor shifting to something warmer. He could hear the deep care and love in Itto’s voice when he talked about his adopted son, Kohaku. That kind of devotion spoke volumes about Itto's character, and Ayato admired him for it, more than the Oni likely realized.
"You've been through a lot, Itto," Ayato began, his voice gentle. "To have those kinds of words and ideas beaten into you—it's hard to undo that, I know. But you’ve shown strength, not just by surviving it but by creating something good from it. Adopting Kohaku, taking him in, giving him a home and a family..." Ayato allowed a small pause, his fingers briefly brushing along the side of Itto’s arm in a reassuring gesture, though he couldn’t help but feel a deeper pull toward the Oni, something he kept hidden for now. "That's something only very few people can do and I know you are one of them who is capable for it."
"I understand more than you think. We're both orphans, after all, though I had the fortune of being born into a family with status. But that didn’t stop me from feeling alone after losing my parents. I understand why you adopted Kohaku. You’re giving him the kind of love and support that your grandmother gave you."
Tumblr media
There was something quietly proud in his expression now, admiration glinting in his eyes as he spoke. "It’s not something many people would do, but it shows how deep your capacity for love is. It’s admirable, Itto." Internally, Ayato felt his own feelings stirring, drawn to the Oni’s earnestness and the depth of his care. The more Itto opened up, the more Ayato found himself appreciating everything about him. But now wasn’t the time to delve into his own emotions.
Outwardly, he remained composed, offering reassurance instead. "As for finding someone... Itto, the person who is meant to be with you will accept both you and Kohaku. They’ll see what you see in him and love him as you do. You don’t have to worry about someone rejecting you for being a father. Anyone worth being with will love all parts of you, including the people you care for."
Ayato gave Itto a fond look, one that hinted at deeper feelings but masked them under the guise of friendship. "Thank you for telling me all this. I know it wasn’t easy for you to open up like that, but I’m honored that you trusted me with it." His voice softened even further. "You don’t have to carry all of this alone, you know. I’m always here if you need to talk or if you need anything. You matter, Itto—whether you realize it or not."

"It ain't that I'm just thinkin' it. It's been beaten into my skull that I'll never be good enough,"
Not to mention the other thing, he had a son, a Kitsune he adopted a while back. The teen was old enough to be more like a sibling to him, but he'd taken him in when the other Yokai was very young, and the Oni officially adopted him once he could. He'd shake his head briefly, likely mulling over how to talk about that. He knew Ayato wouldn't judge him, the other male was one of his best friends, after all.
Tumblr media
"Another thing makin' it hard for me to say anythin' to anyone is the fact that I adopted a Kitsune a while back, he'd been livin' with me for a few years before I was able to do so."
Ayato would know by his tone of voice that he was very fond of the kid he'd taken in, and then adopted after a while. He really was though, Kohaku was a good kid when he wasn't being a pocket-sized menace, but he'd only had to bail him out of jail once, and it was to do with a Hlichurl he'd managed to teach how to dance somehow. He never questioned it. The kid was just good at strangely random things.
"He's a real good kid when he ain't bein' weird, but he's my son now, and if anyone tried to hurt him I wouldn't just sit back and let it happen."
He knew he'd have to be open about having a son with anyone who tried to date him, but he also knew that MOST people would go the opposite direction because of that. He wasn't going to leave an orphan as one. Plus, the Kitsune was a good kid. He fit right in with the older Yokai and the Gang, too. It was nice, and he clearly loved his son even though they weren't related by blood.
"His name is Arataki Kohaku, because he took my last name when I adopted him. Maybe I'll introduce ya to him at some point, I think ya might like him, he's a bundle of chaos sometimes but it ain't in a bad way."
He'd blink a few times as Ayato reached up and wiped his cheek off, the action making the Oni's face flush again. He wasn't sure WHY he was reacting so strongly to such actions. it wasn't even anything remotely romantic. He was going to chalk it up to being touch starved. Yeah, that HAD to be it, and it had nothing to do with his not-so-hidden feelings for his friend. Right. Yep, now if only he could convince himself of that.
