Take part in the Queer Design Count

Diversity and inclusion is one of the most important topics in design and tech right now, and we want to make sure queer voices are a part of that conversation. 

According to the most recent AIGA Design Census, 15% of people in design identify. That's more than three times the most recent estimate of LGBTQ+ people in the general population. Despite our outsized representation, responses suggest LGBTQ+ designers are more likely than their cisgender and heterosexual peers to earn less and stay in the industry for shorter periods of time. But we don’t know why. 

The Queer Design Count is a field-wide survey of LGBTQ+ people in design to learn more about their experiences in the field. The results will provide concrete insights we can use to build a more inclusive design field for everyone. If you're a queer person involved in design—in any capacity or discipline—share your experiences at queerdesign.club/count by November 30, 2019.

This shirt is from the OUT collection I did for my clothing brand Quiet Deviants. I hand-bleached purple long sleeve shirts to get the pink color. It was a way for me to visually tell the story of coming out: the initiation of a journey from dark to light, and the inevitable lack of control that comes with it that I demonstrated through the undefined lines of the bleach effect. The shoes are from a limited-run collection that was designed by Sheila Rashid, who is one of my favorite queer designers. Wearing these shoes makes me feel closer to the aesthetic that I am aiming for, one that is a more masculine street style.

The reflective inclusions have a bright metallic luster, and their glittering appearance immediately attracts attention. This exciting appearance has made goldstone a popular man-made gem and sculptural material. Reddish brown goldstone is made by heating molten glass to a temperature that is hot enough to dissolve granules of copper oxide that are added to the melt. After the copper oxide is completely dissolved, the melt is allowed to cool very slowly. This slow cooling gives copper ions in the melt adequate time find one another and grow into octahedral-shaped copper crystals. The slower the cooling, the larger the copper crystals. The bright metallic luster of these copper crystals is what produces the sparkling appearance of goldstone. An octahedral crystal has eight triangular faces. If you look at goldstone with a microscope under reflected light, you will see triangular faces of the copper crystals reflecting the light back at you from various depths below the surface of the glass. The glass of reddish brown goldstone is colorless.
