Origins and how Kaworu and Shinji are connected to them.
Two section analysis, one for my research on the Lance of longinus, and one for the Spear of Cassius.Prompted by fanmail I received from @hannaorr Source links, explanations for convenience and cool gifs to ease this read are included!

The Lance of Longinus
The lance of Longinus was inspired from the Holy Lance aka Spear of Destiny that was used to impale Jesus when the Romans wished to confirm whether he was alive or not. What they found was that Jesus bled water and blood. The blood symbolizes his humanity and the water his divinity, it was an indicator of his death but also that "Jesus Christ was both true God and true man." as established by the council of Nicea.
In NGE the lance is a weaponized consciousness that followed it’s respective Seeds of Life to their designated final destinations.
“Every Seed of Life, including both Adam and Lilith, was sent with a counterpart Spear, meaning seven in all.”
In Kaworu’s / Adams case, his spear impaled him causing him to be immobilized alongside his creations, the angels.
Reason for such betrayal?
Lilith’s accidental landing on Adam’s designated planet and creating her own ecosystem.
When people joke that Kaworu died for your sins, they are absolutely right, Kaworu Nagisa in the NGE verse was a Messiah like figure.
Loved by few (in his case one person), wanted dead by many, misunderstood, unearthly, compassionate. He was a martyr who’s last farewell was used to ensure the salvation of humanity.
NGE distorted the meaning of the religious stories and items it drew inspiration from, but, when it comes to the case of the Longinus Spear, a lot of things still add up.
For one, they are both...Spears.The spears were all a part of a bigger design.
Kaworu was also both ‘true God and true man’. His soul was that of a God, and he was within a Lilim body.
And we know what happened to the body :
Both spears decided the destiny of their respective Messiah’s. One immobilized Adam for hundreds of years, rendering him unable to act. The other was used to confirmed the death of the son of God and spared him from crurifragium, breaking one’s legs to hasten the crucifixion.
Though there are reported to be 7 in NGE, (not counting how many are presented in ROE because their meaning might have been altered within the storyline of the ROE) we focus on the one that Paralyzed Kaworu.Which is why we as the viewer, are more likely to associate it with him as well.

Cassius Spear
Here’s some of the things we do know about this Spear:
In ROE You can (not) advance, Kaworu used the real Spear to stop "continuation of the Second Impact".We don’t know the latent effects of his action as things got changed/hidden in 3.0
It was also identified wrapped up on the moon next to Mark 06
It also appears in official Calendar art alongside Kaworu
According to Kaworu in ROE that when the spear of Cassius is used in conjunction to the Longinus they could Rebuild the World.
In ROE You can (not) Redo, Cassius the Spear is actually a Longinus Lance that deceives Kaworu and Shinji.
Side note, the two Longinus lances, as they turned out to be, indicated to Gendo that his plan worked likely because once removed from Lilith they allowed for the corpse to continue to decay and explode since it was no longer, immobilized, frozen in time, paralyzed.
We don’t know much else of the Spear of Cassius just yet but we can connect it to Shinji because of the aforementioned and the fact that it was Shinji who advanced ahead of Kaworu and pulled the false Spear.
Kaworu had it in his person at some point, but it was Shinji who ends up with it.
Below is an example of the Spears and the two boys:
Official art of Kaworu and Shinji, Shinji is seen holding the Spear (In the form of an instrument)
And here comes the analysis part.
The spear name is connected to the Longinus case.
The words Cassius Longinus are actually a GrecoRoman name many people had according to wikipedia. And within the wiki page of the Holy Lance, we also see that a man named Cassiodorus is mentioned. He is relevant as his name directly connects us to the tale that inspired the Lance of Longinus!
“A mention of the lance (of Longinus) occurs in the so-called Breviarius at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The presence in Jerusalem of the relic is attested by Cassiodorus (c. 485–585)”
At first glance Cassiodorus is too different a name to be related to the Cassius spear.
But this Roman senator’s name has Greek roots and as with a lot of Greek words, can be broken down to smaller words.
His name in Greek is ‘Κασσιόδωρος’ The -δωρος element of the name is derived from the Greek word ‘δωρον’ which means present /gift.
My mother language happens to be Greek so I can confirm this. But for the sake of sourcing, here is the meaning confirmed.
As for the important first part, there are a few interpretations. ‘κάσις’ could mean brother.
Oooor, it could be derived from ‘Kasios’ which is an epithet of the Ancient Greek God Δίας aka Zeus!
There is one more possible meaning but it’s irrelevant unless someone can come up with a connection that has to do with a mountain.
In any case, the name Cassiodorus, this man who mentioned the Longinus relic. is theophoric and could mean God’s gift.
Whoever came up with the name Cassius for the spear in Roe, likely looked up the lance of longinus, saw the name Cassius being mentioned and a quick google search lead them to this historical figure and his name translation.
What does this mean for The Casius Spear? That the word Cassius is named either after Zeus or the word brother.
And they both work within the context the spear is given in ROE.
If we take the meaning of the word based of off the word ‘κάσις’ as in brother :
It works because it is a spear much like the Longinus ones we know of, it’s seen near a Longinus spear, being used for what looks like the same function, immobilizing a God, (even though we know that is not what that spear in particular really is meant for or can do) and it is also, imitating a Longinus spear.
If we take the meaning of the word Casius to be derived from ‘Kasios’ as in Zeus :
It works because in the known NGE verse, spears come from the F.A.R and accompany the Seeds of Life, who are, Gods to the Lilims / humans + other organisms on earth.
Their true purpose and reuse of Cassius remains to be seen in 3.0 + 1.0
Still from ‘Until you come to me’
Hopefully 3.0+1.0 will be a time were Shinji can travel to a time were Kaworu was alive with the aid of Ayanami Rei and claim the real Cassius in order 'Rebuild the World’ as Kawou hoped. (I will eventually make a post about why that’s a possibility another time)