"Maybe I am valuable to ya and others, Ayato, but I don't FEEL like I am, if that makes sense to ya."
He'd never been thanked for anything he did, which was one of the main reasons he didn't do things for recognition. If he wasn't being thanked there was no reason to seek out that sort of thing, right? As the other male went on to say that he needed to view his heart as worth sharing, he'd hum, though his cheeks were still faintly tinted pink as he did so.
"I know you're right about that, but I'm still worried, what if the eventual person rejects me cause of my son? I mean, I'd understand, since most people want to have biological kids, but... he's mine and I love him, I ain't gonna abandon him for someone else."
Ayato listened intently, a soft smile on his lips as Itto voiced his concerns. He could sense the layers of vulnerability hidden beneath the Oni’s words, and it made him want to lean in closer. “Itto, bro,” he said with an affectionate lilt, breaking the uncharacteristic formality that had lingered between them. “You might think there are better prospects out there, but I see a lot in you that others may not even recognize yet.”
He noticed how Itto’s insecurities weighed heavily on him, and he nodded, taking in everything the larger male said about guarding his heart. “I understand your fear of being hurt. It’s natural to worry about that. But love, when it’s real, is worth the risk. It’s not about whether someone is a better prospect; it’s about the connection you share.” Perhaps Ayato was sharing his own feeling, albeit in a roundabout way. After all, as per the Oni, he wasn't supposed to know that Ayato was the one who currently had filled the Oni's mind.
He felt his heart warm at Itto’s fierce protectiveness over him. “I appreciate that, Itto. It means a lot to have someone who cares so deeply. But I assure you, I won’t let anyone treat me as a means to an end. Just as you deserve genuine love, I do as well.”
As Itto attempted to clean what might not have been there, Ayato couldn't help but chuckle, shaking his head lightly. "No, no, you're just making it worse..." He leaned in, lightly brushing Itto’s cheek with his thumb, just as he had done moments ago, but this time it was playful. "Well, I am kidding. It is gone now."
Tumblr media
He leaned in a little closer, his gaze steady. “You have to believe in your own worth, Itto. That’s the key. When you recognize how valuable you are to me...and everyone who cares about you, you’ll see that love isn’t a distant dream." Ayato’s thumb brushed along the side of Itto’s face again, lingering for a moment longer. “Trust that your heart is worth sharing, even if it feels fragile. The right person won’t shy away; they’ll cherish it.”

She wasn't used to people other than the Gang touching her in any way, and it was never with intent to tuck a flower into her hair, or above her ear. Perhaps, because it was Ayato she was momentarily caught off-guard. Could anyone blame her? She didn't expect such a gesture from him.
"No, no you're fine, Ayato, I just hadn't expected it,"
Shinobu was always honest, so she'd let him know her reaction was due to how she'd not been expecting it. Why would she think he'd tuck a flower into her hair? While it could be taken as a romantic gesture she wasn't going to think of it as such. With Ayato she knew he did things that felt /right/ in any given moment, there was likely no other reasoning behind it. Better to think of it that way than to read into it and come out disappointed in the end, right?
As he invited her to sit next to him she'd let out a soft laugh before moving to do so.
"I wouldn't peg you as a biter, Ayato. Nor would I think you would want to bite me."
She'd shake her head again, smiling beneath her mask as she did so. His crass sense of humor was far from that, really. She lived with four guys, three of which had much worse things to say about most women. Never her though, they knew she'd kick their asses if they talked about her, and then Itto? He was too busy pining for someone to say anything about her, not that he'd say anything about her anyway, they respected one another too much to really say anything crass or inappropriate about eachother.
"You say it's crass, which makes me wonder if you remember that I live in a house with four men. Three of which have much more crass senses of humor, the fourth one though? Well, we both know him and he respects me too much to say anything strange anyway."
Tumblr media
At his admittance to being used to formality, she'd let out a soft laugh once more, shaking her head as her eyes closed for the briefest moment. She didn't mind that he was relaxing a bit more around her. She liked that he felt at ease enough to do so. Even if some of the things he said were far from things 'proper' for a man of his station.
"I'm glad you're comfortable enough around me to relax as you are. And for the record you don't need to worry about me judging you for anything you say tonight. It'll just be between the two of us."
As he spoke about recognizing why the place gave her peace, she'd smile beneath her mask once again. She was glad she'd bumped into him earlier, while she loved to get some time for herself, his company was more than welcome. As odd as it would be to anyone who may see them together, she knew nobody was around at the moment. They could just peacefully exist with one another in a beautiful and relaxing place.
"You're right, this place is perfect, and peaceful. I don't come here as often as I probably should, but I hardly take time for myself. Itto tries to get me to relax more, but it's hard. I'm just so used to doing so much, relaxing is... it's tough."
Ayato felt the warmth of her gratitude, and a soft chuckle escaped his lips as he took in her reaction. He hadn’t intended to fluster her, yet seeing her momentarily caught off guard by such a simple gesture was endearing.
“I must apologize if I was a bit forward,” he began, his voice gentle but with a trace of amusement. “But I couldn’t help myself. It just felt like that camellia finally found its rightful place.”
He stepped back slightly, his gaze lingering on her for a heartbeat longer than usual. Then, without another word, he turned and sat down on the soft grass at the edge of the cliff, the moonlight reflecting off the water below, creating a serene, almost dreamlike scene. The night was quiet save for the distant sound of waves and the rustling of leaves in the cool breeze. Patting the ground beside him, Ayato tilted his head toward her, the playful glint in his eyes unmistakable.
“Come, sit with me,” he invited with a mischievous smile. “I promise I won’t bite… unless, of course, you want me to.” His eyes twinkled at the joke, but a moment later, he laughed softly, shaking his head. “Forgive my crass sense of humor. I suppose the longer I spend in your company, the less formal I become.”
As he waited for her to sit beside him, Ayato gazed out over the moonlit water, the soft breeze ruffling his hair. “I think I’ve spent so much of my life adhering to formality, to duty, that I almost forgot what it’s like to simply enjoy a moment like this. And I have to say, I’m grateful for your company tonight, Shinobu.”
Tumblr media
His voice softened, the sincerity in his words clear. His gaze shifted back to her, and for a moment, the weight of the world seemed a little lighter. “You said this place brings you peace, and now, I think I can see why. It’s perfect.” He smiled, the moonlight catching his expression, warm and unguarded. “And so are you, in this moment.”

He'd still yet to drop the 'bro' word on Ayato during their chat. He always called the other that, or 'Ayato, bro!' but he'd refrained from doing so during their entire exchange thus far. Either it was out of sheer respect, or another reason which would remain to be seen at the moment. He'd listen as the other man spoke, letting out soft hums as he did so, mostly to show he was, in fact, listening to the other as he spoke.
"It ain't so much that I don't think anyone is lookin' for it, and more so, why would anyone look for it? There are far better prospects out there for everyone than some Oni orphan,"
Aside from himself, the Oni didn't have anything he could offer a prospective mate. Sure, he had Mora, and he was strong, capable of protecting himself and others, and he could cook. He was really good at cooking, as could be seen with the dishes that Ayato would know the Yokai had prepared without the aid of Thoma, as they had that 'wild' touch that only someone like the larger male could offer. Even though there was no soy sauce, tofu based anything, or beans in the dishes, everything was flavorful due to the herb and spice mixtures he made and supplied the Kamisato Estate, and his own places with.
Tumblr media
"Maybe one day I'll open it up but I'm afraid that if I try the person will leave."
He knew that wasn't always the case but the fear was very real. He would rather guard himself from that pain than admit to anything. Plus, he couldn't think of any reason why the person who he was being drawn to.. would reciprocate those feelings. Though, with how Ayato was talking to him, and touching him? He wondered if there was a chance there. Something... could potentially bloom between them but he was worried. Very much so, even.
"If anyone ever treated ya like a means to an end I might get genuinely mad at 'em. You're worth more than that, much, much more. Ya deserve real, genuine love, not someone who only wants ya for your status, power, and Mora."
He'd agreed with Ayato that the other man should be allowed to pick his partner. Be it man or woman, he didn't think it mattered. Of course, the elders would likely throw a fit should the other man choose another male to partner with, and eventually marry. He knew that gay couples were fairly common in Inazuma, but he was worried that his friend would be mistreated if he opted for another guy. If he was allowed to, he'd protect the other male, simply because he cared.
"I, do... wanna share it just a bit but I'm afraid to, Ayato. What if I confess to someone and they don't feel the same way? Or they just reject me outright? Fears like that are keepin' me from openin' up to the idea of lovin' someone. Because I don't want my heart to shatter into a million pieces. It wouldn't be right of someone to have to deal with that mess should it happen."
Not that he'd ever implicate someone into helping him heal. There was a lot more to his words than what was on the surface, and Ayato would catch those other meanings. The Oni had basically admitted to being in love with someone. Someone who was of a higher station in life than he was more than likely, though it wasn't as if he understood his own worth yet. He knew nothing of his family, or his true heritage. As Ayato pointed out that he had something on his face, he'd take a thumb and move to wipe it off.
"Here?"
If it was jam or jelly, he likely smeared it more than he cleaned it up, but he may grab a small napkin and dab at it afterward if that was the case. Or it was also possible that he simply smeared something on his face whilst trying to 'clean' up what may not actually be there at all.
"Mmm, maybe I would be surprised at who is lookin' but I also wouldn't know how to spot someone who was. I'd probably be more concerned that they were lookin' at someone like me rather than someone who it worthy of their love."
"You underestimate yourself, Itto. Your heart is as vast as the sea, and while you think no one is looking for it, those who are worth your time surely see it," Ayato said, a teasing glimmer in his eyes. "You may think that you’re just doing your duty, but it’s that very sense of duty mixed with your kindness that draws people to you. It's something many of us—myself included—admire."
He could sense the weight behind Itto’s words when he spoke of guarding his heart. Ayato understood the struggles that came with vulnerability, especially when expectations loomed overhead like a storm cloud. But Itto's tenacity, his willingness to help others, shone through. "You may be used to keeping your heart safe, but there’s strength in opening up, even a little,"
When Itto remarked on his lack of suitors, Ayato couldn’t help but chuckle softly. "You’re right; perhaps it's a good thing. I have little interest in those who would see me as a means to an end." His expression turned serious, the warmth in his gaze unwavering. "You deserve to choose love for yourself, just as I hope to. It’s not about politics or power; it’s about connection and mutual respect."
But it was Itto’s next words that caught Ayato off guard—the hint of a deeper sentiment nestled within the way he spoke about caring from a distance. The very notion made something flutter in Ayato's chest, a spark igniting as he considered the implications. "And perhaps," Ayato said, stepping a little closer, "you don’t have to keep it so safe. Maybe you could find a way to share it, even just a little."
Tumblr media
Before he realized it, he had reached up, cupping Itto's face gently with his hand, his thumb brushing against the Oni's cheek. Despite the height difference, the gesture felt natural, intimate even. He searched Itto’s eyes, wanting him to understand the weight of his words. "I wouldn’t count you out of the equation just yet, Itto. You have so much more to offer than you realize."
He let his thumb linger for a moment, relishing the warmth radiating from the Oni’s skin. Then, with a feigned nonchalance, he pulled back, a sly smile creeping onto his lips. "Ah, it looks like you had something on your face—just here." He gestured to the spot on his own cheek, mimicking the gesture as if to deflect the seriousness of the moment. Ayato’s laughter was light, but there was a glimmer in his eyes that suggested a deeper truth lay beneath the playful facade. "But really, don’t forget that you are worthy of love, too. You might be surprised at who’s looking." He stepped back, maintaining eye contact, letting the moment settle.

"Here's to hoping you're capable of seeing just what it is I see in the location then, huh?"
She wasn't often playful in her tone of voice, she often left that to Itto, truthfully, but Shinobu wasn't the Deputy of the Arataki Gang at this moment. She was just herself and in the company of Ayato, no less. She did a lot almost daily, and no amount of 'sit down and rest' from the Oni could get her to do so. It wasn't that Shinobu needed to do the things she did all the time, she was just so used to doing them that it was a habit. Perhaps a bad one at this point and yet not entirely. Maybe this moonlight excursion with Kamisato Ayato would make her realize that there was more to life than... work.
Even with all the freedom offered to her as a member of Itto's Gang, she found herself unable to sit idly. She was helping with lists for the boys to do, while the Boss himself was busy helping around Inazuma, or simply so they were out of her hair for a while. It was usually one or the other, really, the boys were great, they were... there were just times where they were a bit much was all. She loved them all like family, which was basically what the Gang was, as odd a thought as it was that's what the Arataki Gang was, essentially. Itto was the leader, she was the Deputy, and then the three boys were the members. There was no real hierarchy amongst the group though, they were all equal in one another's eyes, despite the fact that only two of the five had Visions.
Tumblr media
"I know that I'm deserving of breaks, but whenever I try I always find something to do. Or to busy myself, which well... lands me in some minor hot water with Itto."
Her laugh is genuine as she finishes speaking before shaking her head, because it was the truth. Itto really didn't really act how one would think a Gang Boss would act, but that was due to them not really being a Gang. Just a group of friends who happened to care about one another. Perhaps that was a good thing though and just from perusing older books in the city library she'd discovered that he wasn't the first Inazuman with a 'gang'. Neither were really gangs at all, just friends.
As they arrived she'd take a deep breath of the slightly cool, yet very fresh air in the location, a smile on her face beneath the mask all the while.
"This is, by far one of my absolute favorite places that Itto introduced me to. The atmosphere here is just so calm, there's a gentleness to it that you can't really find in many places around Inazuma right now."
She'd noticed him pick the flower earlier but hadn't thought anything of it at the time. After all, she had no reason to think anything of the action. Not when she lived with four men, three of who would pick up raw mint or sweet flowers and just eat them. She never questioned the boys though, they knew what they liked or could stomach after all.
Despite it being merely the two of them, she'd yet to remove her mask to even fully enjoy the cool night air. It wasn't that Ayato had never seen her face, he had on more than one occasion though, perhaps not since she joined the Arataki Gang. Even they had long since stopped asking her to take her mask off when it was just them. It was just another habit she'd formed to guard the four from her past finding her, or perhaps there was more to it than that. She'd long since taken to wearing the mask everywhere, even in other nations where people didn't know of her family name, or her past as the 'Shrine Maiden who Never Smiled'.
"Hm?"
Perhaps it was a good thing her mask was still upon her face, because the action of the flower being tucked into her hair above her ear, and Ayato's close proximity to her, made her face heat up.
"Thank you, Ayato."
She was learning that relaxing could be a good thing, even though it was the middle of the night. As her eyes took in the sight of him illuminated in the moonlight, the small silence settling between them refreshing rather than awkward. Maybe, just maybe, the Deputy would look back on this excursion with him with more fondness than she may realize at the moment.
And, perhaps it merely took another perspective for her to finally see what relaxation could really be.
Ayato listened intently as Shinobu spoke, noting the thoughtfulness behind her words. He could see the flicker of excitement in her eyes as she considered where to take him. It was refreshing to hear her express herself, revealing a side of her that was rarely uncovered amid her usual selflessness.
As she mentioned the places Itto had introduced her to, he felt a small smile creep across his lips. The image of the boisterous Oni leading her through various spots in Inazuma painted a vivid picture in his mind, one filled with laughter and light-heartedness. It made him appreciate Itto’s role in her life. “It sounds wonderful,” he replied, his tone earnest. “I’d love to see this place through your eyes."
As they walked, Ayato couldn't help but notice how the night air felt refreshing, clearing away the burdens that often weighed heavily on his shoulders. With each step, he felt a sense of ease settling over him. Picking up a delicate blue camellia that caught his eye, he twirled the stem between his fingers, contemplating her words. “You know,” he began, glancing sideways at her, “I have enough people doting over me day in and day out. What I truly cherish is when someone is just themselves. You don’t have to be the caretaker tonight. Be selfish with me, if only occasionally. You being yourself and wanting to do things you enjoy is more than enough of a break for me. It’s refreshing.”
He paused, letting the meaning of his words sink in. “You deserve a break too, Shinobu. We both do.” He felt a warmth in his chest at the thought of sharing this moment with her—an opportunity for her to relax and let go, if only for a little while.
As they approached the location Shinobu had in mind, he took in the beauty around him: the moonlight cascading over the gentle waves, reflecting on the water's surface, and illuminating the night sky. The stars twinkled like diamonds scattered across the canvas of darkness, unhindered by branches or foliage. It was indeed a stunning sight, and Ayato couldn’t help but admire how peaceful it felt here—especially with Shinobu by his side. “It's beautiful,” he remarked softly, his gaze sweeping over the serene landscape. “The unfiltered view of the water and the stars… it’s as if they’re inviting us to forget about everything else for a moment.”

There was a softness in his voice, uncharacteristic of the usually composed Yashiro Commissioner. The camellia had long represented his family and their values, but right now, it felt like a symbol of something more personal.
He glanced sideways at her, and seeing her happiness brought warmth to his chest. The way her eyes lit up reflected her connection to this place, and it struck him how rare it was to witness her like this. Before he could fully process his thoughts, an impulse tugged at him. He stepped closer to Shinobu, the blue camellia still in hand.
With a gentle motion, he leaned forward, tucking the camellia into her hair just above her ear. The delicate petals contrasted beautifully against her features, framing her face in a way that made her look even more radiant. “There,” he said, a hint of teasing in his voice, “the flower looks much better on you than on my fingers.”
There was a softness in his voice, uncharacteristic of the usually composed Yashiro Commissioner. The camellia had long represented his family and their values, but right now, it felt like a symbol of something more personal. Blue Camellia's were his own personal favorites which his why his Kamisato art, also reflected the blue Camellias.

He was good at masking things though Ayato was also very, very good at reading him, too. Unfair? Perhaps but the Oni didn't really seem to mind much. After all, the Kamisato Clan head was one of his closest friends. They'd known one another for years so Ayato being able to read him was fairly normal, all things considered. Or perhaps not so much normal as 'expected'.
"Ehh, not like anyone is gonna look for that kinda thing, Ayato. Why would anyone look for my heart even if it's on my sleeve?"
Tumblr media
While the other male didn't know the extent of the stuff the larger male faced on a nearly daily basis, or what he'd gone through since he was the size of a young human child, he knew some. He'd been in the city waiting for the Yokai so they could spend a little time together outside of the Estate. Sometimes it was at Komore Teahouse and other times it was just browsing the various shops. Whenever he showed up wheezing and with watery eyes, the Yashiro Commissioner was told that he'd had beans thrown at him that hit due to being stopped by someone.
"I prefer to be my true self. I don't have a need or a want for recognition since all I'm doin' is helpin' folks. There ain't anythin' I've done that's worthy of bein' recognized over,"
That's what he felt anyway, he was wrong, obviously, since people often thanked him in some way. Helping to rebuild Inazuma was something he just felt was his job. Perhaps it was something that the Crimson Oni did in the past and it was just part of his DNA or something. He wouldn't know since he had no memories of his clan OR his family. They were muddled, foggy, and confusing at best when he did recall even the smallest thing, it was usually forgotten just as quickly.
"I'm used to keepin' myself and my heart as safe as I can. Just about everythin' I'm goin' through makes me need to guard myself - my heart included."
He was much more REAL around Ayato than most others. Likely due to his not-so-hidden feelings. The other man knew him very well, too well, maybe, but the Oni didn't mind that much. He held the other in very, very high regard, not because he was the Yashiro Commissioner, and considered a noble in Inazuma, but because he was a very good person. Even when he was being playful the respect they had for one another was obvious to those around them.
"If that's what they're called then yeah. I ain't too familiar with the workings of the mortal rituals since I ain't one myself. I'm kinda surprised that ya don't have any suitors tryin' to get with ya though."
As Ayato resumed talking he'd figure out what the other meant by listening to his words. A snort would come from the larger male before he'd shake his head. Of course Ayato would meddle in those affairs to ensure they fell apart. He did deserve to pick who he loved though. That was something the taller of the two believed with his whole heart. Nobody should EVER be forced to marry someone for politics, power, or Mora. They should be allowed to do so for love.
"Maybe it's a good thing none of those have ever worked out. I've told ya before that I believe ya oughta be allowed to choose who ya wanna be with. Of course, ya told me about a year ago that ya just ain't really interested in that kinda thing, since ya were so busy."
He wasn't kept as busy now, since the nation was healing, and the Tri-Commission had started to back those helping out. Like the Yokai, and his Gang, which was now officially recognized as an organization. They got orders every now and then, from local farmers who needed irrigation ditches dug, or for their fields to be awoken again, the large Geo user was perfect for both things. He used the element he resonated with to soften the ground that had been marched on until it was almost rock hard so they could plant things again. He even helped them by spreading seeds and soil.
"Yeah, she does. She's been doin' a lot for Inazuma, even helpin' get seeds from other nations for the farmers who need 'em. She's a great person and I'm happy I can call her my friend."
He'd let out a hum as the other pointed out that his heart may not be as hard to capture, before chuckling and shaking his head. He didn't think his heart was easy to capture, but the Yokai could be wrong. After all, someone already HAD it - they just may not be aware of that. He was just trying to let the feelings die down so nothing awkward happened between them.
"Maybe you're right, but even if someone has my heart already... I'm gonna have to keep it safe since my chances with anyone are next to nil. I can care from a distance without makin' things weird."
The way he said the word care would allow Ayato to know that what the larger male felt was much deeper than that. And even if the shorter man was already aware of just who it was that may have captured the Yokai's heart, well, they'd both just have to see if anything could really happen there.
It was fascinating to Ayato how Itto’s external bravado masked such complex emotions. There was a certain warmth in knowing that Itto, despite his brawn and boldness, was still vulnerable, still cautious about matters of the heart. Ayato's hand lingered on Itto’s arm, a gesture that was almost too long to be considered casual but subtle enough not to raise immediate suspicion.
"You’re more than just an Oni, Itto. You’re someone who cares deeply, who wears his heart on his sleeve even when you think you’re hiding it," Ayato said, his voice smooth yet deliberate. He let his fingers lightly trace over Itto's arm as if grounding the moment in something tangible before withdrawing his hand with practiced ease. "As for recognition—well, helping people out of kindness rather than obligation is exactly what makes you... you."
He allowed the word to hang in the air between them, knowing well that Itto might not fully catch his drift, or if he did, he might brush it off. It was always like this—a dance. Ayato couldn’t be too forward; after all, the Oni still had to come to terms with what Ayato already had. But he could hint, suggest, and leave enough to be interpreted later. "As for your struggles," Ayato continued, shifting into a more serious tone, "I know you don’t like to talk about them, but… it’s okay to let people in, you know. Not everyone will hurt you. And you’re not alone in guarding your heart."
Ayato was more than aware of what Itto must’ve meant by mentioning the "courting" traditions. The Kamisato elders had been pushing for marriage, hinting at potential matches, and yet, none of it felt right to him. They saw it as a duty, but to Ayato, matters of the heart were far more personal. It wasn't about heirs or alliances—it was about connection. He'd sabotaged them all, without drawing suspicion to himself. He was skilled at that. "You mean Courting rituals? You make it sound so formal. It’s not as though I have suitors lining up at my door." He chuckled softly before adding, "And even if I were in the middle of such rituals, I assure you, I wouldn’t be interested in them. I prefer to make my own choices. And... they never work out. They always fall apart.. ehheheh~" There was a glint of mischief in his eyes, a subtle invitation for Itto to read between the lines, but he wouldn’t push further. Instead, he took a step back, giving Itto a little more space as if to break the tension without fully releasing it.
Tumblr media
"Shinobu does deserve this," Ayato agreed, seamlessly accepting Itto’s attempt to shift the conversation. "But don’t think you’re off the hook just yet, Itto. There’s more to you than you give yourself credit for, and I’m willing to bet others see it, too. Perhaps one day, you’ll realize that your heart isn’t so hard to capture after all. It just needs the right person." There was no need to rush this; after all, Ayato enjoyed the slow burn of moments like these—subtle, charged, and filled with unspoken possibilities.

"Where I would want to go, huh? Well, given the option is nice, there are many places I enjoy, but most of them I was introduced to by Itto,"
Her previous work as a Shrine Maiden left very little for adventures or excursions, really. She'd only gotten to know the place she knew now because of Itto. Of course, she worked around the city a LOT before meeting him and joining the Arataki Gang. So she'd have to think fairly hard while coming up with a place to go with Ayato.
Tumblr media
"I like the places he's taken the time to introduce me to, some are really nice, but after giving it some thought, I think I know the best place to show you."
With the moon high in the night sky, she knew of a place that wasn't too far away, and yet not overly close all the same, they could go to. It was nothing too fancy, let alone very hidden, but it was a nice place she did visit whenever she had the time to do so. Of course, most of that time was with the Gang, this would be different, because the company wasn't boisterous drunkard men, and an Oni who doesn't have enough leashes to keep them contained. That was part of the charm of the Arataki Gang though.
"It's fairly close, but far enough away that we won't get disturbed. I find myself visiting it every so often, but I do think you will enjoy it as much as I do."
The moon was clearly visible from there, no trees blocking the view of it, or the stars, for that matter. The gently rolling waves were more obvious as well. As the reflection of the moon could be seen upon the surface of the water below the small cliff. The area was completely safe, too. Beneath her mask she was smiling though the only obvious sign of that was her eyes shape. Her expression would eventually relax. She actually understood his want to see something she wanted to show him, rather than a place she thought he may like. Perhaps being such a good caretaker was so deeply enrooted within her that it was hard to let go of, but then again - it may be a good thing to let go of for now.
"It doesn't need to be all about me, I would like to offer you some solace as well, Ayato. Just a small break from the mundane and hard work we both put forth on the daily."
Ayato stopped in his tracks, catching Shinobu’s words as they trailed off into the quiet night. His expression softened as she once again thought of others—of Itto, of the gang, of him. She was always so focused on those around her, offering her support, sharing her strength, and rarely speaking of her own needs or desires.
He stepped in front of her, turning gracefully to face her under the violet-tinged sky. The faint glow from the stars above cast a soft light over them, and the subtle breeze carried the scent of her incense and the earthiness of the forest. His sharp eyes, usually filled with keen observation and strategy, now held a gentler, more genuine curiosity as he met her gaze directly.
“Shinobu,” Ayato began, his voice quiet but strong, “you’ve spent so much time thinking of others. Itto, the gang, even offering your help to me, as if your own needs can always wait.” His smile was warm, though there was a seriousness behind it now. “But tonight… I want to know something different.. I want to know where you would want to go?”
His eyes held hers, the question hanging in the cool night air. There was no teasing in his tone this time, no playful banter. Instead, there was genuine curiosity, a desire to know her beyond her roles and responsibilities. "Not where you think I might find peace or where Itto meditates," he continued, stepping closer, his presence grounding, "but where you would take me if it were just about what you want. I’d like to see the world through your eyes, if only for tonight."
He waited, letting the silence stretch between them, his gaze unwavering. The moment felt intimate in a way that was both unexpected and unspoken, like a shift had occurred in their dynamic, drawing them closer.
Tumblr media
The subtle rustling of leaves and the distant murmur of water framed the scene around them, but Ayato’s focus remained solely on Shinobu. He had always admired her strength, her capability—but this was different. He wanted to understand her, to see what brought her peace, joy, or even just a small moment of contentment in a life spent looking after others. “Where would you take me?” he asked again, a slight smile tugging at his lips. “Let tonight be about you.” His tone was gentle, inviting her to share a part of herself that perhaps she didn’t often reveal.
